  1. I ended up with my little scorpion family all in one spot, they're all so cute and also I'm kinda proud of myself, I haven't actually unlocked the scorpion tail yet, I was just lucky enough to get a wanderer with the tail and through some very selective breeding, I've managed to keep it in my tribe! I love my little desert family

  2. I know that there are other suggestions for family tree improvements, and here are links to all of them: https://strayfawnstudio.com/community/index.php?/topic/594-family-tree/ https://strayfawnstudio.com/community/index.php?/topic/2466-show-lifespan-in-family-tree-view/ https://strayfawnstudio.com/community/index.php?/topic/2486-show-islands-in-family-tree/ https://strayfawnstudio.com/community/index.php?/topic/2512-static-family-tree/ https://strayfawnstudio.com/community/index.php?/topic/2537-highlight-compatible-immunity-in-family-tree/ This idea contains all of them and more here in this picture (no I did not make it compatible with my creature creator on purpose *cough cough*): So starting at the top, we have the static button. For more information, you can view to original link, but the reset button is my idea. When creatures are erased from the family tree, the family tree leaves their space open and with the static feature, this can get annoying for some. The reset button allows for your family tree to reset as if you exited the game and came back so everything is in an orderly fashion. Next, there are the "P" and "G" buttons. The buttons stand for phenotype and genotype which lets you toggle what you can see. In this picture, the genotype button is deactivated which means you can no longer see the genotype both in and out of the family tree. Below that, there's a lifespan bar. The lifespan bar tells you exactly what you think it tells you. You can hover over it for the same information you would get from hovering over it outside of the family tree. If the creature is dead like the one above, you will still be able to see their lifespan bar along with any damage they had when they died. You will also either be able to see how many days they have left or their cause of death depending on if they are still alive or not. The numbers on the left side of the screen are blocks for both the endless family tree idea and the island family tree idea. The blocks can either be automatic and save all creatures for a set number of generations (which can be by island if you choose to do so) or be set up for you to save your current family tree at any time. In the case of the automatic saves, a notification will let you know when you have filled all of your slots and ask you if you want to overwrite your top block for the next slot. At the bottom of the screen, you will notice two gene filters. The top filter will filter in blue whilst the bottom filter will filter in yellow. You may notice that there are no creatures that are yellow, but there are instead green creatures. This is because the two filters will work together meaning that if a creature has both traits, then the creature will appear green rather than yellow or blue. You may also notice that some creatures are a lighter shade of blue than normal and that the bottom green is also different than the rest. This is because the lighter shade of blue represents creatures who are homozygous for the trait in order to distinguish between heterozygous creatures. The different green reflects this as that is the only creature that is homozygous in both traits. A more subtle difference is that on the family tree itself is that creatures are outlined in different colors. There are five different colors: black, white, green, yellow, and red. Black represents that the creature is dead. White represents that the creature is alive. Green represents that the creature is compatible based on immunity and is toggleable via the button in the bottom right-hand corner of the tree (when clicked on again, it will turn gray and will not show any green, yellow, or red outlines) (after-thought, maybe clicking on the button again will show yellow and red outlines for one compatible gene and no compatible genes. Let me know if you think this should be all in one or if they should be separated out). Note that the black and white outlines are only present when the gene filter is being used due to there being no way of telling who is alive or dead when it is currently being used. Also note that only creatures of the opposite sex to the selected creature will have green, yellow, and red outlines. You will also notice a small lifespan bar above each creature as well as three dots to represent gems. The small lifespan bar will appear exactly how it appears in-game currently. The gem dots will change colors according to what they are set to as well. Finally, I propose some new filters: There are now three new icons: a creature, a clock, and a DNA icon. The creature will show the ages of creatures. The clock will show how much time a creature has left. (Sorry for the creature and clock icons, I didn't have any ideas for what they should be.) Below I will explain the DNA icon in more detail: As you can see, it is found under the attributes filter with a different color. The different coloration indicates that it does not show numbers but rather letters. You will see two O's for this creature representing offspring and a "P" for partner. Other letter codes include "F" for father, "M" for mother, "A" for aunt, "U" for uncle, "S" for sibling, "H" for half-sibling, "C" for 1st cousin, and "N" for niece or nephew. Everyone who is not related in these ways will not have a letter and will remain a face. This creature was a wanderer, so she does not have much.

  3. and how do you suppose it could work in Niche? if there were an "intelligence" gene, how would it work in game? as you said, the choices are made by the player. so every Nicheling has the intelligence of the player controlling it if you want them to throw things, maybe there could be a throwing paw or whatever but since they can't act on their own or let alone think for themselves, how would intelligence affect anything? you can't just throw around what you would like to see in a game like this without giving a solution as to how it could work in that specific game and what do you mean with "computer toy" games are games. they are for having fun, as are toys. there is little difference between a game and a toy, the only one that comes to mind is that a game has rules and a toy is the object you play (games) with and the goal of Niche is not to form a civilisation, it is to find an evolutionary niche. both is about evolution but there end the similarities. if you want a game like simearth you are at the wrong adress because the game has a different intention.

  4. Okay, so, blind eyes. Look cool, suck to have. Now, here's a question; Why can't they just move in scent view or hearing view? I get that its to keep blind eyes to being something that sucks, but blind creatures don't just sit around all day in real life waiting for someone to tell them where to go. So could the devs make it so they could move or collect and stuff in scent or hearing view? I feel like they should be able to considering real blind animals aren't completely helpless like they are in Niche. Oh well, tell me if you think we should keep them as they are or actually let our blind creatures not be helpless inmobile creatures.

  5. Okay, I know what you're thinking, but I have a very good reason for not putting on a head, tail, or coloring the legs: I wanted the full focus to be on the body! XD You will most definitely still have a tail and head and colored limbs, I just wanted to focus on the body. Speaking of the body, though, let me first focus on the actual main body then I'll get to the wings: The body is broken up into three sections. The top section of the body is very fluffy and puffy, similar to that of the Big Body, and takes on the dominant fur color. The middle section is smooth and takes on the recessive fur color. The bottom section is also smooth but matches the top section in taking on the dominant fur color. The middle and bottom sections are supposed to be round/cylindrical like a butterfly's body; I did my best to get that kind of impression. The middle section is where the top wings connect, and the bottom section is where the bottom wings connect, though since they're butterfly wings they look like it's all one big wing, so I guess it doesn't really matter when it comes to actually making the models for the game. XD Now for the wings attached to the body: Butterfly wings can vary from bottom [facing toward you] to top [when you view them from the back], so as a result I decided to draw three different types of butterfly wing. All of them offer +4 flying and you can fly with this body, but no swooping. Having two bird wings instead would get you a lot farther a lot faster, of course, but flying for this body is more or less a background ability; it's what you'll see below that's the real stars of the show. Type 1 [at the top with the gradient]: +1 attractiveness, +1 distasteful appearance, +1 poisonous [when being attacked] Type 2 [bottom left green one]: +2 camouflage +1 attractiveness Type 3 [bottom right yellow one]: +2 intimidate +1 distasteful appearance .::EDIT::. I figured it would be best to show a full body complete nicheling with this body as an example, so below I will do just that! Type 1: Type 2: Type 3: .::EDIT2::. I had the idea to draw out variations of the wings, so here we go! I included as many fur colors, horn colors, and eye colors as I could to make these Type 1 Variations! But first, a little info: The body's midsection is the recessive fur color, and the top and bottom are the dominant fur color. The wing's outline is the same as the horn color. The wing's semi-transparent gradient goes like this: The color closest to the body is the recessive eye color and the color closest to the tip of the wing is the dominant eye color. I replaced Violet with Pink because I like it better that way. Besides, pink stands out more. The wing's spots go like this: The big spots are the complimentary color to the dominant eye color [example: Blue-Orange, pink-yellow], and the little spots are the complimentary color to the recessive eye color. Now on to the wings!! Just the wings by themselves: The wings with the body outlines: [because I've been told these are easier to see] The full examples of wing variants with colored bodies: And for flavor, here we have an example of an Albino and a Melanistic nicheling:

  6. These genes are what allow nichelings to move, see, and interact at night. Ladies, gentlemen, and everyone in between, let me introduce you, Echolocation head Bat ears Night-seeing eyes These are Bat ears. Bat ears allow a nicheling to hear 4 around them, but give no heat resistance(like bog ears do). theyre about the same size as big ears, and are obtainable after "squealing" 25 times (squealing will be explained in the Echolocation head) mostly cosmetic, but still cool. This is Echolocation head. It looks simialar to a bat's head, and when sitting in a high position (like calling) you can make a squealing noise that allows everything within 3 tiles to become outlined with green, yellow or red (much like smelling/hearing, except it is seen on seeing, so everything around is also in color.) The affect lasts until said nicheling moves from its spot. The nose also has 2 smelling, 1 damage, and distasteful appearance. they are unlocked by squealing 50 times. These are Night-seeing eyes. They make a nicheling nocturnal, allowing them to move at night. If your tribe doesnt have this gene present, nights pass normally. IF so, the nights stop long enough for a nicheling with these eyes to move normally. (however, you cant move them during the day.) The gene also makes the eyes look a bit demonic, which can be fun if your going from a story perspective. The nichelings also only move during night if banished, and give birth by the time day comes. the eyes give a nicheling 1 normal sight, and 2 night vision. seeing and smelling apply the same at night. How does the night work? Any animal that would normally move during the day, would stay still at night. Any animal that would move during the night, move according to your nichelings moves. (example, a bunnil would stay still, while a bearyena would move twice, then sleep.) hope you like it! incase you couldnt tell, i REALLY WANT A NIGHT MODE!! its been an idea since the water update

  7. maybe if we say it is supposed to be a narwhal horn instead they would not mind in that case, I think 1 strenght and 1 attractiveness would be enough (though magical healing powers would be cool )

  8. or at least color it the same as the grass tiles around it

  9. I think our blind Nichelings should be able to move at least limited (if they could move just the same as the other Nichelings then there'd be no need for the blindness genes so limited movement) especially because wandering blind Nichelings just zip around like squirrels on crack.

  12. one thing that I tend to do is give breeding pairs matching last names(and sometimes also gem colors, as I'm seeing other people here also do); it makes them stand out both in the family tree and while looking at the creatures normally. (I also use it to track bloodlines over very long spans of time; EX: descends of a certain certain get a little diamond symbol in their names.)

  16. I think it would be cool to add a new game mode that makes things a bit more challenging. In this game mode the game starts with a tribe of animals (maybe around 5 or so). Things are peaceful for a short time and then the earth starts shaking. The island you are living on is slowly falling apart. Your tribe needs to reach the next island exit as fast as possible! And this is how it keeps being from now on. Every island you enter will fall apart after some time, so run for your lives! You only have a short amout of time to gather up resources before heading to a harder island. This adds an interesting time restriction to the game which makes every single decision more important. Maybe this could even be a story thing, like Adam's story. With a small intro and an end goal: Reach Paradise Island. An island full of food and where earth quakes can't reach you.

  24. squealing is like callling, so you can do it on a stump or tree, and it works well if you have little smelling or hearing in the tribe
    1 point
  25. Okay, this seems cool, but I'm confused. How does the squealing work? You say it works like calling, so normal nichelings would be able to do it on a stump or something..? I just don't get it.

  26. I think this is a really cool idea! Just wondering, if your entire tribe has the Night-seeing Eyes, how would the bunnils move during the day? Would they get a certain number of moves? Would they get an equivalent number of moves to the amount of turns you took? Same thing for all diurnal creatures.

It even looks like they've pushed aside the vines in some places to make tunnels. But maybe these cats are just strange, idk x3 But, yeah, tumbleweeds do make more sense that moving thorn bushes...

  32. in addition realism and cuteness, this could add some extra challenge- young nichelings without fully grown horns wouldn't gain any attack points from their horn genes until the horns finish growing.

  40. Before you read: I plan to post here more stories about the non nicheling creatures that inhabit the world of niche, writing from their point of view, so I would love to see what you think, so feel free to comment! Also if you want, you could try to re create part of the story in game! It was a dark day on the mountains, some time ago, a balance bear had separated a pregnant nicheling from her tribe. She managed to gain some distance and hide behind a rock. The bear lost her tracks, but the snowstorm was cold and relentless. She built a nest in desperation, using some of the white flowers she had, and she curled up to endure the cold. The next day, as the sun escalated the mountain, it revealed the frozen remains of the mother, and a snow white baby with grey ram horns sleeping by her side. Suddenly, a three mysterious creatures started rushing to their location. Three ramfoxes.- Well well well, what do we have here- Alpha, said. -Looks like lunch, lets feast!- Kevin exclaimed as he rushed to the baby, but Betty, the beta of the pack, stepped in front of him. -Wait- she whispered -Just look at him, does he not remind you of a baby ramfox?- Betty murmured in a sweet tone. -I do not care!- Kevin yelled as he lunged himself to the baby, sinking his teeth deep in its soft flesh... Or thats what he was thinking would happen. Instead, the baby just stared at him as he struggled to get a good bite in the nicheling's ultra hard body. - Don't you see it has armored body?- Alpha laughed. -Damn it, at least the mother does not have armor- Kevin insisted. -The mother is too cold to eat,- Betty replied. -Besides, if we can't eat the baby, why don't we keep him? We wont gain anything by just leaving him. -Have you gone mad!?- Kevin yelled. - How are we supposed to feed it? -Betty has a point- Alpha continued.- There are plenty of rabbils here, and one gives sufficient food for the four of us. Kevin started screaming. -DONT YOU SEE HE IS A NICHELING!!! Those greedy beasts invade our homes and steal our food! We have to always hide, and when we are so desperate that we are forced to eat their babies, they just kill us!- Betty kept her usual calm expression. -He wont become like the other nichelings if we raise him in the ways of the ramfox. He will grow as a ramfox and hunt with the pack, he would be a valuable hunter with his speed, and maybe he could even help us reason with the nichelings in the future.- Her words managed to really calm down kevin, and suddenly, he felt a warm touch in his tail. The baby hugged him firmly with a wide smile on his face. -Tata!- The baby smiled, forcing a smile on kevin's face too. -Yep, he fell for the baby already.- Betty whispered. As the seasons passed, the baby nicheling, Tata, grew up strong and adventurous, hunting with the ramfoxes, he was a valuable member of the pack, and being widely accepted. Alpha and Betty had two sons, Rascal and Scout. Those two, along with their adoptive brother Tata, became great hunters, but they kept getting in trouble. Rascal was the clown of the group, always joking, while Scout tried to befriend basically every mountain dweller, which worried his parents, but Tata showed a great interest for the nicheling tribe established in the mountainside. One day, the three of them got too close to nicheling territory while chasing rabbils. When they were about to catch their prey, they heard a terrified call. -RAMFOXES! Protect the babies! RUN! Warriors, please save us!- The brothers realized that the nicheling's nest was close, as a proud brown nicheling stumbled down the snowy mountain with a menacing claw. -Guys, I think we should go.- Rascal said as the warrior walked closer. -I may not be able to take you on alone- the warrior said,- but my partners will come. Tata stepped between the nicheling and his brothers. -This is just a misunderstanding.- He said confidently.- We mean no harm. -Hah!- The warrior laughed. - What a joke! You helping these beasts!? Just come help me kill them.- He pushed Tata aside and raised his claw. The foxes stepped back, but he swiped with extreme speed! However Tata managed to shield them with his armored body, causing the claw to bounce off. -YOU BARBARIC IDIOT!- The warrior roared. -If you are with these beasts, then you will perish too! Come here Bertha!- As he called, a great beast surged from the snow. The most terrifying thing a ramfox could ever see. A hybrid, with white fur and blood red eyes, the legs and head of a bearyena, and the speed of a nicheling, clearly old and close to expiring, but still fearsome and agile, it started rushing toward them. -HAH!- Rascal yelled.- That thing cant get past Tata! - Actually...- Tata whispered.- I think we should run. -FUDGE!- Rascal screamed as they started running. The chase was desperate. They were fast, but the hybrid started getting closer and closer. -Follow me!- Scout said. - I know of a place where we will be safe!- They made a sharp turn and started running by the mountainside, but the hybrid climbed up. As they neared a humongous pile of snow, the creature surprised them from above and jumped in front of them, getting between them and the giant snow pile. Dusk was transforming into night, and the old hybrid made her move. Showing her razor sharp teeth, she let out a war cry and pounced to them with meteoric force! BUT THE MONSTROUS SNOW PILE BURSTED TO LIFE! A great paw knocked the hybrid out of the air, and the balance bear revealed itself! With the strength of the mountain the bear roared as it crushed the beast beneath the snow. The king of the mountain let out a victorious snarl, as he turned towards the brothers, Scout being the only one not paralyzed by fear. The bear just smiled. -Let me guess- Tata realized. -Its one of your friends.- Yep- Scout said with a satisfied smile. -Lets go home bros, and thanks Snowflake. -Youre WeLcOmE!- The bear growled.

  42. Hello! I wrote a little story based on something that happened on a swampy hill island with a lone jungle tree on it. I hope that it is okay for me to post stories here! Anyways, enjoy! If you have any suggestions that I can use to improve my writing, please tell me! -------------------------- Important Characters: Lais - A female nicheling with moss brown fur. She has two claws, medium body, short snout, and ram horns. Kunuvan - A male nicheling with black fur. He has brown stripes, one runner's leg, one velvet paw, cracker jaw, and medium body. --------------------------- The Mysterious Tree // A Niche Story A warm breeze blew across the island, causing reeds and grass to rustle. Lais felt the wind blow through her fur, causing it to ruffle up slightly. Suddenly, she heard a splash in the river. Finally, a fish I can catch! She thought. However, when she looked at the water, she didn’t see anything. Realizing her prey had swam away, Lais let out a sigh. Because of her claws, she was unable to pick berries and was skillful when it came to catching fish, fighting, and hunting. Even if she could gather berries, the skill wouldn’t be all that useful. She did not have poison resistance and could therefore not collect the toxic berries that were found on a majority of the bushes in her swampy home. Lais continued to sit near the river, though she didn’t see, let alone catch, anymore fish. She scented the air and listened for movement in the reeds multiple times, though she could only detect the usual. No rabbils or stagmoles were nearby. At this point, she almost wished that a bearyena would show up. Why must no prey be present today? The sun was already high in the sky and she had been sitting in this same place since early in the morning. The young adult was desperately craving something to do. What if I explore a bit? The thought suddenly came to her. Why hadn’t she thought of it earlier? If she explored around the outskirts of her tribe’s territory, her boredom could end and she might be able to find something to hunt. The brown-furred nicheling walked away from the river and leaped onto a stump next to the beach. Now that she was on higher ground, she could get a better view of the area. Just beyond the territory, there were more reeds and thorns. Mixed in were a couple patches of grass. However, it wasn’t those things that caught her attention – it was something in the distance. A tree stood that was much taller than any she had ever seen. Its leaves appeared a different shade than those of a normal oak tree. They looked blue! Just then, a memory came to her. When she was a young child, hadn’t her grandfather, Kurota, told her a story of tall trees? Could this tree be the same type as the ones from his story? Even when she was younger, Lais had thought that they were just a myth! He had said that some of the trees held acorns while others didn’t. When they did, he had said that they tasted better than the ones that fell from regular oak trees. Though Lais had no cracking ability, she was curious as to what they tasted like. Still, there was one thing off – Kurota said that the tall trees could only be found in jungle biomes. This was a swamp! Either way, it piqued the interest of Lais. Without hesitation, she stepped off the stump and began to walk along the beach. Suddenly, she heard a noise from behind her. She quickly turned around, half expecting something to come out of the shadows and try to attack her. Instead, she was greeted by the face of Kunuvan, another nicheling in her tribe. “Sorry if I scared you. You startled me!” Lais stated. As the clawed nicheling spoke, Kunuvan had just finished opening a clam with his cracker jaw. Turning to face her, he said, “You didn’t scare me. I was just cracking open this clam.” He gestured towards it using his tail. “Anyways, where are you off to? Are you trying to catch some fish? Is there a bearyena nearby?” Lais was one of the strongest nichelings in the tribe. If a bearyena were to appear, she would be one of the first to help fight it. Kunuvan himself was quite weak. He wanted to be as far away from those beasts as possible. Since she was often by the river and rarely went towards the beach, he just wanted to make sure that there was no danger. As for Lais, she was very excited to see Kunuvan. He could crack nuts! She would have told him that she was going to hunt a rabbil, but his cracker jaw could be useful on this expedition. “I’m going towards that tall tree in the distance. Want to join me?” The brown-furred nicheling gestured towards the tall tree so that he knew what she was talking about. “I’m unsure. We’ll probably be gone for a few days. What if we run into any danger?” Kunuvan immediately realized that this was the wrong question to ask her. She could defeat a bearyena pretty easily. As for goldleeches, the two nichelings could lick them off of one another. “I’m sure we’ll be fine. Plus, we can eat some delicious acorns!” Lais was unsure if the tree actually held acorns, no matter if it was of the same type as the ones from Kurota’s story or if it was a totally different type of tree. “Alright, alright. I’ll join,” Kunuvan answered. He was afraid that he would hurt her feelings if he said no. “Thank you for coming along!” Lais’s voice was filled with happiness. Without waiting from a response from the striped nicheling, she began to run along the beach in the direction of the tree. Kunuvan grabbed the open clam in his jaw. Acorns or no acorns, they would need food on this mission. Afterwards, he followed after Lais and soon caught up to her. Due to his one runner’s leg, he was the faster one. However, he didn’t dare to take the lead. He made sure to stay just behind her as the two ventured. - Lais stopped next to a patch of reeds right next to another part of the river. Kunuvan and she were near the tree at this point. It was closer than either of them had expected. All they had to do was cross the river and get through another patch of reeds and grass. Then, they would arrive at their destination. Though she didn’t want to admit it, she was quite tired. By now, the sun had set and the star of night were shining in the clear sky. When she looked behind her, Lais could see that Kunuvan was tired as well. “I suppose we shall stop here for the night?” she stated. Kunuvan felt relieved when Lais finally stopped. Was she tired as well? “That sounds like a good plan. Anyways, are you hungry? I brought this,” he had dropped the clam in front of him. She took a step towards him and the clam. At his mention of food, she realized just how hungry she was. The last time she had eaten was the previous night. “Thank you,” she replied, taking part of the clam. Kunuvan took the other part. After the two ate, they fell asleep on the beach. - The next morning, the two woke up as the sun was beginning to rise. At this time, the sky was painted with shades of orange, pink and purple. The blue of day had not yet shown. Lais turned towards her companion. “Ready to start travelling again?” she asked. Now that it was day, her usual energy was restored. “Okay,” Kunuvan responded. The next part of their journey was crossing the river. The pair ran up to the stream. Though Lais had gone fishing many times, she had never actually swam. The brown-furred nicheling jumped into the water. She resurfaced a few moments later and climbed back onto the shore. Now it was Kunuvan’s turn. He did the same as his tribemate, jumping into the stream and resurfacing a few moments later. Once they were both on the other side, the pair shook the water out of their fur and began to run again. However, Kunuvan thought he noticed something on Lais’s shoulder. At that moment, he stopped. “Wait! Lais!” he called. “What is it?” she asked, turning around. The striped nicheling walked closer to her so that the two were only a few steps apart. Now that she wasn’t running, he could see her shoulder more clearly. He realized that his observation was correct. “There’s a goldleech on your shoulder,” he responded. At his words, she looked down at her shoulder. Sure enough, she had picked up a leech while swimming. It was a good thing that Kunuvan had noticed, as things would otherwise get bad for Lais. She moved the shoulder with the leech on it towards him. At the gesture, Kunuvan picked the parasite off her shoulder and tossed the now dead leech onto the beach. “There,” he stated. As soon as he had said those words, his companion took off running again. Letting out a sigh, he followed. She’s really excited about that tree. Speaking of the tree, they were now very close to it. - Now that the two young adults had arrived at the mysterious tree, it appeared larger and taller than ever. There were a few patches of dark green grass, some of which ended in odd twirls, surrounding it. Though the island was a swamp, this was a small patch of jungle grass. Therefore, the tree was definitely of the same type as the ones from Kurota’s story. If only he were here now! Once Lais looked up, her eyes widened in amazement. She couldn’t help but stare. “Wow,” she breathed. The tall tree looked nice at a distance, but it was absolutely stunning close up. While its leaves appeared blueish from far away, they were more of a blue-green close up. It reminded her of the ocean. Plus, a few vines hung off of its branches. Finally looking away from the tree, she glanced towards Kunuvan. “We have to tell the rest of the tribe about this!” she exclaimed. They would surely be awed by this, just as she had been. Why hadn’t anyone else explored this area before? Anyways, there was still one thing left to do – shake the tree. Using both of her claws, Lais gave it a nice hard push. Within a few moments, a couple of acorns fell and landed on the ground. Despite the tree’s size, the nuts looked identical to the ones that fell from normal oak trees. As for Kunuvan, he didn’t look up at the tree for very long. Gazing at it for more than a couple of moments made him feel dizzy. However, he agreed with Lais – it was pretty. To him, the grass surrounding them was the best part of the island’s jungle patch. The twirly grass was especially beautiful. A smile appeared on his face as he thought of mother nichelings using that grass to build a nest where they would give birth to and raise children. When his companion spoke, the dark-furred nicheling turned back towards her. Once more, he agreed. The tribe could use this patch to their advantage. Once the acorns fell, Kunuvan cracked one of them. Though they looked normal, he was kind of scared. What if they happened to be poisonous? At the same time, his mind came up with another thought: Why would such a pretty tree produce something deadly? He was still a bit worried, though the idea eased his fears. After he was done, he pushed half of the food towards Lais. He kept the other half for himself. The two nichelings savored every bit of food they ate. Kurota was right: these nuts tasted delicious! With stomachs full of the best food they had ever tasted, Lais and Kunuvan fell asleep shortly after they had finished their meal. - Just as the sky was beginning to gray with the light of dawn, a loud noise awoke the two nichelings. Assuming that a bearyena was behind it, Kunuvan immediately began scenting the air and listening for movements in the grasses. “Did you hear that?” he asked. “I sure did,” Lais responded. At that moment, they both heard the noise again. This time, the branches of the tree rattled and a couple of leaves fell onto them. “What is going on?” Kunuvan asked. Now he was beginning to get anxious. Why did the tree make such a weird noise? Had someone shook it? If so, why were they up this early in the morning? However, that idea was ruled out. When Lais shook the tree, it didn’t rattle this much. Was something or someone up in those branches? The tree seemed too tall for anything to live in it. Even bluehawks didn’t fly up that high. “I don’t know,” Lais answered. Though she didn’t want to admit it, she was getting anxious as well. Looking up at the tree, she shouted, “Whoever or whatever you are, show yourself!” She was ready for something to come out of the tree, whether it be bluehawk, winged nicheling, or something else. The ‘something else’ idea was what worried her. What if a bird that was larger than bluehawk swooped down? Bluehawks could take away baby nichelings, but what would a larger bird be able to do? It might be able to take her and Kunuvan. Even with her high strength, Lais wouldn’t be able to fight something like that. As their thoughts were spinning, the two nichelings suddenly heard a rustle within the grasses. Whatever had made the noise gave off an odd scent. It smelled similar to the acorns that fell from the tree, though the smell was a lot stronger. Plus, on top of the nut scent, it gave off a weird stench. Whatever it was, it was definitely not another nicheling or a bearyena. Though her heart was beating quickly, Lais decided to investigate the smell. “Hello?” she called. Was it friendly? There was only one way to find out. At that moment, she spotted a large figure standing in the grass nearby. It seemed to be behind the odd smell. It was taller than both her and Kunuvan, as the top of its head was sticking out. Of course, the figure’s ears were adding to its height. They were big, even larger than those of a big-eared nicheling. Lais padded even closer to it. Now that she had a closer view of it, she could see it more clearly. The ears of the strange figure were green with yellow spots. They also had purple tips. The creature’s fur shared the same green color as its ears along with the yellow spots. She had never seen anything like this. “Hello?” the brown-furred nicheling called again. The green creature’s ears perked up and it turned around to face her. Its face and chest were gray. It let out a low grunt. To Lais, it seemed that it was hostile. She tried to attack the creature, though to her surprise, she barely scratched its skin. Anyways, she definitely made the creature angry. It launched a counterattack, causing Lais to let out a yelp of pain. It did more harm to her than she had done to it. At that moment, the nicheling ran back to Kunuvan. While he hadn’t seen the strange figure, he had smelled it. He had also heard Lais’s yelp. If a creature could put a dent in a nicheling as strong as her, that creature was certainly dangerous. Kunuvan quickly walked up to her and licked her wound. “W-what attacked you?” he asked. “Large creature, spotted, big ears, hostile,” Lais gave her companion a brief description of the animal she had just encountered. Kunuvan and Lais would need to tell their tribe about their journey at the tall tree, however, their news was not positive.

  43. I had recently moved to the Frost Lands island with one of my tribes, and had a bunch of panda babies. Unfortunately the eldest, Seppen, had a horrible incident with a pack of arctic ramfoxes. He had hit one of them, and then, he got mauled by the whole pack. He had managed to take twelve whole days of damage, luckily most of his family had the purr snout, including him, but that experience definitely left him traumatized. When the tribe spilt apart, one half being led by him, I do not think he was very happy when a pack of ramfoxes invaded his territory, and had his brothers take them out.

  44. I believe it's that way to be intentionally annoying, especially since the all rogue males have the derp snout gene. Although I believe the only penalty is that it's ugly and not many (if anyone) likes to use it, lol.

  45. I made a story mode tribe with the intent of getting aaaaaaall the genes possible before finally moseying my way to Adam's Island, it will be the first time I see the "story ending," and with my first save file too! We've cheesed the water genes to easily survive 70% of the islands, survived the jungle long enough to get stinky tail, and survived the swamps enough to get the toxic body, and now we've finally made it to the icy mountains. We managed to struggle the cold winds enough to get Big Body. We've taken down the balance bear, we've survived the sudden snow piles, and we got through our first winter. And with every ancient rock we broke we got a new ancient gene, it was all going so smoothly, we nearly had them all. another few icy island hops and we were golden - and then it'd be off to the promise lands except apparently we've just been lucky with ancient genes you don't get strictly new ones when you break another one open megaloceros antlers were no where to be found, and I had wanted that gene the most and now there were no ports to more mountains. my only option was to go right. I had to send 5 Mountain-Evolved Nichelings to the jungle yeah we got Rekked™ A smelling ape spawned almost immediately, one nicheling got chomped by a carnivorous plant in our rush and we had no time to save him, and by the exit port where I planned on popping out a few once we'd lost that first smelling ape, a second smelling ape decided he'd pay us a visit, and then the first ape caught up to us. We nearly lost our Home immunity and our next tiny island had a few inbreds to get through And here we are at the mountains again. Our only ports are a grass island to the left, and a 5 port jungle to the right. 2 out of 3 ancient rocks have been broken. A nicheling has found last one under the snow. I break it open... Mammoth foot. And I close my game.

  46. The devs actually reached the goal of selling enough copies pretty quickly after Niches full release and they said they'll do another community voting in late 2018 so we'll have at least one update ahead of us (which I am really looking forward too). How Niche will be developed furthermore remains to be seen as they are working on Nimbatus as well and I can imagine they'll focus more on that for a while as it is still in early acess if I recall correctly About DLC I don't mind DLC's if they are worth the money, which is of course hard to determine but that is my point of view. However if there are a lot of DLC that all cost a lot (yes I am looking at you Sims) then I do mind.

  47. I would like to suggest the addition of a new gene slot for lifespan, of which there would be three: short lifespan, medium lifespan, and long lifespan. A nicheling with the short lifespan gene would live for 20 days, a nicheling with the medium lifespan gene would live for 25 days, and a nicheling with the long lifespan gene would live for 30 days. People have expressed a desire for either shorter or longer lifespans, so this solution would please everybody and add an interesting new element to gameplay. Like most genes, it would be selected from the mutation menu to mutate onto a nicheling's offspring, if desired. Perhaps gene dominance would go in the order of: short lifespan > medium lifespan > long lifespan. This would make the long lifespan gene difficult to obtain, but rewarding to keep, because it would increase your tribe's chance of survival. A lifespan gene slot is not my original idea, but I wanted to suggest it again so that the idea is not forgotten.
