  1. But what about color combinations?? You wouldn't be able to have a pink Nicheling with Wings because you have to have red + white, but you can't have that when you have Butterfly body. I think it would be better if it was something like the top and bottom bits are the fur color (both colors combined) and the middle part the pattern color (both colors combined), like @Pokestardragacraft said. Patterns on the pattern colored part would just not show up. Even better than this, it could just all be the same color. Then we wouldn't have weirdly colored body parts.

  2. I like the idea of making flight available with a body! Then, you can focus on collecting with the paws.

  3. Nichelings should be able to graze on certain types of grass with a herbivore mouth, or a Grazing snout.

  6. Basically, a new set of hind legs (given that we only have three currently) that would increase speed. I think that it would be useful, especially with all the paw genes that don't provide speed. The new hind legs would add 3-5 speed (probably 4) instead of the regular 2, although maybe it won't add swimming as a trade off. For appearance, I think it could either look like an ostrich leg, a cheetah leg, or a gazelle leg.

  7. How about "Prestige" system you can find in many games? After you unlock all upgrades, you may buy expensive prestige to lose all upgrades, but weapons will have more slots, this is another way to do it

  8. I think that like cats and dogs in real life, Nichelings should be able to hold their kits in their mouths. The baby could be carried as soon as it is born, and can be carried up until two gems. Maybe also big bodied or large bodied creatures could carry lean bodied creatures like how in the wild sometimes animals will carry the weaker members of their packs or family. It would really help out when you have this one baby that runs out of energy before making it to the port, and you can just pick them up and leave the island. It would also make it easier so that the blue birds couldn't reach the baby. - Niches can only carry their babies till 2 gems! - Babies that are carried up until two gems will not grow, and the child may take slight damage due to not being able to grow. They will be dropped onto available tiles next to the mother, if none than baby will stop growing until put down. - You CANNOT do anything besides walking when holding a kit in its mouth. - Rare chance that a bluebird may still attack a scruff carried nicheling, however parent can fight back.

  9. It would be nice to have more weather types in Niche, not only for immersion but for gameplay as well. The new antenna gene would also benefit from this change by having more weather to sense. I have compiled a list of possible new weather types below. Fog sight reduced by -2 white fur increases camouflage by +2 Thunderstorm all animals have a chance to be struck by lightning lightning has a chance to start a wildfire Hail all animals have a chance to be stunned animals are protected by taking shelter Suggestions on how these new weather types could be improved are welcome.

  10. Alright, so I've seen some suggests asking for some type of creature creator/demo mode or whatever. I have been working on this for a while and I thought I'd make a new post since there's a lot more than just "A demo mode". This is gonna be mostly made up of pictures from what I call "Tutorial Mode" and I'll leave a link to a page with pictures without the text from tutorial mode. So first you can access this mode from the home screen like so: And then you would start at the creature creator (and to turn on tutorial mode you do this first (tutorial mode can be either be functional just with the yellow text or an example that goes away after you click)): Which can take you to either the creature list or the select mate screens which look like (also note that the scroll on the right on all screens is not accurate, and is just there to display its existence): (Where you can import creatures from save files like this: ) And confirming a breed brings you to the offspring list which is: Where there are trait statistics and custom filters (list of traits made by @Aysling here: https://strayfawnstudio.com/community/index.php?/topic/626-nicheling-sort-filter-and-select/&page=0#comment-2030) : Or you can go to the punnett square: And from anything outside of the creature lists, you can go to the gem colors (which you can find individually here: https://strayfawnstudio.com/community/index.php?/topic/646-customizable-and-programmable-gem-colors/) And the color cycle looks like this: And after all of that, you could use the creatures you used to start in sandbox mode like this: (Picture in production) So yea, that's all of it. Please let me know of any mistakes I might have made since this was a lot or of any logical inconsistencies. If you want to see the pictures without the text from tutorial mode, you can go to this link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/16dVKParfTHqHpSsuPD_UA_6cozEJ94_4Wtxpff6lIsE/edit?usp=sharing

  12. Hi! yay, Love this game. so I have been thinking about it for a while now, watching people play the game and playing the game myself. There is this, ever so slight, annoying thing that occurs. Remembering characters names is one, and the other is, who am I limiting myself to breed to. This also ties into another problem. As your speeding around your biome, having everyone doing their various tasks, once in a while. as I hover over the "..." and I prepare to, remove grass, leaches, crack a nut, dig a root, or in general, do something on a space that one Nicheling is on with another Nicheling. I occasionally accidentally hit that heart icon instead. That brief moment of cold sweet washes over me as I realize that the resulting baby might be double immunity as I quickly check their genes. I begin the rush of moving the mother far away to a nest away from the tribe. Usually resulting in the sad eventual sick baby that I must leave behind. It occurs to me that if only there had been a way to prevent this accidental twitching click of mine. So I Thought it over, watching the Jessimew videos (It's how I've been learning to play), hearing her referring to mates. I realized then, that it would be an amazing option too actually have a setting in your Nichelings profiles to designate a specific mate if you want one. This way. If your like me, with a trigger finger twitch, even if you hit that dreadful heart, if your accident female or even male already has a specified mate, instead of mating you get a failed breeding message, the reason being, "this female/male is already mated and has rejected you, better luck next time" or something like that. This will only stop you/me from accidentally breeding to a female or male that has a chosen mate I specified. All other aspects of the game would remain the same. And when a mate dies or is on another island, they will automatically drop from the mated menu. I have no art for preview as to how it should look, but this is my idea, Hope you guys like it and think it might work.

  13. Hello, I think it would be a nice think to add an option to change the name of savefiles after they were created. I often end up with 3 or more savefiles that are titled ''New game'' or weird stuff like ''agkhlsderflz'' (I know very good name huh) when I create new saves to test things out. Then I realize I like playing with those saves but am unable to change for a better name. I guess it would be a helpfull adition for people that are bad at naming like I am. Aditionally, maybe a random savefile name generator could be nice to help the naming too! That's my suggestions, thank you for reading!

  14. If you have you had a problem with predators attacking you even though you have a distasteful appearance, well I do I don't know about you but I think that if a nichling has a distasteful appearance rouge males won't breed with them and predators will think that there not yummy because they look bad. that is the update that i want for niche

  15. Hi everyone We now start the 4th GIF competition! This time we have an OPEN topic. So feel free to create any kind of awesome GIFS! No restrictions. The best two GIFS win a Steam key for the Closed Alpha of Nimbatus. Deadline to enter is Thursday, 28th of June. (Winners will be announced shortly after). Here are the rules: Post your GIF right here in this thread. Multiple entries per person are allowed. Only GIFs recorded with the demo version are allowed in this competition. @Roger, @Markus, @Micha and @Philo will pick 2 favorites. There will be only awarded one key per person. If you won in a previous contest, we won't award you another key. Please note: You can use [F9] to generate an animated GIF of the last 6 seconds gameplay, but feel free to use other tools. Remember that the best GIF wins! Tell an interesting story with your GIF. For this contest the best looking GIF wins. We'll have contests which award pure logic/cleverness at a later time. We maybe show some of these cool gifs on Twitter, Reddit, etc. Please only post here if that's ok with you. Tipp: The GIF capture tool hides bad framerates. If you turn off the Bloom because of performance reasons, turn them on before recording the GIF. The game might have a low frame rate, but the resulting GIF should run smoothly and might result in nicer looking GIF because of the effects.

  18. I know it's super duper unlikely, but I had this thought so I'm going to share it: What if there was a playback feature that shows your progress from the starting couple all the way until now? Not a play by play, but like, for example: "Mela and Ronu made 5 babies, those 5 babies scattered throughout the island, one staying in the center while the other four went in each cardinal direction, and each of those five babies' families proceeded to evolve differently. Baby#1's family stayed exactly the same as Mela and Ronu. Baby#2's family up north evolved to be resistant to the cold and have white fur. Baby#3's family down south evolved to be resistant to heat and have yellow fur. Baby#4's family to the east evolved to fly and have beaks now. Baby#5's family to the west evolved stinky tails and toxic bodies." Or maybe just a fast forward version of the actual gameplay? Like super fast, to show the rapid progression from Mela and Ronu to their five very different descendant families? I know this is a long shot and very likely not possible, but it was a cool thought I had while playing, because I realized only a couple generations in that my babies have spread apart and started evolving separately thanks to the wanderers I've bred them with.

  21. Thank you! ❤️ "12 flight seems like too much to me" I disagree, because while 12 flight seems great in theory, you must take into account the fact that you're giving up strength and gathering options in favor of all that movement, plus you'd still be garbage underwater and don't even get me started on carnivorous plants. I think if you /really/ want to, you should be allowed to have that 12 flight, because you're giving up a lot for it. Meanwhile, the nichelings that specialize in just wings or just the Butterfly Body have so many more options available to them. 1. By dominant fur color I mean the color on the top, and the recessive on the bottom. For example, a pink nicheling with white on top and red on bottom would have segments 1 and 3 as white and segment 2 as red. Patterns aren't related to this, so you can still have all the pattern options of the other bodies. 2. I actually provided the three types, not as three separate types for the game, but as three options for the one body in the game. By that, I mean that I provided three possibilities for the game designers to choose from to place in the game. /Either/ Type 1, 2, or 3; not all of them. I mean, if they WANT to put all of them in there, I think that'd be great, but that wasn't my original intent. As to how one might get them, I think that's a very good question. Perhaps gathering a certain amount of fruit from carnivorous plants? XD That way I can hate those stupid plants a little bit less? They've taken so many of my babies in the past I've never gotten over my grudge against them. 3. By "+2 intimidate" I mean it would function similarly to Bearyena Snout and Saber Tooth Fangs, but it'd be passive rather than something you have to activate yourself. In other words, foes wouldn't want to approach a nicheling with the intimidate ability unless the foe didn't have any other food options.

  22. I actually made speedy hindlegs for my more hybrids suggestion, and I bring that up because I made mine +3 speed and +1 swimming. I did this because a key point of hindlegs is to have at least +1 speed and +1 swimming so every creature could move. The speed is more obvious, but for the swimming, imagine a gilled-creature being born in the ocean with no swimming as an example.

  23. Thank you~! I like it, too, and I felt Butterfly would be best for that purpose- it gives the same amount of flying ability as one wing, so if you want a 'professional' flying nicheling then having two bird wings would still be the best option, but for those of us who like pretty things and don't want to lose our collecting prowess, Butterfly Body would be best ❤️ Just imagine a precious little Short Snout with Round Ears, beige dominant and chestnut brown recessive fur colors on the Type 1 Butterfly Body, with Antennae, Double Nimble Fingers, and a Fishing Tail~!

  26. When you unlock a gene to mutate the message only says that you have unlocked a gene, not which one. I personally can find this to be confusing, especially during the beginning of the game. So when you open up the menu the highlighted menu the unlocked one would be highlighted or if the unlocked gene could be specified this would be less confusing. Once you close the menu the highlight would go away, therefore making sure that you can not confuse it with other unlocked ones later. Sometimes I unlock two or three, the same idea would apply and all three would would be highlighted. Another Way to do this would be to have the message say "you unlocked a new gene to mutate. You unlocked _______." Then you would just have to scroll over the genes to find the one you want.

  27. pretty much, also some skinks live in aboned trapdoor spider burrows and don't have to worry about the smoke or heat when a fire passes and termite mounds efficient ventilation and material make them literally fireproof

  28. It should also be dangerous to be in the water during a thunderstorm as your Nichelings could get electrocuted!

  29. Honestly this isn't a bad idea. The first thing that comes to mind is the Spore species timeline where it shows the major events in a species' evolution. If this were implemented I imagine it wouldn't be a thing for videos but something akin to what the afforementioned game had. I think it would begin with "[insert starting pair names here] arrived on a new island!" It would then track the days at which children were born, deaths occurred, wanderers invited in, and new genes unlocked. I think this would make a very interesting way to see how far our nichelings have come, though I do fear the space it would require.

  30. Maybe it's dangerous to stay under trees during thunderstorms

  31. This is mostly a problem in large tribes. Groups of creatures are set apart by their gem color, but then with so many creatures to manage you forget about changing the youngest creatures' gems to the right color and all the groups start running into each other. I think creatures should be able to inherit gem color from their parents, to help with organization of tribes so that the gatherers don't mix with the fighters, the creatures being bred for an achievement not mixing with the rest of the tribe, etc. Thanks for reading my suggestion.
    1 point
  32. In addition, I think wild creatures should spawn with random gem colors, not just green all the time.

  33. We definitely need something to pick from the cacti so why not the beak Also you could then breed it onto your winged creatures and have them actually be able to collect stuff when there aren't any trees around.

  37. I'd prefer if there was an option to add your own syllables somewhere! I developed my own Niche naming system, and new syllables would ruin everything. It'd be nice, however, to have the option to add my own made-up syllables to be potentially randomly selected for the generated names of new-born children. (Some of those syllables are Ke-, Ya-, Ni-, Sa- for females, and Ki-, Rai- and Tu- for males.) Since every single syllable changes the name's meaning, I'd understandably be upset if the syllables suggested in this suggestion were added, however I very much endorse the option of adding your own!

  41. I think small idle movements would be good, but no walking animations and such. It would be odd for niche's style in my opinion. Plus, think of the times you can spam the walk buttons. How would the walking animation cope? But, I love the suggestion! Upvote my friend!

  42. Okay, if this is added alongside certain other suggestions, there should be interactions with those. Here are some ideas: Sandbox Customization options: Since Parravens could potentially change the gameplay drastically, both the spawning of their colonies and the ability to befriend/enrage them should be able to switch off. Challenge Mode - Islands Falling Apart; Volcanic Island: Due to their high intelligence and mobility, it would make sense for a Parraven colony on a doomed island to move away on their own. On the next island, you may have a chance to meet a group of Parravens with the same relationship status. Wether that group is the same as before or simply another group which has been told about your nicheling tribe would be up to interpretation by the player. Scruff Carrying: A nicheling should be able to carry a Parraven chick the same way, which allows for faster and safer transportation at the risk of its parents misinterpreting it as predatory behaviour. New Weather Types: In fog, the range of their sight would be much smaller, but they could still fly out. In thunderstorm and hail, they won't fly at all. Beaver Teeth Tree Cutting: If you cut down a tree carrying a colony of Parravens, they will move to the closest fitting tree, turn hostile, and tell any other Parravens about it, making any other Parraven you may meet hostile as well, even on other islands. This effect lasts a several generations of your extremely foolish groundlings. Avian features (several suggestions): A bird-like appearance should give a small relationship bonus. So, what do you think of these interactions? Better ideas?

  46. About the lag for longer games, someone suggested that they'd be stored in boxes instead of scrolling so a box for generation 1 and or 2 and then another box for generation 3. That way only one or two boxed will be open (or scroll through) and the other ones wouldn't be loaded. In addition to that we could have the option to export the file to see it whole?
    1 point
  47. I would like a family tree that lists all the generations as well. Including the nichelings that never had children. It would help them from fading away forgotten. Though I do see this as an issue for longer games. Perhaps we could have it be longer, but to prevent lag after a point we could have the full tree as some sort of file we could export. I'm not a game dev, so the difficulty might be more than it's worth.
