  1. Five words: The part where Boss died made me cry. It's kind-of a basic "X surviving in a dystopian world after X happens", but I like those type of books -w- To be fair, I'm more of a manga girl. I'm currently hyped for the fourth volume of two mangas: Splatoon: vol 4, and The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess: vol. 4. (Funny that both books are coming out on the same day! I still need to pre-order them...)

  2. This has been suggested multiple times, but not as a bonus to the double berry paw. The suggestion seems definitely better to me than adding a climbing paw.

  3. I've been wanting and trying to get Bearyena Ears on my main savefile for SO long. Then, on my Whims of Fate save, I finally took a risk and finally got a baby with Bearyena Ears!! He looks like a true cat. (I didn't really care about any of the other genes except Bearyena Ears, so I just bred a female with a Friendly bearyena, waited till their daughter grew up, and bred her with her father. I know, weird, but I just wanted those ears, okay??) On the second island afterwards (I just skipped over a Tiny green in between, so it wasn't that much later), I gave my two breeders Bearyena Ears in their mutations. AND I GOT A LITTLE BEARRR!! (in the picture, the peacock-tailed bear (Little Bear) is his half-brother... whose mother ended up being Bear's mate. Heheh. She's the spiky body one) I named him bear While I was playing, i moved one of my creatures and the resident Bluebird decided to photobomb. I affectionately (even though he ate my precious Little but Strong Bear) dubbed him Bluebird Bear. Here's a picture of the family tree right I took right before Bear died. R.I.P. Bear 😢 I'm so creative with these names. (The ones with game-generated names are not bears)

  4. Or, "I am a wanderer looking for love". "It's within the rights of a guardian to kill all living beings. Even wanderers, rogue." Seriously, why do they approach animals capable of killing them?

  5. I actually taped a piece of paper to the upper part of my screen which I could flip back and forth whenever I opened up the family tree but it soon became to tedious for me so I screwed the blind genes challenge ^^

  6. I trust myself, okay? I put my hand up in front of their genes when I name them/took that screenshot of the family tree. You (or at least I) can tell that I didn't crop it the best because I was trying not to look. I really wish I could look at their genes though because many, many generations ago there was a Nicheling with a really pretty mask and I wanted to know how to recreate it so badly

  7. My absolute all time favourites are Warriors by Erin Hunter and the Anita Blake vampire hunter series by Laurell K. Hamilton. I am also a big fan of the books of Nalini Singh and G.A.Aiken. I love fantasy and sci fy books, preferably with romance. I just love to read

  8. Share all the stuff that happened to your Nichelings while they were in the jungle here! R.I.P.... R.I.P. a female whose father was a rogue-male, a beloved female, and their two rogue-born sons. Oh, look, an Ape and a Rogue Male are here too. Last and not least, Mekoko, the Goddess of Trickery. (She appeared to the same tribe as the one just above) First of all, she appeared to a Nicheling who was inside a carnivorous plant as his relative tried to help get him out. I thought she was trying to save this poor creature at first, but after the next event it looks more like she was helping the plant eat its victim. Eee. Then, as two females who were pregnant with a Rogue Male's children were searching for a safe place away from the carnivorous plants and sickness bugs, Mekoko appeared yet again. The two females followed her, expecting a safe place. They found a place seemingly safe, and had their sons. Later, as these two mothers were swallowed by carnivorous plants and taunted by a Big nosed Ape, they were mistaken. This 'Goddess of Safety', as they called her, was not a Goddess of Safety. She was a Goddess of Trickery. *dun dun DUNNN*

  9. This is poor Dandelionheart a healer who sacrificed herself to pick food in the jungle so that all the Nichelings on the safe heaven could live on. This is said safe heaven Surprisingly enough I don't have that many jungle misadventures, though when you think about the fact that I hate the jungle and avoid going there as much as possible it is not that surprising ^^

  10. I was inspired from the new update, which added wings and peacock tail. The winged nichelings could fly to the tops of the trees, build nests, and gather food before it even fell from the trees. Also, peacock tail nichelings could call from atop these trees in addition to stumps. These features are nice, but felt a little unfair for the more grounded nichelings. It's especially frustrating that you have to rely on outsiders to come in with the wing gene to even be able to fly. That's why I think that the ability to climb trees would be a nice feature to add. You wouldn't even have to add a new gene. I think that 2 nimble fingers would do the job well, since real life animals like monkeys and squirrels live in trees and have fingers. Also, did you know that one hypothesis on the evolution of flight is "from the trees - down"? Some scientists think that before learning how to fly, animals learned to glide. Gliding is advantageous for animals that live in trees, because it allows them to quickly travel from tree to tree without expending a lot of energy. Some real life animals such as flying squirrels and sugar gliders are good examples of that. And archaeopteryx, considered a link between dinosaurs and modern birds, could have also glided from trees. Basically I mean to say that climbing trees can also help unlock wings. Climbing trees -> Gliding -> Flying You wouldn't have to rely on random strangers with wings to wander by your tribe. And if Stray Fawn does decide to add a forest biome... I think climbing would be very useful due to the abundance of trees. (wink wink nudge nudge, stray fawn)

  11. I only recently found out about this game myself. I think the last update was in june or july, and that added new genes like wings and purr snout. This updated version is the only type that I have played. I assume that this update was free. Playing the game, I think it's safe for kids. There's no scummy microtransactions or lootboxes. No DLC that I know of. It's just a one time fee of $18, with i assume free updates every once and a while. The only drawback that I can think of is that it's kind of hard for beginners to grasp. The game doesn't really explain things well, not even in the tutorial mode. I saw a lot of adults complain about that on steam, so it might be hard for kids to learn and survive on the more difficult islands. But we'd be happy to answer any questions on the forums. I'm happy to see more people play this game!

  12. Well if they added something where your nichelings can attack one another, then this could work for rival packs as well. You have your different gem markers and naming so then you could attack the other tribe or any of your own nichelings as well. Though if their strength is obviously lower then the nicheling they want to attack they cant. I don't know. Just thinking.

  13. Okay, it took a while cuz it's my work week and most of my time has been spent at work, but when not at work I played with these sketches So here's my edited art! Tree: Grassland: Savannah: Home Island: Beach: Underwater: Swamp: Jungle: Mountain: Snow: I actually really like this instead of the textured stuff I tried to do before <3 Thanks for helping me!

  14. Okay, I finished the pictures! I know you mentioned you wanted scales like a reptile body, and I tried to edit together some scales for the body, but I personally had some difficulties, so I've got one picture with the scales and all the rest just have a 'rough' texture to them. Hope you don't mind! I also added in a 'tree' version, and I tried to make it look like mostly leaves with some blue mixed in like seeing the sky through the leaves. Not sure how well it went, but I tried lol Scales: Tree: Grassland: Savannah: Home Island: Beach: Underwater: Swamp: Jungle: Mountain: Snow: Just a note: The body I drew is sleek and kinda bean-shaped because I noticed that, when a chameleon is 'sitting up' or stretching toward something, it's actually kinda thin, whereas in most of the pictures you see on google, they're sitting down on all fours and look hunch-backed and chubby. Since Nichelings are sitting up, I went with a thinner look

  15. so i was thinking what if nichelings with around 4+ digging can dig burrows to protect baby nichelings from the blue bird and maby add a bit of camouflage. the burrrow takes 5 nesting material to build and will collapse after 7 *days and the nicheling inside will have to be dug out. every day the nicheling is inside the collapesed burrow they will take 1 day of damage, after 5 *days the burrow will begin to fall apart and you can fix it by using 2 nesting material. Edit: I changed turns to days ( that's what i originaly ment)

  16. It happens that a mother leaves behind an identical daughter on her last day. Some take their legacy very seriously, however. What's your clone story? These were left behind berry collectors. Born from wanderers, not the main branch, but quite healthy.

  17. Hi there, since i bought the game after seeing it on my favorite youtubers channel (thanks Seri!), I am trying to visit all islands to get the achievement. But over the weeks and months i lost track.... My suggestion: Whale-Island is out and you can choose which Island to travel to. Wouldn't it be great if it actually shows you, which Islands you already visited? And when you land on a "new" island, there is a notification saying: "This island looks familiar. Your ancestors tell stories about it as long as you can remember" or "This island looks completely new! What adventures may await you here?" Greetings, Kaga87

  18. I think it would be awesome to have the option to toggle the genes on and off so that we can play a "blind genes mode" in which we can't look at the genes our nichelings are carrying, to make the game more interesting and challenging. That way we could look at the family tree and change nichelings' names without having to look at the genes. It could also be activated or deactivated during the game, that way, for example, you could set yourself a goal and once you reach it you can toggle on the genes and look at them. What do you think?

  19. Hello all, I am new here.... and thanks in advance for any help. My kids are very interested in Niche from videos they have seen (I assume they stumbled on them from Youtube), but I was hoping for your help as I am very clueless on games these days and couldn't immediately find a definitive answer around. First, on the cost. Is Niche at $17.99 a one-time purchase? Are there regular recurring fees of any sort, and/or payments for upgrades, new releases, etc? Is the Steam app on desktop the usual way to do it? Also, my kids are 7 and 9 years old -- is that too young? From what I could tell, the game is as complicated or simple as you want to make it, and they certainly understand the concept of evolution, genes, etc. It looks fun for that age, but I wanted to check. Any other tips would be greatly appreciated, on the game and also any words of wisdom for parents of younger players. Thank you for your words of wisdom, Tim

  22. This sounds really interesting! Maybe it can work somehow like the stickers in steam? You have a nicheling you find gorgeous and can post it as picture on a market-forum. If someone is interested in it and has an offering you are interested in (again only seeing the picture), both accept and only then the code is shown. You can copy that code in your file and if you are lucky, you unlock the nicheling as random birth-mutation.

  23. I think your kids will be OK playing this game. I have been playing only for a week or so and I think it's fine, even great, for kids. There is of course death in this game, and 'rogue males,' creatures with bad genetics which try to get your female animals pregnant. But none of it is 'realistic' or intimate at all. I am still a teen and my twelve year old sister plays too. My four year old sister enjoys watching us play sometimes, and I would not allow that if I did not think the game was suitable for kids. She is too young to play as she doesn't understand the mechanics or genetics at all, but I think seven and nine, especially if they understand genetics, are good ages if they can understand how to play. I agree with @Wander that it can be difficult to understand the tutorial. I had been watching youtube videos of it before so I mostly understood how the game worked, and knew a lot more tips and tricks on how to play. I recommend your kids watch some video tutorials on youtube if they haven't already. Though I don't think they have any videos directly telling you how to play the game, there are several 'let's play' kid-friendly Niche youtubers like Jessimew and Seri! Pixel Biologist! That can help show them some tips like what healing plants are, and how to hunt for food. I watched Seri before getting the game and I feel much more prepared then I would have. I believe it is a one time fee. Though I got mine for free from one of the forum moderators. They sometimes will have steam key giveaways here on the forums, which are basically codes that you can enter to get a free niche. Around 20-30 people enter and there are usually 3 winners.

  24. I don’t think we would really need to change mechanics too much, maybe just add the listening action to near-sighted nichlings. However the main focus is making it so blind nichlings can move and survive on their own.

  26. You just said you can't tell what their genes are because it's a whims of fate challenge, but then you told the genes.... =/ Also, could you imagine if your name was Strong Bear. Then one day someone named Stronger bear came up and was like, I'm exactly like you except better in every way! Reminds me of Friend bear and Best friend bear from the care bear series. Like you just tryin to 1-up them all the time? What a prick. Makes me feel bad for Strong Bear, so I pick her as the leader.

  29. The medium one can also spawn with an ape tree which can spawn an ape (I absolutely hate it when that happens). As said above it also has bugs in swamp tiles when it rains. I also am 99% sure that it has more bearyena spawns and less food. Not sure about the rogue males. Sometimes the landscape looks a little steeper as well but that might just be my imagination

  30. Good idea! Winged nichelings should rely on mostly on flight for getting places, so low speed +1. I think +1 would be better than +0 because if the nicheling did not have wings, it would not be able to move. +4 strength sounds OP. But I do agree that birds need more strength, because right now they're relying on horns, body type, and bearyena legs. And body type can lower your ability to fly. I love the idea of adding fishing ability to talons the most! Right now in order to get the bird to eat fish, they need a fishing tail. I wanted my bird tribe to have bird traits (peacock tail), so it's kind of lame that they have to sacrifice that ability to gather food. Plus if you wanted to double up on fishing traits, you could have both talons and fishing tail to catch razoranhas. +1 speed, +1 strength, +2 fishing?

  33. Also pack, I could really use your help here! These are the genes requires to unlock the racoon achievement: If you can breed an animal that looks like it SHOULD get you the racoon achievement but has different genes, please post a screenshot here + a written list of what kind of pattern / fur color genes it has. That would be great! If we find some new combinations, we can allow them to also unlock the achievement.

  34. I don't think Sharkidile hybrids make much sense, but I like the rest of this suggestion! However, a Sharkidile snout that could be unlocked through, let's say, killing fifteen Sharkidiles, could have Fishing, because as of now there are no heads in the game that give Fishing, and it would make it more unique and desirable for that very reason.
    1 point
  35. I agree! And I love your bettabass! It could be like a beta fish and be really fierce. But Idisagreein the sharkidile hybrid part. Bearyenas are related to nichelings and it makes sense they can breed, but even with how weird and wonderfl niche can be, I think a nicheling breeding with a sharkidile is kind of weird. But maybe there could be a seal- like predator related to the nichelings! In that case, aquatic hybrids would be really cool!

  36. I agree that the underwater world could be much more interesting. Another idea could be rainbow-colored coral reefs! Maybe you could dig for food or have a higher chance of finding food there, like crabs, shells, and fish, or even nesting material. It would also be nice to look at. You could also get a chance of getting poisoned or stung since reefs have some dangers (sea anemones, sea urchins, some species of fish- I am definitely in agreement that there should be more water species). The reef could be decayed with more and more digging just like how berry bushes or trees become barren, but it could respawn after a certain amount of days, too (like 10).

  37. What if They actually had like if you clicked on them a status effect like An exclamation mark on a scared Bearyena and if you click on it, it says "This Bearyena seems scared" Or a like meat symbol and it says "This Bearyena seems skinny" Or something?! Idk I think thatd be cool!

  38. Perhaps it could also provide cold resistance to baby nichlings in the mountains and heat resistance to them in the savvanah(because the burrow is protecting them from the elements)?
    1 point
  39. Good idea, but what if it lasted longer? Just 7 turns seems too.. sad? If you have a big pack, you're just wasting a bunch of nesting material to keep it up for a baby to be in or something. Maybe it takes 10 nesting material and lasts for two days, before it begins to crumble after five turns on the third day, making an alert like, "A burrow is collasping!" and after 3 more turns it fully collaspes. And if you don't have a big pack, it just immediately collaspes on the end of the 3rd day. Edit: Oof they changed it Okay xD

  41. I suggest: If creature doesn't have double wings: +1 Speed +1 Attack +1 Swimming If creature has double wings: +2 Fishing +2 Attack In this way, it acts just like Bearyena Hindlegs on a land creature, but if they have double Wings, then it's a lot better!
    1 point
  42. maybe instead of strength, it has something called seize, and this has a 25% or 50% chance to cause stun on the target when the fly and attack is used bird talons 1 speed 1 swimming' seize(25% or 50% chance to stun target for a day when fly and attack is used) 2 fishing with two wings maybe 2 seizing strength(fly and attack damage) with 2 wings maybe edit: thanks lilytuft, I repurposed this from owlparrot genes and why has noone came up with this? I mean talons are not just meant to inflict damage, they are meant to SEIZE and grab prey to prevent them from escaping the bird's grasp, for example, if your nicheling isn't strong enough to kill a walrus deer easily, then your nicheling can stun it and kill it when it is unable to escape or fight back, or it can be used against particularily powerful predators like for example apes to disable them for a bit I imagine talons as the sleeker alternative to bearyena claws, that enable you to disable prey and catch fish, while bearyena hindlegs enable MORE DAMAGE

  48. @MysticTopaz They look awesome but a bit too textured for ingame I think but as fanart/concept art they are great! and I didn't mean for them to be covered in scales all over, just a hint of scales at the breast like the strands of fur we get on normal body without having it everywhere, the rest would be filled out by imagination ^^ and for the leaf/sky one, I like it but again, it is too textured for ingame I think, ingame they are all solid colored. so maybe the sky blue could be the overwrite color for the pattern? I made an example how a spotted one would then look when sitting on a tree, but very simplistic whithout texture, just color and outlines as we get ingame
    1 point
  49. Yeah, that makes sense I guess. One speed would be important. I definitely feel like they shouldn't have more than three stats on them though. With all the other hindlegs only have 3 stats on them, having four on one specific feels too strong.

  50. Is it possible to mod Niche, or will it be made available later? I've played the game for around 40 hrs now, and I've got a couple suggestions on making some improvements. Nicheling selection! There doesn't seem to be a way to select Nichelings in-game other than clicking on them? This could be added to the family tree, or (my preference) a separate panel could be added. Clicking on the 'Animals' wedge could open/close it. You could sort them by name, gender, age. There could be toggles to add in other information that the player wishes to sort by, to keep the panel size to a manageable size. Trying to find a single Nicheling amongst the 25 that I currently have is a giant pain! Selection box around Nichelings hex - to make it more obvious which one is selected. In-game notes. Toggleable names above Nichelings heads - or even showing the name when hovering over a nicheling. I'm not sure why the Nichelings left behind on an island have to die. Couldn't they just 'go feral' or something? I know it's just a wording difference, but still. I wouldn't feel awful every time I leave an island =( Notifications need significant improvement. When a gene is unlocked, it would be nice to know WHICH gene it was. Including the name of the dead animal in the notification would be helpful. Or possibly make the corpse selectable, so the name can be seen that way? Notifications that an animal is sick seems to come up every round, instead of when they are born/acquire a new disease. Auto-selecting a baby when 'show me' is clicked on the newborn notification would be useful. Being able to close the Skills/Genes/Mutations panels. A toggle to deactivate breeding a particular animal. Those are all things that would improve the basic game, without really altering the game itself. The suggestions below would be fun to see but would be pretty large departures from the game in its current implementation. Separate tribes when you leave an island. Instead of the nichelings leaving your control, they just form a separate tribe and the two (or more!) tribes continue to evolve independently. The food/nest material would be tracked per tribe. I think in order for this to work some form of automation would have to be added. You could select specific niechlings or tribes to 'go feral' and they would then fend for themselves. The player could go back and look at previous tribes, to see how they've developed. Nutrition - right now all nichelings seem to be omnivores? Even omnivores need varied diets, though! There could be hunger/starvation added in if they aren't eating food from multiple categories often enough. Different categories would include berries, nuts, fish, and...pond floor food? Worms? I'm not sure what they eat there.
