Hi everyone. 😁 I recently joined the forum as a kind of way to talk about Niche, seeing as the Steam forums don't seem to be as active anymore. I've played Niche a few times in the past but never for very long so I am hoping to have this tribe stay around for a few weeks, at least... I've managed a few generations so far, which is an achievement for me haha. Annoyingly I just landed in the swamp part of the larger grass island with the rivers running through it... I do have poison fangs in most of my creatures for the toxic berries, but the swamp part is walled in by thorns so while trying to get around along the beach to the grasslands I have had no access to food (other than coconuts which have paralysed 2 of my males from moving from the same spot as coconuts keep falling even when I don't pick them up 😔)... which is starting to be a bit of a concern as I've just ran out and have a Rogue Male sniffing around one of my females. And he has double K Immunity so he's sick, too... luckily even with me sleeping he chose not to breed with her, but I think she could be sick now. 😂 I had to shut the game down before getting to look properly, so that will be an (un)welcome surprise later... oh and it hasn't rained in daayys so even with the toxic berries I can't quite gather enough for everyone as only a few creatures have the nimble fingers, because I had to breed that into them. Most keep being born with the digging paw, and webbed feet which is a terrible combination!! 😂 Not having brilliant luck with the genetic slots either at the moment. One thing I'm hoping to do to combat me getting bored of playing is keeping a family tree! I have been using the MyHeritage Family Tree Builder and I have to say I love it because you can add parent/child and sibling relationships without having to create duplicate entries. Though it throws up a warning saying they're related which I find funny haha. 😂 I have attached it to show you guys because I'm pretty proud of how far it's coming along! I also have an in-depth tutorial on how to use the MyHeritage Family Tree Builder on the Steam guides if anyone is interested. My username is KittHaven there, though there aren't too many guides so it'll be easy to find. 😊 Bye for now haha, Kitt.5 points

I hate it. You only get the pretty starters when you don't plan on a serious playthrough but when you want some great starters you literally have to restart 3000 times (if you don't want to use the console). Also this is great. You should probably do some testing of the drowning issue. Sometimes Nicheling with the same body type and same age take different amounts of drowning damage on the archipelago. I always guessed that is a bug but maybe you can find out something more4 points

THIS TIME ON: NICHEBUSTER Which is more dominant, Gills or Platypus Beak? (Goggles-kun) So we start off with--oh he has lipstick okay only a smudge now anyways moving on First child is Platypus Beak. Second is Platypus Beak. Okay, enough testing. Now I'll switch the parents' heads. That sounds so weird. Eck. Also look at their second child she's beautiful Their third child is identical to her sister (the second one), except for one of the horn colors and her recessive pattern. After a pair of beautiful twins, we have busted this Niche myth; the answer? Platypus Beak is dominant over Gills. Slot4.nichesave This is so fun4 points

Hmm, then you wouldn’t be a mythbuster. You’d be a nichebuster! But I do have a question. Which is more dominant: platypus beak or gills?3 points

@Star Sage has suggested: Which is more dominant, Poison Fangs or Bearyena Snout? So, here I go! I probably won't test it out as much as I did with the Yellow and Violet Eyes, since I've already figured out a mechanic. Off we go! I shall console the starter pair so that the female has Poison Fangs, and the male Bearyena Snout. I'm sorry but just look at this pattern 😮 Annd I glitched it too much (I exited the game, but it's still glitchy) so I have to do this on a new save. Bye bye beauty boy First child: So far it's following the Mother's Genes rule. Second: Third: I'll stop doing screenshots of the children, but I will say what the result for their head gene is. The Fourth has dominant PF. Fifth is the same. Now I'm going to do a different save, this time with the Female having Bearyena Snout and the male having Poison Fangs. Oh no! I deleted the save before I shared it. Oh well First child, and... oh! It looks like Poison fangs might actually be dominant! 😮 Four children later, and the answer is clear: Poison Fangs is more dominant than Bearyena Snout. Slot4.nichesave Next Up: If you IncreaseSpawn PlayerAnimal on Adam's tutorial island, could his family literally live there forever? Which is basically: If you use IncreaseSpawn PlayerAnimal, will it spawn any wanderers? So, here we go! Also, there's an option for PlayerAnimal and one for NPC PlayerAnimal. I wonder what the difference is? I GUESS WE'LL FIND THAT OUT TOO MWAHAHA Here it goes.. And WHAAAT IT'S ADAM'S LONG LOST BROTHER BUT HE CAN'T INVITE HIS BROTHER IN NOOO Another creature! This time it's just a regular one. Also, it appears that you can attack this member of Adam's family and they will attack you back. How unfortunate... Problem is, Adam and his brother have the same amount of attack damage, and both began bleeding on the same day. However, the brother is younger, so he will live longer than Adam. Thus, I will give Adam the status of healing so that he can recover. I also removed Bleeding. No more wanderers appear for a few days, though a pile of bones is found. I continue adding the effect of healing so that Adam will heal, and I also decrease his age. Since no more wanderers are spawning, I IncreaseSpawn PlayerAnimal again. Another wanderer is found the next day, just a regular one. Another brother of Adam is found. No more wanderers spawn. The answer: IF you use IncreaseSpawn playerAnimal on the first island Adam is on, it will spawn wanderers, both normal and Home Island. Slot4.nichesave I started a new savefile to try out the IncreaseSpawn NpcPlayerAnimal, but unfortunately it did nothing at all. Maybe there had been plans for NPCs, but they were never officially added, though their console command was left behind?3 points

...this seems to somewhat have derailed from animals eating other animals, to include their own kind, to debating between human cannibalism. No, it's not a good thing. But animals cannibalize constantly, even their own young, for the simple fact that they're hungry, there's not enough food for the young, they're stressed, they don't know what to do, or plain just go for it and leave the bulk of the bodies behind to rot. Children can indeed learn a lot from this game, but again, it wouldn't be graphic or anything. Hell, Viva Pinata had you feeding them to each other. And that game was definitely geared towards children (at first). It didn't catch on because it was too difficult a game for many at the age that would enjoy the colorful beasties. This game is very similar (albeit no candy or unlimited lifespans/no genetic problems from inbreeding) so having a similar feeding shouldn't be such a big deal.3 points

I'm gonna test a bunch of stuff. Please suggest things you want me to test out! It can be things from 'which gene is more dominant, A or B?' to 'can you just not invite Eve in Story mode but progress through the game?' to infinite and beyond. Here's my list for what to test next (will update as I go): Can you not invite Eve in in Story Mode, but keep on playing? Which is more dominant, Yellow Eyes or Violet Eyes? Or are they equally dominant? (Gonna try and test this @Jojo) Which is more dominant, Poison Fangs or Bearyena Snout? (Star Sage) If you IncreaseSpawn PlayerAnimal on Adam's tutorial island, can his family literally live there forever? (Bostonlobstah) Which is more dominant, Gills or Platypus Beak? (Goggles-kun) Which is more dominant, Sabertooth Fangs or Digging Trunk? Which is more dominant, Toxic Body or Lean Body? What does Adam look like with Mask pattern? How often does an sandbox game starting on Oasis begin with water gened starters? Does it only happen when the starters start inside a river? Okay, first up on the list: Can you not invite Eve in in Story Mode, but keep on playing? I'm sad now I've never seen an Eve with Wing Anyways, here we go... and.... Yay! Tis solved! You can totally leave Eve behind without ever inviting her in! It was kinda obvious you could but i wanted to know for sure okay Slot4.nichesave Second up: Which is more dominant, Yellow Eyes or Violet Eyes? Or are they equally dominant? I'm going to stay on the same savefile. Luckily, Adam finds a female (she's so Lame) pretty soon. Here's pics of them with their mutations (gotta show the proof!): First child.. Hm, dominant Yellow Eyes. Second child.. dominant Yellow. Third child only has Black Eyes. Fourth has Dominant Yellow Eyes. I'm going to do two more, then test this on another pair. Fifth has Brown and Yellow Eyes. I wanted to do this without Console, but I reduce Lame's age so that she lives long enough. Sixth is same as Fifth. Seventh has dominant Yellow Eyes. So far, it seems as though Yellow Eyes is more dominant. However, I'm going to test this on another couple, to test this out more. Slot4.nichesave Now we go to a different save. They're so pretty OoO Anyways, I console them so that the female has Violet Eyes and the male has Yellow Eyes. I exited the game immediately so that no glitches will appear. First Child has Dominant Violet Eyes! That's a surprise! More testing then. Second child and Third Child are twins, and both have Dominant Violet Eyes. Fourth child has those same dominant Violet Eyes. Fifth child is the same. (also invited in a wanderer to dig up roots for us) Hmph. This is hard (and fun)! Slot4.nichesave I'm going to try another save, another scenario. This time, each will have Black Eyes, both dominant and recessive, but for their mutations, the female will get Violet Eyes and the male Yellow Eyes. Ahh I love black fur with blue eyes! Sorry Mr. Male I'm cheating in food because then they can focus on breeding and nesting material rather than food. First child- Dominant Violet eyes. Second child is Black and yellow. Third has dominant Violet. Fourth has dominant Violet. Fifth is Black/Yellow and Sixth is Violet/Yellow. Slot4.nichesave Hm. So far: Just mutations, Male-Violet, Female-Yellow = Yellow; Just genes- Male-Yellow, Female-Violet = Violet; Just Mutations- Male-Yellow, Female-Violet =Violet. I think I know how this works. Both Eye colors have the same dominance level. The dominant one depends on the mother. If the mother gives Violet and the father gives Yellow the children will have Violet eyes. Vice versa is true as well. This is also like it is with paws-- the gene on top, which is usually the dominant one, is always the one from the mother. (I saw that through these tests!) So, the answer is: Whichever eye color the mother passes to her child will be the one that is dominant. (between Yellow and Violet eyes) This was so cool to do! Please give me suggestions for more things to test jeez 17 pictures2 points

Dang. I was thinking of submitting Angel the Skull Kid this time (remember her?) but this works too! Here’s my entry I found from digging through my past screenshots! (I always dig through past screenshots wh-) Here she is! She doesn’t have an actual name because she’s a wanderer, but since I’ll be booted out if I don’t state her name, I’ll call her Chrom. Y’see, I came across Chrom while experimenting with the newest update at the time, so that’s why she had weird patterns on her leg. I also liked Chrom because she’s pretty.2 points

are there seriously NO teens or kids? so I'll have to breed myself a new leader. ^^ but first, it's time to get his or her mum, Angel, onto the next island... I wouldn't want my baby to drown. (Angel's the whitish lady on the tree island) here she is! my matriarch, Reanara - later renamed Chiquita. a few days later, Chiquita is all grown up and a mother of her own daughter, Caramel. another child born that day is Isaac, the son of Hercules, who also happens to be Chiquita's father, and of Anamera, a spikey wanderer accepted to the tribe. day 85. it's time to travel to a new island. we only have to wait until little Gilgamesh and Ananké and newborn Rea get a bit older and mobile. ^^ but wait! who's this? changing plans. old momma bearyena was defeated successfully (not one member of the tribe got injured!) and Chiquita, being the leader, has gotten a privilege to invite poor orphaned baby bearyena in. also little Vanta was born. a wanderer! and I wanted to keep the numbers low... our bearyena's finally adult. time to unlock some bearyena claws. ^^ welcome Herodes, the bearyena hybrid! also Chiquita's given birth to Opaque, her fourth child. day 99, Chiquita died of old age, giving birth to her fifth and last child, Nikita. Who's going to be the new leader? There are five youngsters to pick from: Felicitas, Nikita, Opaque, Job, Herodes (the bold ones all have home island immunity) As for the family tree, I am going to update it, if my predecessor does. This one spoke to me a lot. The prompt was nothing but the image, but WLOP is very talented. You can see that she isn't surprised by her reflection. Almost like she is bored with seeing the wings, and is more interested in the interplay of ripples with the reflected wings. I just started writing, and everything just resulted. I could be happier with this one; there's room for more depth of setting, political intrigue, metaphysical exploration. But it's free now, so I'll respect what it is. No more editing. If I did return to this world, it'd have to be a new story. Image: Water by WLOP (DeviantArt) Wings of Burden I looked into the water with a sigh, feeling the chill of the water soaking into my shift. The water adhered the fabric to my skin revealingly, though the ripples on the water distorted my form. I crouched closer to look at my shape in the water. It was artistic, nature. This art was the highest and purest kind, born from the interaction of natural principles. Below my reflection fish swam, venturing closer with my stillness. And then there were the wings. The reflected wings were the mark of our royal family. There was no questioning who was and was not a Cealiusan. No hiding your bastards, and no denying your heritage. I looked through the water to the fish, and in the reflection, ‘my’ wings adjusted. I knew it was to shade the water to see the fish. I slapped the water and fish burst away in all directions, the disturbed water ruining the image of my wings. I rose, my good mood spoiled, and walked to the edge of the lake. The walls rose around me on all sides, windowless. They shut out the sun in my private garden, and as I peeled off the shift, the shade raised goosebumps all over my body. I went inside and grabbed a towel from the bathing chambers to dry myself. “You wouldn’t be so cold if you used the hot water in the bath.” I looked at Tyla, the young serving girl assigned to me. She was clumsy sometimes, but I forbade anybody from having her replaced. She was young, awkward, at times even impertinent. But she had a good, honest heart. It must have been her upbringing on her farm – you didn’t find things like that in girls raised to the court. I intended to nurture it. She had to armor her heart, but honesty and goodness could be armor, too. I just had to teach her to use it, before someone injured her too badly to try. “It’s a little square box with water in it. It’s boring.” I knew I was being unfair. The bath was probably a six or eight steps to a side, with beautiful artwork on the tile, and fountains at each corner, each one complex and artful. But none of it made a dent in the natural beauty of the rocky pool in my courtyard garden, regardless of how artificial and cultured the gardening was. “You’ll make yourself sick, one day.” “Tyla, I know you worry, but you won’t deny me my garden.” She came close, and I stood before the mirror, spreading my arms. My reflection spread her arms and folded her wings. Tyla dressed me, seeing to the complexities of a royal dress; buttons and ties and ribbons and stays. In the reflection, she also saw to fitting the wings through gaps in a dress, fastening the dress around the base of those wings. I fretted over what I saw again. It wasn’t just an illusion. Things changed in the mirror. Clothes changed, people’s actions changed. People would step out of the way of the wings when they did not move in life. It always closely matched life, though. It was as if the world in the mirror was another world, and every person had their own life, and only my mirror personality was any different from who they were here. I wondered if she saw herself, wingless, in the mirror. I wonder what she thought about it. Here, it was seen as a mark of divinity. She would have that mark on her back, but it would not exist in a mirror. Did she wonder if her right to rule was an illusion, as I did? If she were like me, she would have to. “There. You’re beautiful today, Leila.” I smiled. I knew she didn’t tell white lies. I looked at her in the mirror as she took the towel from around my hair, rubbing and drying it, then brushing it out. “Tyla . . . do you ever wonder why my family deserves the wings?” She shook her head fiercely. “No! I know you. Of course, you deserve them. I don’t know your family well, but you deserve them. Just that you question it, proves it.” I watched her as she brushed the tangles loose, surprised at her fervor. Then I smiled. She made too much sense for me to dismiss her words out of hand. Anybody else would have just vomited praise on my shoes until I dismissed them. I turned quickly, and hugged her close. “Don’t change. I need a friend like you. One day I’ll rule these people, and I’ll need you all the more. Be my rock, someone I can trust. I’ll protect you forever, Tyla.” She looked up at me, her eyes wide. I had long since given her leave to address me by name, but I hadn’t used the word ‘friend’ before. But to my surprise, there was hurt in her eyes. “Of course . . . Leila, of course. Nobody’s looked out for me like you have. How could you think I wouldn’t be there for you?” I caressed her hair, and sighed. “The court is a complicated place. There is little someone like me can count on. You are remarkable, that way. Don’t let this place change you, Tyla. I will protect you. Your honesty will keep you safe. Remember that, if things ever seem too complicated to do the right thing.” She pressed back against my chest and hugged me. “Okay.” Then she pressed back, and turned me back to the mirror, to face myself and my wings. “Now sit still! I have to finish your hair.” I smiled, watching her work over my shoulder, and relaxed. My mirror image dipped her wing so that she – I – could see. There was at least one small part of the future that I knew I could trust. It might be the only rock left in my future. But her purity was a potent thing. It would be enough.2 points

In the course of checking up, I revisited my prion research for an old story. To circle back to an earlier point on the conversation, there's this chain: This goes back to prions - malformed proteins that do not perform their job correctly and can become infectious. They are typically in the brain. Mad Cow is a prion disease. It is NOT eliminated by cooking, acids, or a whole lot of sterilization procedures, hence why cooking a burger well-done would not protect you from Mad Cow, and eating it makes you sick, where stomach acid would kill many other diseases. Prions cause a number of diseases that affect the brain and are typically fatal. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is one of these. As mentioned above, they are typically in the brain, but can be muscle proteins, or hitch a ride in them, as well as being able to contaminate food sources through mishandling. In the end, they're in nervous system tissue, so anywhere that system extends carries that risk.2 points

Well, here it is, a bit late, yes, but here it is! Who is it? IT'S MERINGUE! @Skysplash8 Sorry I couldn't get this done by Christmas! I was on break in California, and couldn't do it by then! I'm actually super proud of this?? It's the longest I've ever spent on drawing something, and it taught me how to draw paws without making them stubs! (Also, if you're wondering where his gems are, I couldn't fit them onto his body without them looking weird. Just imagine they're on the front of his chest and you can't see them from this angle!) the spots were a hell to make and place. I had to do a lot of guesswork on em hshjkddsdld also if you're wondering where he is, he's on whale island. there's someone in the grass...2 points

It's a nice way to look back on your progress after a while 😁 Unfortunately the tribe has now died out from starvation, a Bearyena attack, and Rogue Males swarming me all at once haha. Got to the first 5th generation baby, then he was the last remaining and couldn't find a mate... but still nice to see the progress on the tree. Hopefully my next one will be more successful!1 point

Wow, that looks awesome! I like the idea, but so far I've been to lazy myself. After I've seen this however, I'll maybe try it. So far all of my tribes are already running for quite some time, but when I start a new one, I'll try do get myself to do it.1 point

You can still play your safe file normally even after 'finishing' the story mode. So it is a rather soft goal. Also something you should be aware of in story mode whale island will only show you islands of the difficulty you already have unlocked. If you find it in story mode without having been to hard or killer islands you will no be able to access them until you have reached them manually through travelling. While travelling the following rule goes: Left port (left from the port you landed on) easier island, right island of same difficulty and up/ norht harder island if there is no north port always go right1 point

You can use console commands for a different snout. I'm used to the derp, but it did take some time. Playing related challenges is a thing, but we all have genes that are just... no. Yellow/black fur for me, so no judgement here. Just remember to exit the game and restart it after messing with a creature's genetics. If you don't when their head size changes, the game will crash and -- possibly -- delete your savefile. Never happened to me, but some have lost a few saves to it. F1+ setgene on PC. (Further points: Also unlocks ancient/bearyena genes when you give them to a creature and restart the game. Might give you unearned achievements on steam. Messing with spawn rates can result in giant, empty patches on some islands, but not on others. Messing with the weather might transport you some odd 1000 days into the future. Changing a creature's gender and letting them have children as both sexes always crashes the game. Rogue males can be impregnated, but not give birth. Making a creature "immortal" with the age command (-999) will make them die in one hit and be eaten by bluebirds. ) Most issues should be fixed in the new update around February. Best wishes for a largely derp-snout free line!1 point

My only goddess is Anameme, the goddess of Well Being, who seems to always appear during times of peril to help and often save the tribes. She is always reincarnated with a red-ish or brown-ish fur colour. I have no pictures, but the original had a sniffer snout (thats what I call them lol), a claw, and a velvet paw. The first time she came was as a wanderer to save us from a bearyena, and the second was as a started nicheling. After that I can't remember, but she continues to appear every once and a while. Hopefully I can add more Gods and Goddesses soon, I'll just have to wait for some to appear!1 point
-
maybe they could just add all the other letters to make 26 immunity genes (27 including home island gene) because right now wanderers can be technically related to your tribe members and that makes no sense whatsoever so new immunities would help that1 point

Happens to me too! My islands suddenly get deleted and it's very depressing, I wish you the best of luck to getting it back, recommend making a back up of it before you go into your game each time, tedious but it works.1 point

I think it would be great to have more settings for the sandbox mode. For example toggle buttons for all predator types (want to remove rogue males? Just switch them off). Maybe we could also define stuff like "Maximal tribe size" to add some extra challenge or "Maxium age of animals" so our critters can live longer. Or maybe even some special rules like "Only one male allowed in the pack" or "Tribe can only eat meat".1 point

So when you edit a drone, there are times you wish you could borrow stuff from drones you already made. With a save as parts group button while having a bunch of parts selected (the one selected and all the ones hooked up to it), It would then be possible to reuse parts arrangements in multiple drones instead of without rebuilding from duplicates (or even from scratch). Basically it would be like a big inter-drone clipboard.1 point

oH mY gOsH I'm definitely joining this, I'll post a screenshot soon Look at my beautiful fish child, Dragon Tear ❤️ EDIT: So I decided to add her backstory in here since I just want people to be informed more about this mysterious Dragon Tear Dragon Tear was born on a rainy stormy night, being the first of her 5 siblings to not be sick. Her mother named her Dragon Tear based off the pain she endured while watching her children die before her but the strength she saw in this small delicate strand of hope for the tribe. As Dragon Tear grew, all of her sickly siblings had passed just after she earned her final gem and her parents passed soon after. Dragon Tear isolated herself far from the tribe because she wanted to grieve alone. While she was out, something happened to the rest of her tribe. The Apes attacked. One big eyed ape and one big nosed ape came along and began to terrorize the tribe. Hearing about this from a winged creature in her tribe, she raced back and ultimately sacrificed herself to the apes so the newborn babies in the tribe could thrive. She finally realized that the one thing she needed was company and the feeling of her tribe around her.1 point
