Well, Skysplashie, you can lick my a—ANKLES, because I have a harder challenge ùwú Introducing: Goggles-kun’s challenge that she would probably hate herself if she actually tried! The rules are simple. You’re not allowed to look at the genes of any creature! No console! You can only breed with friendly bearyenas! If you breed with a horny male, (this is only if it’s an accident,) the impregnated female must perish! Ok have fun my slaves5 points

Gyaar! I thought it might be fun to create a thread for us to share our current projects with our fellow engineers. Here, we have a great deal more room to discuss our gear at length than we do in the workshop. So post your best/worst/fondest projects so the community can learn, critique, and help you improve! With that, I humbly submit my current flagship for your viewing pleasure: Features: -Automatic terrain avoidance -Full shield coverage -speed, Agility, and high stability. -8 automated defense turrets capable of dropping multiple tough enemies at full throttle when weapon fire is most inaccurate -16 long range fire support batteries -Fuel and energy reserves for extended engagements -Surprisingly effective digging -Hover mode -On board fighter bay with replenishing fighters -Automated Fighter launch sequence and bay doors. -Orbital Fire support mode X -Printed on demand "no frills" dedicated high capacity mining and recovery drone -Logic blocks remain with the docking drone for increased ship space The top photo features a hanger I've been working on, but it's looking like cpu performance may be an issue for now. I left the drone core in the ship so I'd eventually have the option to program the fighter to return and dock automatically. If I don't get around to it, I'll probably detach it into the ore box and automate the mining drone. Let me know what you think! I'm open to questions, critiques, and whatnot, such as how the turrets work. Till then!4 points

Wait, you can only bred with bearyenas? I have gone up to 120 days without meeting a cub, other times, two days. Is it instant game over without luck? If you can't invite wanderers, do you keep your creatures immortal, until the infertility and sickness messes up your tribe? I mean, an army of sick purrsnouts could work well enough. If wanderers are allowed it would make the job easier, though. Passing on the line without breeding. Could be fun that way, but ... luck. Yikes. Maybe I'll give it a shot and torture Adan once more.2 points

I struggle with drawing Nichelings so much, funny thing though the best result I ever had was when I tried to draw a Fox & Rabbit hybrid. Otherwhise I just wing it, usually with tons of screenshots from all different angles around. I heard that someone used Badger, Weasel, Fox and Cat reference pictures all for one Nicheling, so yeah, reference pictures2 points

I am just itching for beacons or trackers. I have a project that is flailing - autonomous drones that maintain position left or right of your drone, matching its orientation. Without a way to track the orientation AND direction of the body of the drone, its giving me serious issues. The idea is to manufacture sub drones that will rush to your side and fly in formation. I want to be able to destruct them and manufacture replacements that will rush to your side, so I can dump missile weaponry for digging lasers, or harvesters with ore containers. I hope that formation changes will be workable, too. If you remember the option companions from gradius, you'll know what I'm going for.2 points

Thanks for the explanation. For a mock contribution on my part: I recently realised (because I am slow) that we already had a rising edge of sorts, as modern processors do, and that it was extremely useful. It lets one e.g. use a switch to start a cycle of actions, and repeat said cycle until the switch is turned off. I suppose such behaviour can be implemented in various ways, but the possibility to use only two logic gates plus the switch made me a bit excited. This almost AT-AT here continues walking for as long as the switch is on, and stops when it is turned off. It is small discoveries like that that I am interested in most of all.2 points

yay something I can reply to without it getting awkward Okay, so here’s some tips for anatomy n’stuff, since you asking for that. First off: do not be afraid to use a reference picture! If you’re having trouble with proportions, look up some pictures of cats or animals that look like your creature.2 points

YES. ABSOLUTELY YES. More procedural arenas will be awesome; we want drones designed for performance, rather than being designed to be capable on a set of specific maps. Good design, not just tailored design. Oh, and more of those moving, RIDICULOUSLY lethal bludgeons. Those were hilariously awesome. Put a detectable 'danger zone' indicator around the areas they sweep through. (You're in tha . . . dayyyngah zoooone!)2 points

Alright, so I've seen some suggests asking for some type of creature creator/demo mode or whatever. I have been working on this for a while and I thought I'd make a new post since there's a lot more than just "A demo mode". This is gonna be mostly made up of pictures from what I call "Tutorial Mode" and I'll leave a link to a page with pictures without the text from tutorial mode. So first you can access this mode from the home screen like so: And then you would start at the creature creator (and to turn on tutorial mode you do this first (tutorial mode can be either be functional just with the yellow text or an example that goes away after you click)): Which can take you to either the creature list or the select mate screens which look like (also note that the scroll on the right on all screens is not accurate, and is just there to display its existence): (Where you can import creatures from save files like this: ) And confirming a breed brings you to the offspring list which is: Where there are trait statistics and custom filters (list of traits made by @Aysling here: https://strayfawnstudio.com/community/index.php?/topic/626-nicheling-sort-filter-and-select/&page=0#comment-2030) : Or you can go to the punnett square: And from anything outside of the creature lists, you can go to the gem colors (which you can find individually here: https://strayfawnstudio.com/community/index.php?/topic/646-customizable-and-programmable-gem-colors/) And the color cycle looks like this: And after all of that, you could use the creatures you used to start in sandbox mode like this: (Picture in production) So yea, that's all of it. Please let me know of any mistakes I might have made since this was a lot or of any logical inconsistencies. If you want to see the pictures without the text from tutorial mode, you can go to this link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/16dVKParfTHqHpSsuPD_UA_6cozEJ94_4Wtxpff6lIsE/edit?usp=sharing1 point

So have any of you heard of that book called Awesome? Well, I thought it might be cool to post what we think is awesome. I can start. Getting home after a long day, getting into my Pjs and curling up at my computer with some snacks to play a game. Awesome.1 point

Once upon a time, last year, I felt genuine spite for the Apes, so much so that I wanted a monster that could prey upon EVERYTHING... "One thing I can lament, though: I've wanted a spider-something predator, not to mate with, but to have as a big scary thing. I imagined two of the giant trees in the jungle about three hexagons apart, and in those three hexagons of space between the trees there connects a giant web. Trying to move through the space between the trees results in your nicheling getting stuck in the web. If it has a high strength, it can break itself free, but if not- I'll get to that in a second. Here's the thing: the giant spider monster wouldn't differentiate between nichelings and carnivores, so bearyenas and apes could get stuck in the web, too, and as far as I know none of them have strengths above 5 points. Thus, when the day is passed, the spider descends from the trees, getting closer and closer to whatever is stuck in the web. Once there, it will spin the web even further, making it impossible for even nichelings of 12 strength to break free, where it will then poison its prey and sit there, waiting for it to die. In the case of bearyenas and apes, as soon as the carnivore dies the meat it drops is picked up by the spider, so you don't get a chance to rush in and steal the kill. The spider wouldn't come down off the web because it'd be far too big, taking up a ring of six hexagons with its size. Thing is, I wanted it to be cute; something that, even though it's basically an even more unbeatable beast than the apes, more akin to a carnivorous plant in gameplay, you can almost kinda forgive. Like the real life spiders who wear water droplets as hats <3" Well, past me, I think I've done it. Based off of a Black Widow Spider and a Bearded Vulture, I give you: The Spiture. I figure flying nichelings will be the most at risk when it comes to this gargantuan foe, but I suppose really stupid wanderers [or if you willingly sacrifice your nichelings for some sick reason] could get stuck in the web on foot. I figure literally anything can get stuck in the web. I gotta admit, though, I don't really agree with past-me: I think there should be one day between the death of the captured and the Spiture eating it. Why? Because DO WHAT YOU WANT CUZ A PIRATE IS FREE; YOU ARE A PIRATE!!! -ahem- I mean, I think it would be beneficial if you could steal the food, especially if it's from an Ape. Way I see it, though, you would need a strength of, like, 10 to get it without getting caught in the web yourself. What if YOU get stuck? When it is the first day and you still look like the nicheling in the picture with her head and gems visible, you can be saved by another nicheling with at least a 5 in strength. If you are not saved, however, and you pass the day, you'll look like the big web ball in the picture, and will be considered dead. The good side to this? You can harvest food from the web balls, with a nicheling of at least 10 strength. Depending on what they used to be, you could get whatever meat amount you normally get from prey items and predators, and if it's a nicheling I figure giving 3 meat is generous, since normally you get nothing when a nicheling dies.1 point

A mix of "Tiger" and "Turtle", this predator is like a tank- slow, but powerful, with plenty of defense! Tigles spawn in the Jungle, and maybe Home Island, but definitely the Jungle. They are very much like Bearyenas in their predatory behavior, but Bearyenas are definitely lower on the food chain than Tigles. You can probably only find Tigles on Hard/Killer Islands. Tigles are solitary, like Bearyenas, but occasionally you'll find a mom and her cub. Kill the mom, and you can make the cub friendly- now THAT is an ally! If you mate with the Friendly Tigle, you get these stats: Tigle Body: +5 Defense -2 Speed Tigle Jaw: +3 Strength, +2 Smelling Long Tail: +1 Speed Predator Eyes: +3 Sight Red or Yellow fur color Black pattern color Stripes Runner LegsRegular Hind Legs1 point

Sure, Adam's story is cool, but it's only a cutseen and a few events. So how about a mode with a little more story? Say hello to Ruins. Basicaly, niche is set in a world that used to have... something. You may find shiny husks with pictures in them of tiny bluebirds or a baby whale. You can shelter in them to build nests. Those children born in them may have unusual traits. Also, frozen figures talk about strange creatures that used those husks. What else happens is up to the devs, but I don't want to ruin(see what I did there?) the no end of niche. Maybe just a little suspence?1 point

Never heard of the book, but here’s what I consider “Awesome”. Waking up on an early December morning in some pajamas (because half the time I wear normal clothes to bed), and seeing the vents are emitting heat. I grab a blanket, my iPad, and sit on the vent and watch some YouTube videos. Awesome!1 point

Howdy! In fire support mode, the big ship uses an altimeter and a directional sensor to maintain a stable altitude and attitude relative to the planet, while a second positional sensor tracks the position of my mouse and tells the lateral thrusters when to fire, so the ship will continuously adjust it's position to stay above the location of my mouse. The fire support weapons aren't connected to the defensive turrets. I simply leave their rotation on "cursor" so they continue to aim at my cursor from off screen. It's basic standing order is -stay above the cursor, maintain position, obliterate anything I click on. In free fly mode, the main ship is setup for WASD flight. It can do anything the fighter can do. It can also dig right through a planet at a fairly respectable pace. The only tasks it's unwieldy for are ones where indiscriminate fire is a liability or the ground is too hard to dig. For those, the fighter has more than enough capabilities to handle the job. For snake missions, if I'm feeling lazy, I can do a full throttle orbit of the planet with the fire support system activated and that usually handles it. On the turrets, my original design for an automated defense system didn't use fast spinning turrets and incorporated lasers. The question was how to detect an enemy and then use that information to get a weapon pointed at them. In real life, we typically use radar and spin them for greater coverage, so I'm spinning proximity detectors to emulate one. Proximity detectors don't gather enough information to direct a weapon that isn't already pointed at the same target, so the weapon is mounted on the radar. When the sensor detects a target, it tells the weapon to fire. The significant recoil on the weapon is mostly absorbed by transferring the majority of the force into spinning the turret faster, and the whole thing is enclosed to prevent environmental interference, making the system extremely stable. It's accurate, responsive, and stable. Thanks for the questions!1 point

The turrets are interesting. A « why make it complicated » kind of interesting if I understand well, which is much to my taste seeing as how I am a lazy wolf. How do you target your fighter's area? Also, can the mothership turn or is it supposed to stay roughly horizontal to the planet's surface? I have no such grand design to show myself (I get bored very easily), so I will be content with watching.1 point

You should add the fact that lava rays won’t spawn fireflies unless they have been attacked.1 point

I have been trying to make a drone that can hover at a certain altitude. However, the altimeter isn't working. It is either going full blast and won't stop or it wont work and just sit there. Is it me or is anybody else experiencing this.1 point
-
The testing area is delimited by a square, but has a round gravity field just like the planet it mimics. This is the most mind-shattering design I have found yet in regards to game and physics. As for the altimeter, it worked as intended every time I used it. Try a few different settings is all the advice I can give.1 point
-
Are you working with it in the testing area? It behaves rather inconsistently there; 100 altitude sometimes exceeds the height of the testing area, or is below the floor, based on the size of the planet you're on. Give it a shot on a planet; if it works decently, then switch planets until you find one where the testing area works properly.1 point

I always considered the heating projectiles to be an enemy in and of themselves, like something the rays have a symbiotic relationship with. They certainly behave as if alive.1 point

By the way, how are killer bearyenas born? are they a subpecies, or possibly a genetic mutation? Personally, I think it cant be a subspecies, because there are no babies, and they live alongside normal bearyenas. A genetic mutation may be the case, but then there could be killer bearyenas on other islands. I think its a behavioral pressure. As you can see, on other islands bearyenas are normally solitary, but here, there are tons of prey, so bearyenas are more common and they hunt in packs. Because of this, in order to control the pack, the strongest bearyena excretes hormones that cause its fur to darken, and it grows considerably in size and aggression. This helps it control the pack and keeps the ecosystem in balance.1 point

This should only appear in the killer jungle. Also there should be a sandbox customisation button to turn these off. I'm not that sure about the cannibalism tough. Have my vote!1 point
