  1. It always looks so strange when the babies come out with the horns, so I thought it would be idea if the horns would grow as they age. Newborns would have no horns, babies with 1 gem would have little stubs. Ones with 2 gems would just have a smaller version of the horns than the adults? Once they become adults their horns would be fully grown.

  2. Hi folks Friends of us just launched their board game on Kickstarter. Would be aweome if you support them! I chose the "Origin of Species" reward and will design a Nicheling head as my special reward Our team tested it and had a great time some weeks ago

  3. I dont have any pictures but I have two dogs, Nugget and Helgi. Nugget is a golden retriever (english and american mix) that was born with a stomache disease, his brother, Bruno, had that too, which he died as a puppy from.. ;-; Thankfully we saved Nugget and got him all better! Sadly he has a forever weak stomach and cant drink too much water and can only have vegetables and his dog food. Helgi is a mutt that we rescued from the streets in my old neighborhood. She was stray for three months and we found her at three months, we took her to the vet and fixed her up, we fed her and cared for her and now she is a fat lil (actually she is a medium sized dog so yea) sausage Also she is terrified of people wearing hats, we have no clue why. I also have three cats! Cricket, comet, and rat. Rat is a flametip siamese who lives outside of our home. (he pees on our clothes if he is inside) He is 16 years old and loves people! My mother used to work at petsmart or petco and they had a little abandoned kitten, no one wanted him so she took him in! Comet is a fat fluffy ginger manx of the age 12. he hates being pet on the sides or belly, if you dare do so he will scratch/bite you. He loves to be cradled and pet roughly on the chest. Oh, and he also wears a bow-tie. I dont really know his story but he did have a sister who was all black with yellow eyes. And that leads me to Cricket! She was born at our house by Comets sister. She had two other siblings, Emily and Goat, (Goat died later, and so did crickets mother) Emily is still alive but she was rehomed. Cricket is a tabby ragdoll with a brown coat and black stripes. Green eyes. (Comet cleans her alot and she does not like it very much :>) And yeah.. Those are my current pets! I used to have two hamsters but they died off sadly. Their names were Buttercup and Marshmello and I gave them the best lives I could possibly offer up. If you read through this all, then thank you! I had alot to say about my pets Also, not to mention I am hopefully going to get guinea pigs.. The rescues are just taking their sweet time to not end up with two little baby guinea pigs

  4. Hey folks We are currently working on Niche 1 day per week with 4 people. The game is currently profitable for us, even though it's not making a ton of money. I think money-wise this will stay about the same this and maybe even next year. As mentioned, we will do one more big update this year. I don't know about next year yet. It very much depends on how things go for us as a company. We'll keep you up to date!

  5. Currently we can only attack wanderers but I would like the option to be able to attack your own tribemates as well. (I want it mainly for role playing reasons). We would probably have to have a similar locking system to it like with the alpha, beta and omega ranks so that you don't accidentally attack your creatures by misclicking What do you guys think?

  7. Hey folks We put together a road map that shows all the things we want to add to the game during the Closed Alpha. There will be a total of 4 updates. Update 1-3 will add new features and update 4 will mostly improve and polish things up. There will be plently of smalles updates/patches inbetween with bug fixes, improvements and new drone parts. To all Closed Alpha Testers: Please give us lots and lots of feedback so the game will be in great shape for Steam Early Access

  11. This is Issi, a wanderer I found. Her gray fur mixed in with her blind eyes makes her one of my favorite creatures. Plus, poison fangs and big body are two of my favorite genes! This is Kois, another wanderer. I found her on a killer island and she was my first J immunity creature. Kois is now the goddess of growth and fertility within my tribe. This is Mero. I really love his pattern! This is Smoke, also known as "The Shadow Child".

  12. Yes the idea is that each dronepart and enemy has a temperature. If it rises too high, it will start to burn. Burning objects will rise the temperature of adjacient objects and objects have different heat resistance depending on the material. The idea behind is that you need to actively cool down or shield your droneparts if you get closer to the molten core of a lava planet. But we'll implement it in a way that the mechanic works for all other objects For example you should be able to set fire to enemies, they panic and set others on fire

  15. Hey Guys! This is a follow up to my previous post(The one with all of the Space-Worms). I dedicated a good few hours and a whole lot of hard work to make an over 620 part monstrosity. I call it the Shark Tooth Worm, a worm that literally devours planets. (Trust me, planet Rytalae has been completely destroyed.) Here are a few GIFs: There you go! I hope I stand a chance at winning this because this is an amazing game! I will be willing to make any big drones, just PM me with suggestions. Happy Space Flying!

  16. Spitting is something I wanted to add since FOREVER. Some of you might still remember that the Derp Snout used to be called Spit Snout, the reason being that we wanted to give it spitting ability It would be able to spit at Rabills and other small prey, which would glue them to the ground for a day. Take my upvote!

Outfitted with the most powerful computer system ever deployed by the USF, coupled with a massive high energy EM panel array that allows for the most complex communication system ever developed. Unfortunately enemy hostiles keep making it cry...

  19. I'm not technically a new member, but since everyone seems to be introducing themselves, I might as well follow suit. My name's Draconiya, but you can call me Draco or Drac, whichever you prefer. I'm a female in my late teens from Germany, and my interests include art, storytelling, writing and roleplaying, as well as animals, nature, languages, acting and genetics. I've wanted to either become an actor or an author since I was little, and through some miracle of optimism and recalibration of goals those professions are what I still aim for today. I own a very fluffy adorable longhair half-persian kitty whose name is actually Nova, but we always call her by a plethora of nicknames she seems to recognize and respond to with her squeaky meowing. Seriously, she sounds like a door whose hinges need oiling, but it's adorable. She's a Longhair Tortoiseshell Silver Classic Tabby and White with hazel eyes, and the cutest being I've seen on this planet. Weird to think she'll still only be three years old this month, it feels like she's been with me forever. I also used to have a dwarf rabbit named Felix with beady red eyes and a Siamese Point-like pattern, though he sadly passed away a couple years ago. I'm quite fascinated with the intricate art of creating and analyzing characters, and am always looking for ways to improve my own, though I don't really see the sense in sharing your brainchildren with complete strangers on the internet, so you probably won't even notice this. I stumbled upon Niche when it was in it's veeeeeeery early stages, with the wooden graphics and four genes in total, and forgot about it for a while after playing even though I really liked the concept, until I found it again through either JessiMew or Seri!Pixel!Biologist!, can't remember which. From that point on, I watched many of their Niche series, until I decided getting the game was worth it, and I've been playing ever since. I used to play MMOs, but have taken a liking to isometric RPGs in the last year or so. Once my new computer arrives, I'll hopefully be able to play them again without crashing every time D: Even Niche is getting stuttery, hopefully my tribe will be full bird-mode before it starts crashing as well. Unlike seemingly everyone in this thread (lol), I have never watched an anime or read a manga, though I find the art style quite beautiful. I love drawing and sketching in general, especially dragons or Nichelings, though dragon-like beings are definitely my speciality. Humans are freaking difficult though, the best I've managed so far is a half-decent satyr with a misleading facial expression. Digital art is somewhat of a mystery to me, too, I prefer the good ol' pencil-and-paper approach. I'm somewhat awkward when interacting with others, so if my writing sounds stilted or something that's probably because I read over everything several times before posting, in part because I'm not a native speaker and still not fully accustomed to writing entirely in a foreign language, but I also hate making stupid sloppy spelling or grammar mistakes that could've been easily averted. I'm also rather honest and blunt by nature, so if something I say upsets you, please take it with a grain of salt, I most likely didn't mean it like it seems I did. That's about it. Nice to see so many people here, though, the last time I checked, this thread was completely empty

  20. Alright, so here is my headcanon for what exactly the player is in the world of Niche. A research drone sent by future humans to study life on an exoplanet. This is the reason why the Niche animals have portmanteaus of Earth animal names as names - those are what the human astrobiologists were reminded of. The genetics of the animals are close, but not quite, like that on Earth - for example, phenotypical changes are in at least one species much faster and more drastic than in any multicellular lifeform here. Those peculiar genetics are the point of the research this probe is conducting. The hexfield landscape is how the drone's systems maps the area. When you "control" the nichelings, you are actually just recording and logging their activities - the drone is able to interface with the nicheling's brains, which comes with the downside of only sensing what they sense as well as an aerial view from a satellite or atmospheric vehicle. It also means that you can't actually see the difference between "what they do" and "what I do". So, what do you think? Plausible?

  21. Hey, so I was thinking about how it would look so cool to have blue horns on my nichelings and I came up with this idea. I really would like if a few rarer cosmetic genes could be unlocked in more unusual ways and so, what if the blue ramhorns could be unlocked by killing a rare blue crabit. A bit like those rare blue lobsters that you can sometimes find in the ocean. Like in this image: It would only spawn on certain islands that are more focused on water and would have quite a large lifespawn. Maybe it could be something like a achievement to kill it? Also for the horn's blue hue there's a few that I would like. Nothing too saturated but not too grayish etheir. Like those: I got a bit caried away and even drew a nicheling ahah So yup that's my sugestion! Thanks for reading!

  23. We will use this thread to post fresh screenshots, videos and gifs of the new features and things we are currently working on. Here a sneak peak of the new call I'm working on. It can be used while you are on top of a treestump and it has a chance to attract wild animals! The lower your population, the higher the chance

  24. I think that like cats and dogs in real life, Nichelings should be able to hold their kits in their mouths. The baby could be carried as soon as it is born, and can be carried up until two gems. Maybe also big bodied or large bodied creatures could carry lean bodied creatures like how in the wild sometimes animals will carry the weaker members of their packs or family. It would really help out when you have this one baby that runs out of energy before making it to the port, and you can just pick them up and leave the island. It would also make it easier so that the blue birds couldn't reach the baby. - Niches can only carry their babies till 2 gems! - Babies that are carried up until two gems will not grow, and the child may take slight damage due to not being able to grow. They will be dropped onto available tiles next to the mother, if none than baby will stop growing until put down. - You CANNOT do anything besides walking when holding a kit in its mouth. - Rare chance that a bluebird may still attack a scruff carried nicheling, however parent can fight back.

  25. So, I just randomly had an idea for a new gene. It would maybe look kind of like a snake head, with frills on the sides. If a creature comes within a certain range (maybe three or four spaces?) the nicheling with the gene has an option to spit at it. The creature would be poisoned, and wouldn't take damage right away. Perhaps you could make puddles on certain spots, and creatures who step in them (including nichelings) would be poisoned. Edit: Based on people's suggestions, I think that I should change it to instead paralyze the target for a day or two, although only a few turns for larger creatures. However, there is also a very small chance to poison the target. Edit 2: Should probably add some possible unlock conditions. I think that it would be unlocked after eating a certain number of toxic berries and licking a certain number of times. Another option could involve picking from the carnivorous plant.

  26. Since there's currently only 3 types of hind legs, I thought one that matches up with winged nichlings would work. The gene would give them 4+ attack since a predatory bird's talons are pretty powerful. I might put up a drawing on what it might look like later.

  27. Not sure if this has been suggested already, sorry if it has. It's a dark idea, but I've had this issue for quite a while. It's my fault for not scanning the entire map after every move, but often times one (or a few) of my female nichelings will get impregnated by a rogue male (One time I looked the same turn and couldn't even find him? What's up with that?), then I have to move them all the way to a nest and wait for the ugly derp snout babies to grow up before I can kick them out of the tribe. But then they continue to wander the island and eat up all the berries until you kill them, which wastes precious turns, or they die from one reason or the other. It happens in real life, and it would be useful here. Not only for unwanted derpy offspring, but babies that are born sick and could potentially infect the rest of your tribe if you don't always keep them separated from everyone else, not to mention that kicking sick nichelings from your tribe just enables them to run loose and wander into your tribe, infecting more since you can no longer control where they go.

  28. I think it would be great to have more settings for the sandbox mode. For example toggle buttons for all predator types (want to remove rogue males? Just switch them off). Maybe we could also define stuff like "Maximal tribe size" to add some extra challenge or "Maxium age of animals" so our critters can live longer. Or maybe even some special rules like "Only one male allowed in the pack" or "Tribe can only eat meat".

  30. (With my apologies for putting five ideas in one request, but they all interact, so separating them makes them all more confusing) I realize that Nimbatus is a drone-building game, and the focus is on the drone mechanics, but I think there are a few opportunities to improve the exploration aspects of the game, without detracting significantly from the construction. Travel between planets could take actual wall-clock time, presented as a countdown before the "Launch" button will function, but still allowing drone construction. For short trips, this could be on the order of seconds, so the player won't even notice in the time it takes to select a drone. For cross-galaxy trips, expect a good several minutes of waiting... perhaps a good time to build a new drone or upgrade your tech tree. Trips crossing the galactic core or between arms could require spending resources, with longer trips requiring more resources. That would keep resources useful once the tech tree is fully purchased. Destroying a transmitter would occasionally result in a transmission being intercepted from a random planet, making it immediately available for travel. Different regions of the galaxy would have different characteristics. While one area might be high in a particular resource, another would be scarce. This wouldn't necessarily affect any individual planet, but a large area. From the galaxy view, map overlays could show where different resources are most prevalent. These features would also encourage tech upgrades for the Nimbatus mothership itself, rather than just the drone tech. Propulsion improvements could reduce travel time. Cargo improvements could unlock drone collections. Sensor upgrades would show more of the planet (essentially zooming out the view) or enable minimap features,. Manufacturing upgrades would unlock new types of parts that wouldn't be strictly necessary for missions, but would support new drone designs. Unless I'm mistaken (and please comment if I am), the overall effects on gameplay would be: More technology options for longer gameplay An incentive to travel longer distances (better chances for resources) An incentive to not travel long distances (avoiding the time delay) An opportunity to explore new areas faster (intercepted transmissions) A reason to replay previously-explored planets (new drone parts allowing new designs) An incentive to find and destroy transmitters when that isn't the planet's mission Changing game tactics toward the later game (as more of the planet can be seen, more mission precision is possible) Whole classes of drone designs become in-game upgrades, so full-featured drones can't be built from the first mission.

  31. I think a few extra pieces of armour should be available such as a “Heavy Armour Block” which has extra health but each piece has to be bought using a small amount of resources; also with the new Freeze/Burn update in the works maybe implement armour resistant armours with a tint to show they’re for each effect or perhaps if colouring is implemented add a coloured shiny effect ontop of the base colour. Also different shaped armour would be good such as curved corner pieces, Semi Circular pieces and eqalateral triangles for new unique designs.

  32. Good ideas. Quick note on buying stuff: The problem with buying for tools/parts which might get destroyed in a mission and you have to re-buy them is, that if you're a bad player, your might get stuck in a loop in which you are too bad to finish the mission, might spend all your resources on new parts and lose them as well and then are too bad to get new resources or it's too much of a grind to get enough resources to get enough good parts and so on. The mechanic of buying parts which you can loose has the potential of bringing not so good players in a situation which is frustrating and not fun - we think. We therefore decided that whatever you unlocked with resources, you will keep it forever, so that your work/grind is not in vain. Other games have other solutions but for Nimbatus we deemed this the best one. More and different shield parts are definitely coming sometime in the future

  36. Interesting, hmm. I think you have to program it yourself probably. From the top of my head I would probably implement something like for each satellite, you would have an AND gate with the e.g. WASD controls and an additional key like 1,2,3 or 4 and if you control the 1st drone, then if "1" is active you can use WASD. If "2" is active and you use WASD, you only control the 2nd drone. I think something like this would be needed. Maybe we need to add some logic parts to streamline this process. Good thinking!

  47. About the lag for longer games, someone suggested that they'd be stored in boxes instead of scrolling so a box for generation 1 and or 2 and then another box for generation 3. That way only one or two boxed will be open (or scroll through) and the other ones wouldn't be loaded. In addition to that we could have the option to export the file to see it whole?

  48. 1st picture: This is Iskoko, my Goddess of the Grasses. In all of my tribes she is responsible for the grass that gives them all coverage. When she was young a bearyena killed some of her family, and she escaped because she fled into the tall grass to hide herself. She has been thankful for the grass ever since.(She is also the drawing on my profile Picture) 2nd picture: Kirroku, My god of Hope. When his faction (So i have one big tribe, but then i split that tribe into factions, He was of the Savannah faction, Hence the yellow gems) was still small they took in a wandering female, that female was his mother, and when he was born, his Faction was given the Hope that they will survive. 3rd picture: Rela, My Goddess of Balance. She was the last child born to her parents (Can't remember their names, Sorry) She is the Goddess of balance because since her parents just died, they had no Alpha. And when she gained her second gem, she approched her faction with a firm voice to tell them to stop fighting amongst themselves, or else their beloved faction would cease to exist. She restored balance to her faction and was elected as Alpha in her parents place.
