3. This was prompted with this image, and the phrase: "Um, no. How about we don’t, and say we did…" This was one of the rare stories that wrote itself. I actually wasn't thinking about making it funny when I wrote it, and was surprised when I was told it was hilarious. Artwork by Tomislav Jagnjic (ArtStation) Retirement Plans I stared up at the living mountain before us. We rode atop a ridge, and we could look at the spiral emblem on its ‘face’ without craning our necks too far. When we got close, we’d have to climb its body just to attack the top of its toe. “So . . . that’s the thing, huh?” Jamon looked on with me, nodding once. “Yup.” Looked down at my hands gripping the reins, I noticed the lines in the skin. My sword and armor were clean and well-maintained, but my body would soon begin to rust. No man could fight forever. “And, what was he offering us again?” “Glory. And a princess each.” “Glory.” He nodded once more. “And a princess.” I took a crossbow bolt out of the quiver hanging from my saddle, examining the point. It was made to pierce plate mail, but rock? And even if it penetrated that stone hide completely, I’d barely be giving it a splinter. “Hey, Jamon. Those princesses. You think they were pretty?” He was quiet for a moment, then he shrugged. “They were okay, as princesses go.” “The woman watching the stables for her older brother. She had eyes for you, you know.” Jamon nodded and smiled at the recollection. “She was prettier.” “I bet I could make headway with Tara. The woman handling the money at the inn.” At that, Jamon looked at me like I had grown a third head. “She told you she’d smack the gray out of your hair.” “She meant it affectionately. She was just laying out the ground rules of our relationship.” “She was telling you that you’d get smacked.” “I think I have a better chance with her than I have with that walking mountain.” Jamon just nodded once more. Not even a monosyllable. “You know, the town needed guardsmen.” We both just stared at this monstrosity prowling the valley. Nobody lived there. Who would want to? It didn’t do anything but prowl the rocky valley, eating the natural granite. The land wouldn’t even be useful as farmland. “You know, I’m hungry. Maybe we should make sure we do this on a full stomach. Tomorrow. Or next week. Or in ten years.” “You wanted to retire in two.” “I’m pretty sure I can find a way to reconcile those two intentions. Come on. Let’s see if Tara has any more insults to hurl at me while we eat. I bet you can get the girl at the stables–” “Brinn.” I blinked, unaccustomed to interjections from Jamon. She must have made an impression on him. “Brinn. I bet you can get her to share a table, maybe more.” “Ten Imperials.” “What? That’s no kind of bet. Tara’s a tougher customer. She’s going to take time and care. Brinn already has eyes for you. You could probably just wiggle your brows and–” “Twenty.” “Fine. Twenty.” I pulled on the reins, turning my mount back toward town, and Jamon followed along with me. As I rode, I considered the idea of retiring to a quiet life with a spirited woman, and I made my peace with losing that bet.

 5. Gyaar! I thought it might be fun to create a thread for us to share our current projects with our fellow engineers. Here, we have a great deal more room to discuss our gear at length than we do in the workshop. So post your best/worst/fondest projects so the community can learn, critique, and help you improve! With that, I humbly submit my current flagship for your viewing pleasure: Features: -Automatic terrain avoidance -Full shield coverage -speed, Agility, and high stability. -8 automated defense turrets capable of dropping multiple tough enemies at full throttle when weapon fire is most inaccurate -16 long range fire support batteries -Fuel and energy reserves for extended engagements -Surprisingly effective digging -Hover mode -On board fighter bay with replenishing fighters -Automated Fighter launch sequence and bay doors. -Orbital Fire support mode X -Printed on demand "no frills" dedicated high capacity mining and recovery drone -Logic blocks remain with the docking drone for increased ship space The top photo features a hanger I've been working on, but it's looking like cpu performance may be an issue for now. I left the drone core in the ship so I'd eventually have the option to program the fighter to return and dock automatically. If I don't get around to it, I'll probably detach it into the ore box and automate the mining drone. Let me know what you think! I'm open to questions, critiques, and whatnot, such as how the turrets work. Till then!

 6. Once upon a time, last year, I felt genuine spite for the Apes, so much so that I wanted a monster that could prey upon EVERYTHING... "One thing I can lament, though: I've wanted a spider-something predator, not to mate with, but to have as a big scary thing. I imagined two of the giant trees in the jungle about three hexagons apart, and in those three hexagons of space between the trees there connects a giant web. Trying to move through the space between the trees results in your nicheling getting stuck in the web. If it has a high strength, it can break itself free, but if not- I'll get to that in a second. Here's the thing: the giant spider monster wouldn't differentiate between nichelings and carnivores, so bearyenas and apes could get stuck in the web, too, and as far as I know none of them have strengths above 5 points. Thus, when the day is passed, the spider descends from the trees, getting closer and closer to whatever is stuck in the web. Once there, it will spin the web even further, making it impossible for even nichelings of 12 strength to break free, where it will then poison its prey and sit there, waiting for it to die. In the case of bearyenas and apes, as soon as the carnivore dies the meat it drops is picked up by the spider, so you don't get a chance to rush in and steal the kill. The spider wouldn't come down off the web because it'd be far too big, taking up a ring of six hexagons with its size. Thing is, I wanted it to be cute; something that, even though it's basically an even more unbeatable beast than the apes, more akin to a carnivorous plant in gameplay, you can almost kinda forgive. Like the real life spiders who wear water droplets as hats <3" Well, past me, I think I've done it. Based off of a Black Widow Spider and a Bearded Vulture, I give you: The Spiture. I figure flying nichelings will be the most at risk when it comes to this gargantuan foe, but I suppose really stupid wanderers [or if you willingly sacrifice your nichelings for some sick reason] could get stuck in the web on foot. I figure literally anything can get stuck in the web. I gotta admit, though, I don't really agree with past-me: I think there should be one day between the death of the captured and the Spiture eating it. Why? Because DO WHAT YOU WANT CUZ A PIRATE IS FREE; YOU ARE A PIRATE!!! -ahem- I mean, I think it would be beneficial if you could steal the food, especially if it's from an Ape. Way I see it, though, you would need a strength of, like, 10 to get it without getting caught in the web yourself. What if YOU get stuck? When it is the first day and you still look like the nicheling in the picture with her head and gems visible, you can be saved by another nicheling with at least a 5 in strength. If you are not saved, however, and you pass the day, you'll look like the big web ball in the picture, and will be considered dead. The good side to this? You can harvest food from the web balls, with a nicheling of at least 10 strength. Depending on what they used to be, you could get whatever meat amount you normally get from prey items and predators, and if it's a nicheling I figure giving 3 meat is generous, since normally you get nothing when a nicheling dies.

 7. A mix of "Tiger" and "Turtle", this predator is like a tank- slow, but powerful, with plenty of defense! Tigles spawn in the Jungle, and maybe Home Island, but definitely the Jungle. They are very much like Bearyenas in their predatory behavior, but Bearyenas are definitely lower on the food chain than Tigles. You can probably only find Tigles on Hard/Killer Islands. Tigles are solitary, like Bearyenas, but occasionally you'll find a mom and her cub. Kill the mom, and you can make the cub friendly- now THAT is an ally! If you mate with the Friendly Tigle, you get these stats: Tigle Body: +5 Defense -2 Speed Tigle Jaw: +3 Strength, +2 Smelling Long Tail: +1 Speed Predator Eyes: +3 Sight Red or Yellow fur color Black pattern color Stripes Runner LegsRegular Hind Legs

 13. I like the idea of this, but just as @Lilytuft said, it's not really a real thing that has in science. However, I also like the idea of making this into a special mode as suggested by @thivid08 I think that this combined with what Philo suggested a few months ago could be really interesting ["I think it would be great to have more settings for the sandbox mode. For example toggle buttons for all predator types (want to remove rogue males? Just switch them off). Maybe we could also define stuff like "Maximal tribe size" to add some extra challenge or "Maxium age of animals" so our critters can live longer. Or maybe even some special rules like "Only one male allowed in the pack" or "Tribe can only eat meat".] Just like with the predator types, we could have a tick box for this also because, in real life, there is always going to be "rogue male" types of animals i.e. dogs and getting rid of them isn't really natural

 15. Alright, so I've seen some suggests asking for some type of creature creator/demo mode or whatever. I have been working on this for a while and I thought I'd make a new post since there's a lot more than just "A demo mode". This is gonna be mostly made up of pictures from what I call "Tutorial Mode" and I'll leave a link to a page with pictures without the text from tutorial mode. So first you can access this mode from the home screen like so: And then you would start at the creature creator (and to turn on tutorial mode you do this first (tutorial mode can be either be functional just with the yellow text or an example that goes away after you click)): Which can take you to either the creature list or the select mate screens which look like (also note that the scroll on the right on all screens is not accurate, and is just there to display its existence): (Where you can import creatures from save files like this: ) And confirming a breed brings you to the offspring list which is: Where there are trait statistics and custom filters (list of traits made by @Aysling here: https://strayfawnstudio.com/community/index.php?/topic/626-nicheling-sort-filter-and-select/&page=0#comment-2030) : Or you can go to the punnett square: And from anything outside of the creature lists, you can go to the gem colors (which you can find individually here: https://strayfawnstudio.com/community/index.php?/topic/646-customizable-and-programmable-gem-colors/) And the color cycle looks like this: And after all of that, you could use the creatures you used to start in sandbox mode like this: (Picture in production) So yea, that's all of it. Please let me know of any mistakes I might have made since this was a lot or of any logical inconsistencies. If you want to see the pictures without the text from tutorial mode, you can go to this link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/16dVKParfTHqHpSsuPD_UA_6cozEJ94_4Wtxpff6lIsE/edit?usp=sharing

 17. From the title, I bet you know what this is going to be about… Yep! The Hunger Games! IN NICHE!!! So here’s how it works. There’s 12 districts. You are allowed to claim only ONE district per round. You have to apply one MALE and one FEMALE tribute. Can’t be both females, can’t be both males, just how it works! You ARE allowed to use console… though you don't really feel the same if a console creature wins that you only created for looks than say, a creature that you bred specifically that you love. It doesn’t matter how strong the creature that you apply is. I’m using a Hunger Games generator that could potentially make a rouge male win over a 12 point strength Nicheling! You can only apply 2 creatures at a time. If you wish to apply more than one creature, then you will have to wait for next month’s Hunger Games round. (I want to do these monthly) If you want to remove a creature from the event, just change your font size to a larger size and scream at me to do so, I’ll definitely see it don’t worry. Be polite to each other. If you don’t get a district in time, then you’ll have to wait for next month. Every day, I will update the Official November Niche Hunger Games forum. Each day there’s is going to be additional storyline! (Might do more than one day in each update though because it might take too long) OKAY SO! Those are the basic rules for this event. Now, let me show you the format for applying for a district. Application Forum Username: (your Niche forum username) District: (district # you pick) Tributes: (names of your male and female tributes with PICTURES) Let me fill it out for an example: Application Forum Username: Basil District: 7 Tributes: Daze and Dragon Tear (currently can't insert pics oops) REMEMBER! You can only apply for ONE district and only TWO tributes, one male and one female. This part is optional: You can submit personalities for your creatures. It will help me build more on the storyline since the generator doesn’t really provide much of a story. I will build off of what the generator says and create a story in the process. The winner of the competition gets their creature that won drawn and also bragging rights! It will basically be a full body drawing of the creature that WON (that’s why I don’t recommend using the console since it’s only the creature that won, not your favorite creature). Layout for Districts: District 1: Claimed by A Nicheling Tributes: Adam the Second (♂), Jyn (♀) District 2: Claimed by Lilytuft Tributes: Ossen (♂), Silatlan (♀) District 3: Claimed by Goggles-kun Tributes: Pacific (♂), Lareko (♀) Personalities: Pacific is an excellent swimmer that thinks quickly and is smart. Despite this, he's not very strong and is actually quite gentle. Lareko is a fierce girl with tons of firepower and... kids (LMAO I LOVE THIS) When someone attacks, she lashes out and rams them to death with her surprisingly sharp horns. District 4: Claimed by Kepa-Shanyang Tributes: Birch (♂), Phoenix (♀) Personalities: Birch is a calm, yet hard-working individual. He is very determined, and will stop at nothing to get his goals done unless those goals could get him killed if he tried to hard to achieve them. He's cool-headed and smart, assessing situations and calculating solutions with ease. Phoenix is a spontaneous Nicheling with a fiery personality. They're quick to snap, and are hot-headed. They're very quick to jump to solutions, and to attack. They hate waiting and would like to be doing something nearly all the time. Despite the fact that the two are polar opposites, they balance out each other well and make a good team. District 5: Claimed by RandomWanderer Tributes: Anasire (♀), Mapleshade (♂) Personalities: Anasire is somewhat haughty, she doesn't like to stay anywhere for long - or with anybody, after having seen to many nichelings drained of their lifeblood to create the reincarnated. She is distrustful, jaded and somewhat of a wildcard and somewhat uneasy with relationships. Mapleshade, the first born child on this island, is the only strong link to the founders. He awards others by rank, some living normal lifespans, some unusually long, and some never die. Unlike Anasire, he treats responsibility very seriously. No children of his may be granted eternal live, as much as it hurts. They're somewhat enemies, uneasy allies and, of course, distantly related. Should this come to light, her death would not be swift. Mapleshade is warm, personable, loyal, careful, yet a womanizer, having taken many mates over his life. He is a master hunter to add on top of all that too. District 6: UNCLAIMED Tributes: N/A District 7: Claimed by Basil Tributes: Dragon Tear (♀), Daze (♂) Personalities: Dragon Tear is a level headed young female that generally keeps to herself most of the time. Whenever her family or tribe is in danger, however, all hell breaks loose. She unleashes an inner fury that involuntarily freaks out other Nichelings but at least keeps her family safe from harm. These spurs in energy can lead her into dangerous situations, however. Daze is the complete opposite of Dragon Tear. He is constantly seen showing off and boasting about how strong he is and how he can take on anything. But when the real dangers come along, he runs off with his tail in between his legs in fear. With Dragon Tear's reassurance, however, he is able to make it through these situations. These two paired up make a phenomenal team. District 8: Claimed by Skysplash8 Tributes: Meringue (♂), Emmai (♀) Personality/backstory: Meringue was a baby whose parents shared an immunity gene. I didnt know that until he was born. His mother, Alice, passed away as soon as little Meringue was born. When he was a teenager, he shrank into the shadows until he became an adult. Then he became mates with a female whose name, I think, was Snowberry II. They had a bunch of children before Meringue passed away. Only recently has the story of Meringue reached my other tribes, and now, instead of exiling/drowning sickly creatures, they are valued and known to be blessed by Meringue, god of sickness. Emmai: One time I started a tribe on Oasis. The male had claw, but he didn't pass it on. A bearyena came, and right at that moment, a wanderer appeared with big ears (perfect for hot weather), double claws, and ram horns. She was invited in and took down the Bearyena by herself in two/three hits. She had a lot of children (as much as our food supply could support) and the claw lived on. Emmai and Meringue often unite to creature strong, sickly creatures. Emmai is the god of hunting and strength. District 9: UNCLAIMED Tributes: N/A District 10: Claimed by bostonlobstah Tributes: Bright Star (♂), Ruffle (♀) Bright Star grew up in a stable family environment so he has a steady and devoted personality. He's also really, really strong. Double claws, ram horns, big body, bearyena hindlegs. He's a bit of a showoff with his peacock tail as well. He lives on the shores int he long grass, where he likes hunting rabbils with his family. Ruffle's father died when she was younger so she relied on her mother Perl and her older sister Ripple, who looks almost exactly like her. She has kits of her own now, and is very loving and motherly to them. Although not very strong, she would defend her babies with her life. She can often be found digging up worms on Platypus Kingdom Island. District 12: Claimed by Jojo Tributes: Rowanstar (♀), Night (♂) Personalities: Night is just a cute little guy born in the same tribe as Flame, who was the herald of the savannah winds (unlocked the king of savannah achievement). Night and Flame were fast friends and set out on many adventures together, even founding their own tribe and their own families. Rowanstar is proud and independent, but fiercely loyal. She is able to make good teams with anyone, and Night is one of those creatures she can team with easily. Good luck! And may the odds be in your favor!

 18. yay something I can reply to without it getting awkward Okay, so here’s some tips for anatomy n’stuff, since you asking for that. First off: do not be afraid to use a reference picture! If you’re having trouble with proportions, look up some pictures of cats or animals that look like your creature.

 20. Sure, Adam's story is cool, but it's only a cutseen and a few events. So how about a mode with a little more story? Say hello to Ruins. Basicaly, niche is set in a world that used to have... something. You may find shiny husks with pictures in them of tiny bluebirds or a baby whale. You can shelter in them to build nests. Those children born in them may have unusual traits. Also, frozen figures talk about strange creatures that used those husks. What else happens is up to the devs, but I don't want to ruin(see what I did there?) the no end of niche. Maybe just a little suspence?

Waking up on an early December morning in some pajamas (because half the time I wear normal clothes to bed), and seeing the vents are emitting heat. I grab a blanket, my iPad, and sit on the vent and watch some YouTube videos. Awesome!

 24. Ah, well. She has the hammer tail, so all she can do is crack nuts and kill the occasional bunny. But yeah, she is a flying fish. Don't have many of these, as her dead siblings only had one wing. (And the platypus beak. So they're ducks. Half ducks...)

 27. The turrets are interesting. A « why make it complicated » kind of interesting if I understand well, which is much to my taste seeing as how I am a lazy wolf. How do you target your fighter's area? Also, can the mothership turn or is it supposed to stay roughly horizontal to the planet's surface? I have no such grand design to show myself (I get bored very easily), so I will be content with watching.

 29. @Basil, can I go with district 5, if it's open? Anasire is of mixed blood, or at least as mixed as it gets on an island of reincarnations, divided into several tribes to fit their needs. Somewhat haughty, she doesn't like to stay anywhere for long -- or with anybody, after having seen too many nichelings drained of their lifeblood to create the reincarnated. (Summary: Distrustful, jaded and somewhat of a wild card. Uneasy with relationships.) Mapleshade: As the first child born to this island, he is the only strong link to the founders. Others, however, he awards their rank. Some may live normal lifespans, some unusually long, and others never die. Unlike Anasire, he treats responsibilty very seriously. No children of his may be granted eternal live, as much as it hurts. They're somewhat enemies, uneasy allies and, of course, distantly related. Should this come to light, her death would not be swift. (Key traits: warm, personable, loyal, careful, yet a womanizer, having taken many mates over his life. Aspiration: Master hunter.)

 33. How no one chose district 12 so far is beyond me... like hello it is the district from the protagonist?! Also, now that Basil cleared things up I'd love to join in Username: Jojo District: 12 Tributes: Night (m) and Rowanstar (w) Night is just a little cute guy born in the same tribe as Flame, who was the herald of the savannah winds (unlocked the king of the savannah achievement). Night and Flame were fast friends and set out on many adventures together, even founding their own tribe and their own families. Rowanstar is one of the most important leaders of my oldest safefile (almost 70 hours, I usually never stick that long with one safefile). The safe file is also the one that reached home island first time and unlocked most of my achievements (I was specifically hunting the natural selector one for quite some time). Rowanstar was part of the great hunt for the last prehistoric gene and set out with a patrol to crack open the ice blocks on the specific island. At the time Rowanstar was Rowanclaw and a warrior of MountainClan, she was chosen to lead a patrol and set out into the cold. For MountainClan their patrol was lost, as they never returned, but Rowanclaw and her patrol didn't perish in the cold. They found a mamoth food and a sabrefang Nicheling which made Rowanclaw angry as the needed the armored body to finally end their travels. She was angry at StarClan for always making them go on and on leaving countless Clanmates behind without ever having a home. In her defiance she founded RowanClan, who would set out to one day call the mountains their home again. RowanClan is currenlty the only standing clan as MountainClan perished after trying to hard to fullfill StarClans missions (achievements)

 37. I used to Spiderman climb the doorframes and sometimes swing in between them with my arms as supports... well long story short I fell and hit my chin on the ground, my mom thought I had fallen through the floor because it had made such a loud noise. It got 3 stichtes in the wound. It hurt at the time but when I think about it now it is funny, especially because my mom has the exact same scar, at the same place with 3 stitches (she got it differently though ^^). The second one isn't really an injury and I don't remember it but my mom likes to tell the story. So we were at my uncles house let's call him older uncler because the younger one comes into play to. Well they had a pool and I was like 2 years old or something. My mom was there, my older brother and the younger uncle. My brother did some crap and my mom placed me on the edge of the pool to deal with him. Me being the suicidal kid I was (I really I jumped from all kind of high things when I was younger... thinking about it I still do) jumped in the pool and sunk to the ground like a stone, because I couldn't swim but instead of panicking I just sat there. The younger uncle jumped in an pulled me out and what did I say "Mommy I can swim". ^^
