  1. Hey folks We are currently working on Niche 1 day per week with 4 people. The game is currently profitable for us, even though it's not making a ton of money. I think money-wise this will stay about the same this and maybe even next year. As mentioned, we will do one more big update this year. I don't know about next year yet. It very much depends on how things go for us as a company. We'll keep you up to date!

  2. Alright, so here is my headcanon for what exactly the player is in the world of Niche. A research drone sent by future humans to study life on an exoplanet. This is the reason why the Niche animals have portmanteaus of Earth animal names as names - those are what the human astrobiologists were reminded of. The genetics of the animals are close, but not quite, like that on Earth - for example, phenotypical changes are in at least one species much faster and more drastic than in any multicellular lifeform here. Those peculiar genetics are the point of the research this probe is conducting. The hexfield landscape is how the drone's systems maps the area. When you "control" the nichelings, you are actually just recording and logging their activities - the drone is able to interface with the nicheling's brains, which comes with the downside of only sensing what they sense as well as an aerial view from a satellite or atmospheric vehicle. It also means that you can't actually see the difference between "what they do" and "what I do". So, what do you think? Plausible?

  3. It always looks so strange when the babies come out with the horns, so I thought it would be idea if the horns would grow as they age. Newborns would have no horns, babies with 1 gem would have little stubs. Ones with 2 gems would just have a smaller version of the horns than the adults? Once they become adults their horns would be fully grown.

  4. So, I just randomly had an idea for a new gene. It would maybe look kind of like a snake head, with frills on the sides. If a creature comes within a certain range (maybe three or four spaces?) the nicheling with the gene has an option to spit at it. The creature would be poisoned, and wouldn't take damage right away. Perhaps you could make puddles on certain spots, and creatures who step in them (including nichelings) would be poisoned. Edit: Based on people's suggestions, I think that I should change it to instead paralyze the target for a day or two, although only a few turns for larger creatures. However, there is also a very small chance to poison the target. Edit 2: Should probably add some possible unlock conditions. I think that it would be unlocked after eating a certain number of toxic berries and licking a certain number of times. Another option could involve picking from the carnivorous plant.

  5. Maybe add a tutorial that step by step teaches you how to build and use a robot. P.s. Add more movement types.

  6. wheels that you can change the size of. Then we could make little deployable rover or turrets

  7. Spitting is something I wanted to add since FOREVER. Some of you might still remember that the Derp Snout used to be called Spit Snout, the reason being that we wanted to give it spitting ability It would be able to spit at Rabills and other small prey, which would glue them to the ground for a day. Take my upvote!

  10. This sounds like a great idea!

  11. Maybe it could be a Llama head that you can use to spit at creatures with. Just imagine having a whole tribe of llamas, with everyone spitting at rabbils and crabbits and every other living thing they can find Would probably only have +1 attack.

  14. Hello, I'm Saphire. I'm a student for Oslo, Norway, and I'm just a few months away from completing my master thesis in modern Middle Estern history. I've played Niche since its release on Steam, but only recently joined the community. I also enjoy playing cattail, stardew vallet and skyrim:)

  15. I agree that these genes could be improved. I think +2 smelling to gills and +1 smelling to platypus beak would be reasonable, including +1 feeding from the bottom for every webbed paw.
    2 points
  16. webbed paw could do with some collecting or fishing ability somehow, as right now having a double-webbed paw nicheling is kind of worthless, you can swim really fast, but you sure can't do anything with it. i could see webbed paw with either fishing 1, and / or feeding from the bottom ability like Platypus beak, it could be liked the underwater version of digger's paw.

  17. There is currently no model for the female peacock tail because it doesn't do anything. The devs plan on adding a smaller peacock tail to the females in the future though

  19. I think they'll continue making new updates as long as Niche remains profitable. They've done three giveaways in succession, so I imagine the game isn't doing too badly in the money department. I even doubt this is the last huge update as we have staff coming by pretty frequently to support our suggestions or tell them why they can't be implemented. Now for the dreaded acronym: DLC. I absolutely hate it. The Niche devs haven't fallen into the trap of leaving out content that should've been in the game to begin with, but I worry suggesting it may go down that road. It's - unfortunately - a smart business decision, and younger gamers don't know the difference compared to now and how things were before, (meaning they'll buy DLC content regardless) but it's a slippery slope that makes me nervous. I feel like raising the price of the game for future buyers is more fair, but I know money talks louder than anything, so I suppose we'll just have to wait and see.

  22. Hi, I what to make a suggestion, Lately I've been playing and one of the problems sometime I have is the "Unlock gene notification", is hard to track which gene you unlock in the menu, so maybe add like a glow feature of something in the gene menu that can show you which gene you unlock. I add an example n,n/ Thanks!

  23. Hi everybody. As I was watching Lathlands latest youtube video of nimbatus, I got a bit annoyed of how overpowered the shields are. You can put them on your drone and let them always be active, which makes the missions too easy and monotonous. I thought of two different ways to improve it's behaviour: 1. The shields drain more energy over time. 2. Shields have a limited active time and need to cool down. (Active time could be improved with upgrades in the future) What do you think? Any other suggestions? What would you prefer?

  27. I'm not technically a new member, but since everyone seems to be introducing themselves, I might as well follow suit. My name's Draconiya, but you can call me Draco or Drac, whichever you prefer. I'm a female in my late teens from Germany, and my interests include art, storytelling, writing and roleplaying, as well as animals, nature, languages, acting and genetics. I've wanted to either become an actor or an author since I was little, and through some miracle of optimism and recalibration of goals those professions are what I still aim for today. I own a very fluffy adorable longhair half-persian kitty whose name is actually Nova, but we always call her by a plethora of nicknames she seems to recognize and respond to with her squeaky meowing. Seriously, she sounds like a door whose hinges need oiling, but it's adorable. She's a Longhair Tortoiseshell Silver Classic Tabby and White with hazel eyes, and the cutest being I've seen on this planet. Weird to think she'll still only be three years old this month, it feels like she's been with me forever. I also used to have a dwarf rabbit named Felix with beady red eyes and a Siamese Point-like pattern, though he sadly passed away a couple years ago. I'm quite fascinated with the intricate art of creating and analyzing characters, and am always looking for ways to improve my own, though I don't really see the sense in sharing your brainchildren with complete strangers on the internet, so you probably won't even notice this. I stumbled upon Niche when it was in it's veeeeeeery early stages, with the wooden graphics and four genes in total, and forgot about it for a while after playing even though I really liked the concept, until I found it again through either JessiMew or Seri!Pixel!Biologist!, can't remember which. From that point on, I watched many of their Niche series, until I decided getting the game was worth it, and I've been playing ever since. I used to play MMOs, but have taken a liking to isometric RPGs in the last year or so. Once my new computer arrives, I'll hopefully be able to play them again without crashing every time D: Even Niche is getting stuttery, hopefully my tribe will be full bird-mode before it starts crashing as well. Unlike seemingly everyone in this thread (lol), I have never watched an anime or read a manga, though I find the art style quite beautiful. I love drawing and sketching in general, especially dragons or Nichelings, though dragon-like beings are definitely my speciality. Humans are freaking difficult though, the best I've managed so far is a half-decent satyr with a misleading facial expression. Digital art is somewhat of a mystery to me, too, I prefer the good ol' pencil-and-paper approach. I'm somewhat awkward when interacting with others, so if my writing sounds stilted or something that's probably because I read over everything several times before posting, in part because I'm not a native speaker and still not fully accustomed to writing entirely in a foreign language, but I also hate making stupid sloppy spelling or grammar mistakes that could've been easily averted. I'm also rather honest and blunt by nature, so if something I say upsets you, please take it with a grain of salt, I most likely didn't mean it like it seems I did. That's about it. Nice to see so many people here, though, the last time I checked, this thread was completely empty

  28. Oh, I love this idea! To keep with the mixed earth animal theme, may I suggest naming them Snorms? Part snake, part worm?
    1 point
  29. They are so cute! and an abushing enemy is actually a good idea, I like it. But would it make sense for some little snakes to attack prey as big as a nicheling? or am I imagening them too small because of how cute they look xD?

  30. I fully agree! Once I posted something and moved on, and later I was lie; "Wait a minute, I spelled that word wrong! Oh well.. its been to long.. guess I have to deal with it."

  32. Hmmm.. what if with the strange colors on bird nichelings it could help with calling out for a mate? since most male birds have more attractive colors anyway to attract females

  33. Yes exactly! +2 Smelling seems like a perfectly reasonable amount of smelling ability and is a good standard!

  34. I kind of like the idea of it being 1 strength and 2 fishing. That lines it up with the 3 stats on all the other legs, and you can get more strength from horns and body type, but without the forelegs if you're going with winged creatures, you're limited to 2 fishing from the fishing tail. And having no speed wouldn't bother the double winged creatures since they fly everywhere anyway.

  35. Pt 2: Gems Lol I'm back. I made a new lil' system to go with my tribe thing, as I accidentally kept breeding the WRONG creatures without looking, which luckily didn't result in any sick nichelings, but was annoying me bc it wasn't to plan. This is how I now organise my creatures: Green: Unchosen breeding groups, no pathway yet (generally teens + kids) Orange: Not a breeder, either hunter or collector Blue: Alpha/leader of a breeding group Pink: Breeder Yellow: Elder (all ranks except orange become this when finished breeding plan) This system isn't very complex, but it works for me, as my tribe currently has 57 members (yikes) and I don't have much time to change gems for everyone, all the time. Anyway, thanks for reading.

  36. Hullo! My username is Gamma Warrior and I have been playing Nimbatus for a while, but I just bothered to join the forums. Before anybody asks, my favorite anime is named Hikaru No Go (Which is also a manga). It is more like a TV series, but in anime form. You can see if you look in my Automatic Drones post that Nimbatus' logic gates and sensors are my favourite things to play around with.

  38. I just jump into action without really thinking. I can't really manage things. Whenever some of the breeding creatures die I just choose new ones that populate the entire area while the other ones go out for food. I often realize that I need to choose new breeding pairs too late so it's quite challenging for me to keep everyone alive. I also rarelly bring in wanderers because they often cary a lot of genes that are not that good and I'm too lazy to breed them out. Only exception is when I really need more imunity genes and I find a wanderer that's decent, but I just often get my new imunity genes from creatures traped in ice.

  40. After playing for a bit more, I found that all nichelings are floating when perched on the birch trees, but on regular nut trees they look normal. The leaves still disappear though, although I'm wondering if that might be intentional to make them easier to click on.

  43. I think I found a bug. When I send my nichelings up into a tree, the leaves disappear. They reappear when I move them off the tree. Also, when I do perch the nichelings on the trees, they are floating up above the tree. Admittedly, I have only done this with babies and juveniles, as I currently have no adults that can fly.

  45. Wow so many people from so many diferent places, that's impresive! I might introduce myself since I finally decided to make an acount on the forums. Hey, I'm I'm Bout de Carton (It's french for Piece of Cardboard) and I live in Canada. I like to draw and animate, I dream to become a professional animator someday. I like nature, anything that is related to drawing, listening to music (especially rock), cartoons and making up silly stories I sometimes write down. I loved niche since the start of the kickstarter but I only got my hands on the game in spring of last year. Niche made me discover a lot of wonderfull people and I'm very thankfull for that! Other games I like are WakfuMMO (I've played it for almost 2600 hours and I don't know how to feel about it), Meadow, Stardew Valley and Cattails! I don't know english that well since I live in the french part of Canada but I try my best to improve it! That's about all!

  47. You need to select 3 different drones to start the sumo tournament. Before each match you see the opponent drone and now you have to choose with which drone you want to fight it. The goal is to survive as long as possible with your "deck" of drones.

  48. I've nearly got full laser powers researched, and eventually I'll have the whole tech tree explored. What if there were some way to advance your entire tech level slowly but nearly indefinitely. For example, spend x-thousand resources to reduce power consumption of all pieces by 1%, or damage output, or thrust, etc. Then a player could have a progression that would eventually allow them to create fundamentally different ships. Someone who focused entirely on one or another of these trees would have something unique to show off.
