  1. I posted this on the steam community but now's my chance to speed the word. I got this idea from birds, cats, dogs, wolves and many more animals.

  2. Pygmy nichelings are like wandering nichelings with mostly black fur and cat eyes, but their main difference is that adults are the size of a big bodied teenage nicheling. They behave like wanderers, but their speed is increased by 2 points and their strength is decreased by 1. They have a chance of spawning in port tiles as a family on any island but they can be toggled on and off, and they will breed with each other and are capable of building nests to have their babies, but you can steal those nests if you want. They compete with you for food and are behave a lot like adam's family on home island, but a bit more fierce, as they will try to attack your babies even if you have not attacked them. Their default appearance is black, with pygmy body which looks like normal body but small, antlers and sometimes no horns, long snout, normal hind legs, medium or swimming tail and double runner legs or double velvet paws, but they can have any paw except wings, bearyena paw, or mammoth foot. Their appearance can vary a bit depending on the island, but they always have cat eyes. There are benefits to them, for example, you can make them extinct on an island if you kill the entire population, also, predators treat them like normal nichelings, so they can be a great distraction. Also, because they are a subspecies, you can breed with them. they are really attached to their family, so to get one in your pack you can only invite a baby in the nest, the baby will join your pack and you could control it, by breeding with it, you could get these Exclusive genes: Cat eyes: + 3 eyesight Pygmy body: All the benefits of normal body but with 2 speed and 0 strength black fur P immunity: An exclusive immunity( maybe lets you invite adult pygmys into the pack but likely not) Finally, there could possibly be a rare variation of these that acts like a rogue female, it breeds with your males and the baby joins their pack, this not only means that you could have a hybrid between the two subspecies against you, but it could also create some awesome stories of forbidden love and also traitors (one step closer to warrior cats)

  3. Something I've wanted for a while. Fur genes. It would have various effects. Medium Fur: +1 Heat Resistance, +1 Cold Resistance (Unlocked at start) Thick Fur: +2 Cold Resistance, +1 Defense, -1 Heat Resistance (Travel to the mountains) Thin Fur: +2 Heat Resistance, +1 Scentless, -1 Cold Resistance (Travel to the savanna or jungle) Slick Fur: +2 Cold Resistance, +1 Swimming (Perform Swim 50 times) Feathers: +1 Heat Resistance, +1 Cold Resistance, +2 Flight (Invite creatures with this gene into your tribe) Fur genes are disabled by Armored Body. To balance out fur genes and heat/cold resistance, the resistance that is required to be able to not get hurt by heat/cold would be slightly higher.

  5. I actually put this in a huge mega-post but someone told me that I should do it separately New Forest Biome features: -There will be several different kinds of forests: -Beech: -Tall beech trees, Some trees will have honeydew, occasionally there will be a huge bounty of beechnuts that lasts for 4 days. -Survival is hard as berries and other things only spawn in occasional clearings, ferns spawn, which can give you nesting material and regrow in 3 days. -Small mice skitter on the forest floor and provide 1 food each. -The trees have 4 nesting spots near the top. -Bearyenas spawn. -New Zealand: -Covered in plants everywhere, plenty of berries and other plants that provide food. -No predators spawn except for birds: New predators/prey for this biome(that suit it); -Falcon:Attacks your babies. Weaker than Bluebirds, drops 2 meat. -Lizara: A large green lizard thing that attacks your babies(Takes multiple hits to kill young, you get a notifcation when it attacks) drops 4 food. -Giant Stoat: Attacks everything it finds, drops 10 meat. Is a giant stoat that's fast and strong. -Fish spawn in ocean, razorinahs don't spawn, instead, clownkoi spawn. -Sealion: A weird combo of a seal, a sea lion and a lion, looks like a giant seal with a mane, drops 20 food. -Wings appear a lot in this biome -There are tree ferns, several fruit-producing trees and ferns instead of grass. -There are large podcarps like rimu and totara that have 3 seperate branches for you to nest on. -It's relativeley rare. -There are beaches with water. Pine/Spruce: A generic pine or spruce forest with mountain predators and pine nuts. Oak: A bunch of oak trees. Mixed: -A mixed forest with all trees except beech, has a new kind of tree that produces food: Maple. -Has your generic grasslands predators.

  6. I think it would be great to have more settings for the sandbox mode. For example toggle buttons for all predator types (want to remove rogue males? Just switch them off). Maybe we could also define stuff like "Maximal tribe size" to add some extra challenge or "Maxium age of animals" so our critters can live longer. Or maybe even some special rules like "Only one male allowed in the pack" or "Tribe can only eat meat".

  10. That's a wonderful idea! I want to have more play modes and that way it would be much easier Also I would really love to see a "blind genes" mode (that you can activate and desactivate) where you can never see the genes of your nichelings (to make the game more interesting) but you're able to actually see the family tree and change the nichelings' names.

  11. I like this idea as well. What about giving you the option to unlock a limited amount of genes in the mutation menu at the start of a sandbox save? Not many, and no prehistoric genes, just as a way to get your tribe adapted to the environment you want them to live in a little faster.

  12. It would be cool if there were different types of manes. Think of a nicheling with the mane of a lion! Here are my ideas: Small mane: Just few tufts of hair on the head +1 attractiveness Medium mane: The current mane +1 cold resistance Big mane: The mane of a lion +2 cold resistance -1 heat resistance +2 attractiveness Tuft mane: Like medium mane exept this comes with ear tufts and if you have medium tail, it gets a tail-tip-tuft and double effect. Females display eartufts (and tail tip) they also get effects. +1 hearing Double effect for medium tail + attractiveness Dominance order: Medium mane > Small mane > Big mane > Tuft mane Edit: 23rd of February 2020 Updated artwork! For comparison, no mane (so basically females with any mane type other than tuft-) Small/short mane: Medium mane: Big/lion mane: Tuft mane: (male:) (female:)

  13. Alright, so I've seen some suggests asking for some type of creature creator/demo mode or whatever. I have been working on this for a while and I thought I'd make a new post since there's a lot more than just "A demo mode". This is gonna be mostly made up of pictures from what I call "Tutorial Mode" and I'll leave a link to a page with pictures without the text from tutorial mode. So first you can access this mode from the home screen like so: And then you would start at the creature creator (and to turn on tutorial mode you do this first (tutorial mode can be either be functional just with the yellow text or an example that goes away after you click)): Which can take you to either the creature list or the select mate screens which look like (also note that the scroll on the right on all screens is not accurate, and is just there to display its existence): (Where you can import creatures from save files like this: ) And confirming a breed brings you to the offspring list which is: Where there are trait statistics and custom filters (list of traits made by @Aysling here: https://strayfawnstudio.com/community/index.php?/topic/626-nicheling-sort-filter-and-select/&page=0#comment-2030) : Or you can go to the punnett square: And from anything outside of the creature lists, you can go to the gem colors (which you can find individually here: https://strayfawnstudio.com/community/index.php?/topic/646-customizable-and-programmable-gem-colors/) And the color cycle looks like this: And after all of that, you could use the creatures you used to start in sandbox mode like this: (Picture in production) So yea, that's all of it. Please let me know of any mistakes I might have made since this was a lot or of any logical inconsistencies. If you want to see the pictures without the text from tutorial mode, you can go to this link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/16dVKParfTHqHpSsuPD_UA_6cozEJ94_4Wtxpff6lIsE/edit?usp=sharing

  15. Ability for a niche to have 2 different eye colors could occur when mating with a bear-hyena. The bad part is 2 different colors can be a sign of distemper in the wild, so maybe the niche is stronger but also scoots away from the pack.? It might also have to be a certain distance away from other pack members or will attack?
    1 point
  16. There can be small birds flying around and you would have to have wings to fly and catch them. They can be 3+ food.

  17. I recently tried using gem colors to keep track of breeding groups, but it got really tedious that I had to change the gem color of all the babies and I began to lose track. Maybe if both parents have the same gem color, then the baby will too? Another idea is a 50% chance of either parents' gem colors if they're different.

  18. So there are genes like derp snout and deformed paw, but there isn't a bad body gene. It's name would be Deformed body or some other name like Hunched body or Cripple Back. It would come with -1 speed, -1 attack, and -1 collecting because the hunched/crippled/deformed body would restrict the nicheling's ability to do actions a normal bodied nicheling would be able to do. While all of this sounds really bad, the chance of getting it would be low because it would be rogue exclusive, non-mutatable, and a recessive gene. Also it would give +1 Distasteful Appearance because of how ugly they would look, and I doubt a carnivore would want to eat them

  19. OLD IDEA, LOOK AT EDIT I always feel sad when a Nicheling dissappears from the family tree. Even ones who have family still dissappear at some point... My favorite Nichelings and such, i dont get to remember what they look like that easily when this happens. Im hoping maybe the Devs can make a scroll for the family tree? I know most people would like to be able to look through many of their generations. With a scroll, you would be able to look at your oldest Nichelings and recent Nichelings. I know one or two problems may occur, as such as a very, VERY long game's generations. {I think it would be fine if the oldest Nichelings would be.. "erased" in that situation) Edit: Thanks to everybody who voted this up. I now realize how much lag would be made. So, i think the best way to save files is that every 3 generations or so, the family tree would be saved to the menu to be seen. The tabs would say "generations 1-3". You would find this in the menu game/tribe tab, once you click on the game's/tribe's tab. To still prevent lag, the devs could add a notification asking to delete an old game's tree, such as 9 generations ago. Note: whenever i say "game", i mean not Niche, but the game you are saving the tree in

  20. In my favorite tribe (the Kikonokos), we have some pretty weird Bluebirds. First of all, there's three of them. Two of them are friends... ...and two are enemies. (Bluebird Battles!) And now they're circling a tree. What's going on with these three?? Meanwhile, the Stagmoles are having parties because these birds don't seem to care about them. Note: THESE ARE ALL THE SAME BLUEBIRDS. I think they're becoming more civilized because they live above 28 (Yes, 28, I overbred) Nichelings with some weird naming traditions.

  21. The naked ram rat is like a naked mole rat with ram horns, it overtakes mole holes and builds its home around them. A pregnant queen has a chance of spawning on the port tiles of any island with moles, she is the size of a dodomingo, and looks like a naked mole rat queen, with a long body and golden ram horns. She will move every time a nicheling moves and has very bad senses, making her an easy meal, ans she gives 15 food, so its very useful. After she finds the mole burrow, she will get rid of the mole and enter it, staying underground and changing the appearance of the burrow. During the night, she will have babies, that will make their own burrows in a radius of 6 tiles from the queen's and overtake other mole burrows in the area. Males have red horns and females have blue horns, they give 5 food and they are both shorter than the queen. They take one day to grow and will start digging the day after, and there can be 6 burrows in the radius aside from the queen's. The males behave like moles, they stay in their burrows after they dig them, but they will alert any other ram rat in a 2 tile radius if they notice you. They will sometimes go out and behave like bunnies, but they will deal 2 damage if you can not kill them in one blow. Females are easier to hunt, but if the population around the queen is too big or the queen dies, they will leave and search for a mole burrow or a hole that a nicheling dug up and turn into a queen, establishing a new colony. The queen will come out every 3 days, so you can try to hunt her. They can become your most valuable food source, but they could also be a problem if they are too close to your berries or nuts, so you can control the population and farm them, making sure their burrows are in good places, or you could get rid of them, if you kill the queen and all females and queens they will be unable to brred and eventually go extinct on the island.

  22. Sorry for the very late response, I still have not found out what made my game re-install. I downloaded the the new update hit play then niche said "install" so I did then, my game was deleted and a new game was downloaded. Though this is odd, I found a way to get to the save files. After finding the save files, they did not work immediately due to the fact that the game had re-installed and was on a early version. After messing around with game versions, I got my save files to work. Although this re-install problem may have seemed bad... I was able to get everything back. I do hope that I will find the source of the problem though. If i do, I will be sure to tell you right away. Also... sorry i this was a waste of your time Thank you for replying so quickly and trying to help me!

  25. Soo with my formula you need 10 parts (untested). Tell me if it can be optimized X = NOT(S) K = NOT(L) V = AND(R,K) N = AND(X,V) H = OR(L,S) G = AND(R,S) Y = OR(H,G) J = NOT(R) C = AND(J,Y) Z = OR(S,N)

  26. I'll try I see why you want a truth table part ! = not | = or & = and Z = S | (!S & R & !L) C = !R & ((L | S) | (R & S))

  30. Well, then it could probably prey on them, although the Ibecko or Beagurll might at least try to attack back and defend themselves. The Kittallow could be an easy prey if the Pythadillo gets to their nests above the water. Although, given that your suggestion for the Pythadillo says that their habitat is savannahs, swamps, and jungles, while cliffs would most often appear in the mountains and beaches, an encounter is unlikely.

  32. It would be really cool to set this up with modified playmodes and maybe eventually have it as a custom challenges mode where users can submit challenges and the game actually restricts the user. So many times I've started a challenge and forgotten or abandoned it. would be so good to have the game re-inforce them haha

  33. Sounds fun to me. It's not unheard of in the animal kingdom either (like how ants farm aphids). The main thing holding this back is how long it takes to kill a dodomingo lol.

  34. I'm not a fan of this idea. While baby dodomingos would be cute, I don't think that this is necessary.

  35. I love this idea! I generally tend to lean towards water creatures more, since they're so cool, but after exploring a bit of the ocean, the fish go away and the life from it dissapears. I'd really like to see an improved water biome on all the islands, it would be the best update (almost) ever!

  36. Yeah, what's that? Does it have a name? Will it explode when shot and does it have some lava in it that's flowing to the centre of gravity? And the hammerhead looks cool! Or hot in this case...

  38. Edit: 1) Yes, it's Espeon. 2) I know the design isn't realistic but I like it. Though, I wouldn't mind a slender lookin' prehensile tail that wasn't a twin tail. 3) I put the picking a berry thingy because I was confused as to how fishing tail worked (till I saw some fanart), so I thought this might help ppl. 4) It'd give +2 collecting, nothing else. You'd have to unlock it by collecting uh.. 100 times?

  39. My daughter (she'll be ten next week) spends 2-3 hours a day on this game, and she was beyond excited about the new update. I asked her, "If you could add anything to Niche, what would it be?" Her reply was that she wanted to be able to tame "all" the animals. "Like, maybe you could find babies and tame them and have a tribe of" each of the different animals on the islands. Probably a long shot, but she didn't hesitate a second about it when I asked her. :) Anyhow, thanks for the game. She loves it.

  40. There could be more sicknesses than the common cold, like some deadly diseases, that can kill a nicheling in a few days, or can be paralyzed and get only one move per turn for the rest of its life, or even one that stunts your gwoth, yet you age.

  41. Edit: For a long time I've felt like I just want to delete this suggestion. It's pretty mean to ask the devs to redo their whole pattern system, after all the hard work hey put into it. Only thing I actually have a problem with, is the fur colors. So if you could tone those down a bit, that would be enough! Oh, the old beautiful niche! I miss it so much! One thing I've noticed lately, is that the new fur colours bother me a lot. They're so unrealistic! I'm tired of pink nichelings. All screenshots in this post are from Seri! Pixel Biologist!'s videos and @Fishyfishyfishy500 But I know that many people love the current pattern and color system as it is. Plus sometimes some really cool colors and patterns come trough. So it should be a toggleable thing. You could choose to use either the old fur colors(+ one extra shade of brown) or the new fur colors. Incase you have never played with the old colors, here are some screenshots of them: Well what about patterns? They would be toggleable too. You could choose the current system or what I'm about to explain next. This system would create more realistic looking patterns with more realistic colours. The DNA would include following color related genes. Following DNA has this nicheling's color genes: Geneslots from left to right: Albinism Melanism Fur color Eye color Horn color Mane color Pattern (Dots, stripes, mask or warning dots) White spotting (works the same way as white spotting does with cats. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhGikt4BQtA&pbjreload=10) Pattern shape (More info of that pattern shape E can be found here) White spotting shape (none, white paws, white tummy, bicolor, white with colored spots, van, fully white) Pattern density White spotting size Pattern darkness (Invicible, light, medium, dark, black) White spotting vicibility (Invicible, faded, medium, bright) Tortoiseshell gene (Info can be found here) Related topics: (Go vote them, please!)

  42. An interesting way to play this game is as a simulation of evolution, that is, with minimum input from yourself, to see what kind of form the nichelings would take based on their environment. This new mode beside story and sandbox would allow that playstyle to its full extent: As much or more pre-game customization as in sandbox mode, but AI-controlled nichelings ingame. You can: Look at their genetics, change the speed of the game (perhaps even automatic Day changes? If so, it should be disalbable), and a button to cause Migration (the youngest nichelings move to the Migration Plattform and then to the next Island). This way, Niche could serve as a simulator for evolution, population genetics, and ecology. The suggestion originally comes from my evo-devo prof who saw me and some friends play Niche in the cafeteria and started a conversation.

  43. I'm so glad you suggested this! I made an account just to post something similar because I really feel it would benefit the game and add even more replayability to it! The game Don't Starve has a similar 'toggleable' menu that lets you choose between 'off, less, default, and more' for all factors at the start of a new game including: spawn rate of various resources (i.e in Niche this would be berry bushes, trees, fish, bunnies, etc) enemies (balance bears, bearyenas, artic foxes, apes, etc) weather (rain, sun, etc.) other factors (creature lifespan length, number of wanderers, number of rogue males, # of ice tombs generated etc). This really lets you customize your game play and improves the longevity of the game. It would allow us to tell more stories, like say you wanted to simulate a drought and have your creatures survive, or do a minimal resources survival run. It would also let people customize the game for their own play style. For instance, I don't like the spawn rate of the balance bears. My tribe of 15 has killed over 6 of them, I would definitely choose a lower spawn rate for them if I could. I don't want to eliminate them, I just don't enjoy being chased constantly. Also, sometimes I just want to play a relaxing game, and it would be nice to put the game on easy mode with high resources and just chill out and breed nichelings that look cool! I've attached what the toggle menu from 'Don't Starve' looks like. It's just picture icons of the various resources/options, with the toggle selection for each.

  44. If combined with the suggestion about having options to adjust sandbox mode and how it is played, sure. Personally, however, I would turn it off. Afaik, no so thing exists irl, and skewed male/female ratios are a real problem in some cases, at least for humans. Sometimes when you flip a coin 8 times, you get 6 heads just because chance is weird that way. I like it that way, and it doesn't hurt gameplay at all from my perspective, but I can see why it would bother others.
    1 point
  45. It would be cool for an option to not be able to see the genes, but it can be turned off from Settings. That way you can play a Blind Genetics Challenge and go to the Family Tree without accidentally seeing your creatures. And, when you decide to finish your challenge, you can turn off Blind Genetics and see all of those genes your creatures have been hiding all of this time

  47. Yes! This way the sandbox would really feel like a sandbox!

  48. About the lag for longer games, someone suggested that they'd be stored in boxes instead of scrolling so a box for generation 1 and or 2 and then another box for generation 3. That way only one or two boxed will be open (or scroll through) and the other ones wouldn't be loaded. In addition to that we could have the option to export the file to see it whole?
