The dumbest thing I did...probably went way overboard with breeding a male bird beaked son of a wanderer with Tons of females because I wanted beak. I bred to tons of females, including a bearyena snout female. Only two beaked babies came out of it. Both were infertile. Gahhh! fortunately I quit doing that because I had started a whale island save that was doing much better in the beak and wings department lol so that’s how I turned my first save into a suffering tribe in the grass adventure island with about 25 members and less than 100 food. (It used to be forty members, same amount of food, but I realized that was too many and banished half my tribe.)4 points

I can't recall anything particularly dumb that I did before... I think the dumbest thing I did was back in the snow biome update. I blazed through the starter island without preparing ahead of time and then died in the snow biome the next day 😅 (During this, I got the weird screenshot of the "hairy guy in a hot tub staring at my crippled son"...)4 points

I started playing a roleplay challenge where after three generations, one of the nichelings declares themself the "alpha", or dictator of the tribe. In my first challenge save, I was sticking exactly to the rules of the "Utopia" challenge, where after three generations, rejected nichelings get drowned in the ocean, and this includes wanderers. In that save, I played it on Tiny Green because it's difficult to escape, and had my rejects hide in a patch of tall grass near a whale island port that was never cleared. Here's the dumb part: On that first save file, one of the nichelings got an idea: have the rejects secretly breed with each other to produce children that are acceptable, and then send the children into the main tribe as "wanderers". The "wanderers" would add to the gene pool, and spread their agenda of resisting the dictatorship. That sounds good on paper until you realize that the traits that could get a nicheling rejected include bad paw, bad eyesight/blindness, derp nose, and gene combinations that render a nicheling useless. (That last one is a judgement call.) Here's the even dumber part: That idea actually worked. Within a few generations, there was no point to having the secret tribe anymore because one member was getting old and the other was technically acceptable but chose to hold off because she looked too similar to her sister. By that point, the main tribe disliked the current dictator for being petty and irresponsible, so they revealed themselves and kicked out the dictator.3 points

The dumbest thing I did was way back when the jungle update came out to head straight there and almost die because of the apes ^^ Now I guess just following the rough rules of my warrior cats challenge (babies have to be born close to each other, new warriors have to be named close to the leader, same goes for apprentices)3 points

I'd be lying if I were to claim that it doesn't benefit me in any way, but it has become a strange little ritual. If a wandering female appears, I let her mate with the strongest male. She then searches for a perfect nesting spot, and, if she is lucky, will have a child there. Her strenght and appearance don't matter. Unless his eyesight isn't full or she has the no paw, she won't get anything to mutate. It's her line. What doesn't really benefit me, though, is continuing that line at times. That can really go on when they just have great match ups. Mom Gen 1 and son. Mom 2 was another wanderer. Gen 3. There are a lot of bushes and a tree here, plus, no bugs. I don't have pictures of other lines, sadly. I suppose it is a tradition in the name of Mythal, though there are exceptions. It's of no use in the jungle or in cold biomes if both are going to freeze to death if not slaughtered. Males are only chosen... if they are pretty. Is this reverse sexism? Exceptions are made when they serve a purpose One way to get water genes. Or when I am desperate and playing blind genes. Pretty children, tough. Luckily neither passed on the no paw. I think he had two novel immunity genes and the big ears. His grandson got a harem. He was the only male born and the creature limit raised to 19. The bearyena ears happened during a generic bottleneck. I am guessing they all have them in some way. The dumb thing I do is risk taking. It pays off so well tough, at times. The whims didn't starve with that scorpion tail. Even if three no paw derpsnouts were bred for it and that water line consisted of him banging his own daughter.3 points

I was watching my sister play on the save file I let her have. I watched as she placed all of her nichelings around her favorite one on her last day alive while singing a mournful song. Wasted pretty much the whole days worth of turns. I told her this but apparently she thinks this is more important now I am curious. Do you do anything that doesn’t benefit you in any way?2 points

Hi there, since i bought the game after seeing it on my favorite youtubers channel (thanks Seri!), I am trying to visit all islands to get the achievement. But over the weeks and months i lost track.... My suggestion: Whale-Island is out and you can choose which Island to travel to. Wouldn't it be great if it actually shows you, which Islands you already visited? And when you land on a "new" island, there is a notification saying: "This island looks familiar. Your ancestors tell stories about it as long as you can remember" or "This island looks completely new! What adventures may await you here?" Greetings, Kaga872 points

I would think that heterochromia would be like albinism and melanism. There would be a gene to have it or not have it. You need to have both genes in order to make heterochromia appear. After you have both genes, instead of turning your niche white or black it changes the eye colors. The eye colors depend on what 2 eye color genes you already have.2 points

Share all the stuff that happened to your Nichelings while they were in the jungle here! R.I.P.... R.I.P. a female whose father was a rogue-male, a beloved female, and their two rogue-born sons. Oh, look, an Ape and a Rogue Male are here too. Last and not least, Mekoko, the Goddess of Trickery. (She appeared to the same tribe as the one just above) First of all, she appeared to a Nicheling who was inside a carnivorous plant as his relative tried to help get him out. I thought she was trying to save this poor creature at first, but after the next event it looks more like she was helping the plant eat its victim. Eee. Then, as two females who were pregnant with a Rogue Male's children were searching for a safe place away from the carnivorous plants and sickness bugs, Mekoko appeared yet again. The two females followed her, expecting a safe place. They found a place seemingly safe, and had their sons. Later, as these two mothers were swallowed by carnivorous plants and taunted by a Big nosed Ape, they were mistaken. This 'Goddess of Safety', as they called her, was not a Goddess of Safety. She was a Goddess of Trickery. *dun dun DUNNN*2 points

So.. my precious Bear died, leaving his tribe leaderless. But I can't decide who I want to be leader! So, I'm doing a poll! (Note: This tribe is a Whims of Fate challenge, so I can't show their genes.) Chose between... Strong Bear, daughter of Bear. Strong Bear's Pros: -Prettier -Female -Better Fertility -May have recessive Poison Fangs (Which I've been trying to keep alive for generations) -Better Fishing Ability Strong Bear's Cons: -Weaker than Stronger Bear -Day older than Stronger Bear (I guess it doesn't matter that much) -Probably has bad recessive eyesight (mother was a wanderer) -Might have Webbed Hind-legs recessive (mother was a wanderer) -Might have an unwanted recessive body gene (mother was a wanderer + Lean Body has been running around in the family and some of her siblings have it) -Has black eyes (which I don't like) Strong Bear's Mutations: Purr Snout (Randomly Chosen) and Ram Horns (what I chose) Or Stronger Bear, son of Little Bear. Stronger Bear's Pros: -Stronger than Strong Bear (hence the name) -Day younger than Strong Bear -Since his father has active Peacock Tail, he most likely has it recessive. A few of his sisters have it active, too. -Could pass on that Bearyena Claw -Will inherit a tree stump next to a tree + a Healing Fruit (once it grows back...) -Pretty Blue eyes Stronger Bear's Cons: -Has 1 Infertile gene (I know this because of the way his parent's fertility stats are both 5, which can only be 3 + 2, and his father got Infertility as is randomly chosen gene. -Has a low chance of having recessive bad eyesight (grandmother was a wanderer) -Has a low chance of having Webbed Hindlegs recessive (grandmother was a wanderer) -Possibly has recessive Lean Body or another unwanted body gene (His grandmother was a wanderer + Lean Body has been running around in the family) Stronger Bear's Mutations: Mask (Randomly chosen) and High Fertility (What I chose)1 point

(This was supposed to be posted a week or 2 ago, but it kept showing me a 404 message) So, I made a new savefile on an Oasis island. I thought it was cool how there was purple water (It IS supposed to be purple, right..?). Then I exited to the main menu and went to my other tribe that is currently on a large grass island. And for some reason, the water was purple.1 point

Alright, so I've seen some suggests asking for some type of creature creator/demo mode or whatever. I have been working on this for a while and I thought I'd make a new post since there's a lot more than just "A demo mode". This is gonna be mostly made up of pictures from what I call "Tutorial Mode" and I'll leave a link to a page with pictures without the text from tutorial mode. So first you can access this mode from the home screen like so: And then you would start at the creature creator (and to turn on tutorial mode you do this first (tutorial mode can be either be functional just with the yellow text or an example that goes away after you click)): Which can take you to either the creature list or the select mate screens which look like (also note that the scroll on the right on all screens is not accurate, and is just there to display its existence): (Where you can import creatures from save files like this: ) And confirming a breed brings you to the offspring list which is: Where there are trait statistics and custom filters (list of traits made by @Aysling here: https://strayfawnstudio.com/community/index.php?/topic/626-nicheling-sort-filter-and-select/&page=0#comment-2030) : Or you can go to the punnett square: And from anything outside of the creature lists, you can go to the gem colors (which you can find individually here: https://strayfawnstudio.com/community/index.php?/topic/646-customizable-and-programmable-gem-colors/) And the color cycle looks like this: And after all of that, you could use the creatures you used to start in sandbox mode like this: (Picture in production) So yea, that's all of it. Please let me know of any mistakes I might have made since this was a lot or of any logical inconsistencies. If you want to see the pictures without the text from tutorial mode, you can go to this link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/16dVKParfTHqHpSsuPD_UA_6cozEJ94_4Wtxpff6lIsE/edit?usp=sharing1 point

I've been wanting and trying to get Bearyena Ears on my main savefile for SO long. Then, on my Whims of Fate save, I finally took a risk and finally got a baby with Bearyena Ears!! He looks like a true cat. (I didn't really care about any of the other genes except Bearyena Ears, so I just bred a female with a Friendly bearyena, waited till their daughter grew up, and bred her with her father. I know, weird, but I just wanted those ears, okay??) On the second island afterwards (I just skipped over a Tiny green in between, so it wasn't that much later), I gave my two breeders Bearyena Ears in their mutations. AND I GOT A LITTLE BEARRR!! (in the picture, the peacock-tailed bear (Little Bear) is his half-brother... whose mother ended up being Bear's mate. Heheh. She's the spiky body one) I named him bear While I was playing, i moved one of my creatures and the resident Bluebird decided to photobomb. I affectionately (even though he ate my precious Little but Strong Bear) dubbed him Bluebird Bear. Here's a picture of the family tree right I took right before Bear died. R.I.P. Bear 😢 I'm so creative with these names. (The ones with game-generated names are not bears)1 point

While responding to a comment from Goggles-Kun, I came to a realization. There is a good reason while there may never be mods in niche. If we consider it, people could make a lot of horrible things, like turning predators into levitating organs, including certain traumatizing diseases, altering some genes so they look more... realistic, and even turning the heads of every creature into purr snout heads to stare into our souls, and make hordes of rogue purr snouts spawn and stare even more. And anyone could install these mods. Also modding could make some less interested in the updates.1 point

I hope one day I can hack into Niche and make that happen 😆 > Goggles-kun has been kicked from the forums.1 point

What ChasingNyx said But I'll say it in a bit more detail. It is, as they said, a Blind Genes challenge, so you can't look at your creatures genes. Once you start, choose one of your two creatures to be leader. You don't have to have them really lead if you don't want them to, but for as long as that Nicheling lives, your tribe may only have a set amount of creatures in it. The number will be 2-20, the exact number will be determined by a random generator (Dice, Online Random Number Generator, etc). Everytime your leader died, you have to choose a new one, and generate a new tribe size number. Whenever you want to breed your creatures, you need to set their mutations. One of them is set by a random generator (use the one that ChasingNyx linked), and the other can be whatever you want. This is quite fun, as sometimes it might give your really perfect creatures Infertility (That's what happened to me), or it might make matters worse and give you short-sighted creature Blind Eyes (Happened to me too..), or it might actually be helpful and give your creature High Fertility when it really needs it (Happened to me as well!). Right before I looked at your post I was playing on my Whims of Fate challenge1 point

It's a Niche series by Seri Pixel Biologist. It is a blind genes and random generator challenge, where as Wander said you can have 2-20 nichelings determined by a random generator. You choose a leader each time the previous leader dies, but they don't hve to actually lead n' stuff. When you choose a new leader it determines the amount of nichelings you can have. When you assign mutations, one is decided by a random generator, or 'Niche gods' if you want to get roleplay-ie, wether it be numbers or a thing a fan of Seri made on Scratch. Here's that- https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/214535915/ That's about it!1 point

If your kids have watched videos of it then they will probably understand it well. The only problem is that some islands may be a bit difficult for a seven year old, but It surely wont matter on the long run. Well, they may be jump scared by apes in the jungle levels... Just kidding. The apes look quite funny.1 point

I actually taped a piece of paper to the upper part of my screen which I could flip back and forth whenever I opened up the family tree but it soon became to tedious for me so I screwed the blind genes challenge ^^1 point

So far all the updates to the game have been for free and as Wander said there are no lootboxes or microtransactions. The developers also have not said that the new update coming in early 2019 will cost something. The game is in a finished state as of now and playable even without future updates I think all the parts about Kidfriendly are very well answered above. Nothing is to intimate or graphic in Niche and when the children understand the genetics and strategy aspect of the game and enjoy it they'll probably love Niche1 point

This is poor Dandelionheart a healer who sacrificed herself to pick food in the jungle so that all the Nichelings on the safe heaven could live on. This is said safe heaven Surprisingly enough I don't have that many jungle misadventures, though when you think about the fact that I hate the jungle and avoid going there as much as possible it is not that surprising ^^1 point

The bat wings will be included as well You can make your ideas into seperate posts and post them in the feature request if you want people to vote on it for them to be possibly added. Also I like the idea of simple genetics added that don't do much but just be there (I imagine it would be like that a lot if we could mod Niche )1 point

I think your kids will be OK playing this game. I have been playing only for a week or so and I think it's fine, even great, for kids. There is of course death in this game, and 'rogue males,' creatures with bad genetics which try to get your female animals pregnant. But none of it is 'realistic' or intimate at all. I am still a teen and my twelve year old sister plays too. My four year old sister enjoys watching us play sometimes, and I would not allow that if I did not think the game was suitable for kids. She is too young to play as she doesn't understand the mechanics or genetics at all, but I think seven and nine, especially if they understand genetics, are good ages if they can understand how to play. I agree with @Wander that it can be difficult to understand the tutorial. I had been watching youtube videos of it before so I mostly understood how the game worked, and knew a lot more tips and tricks on how to play. I recommend your kids watch some video tutorials on youtube if they haven't already. Though I don't think they have any videos directly telling you how to play the game, there are several 'let's play' kid-friendly Niche youtubers like Jessimew and Seri! Pixel Biologist! That can help show them some tips like what healing plants are, and how to hunt for food. I watched Seri before getting the game and I feel much more prepared then I would have. I believe it is a one time fee. Though I got mine for free from one of the forum moderators. They sometimes will have steam key giveaways here on the forums, which are basically codes that you can enter to get a free niche. Around 20-30 people enter and there are usually 3 winners.1 point

I think this would require a specific gene. There are MANY types of venom, and the venom from poison fangs is one that only causes damage over time. There could be a different variant of poison fangs with paralyzing venom.1 point

A long, distant cousin family to Adam's tribe wandered off. One of those such nichelings was Nunukir. He was double digger pawed, and had webbed hindlegs, and as such the female nicheling he had been stuck with, Raanala, a one digger pawed one runner pawed nicheling scoffed at the idea of having cubs with him. But, as they grew she eventually accepted there was little hope she'd find anyone else. So, she soon bred with Nunukir and had their first child, Anaanako. She was also double digger pawed, and Raanala growled in frustration. "Our children our doomed because of your stupid paws and legs!" She growled at her mate. "It's not my fault I was born like this! Please, Raa, let's just have one more cub. I'm sure this time will be different." He soothed. "Lies!" She spat. "I won't condemn anymore to being as useless as you or I!" She then trudged off to pick some berries with her one good paw. Nunukir sighed and trudged off, wading into the sandy shores of the and cracking open a clam in the waters. However, both nichelings had found creatures who would change their lives. Forever. Nunukir found a wandering nicheling with lean body and peacock tail, Resi. He immediately fell hard. Resi was kind, understanding, and didn't seem to care that Nunukir was horrible at being on land, or that all he could do was dig for roots and crack open clam shells. She also had her issues, like being shortsighed and partically incapable of baring cubs. However though, after some time of getting to know each other, the two set off together and had a child, Kirkuvan. He had nimble fingers, which made Nunukir overjoyed. Sure, he didn't have the dramatic and frilly tail of males of Resi's tribe that she had talked about, but they loved him none the less. Now back to Raanala... She had found a wandering male, who was the epitome of beauty in her eyes. Tanuro, a big bodied and antlered male. He was picking berries with his one good paw, as he was like Raanala, and had one digger paw and one runner's leg. Now, for her, the epitome of beauty was big bodied, strong, and poison fanged. While he did not meet the poison fanged part, he met everything else in her eyes and they fell in love, having a daughter that Raanala thought was the sure sign she had found her true soul mate. Rela. She was strong and poison fanged, and striped gorgeously. She loved her daughter on sight, and immediately began to have more and more children with Tanuro, until he died. He died peacefully, as he was older than Raanala by quite a few years. They had four sons, Kukirnu, Dukduk, Dukvan, and the youngest, Kirnuduk. Raanala loved her children, especially Kirnuduk, as she imagined a great future for him espeically. However, none bore the beautiful big body either of former mates had, which did make her a little sad. But, she loved them none the less. Meanwhile, Raa's first daughter, Anaanako, was wandering alone in the grasses to find roots for her mother. She was sad her father had left, and that she had no full siblings, but she understood that she should still provide for her family none the less. After all, they were a growing tribe and she could dig better than anyone else. However, soon a loud, threatening growl came from the grasses. Her ears pricked and she looked behind her, eyes wide in shock as she spotted a bearyena. As her half siblings ram to get their older siblings to help fight, she guarded their escape by throwing herself at the beast and ramming her small frame into it. However, it didn't help, and she got severely wounded and bitten. Soon though, her brothers came to her aid and slayed the bearyena, licking her wounds without a thank you and wanderng off with the meat. They didn't even give her any. She sighed and smiled, knowing she had protected them. Not too far away, Resi let out a wail before sighing in relief as her second, and final child was born. Issi. She smiled weakly and licked her child, nuzzling her before soon passing, curled around her one and only daughter. She had been too old to bare the birth, and had died. The small cub curled up to her side and soon her, unknown to all of them, half brothers came and found her. They hauled her from her nest and took her in. All were enamored with her, every single one of the tribe. Except for Rela. Rela was glaring at the young cub, seeing the way her brothers eyed up the nicheling with awe and envy. "You're all fools." She scoffed at them. Kukirnu blinked and looked up at her. "And why's that Ree?" He asked, tilting his head. "You're all so enamored with that.. thing. It's disgusting. She's disgusting. Honestly, can you not tell what true beauty is, you fools?" She growled, pointing her heart shaped nose to the sky "Oh, so we're supposed to be in love with you?" Dukvan laughed. "No way. You're our sister and while we love you, it ain't in that way." The other three chorused in agreement. "Plus, what's gotten into you?" Dukduk asked, seeming confused at her hostility. All four brothers were aware she was proud of her looks, but even this was odd for the normally caring and kind Rela. She scoffed. "Nothing. It's just it's weird to see you all enamored over something so ugly." She hmphed. "One day, you'll all realize it was a horrible deicison to bring her into the tribe." She turned and santured off, still acting all high and mighty. However once she reached the grasses, she turned and glared at the small cub recieving so much affection. "Just you wait, brothers. You'll regret ever finding her in those grasses." She growled, her brown eyes gleaming with rage and hatred before she stalked off, her striped tail rustling the grasses before it all went still. The End! Should I make a sequel~?1 point

Peaceful herbivore challenge: You cant attack any other animal, including rogue males. You can only run and breed in the best genes to deter predators. Lions of the skies challenge: You must have a tribe of mostly males and only one or two permanent females. You release females when they are two gemmed and the males have to find them to mate when the become adults. Then, they can mate 1 to 3 times before the female is released again. Your goal is to unlock all bird genes. Peackock tail will aid you in mating songs for the females and wings will help you search for them if they are not attracted. Males get a better rank depending on their strength, beauty, leadership and how many females they have attracted. As a bonus, if you are in a snowy island you could have a set breeding season in a set breeding ground. For example, when it snows, the males call the females and bring them to the breeding ground so they can keep warm and start families, and when the snow stops, the females are released again to continue their solitary and adventurous lives.1 point
