  2. Was I the only person who played this demo and beat it 5+ times? Around 2015-2016 I found this demo and played it, it was either late 2015 or early 2016.

  3. Well I wouldn't mind removing the downvote button. I agree it is disencouraging to get downvotes. But I also think we should have an option to change our minds. Like double clicking on it will remove it again

  4. Hmm strange. We didn't change anything. But I was actually thinking about changing this anyways Maybe it would make more sense to remove the downvote button for good? Because if an idea is not super popular, it most likely won't get implemented anyways. And it might be discouraging to get that many downvotes fo an idea, especially for people who are new to the forums. What do you think?

  5. its the next day! and so many things have happened. most notably, a gorgeous baby named greatheart has been born to sprucespike and bloodstripe, and that will be their last child. also, cloudmeadow is an adult! her painted markings are as gorgeous as ever. nightheart is pleased, as she knows her daughters have found out what they love to do in life; cloudmeadow paints markings and gathers berries, and raincloud loves building nests to the best of her ability. (oml I caught raincloud mid-blink and she looks like such a mood) flamethorn made it to the tree, and she chats happily with raincloud and the gorgeous cloudmeadow. she starts to worry if this white nicheling may be considered more beautiful than her soon, and her questions are answered when she spots maplestar watching cloudmeadow with a spark of love in his eyes..! nightheart decides that she should take raincloud to the nest she was born in to show her how her mother decorated nests so long ago. the child is exicted beyond belief, and can't wait to learn the nest-decorating methods of the grandmother she nether met but loves so dearly- she even hunts a mole on the way, the same mole widowstar struggled to catch when nightheart was just a baby, still in the nest. bloodmoon chats with his niece, who has just been left behind by raincloud, and maplestar approaches cloudmeadow, talking nervously to her, wondering when he should confess his love to her. see you on the next day!

  10. surprisingly in the morning, bloodstripe gave birth to a baby in the same nest as flamethorn was born in. they called her redwood, and they are all happy to see a new face in the nest. the parents decide they should have more children, however, because there are not many males left except for the leader and bloodmoon they prepare for another child. flamethorn runs off to the tree, and bloodmoon quickly chases her. at the tree, raincloud decides to try and repair the nest and does very well at it with the help of her mother. cloudmeadow decides to gather some berries, and splattering some juices everywhere on accident, decides to try paint some pink markings on her white fur as if she was a fluffy canvas. she paints some gorgeous markings, and the entire tribe is amazed at the skills of her painting! (you do not even want to know how nervous I was using console to do the markings on cloudmeadow lmao I backed up the save and everything) (also I was ready to set the pattern colour to red and white but it actually turned out she had red and white pattern colour anyway lol)

  11. were back! considering were only on day 26 and the savefile says ive been playing for about 4 hours, I think this is the longest stretched out playthrough ive ever done lmao. nightheart, staring down at the dead crabbit at her feet begins to accept that things will change, and her priority now needs to change from mourning her lost love to raising her two new babies, and the new leader maplestar is happy to help his older sister. nightheart decides the first order of business to help her children learn is to teach them how to crack acorns. surely if their mother could do it, they could too. cloudmeadow tries to crack one open, but her "nimble finger" begins to hurt and she just cant figure it out- but she doesn't tell her mother, since she thinks that she wouldn't know better than her; she's just a silly child, after all. maybe the pain in her "nimble finger" is normal. nighthear continues to force her to crack the acorns thinking she will improve, which cloudmeadow agrees to, even though she's in pain. maplestar seems concerned about the situation, seeing cloudmeadow's paw getting worse and worse every time she tries to crack something, but decides to wait and see if it will solve itself the new family- bloodstripe, sprucespike and flamethorn- are starting to settle down. they clear out the area more, and discuss what they should do with their new baby. she is the most beautiful of the tribe, and that should mean she would be better off being taught formally with the leader and her cousins, bloodstipe decides. sprucespike seems conflicted: he can spot what is happening with cloudmeadow and nightheart easily, and he doesn't want the same to happen with their child. after some arguments, they decide to keep her where she is to grow up and see what happens- the baby herself hasn't even had a say in the matter, after all. in the morning, maplestar musters up all the courage in him and confronts nightheart, after watching her force cloudmeadow- and now raincloud- to try and crack the acorns. "as the leader, it is my duty to inform you that what you are doing is wrong" he states, trying not to giggle. this is his first formal leader conversation, and he is pretty nervous. "what do you mean? the children are fine. they just need more practise, and they'll get there eventually. raincloud has nearly got it but cloudmeadow seems to be getting worse every day... which is strange, because she's the one with the nimble fingers. im sure they'll be just like their mother soon." nightheart replies, unaware of the situation. "that's what it is, isn't it?" maplestar was serious, not even giggling at the situation like he was before. "what do you mean? what is what?" "you want them to be like hazelmist. you're heartbroken at her lost, and haven't fully grasped shes gone, and youre trying to make your children like her to refill the hole in your heart. you're forcing them to do things you know they can't do, instead of figuring out what they can do and letting them do that" "what do you mean "cant do"? cloudmeadow has nimble fingers. of course she can crack the acorns." "if you actually looked at your daughter instead of looking at her and thinking of hazelmist, you would realize that isn't a nimble finger. that's a crippled paw, and you forcing her to do things with it has made it even worse. look." nightheart, slightly doubting her leader, glanced over at her daughter's paw. it was sore and swollen, and you could see the skin underneath was blood red. she was frozen in shock- she had no idea what she had been doing, and no idea how much she had been hurting cloudmeadow,- with tears in her eyes, she ran to cloudmeadow and explained everything to her, hoping she would forgive her, but knowing that she wouldn't. but, the pale white nicheling answered: "no, im sorry. I was going to tell you, but I doubted myself. if I had told you, you would have realized, and everything would be fine. you just miss hazelmist, I do too, and you saw her as us. you weren't purposely hurting me, were you?" she smiled. nightheart was shocked. how did her daughter forgive her? not only did she forgive her, but she completely understood. she smiled back and replied "no, I didn't. but I need to learn to love you as cloudmeadow, and love raincloud as raincloud." "and I need to learn to tell you when somethings wrong instead of doubting myself." "and, also, we need to find somebody who has learned how to make deformed paws better after evil mothers force their children to crack open acorns because they miss their dead mate, dont we?" nightheart giggled, hoping her daughter wouldn't get offended by the joke. "we might. but I think it just needs some rest." as the two settled down together, mother and daughter, maplestar smiled proudly. he loved his oldest sister, and his nieces, and knew this clan will last centuries. unrelated to story: woAH that was a long one but I wanted to get that scene right instead of skipping stuff,, hopefully you liked it? I made most of the whole "nightheart misses her dead lesbian girlfriend so she pretty much abuses her kid until the leader steps in and solves it" thing up pretty quickly, so there may be some weird bits where the story makes no sense and I may have gone too far into some dark themes and offended some people, so pls tell me if I did because im sort of nervous to post this aahhhhh

  12. Add a selection criterion, and "Enemy unit," with the settings for that criteria, appear in the part settings. Add 'terrain,' and a 'terrain' heading appears, with outputs for that detection event. Scrolling may be necessary but can be mitigated by permitting the user to collapse each heading to hide the outputs once they've set them to satisfaction. Alternately, tab each criterion. This is, however, unlike any other part UI, and would require some UI layout, design, and coding work. UI work can get notoriously choppy, so I wouldn't expect it yet. Micah has publicly expressed that he'd like to shift to a UI that allows you to freely add inputs and outputs, so that you could have an if gate that would trigger on two possible criteria, for instance. And here, we have one sensor carrying multiple criteria. With this apparent intent of making sensors and logic more powerful, I'm less inclined to oppose (As I have done in the past) the idea of one sensor being able to handle multiple criteria, with per-criteria outputs. A week ago I might have shied from the idea, but this update seems to show an intent that isn't incompatible with logic/sensor parts that can do more than one thing.

  13. Full autonomy would be ideal, but probably unachievable. The VTOL thrusters only point TOWARD the sensor criteria, right? Even if you can flip them, we need some sensors so the drones don't crowd - they have to push away from neighbors, and cut off opposing thrust so they don't sit stationary when they try to keep their distance. (Or, if the vectors are weaker, just overpower them by using normal thrusters for avoidance. A "Master" drone is one solution to centering, and is sometimes used, but to be really swarmy, even the master uses an average center as a criteria. #1 is the real brutal one. It would take a ton of logic just to get each drone to return vector data, but to average it would be ridiculous. I support this whole-heartedly.

  16. When is the next update set to come out? Is there gonna be a test branch for it? If so, when will that come out? Im really excited about the new update you have no idea...... Also! Question about the whole extending a nicheling's life - does it only affect tribe members? Or wanderers you find as well? Imagine running into a rogue male that lives for like, 60 days lmao.

  17. Where is my downvote button? Was it too rude to have the option of voting down? Were people being mean with their votes? If so, I understand. But, what if I accidentally upvote something I really don't want in Niche? How will I remove that vote?

  18. This one is really basic but this is how it works, in the family tree above or below the Nicheling that would say something along the lines of "Born: Turn X, Death: Turn X" Ex: Born: Turn 15, Death: Turn 31 And for the creatures who haven't yet died; Born: Turn 39, Death: Turn N/A I was originally going to try and edit in what I thought it could look like, but I was unable to find a decent editing program that wouldn't mess up the quality of the entire image or just wouldn't edit properly. Rip.

  19. Balance Bears are fairly easy to survive because they only move one tile at a time so are incredibly easy to outrun. That is, unless there are more than one on top of you. I usually pick a nicheling that I don't like to be the 'bait' and make the balance bear chase them, leading them away from the tribe

  21. flamethorn suddenly leaps away from bloodmoon (whilst he is talking to her, how rude!) to catch a mole, and she succeeds with ease. the tribe is starting to realise how skilled of a hunter she really is. and well done me I just tried to move the camera and skipped the day, so a lot of things just happened. just as they nearly got to the nest nightheart was born in, she passed away suddenly before raincloud could do anything. she runs to her sister's side in tears and tells her the news, and she is in so much shock she doesn't know what to do. she asks to see her, and they go to her remains. maplestar follows, comforting the sisters as he did when cloudmeadow hurt her paw. the news spreads to the tribe, but they all know deep down nightheart will be happy to see her mother and father again, and the day continues on without a lot of mourning. maplestar offers to dig up a grave for her, and the two happily accept, as they place their mother in the grave. bloodstripe is quite distressed because she knows she will pass soon if her sister passed, and goes to her mate to tell her the news. he is happy to know, since he will also pass soon, and he wouldn't want his mate to be left behind without him for too long. they tell their children the news too, and they are quite sad, but know life will continue the next day, sprucespike passes peacefully in the night, leaving bloodstripe quite sad, but she continues with the day. raincloud made her way to her mother's nest in the night, and she settles down peacefully, studying the decorations left by her ancestors. she decides to stay a while longer, and maplestar decides to finally confess to cloudmeadow. she happily accepts to becoming mates, especially since he is the one who confronted her mother so many days ago, and they decide to use the nest raincloud has decorated. however, they cannot make it to the nest in time, and raincloud takes this as an opportunity to decorate the nest even more. redwood digs a grave for her father, and they bury him quietly near the nest. the next day passes quickly for bloodstripe and her children, who are lonely without the other three- who are busy settling down for cloudmeadow's baby. the nests are deteriorating without raincloud, and the tree has been nearly abandoned altogether. the day passes, and a baby boy is born! they call him hazelbreeze after his mane, which reminds all of them of the baby's grandmother, hazelmist. maplestar immediately senses the home island immunity inside of him, and says he could become hazelstar one day in the future. the rest of the day is food gathering, and things seem peaceful on the island. however, when all seemed peaceful, a wandering nicheling called oakblaze announced his presence to the rest of the tribe "weak ones!" he bellows, his claw glinting in the sun shining through the clouds. "I have come to seek the fierce beauty of the fair maiden, lady flamethorn! where art thou, my precious rose?" everyone immediately looked to flamethorn, who was shocked by the sudden appearance of this nicheling and his strange way of speaking, but somewhat intrigued. he was very confident like her, and had a fiery red mane, which she saw as quite handsome. to be continued tomorrow (or maybe today)!! hopefully you like oakblaze, I got pretty creative with him ^v^

  22. My tribe finally got another ancient gene! I wrote all that stuff in the journal but the post was so long it got erased. But anyways here are my submissions: Snowbringer-- he is the son of Queen Amethyst and her ancient mate, Dash. Probably won't get any votes at all but he's the first creature I've had that can qualify for this. Sky- the second and final child of Queen Amethyst and Dash. Quite pretty! Too bad she didn't get active Scorpion tail.

  23. heres the rest of the day as bloodstripe and sprucespike carry on with the day, they are surprised to see bloodmoon jump out of the grass as they cleared it out. "hey there! nice to see you! aww, and the baby is so cute! what did you call her, the beautiful little one?" "hi! nice to see you again! where have you been? we called her flamethorn, by the way." bloodstripe replied cheerfully, happy to see her brother, but confused about where he has gone for the past few days. "oh, you know. I went out hunting, and when I went to come back I saw all the drama happening at the tree and decided to give them some space. I got a bit impatient, so I just came here to see how you were getting along." "ok, that clears stuff up. im pretty sure they're all better around there, though! we might go up there soon to let flamethorn meet her cousins, how about you come?" eventually, the entire family ended up talking with bloodmoon long into the night. flamethorn seemed curious of the visitor, and she was eventually talking with them too. she was very confident the whole time, and they all found her quite entertaining to watch.

  25. I agree. I shy away from ideas that would reduce creative thinking, such as suggestions to make stable structures significantly easier to build. I've enjoyed learning quite a bit about modern engineering by teaching myself how to methodically plan drone structures from the bones on up. I like the sensor changes, because I think they'll actually increase people's creativity by giving them more tools to create with rather than easy solutions to problems that have already been solved.

  26. For first snow I'd recommend if starting out there (of course go for the iceblocks) and look for berry bushes. They lure bunnies and can feed you. If you get lucky enough to have a poison resistant wanderer that is even better as you can then feed from the toxic berry bushes. Also hunt the bunnies. Walrus Deer are usually to bothersome and at the beginning you will most likely not have the strength to fight the balance bears. If a balance bear approaches lead it down to the ocean and leave as quick as possible. That usually works for me. Ramfoxes are a great source of food as well as coconuts if you know how to pluck them up without getting nocked on the head. If there is an oak tree just camp beneath it. Digging up roots can also be very helpful. I'd go for a mix of tactics. Don't overspecialize in one direction. That is usually good for First Snow and Summer Mountains. Also don't get your population up to high.

  28. My issue with this would be intuitivity. How would one make a UI for that that isn’t confusing to new players? Also I feel that having different detection criteria for different detectables in one part is a bit... off. I think that multiple sensors should be necessary if you wanted to do that.

  29. go for the ice blocks, get claws (bearnea claws preferrably) try to stay away from the grass and breed in derp snouts early on, since they add distasteful appearance and itll help early on. try staying at the peak, youll find more balance bears/ ramfoxes/ walrus deer. usually dont bother with walrus deer, and try to kill as many balance bears as possible; with big body and claws the balance bears are actually easy to take down. the only other thing i can think of is to keep numbers relatively low (around 6-10) but dont go too low since youll run out of fighters to kill balance bears. it took me a few tries to get an ice tribe going, but dont give up

  32. Nice! I built something similar a while back that used spinning clones that tracked my mouse cursor. They moved like a school of fish because of the interaction between their constantly adjusted minimum spacing and the need to all travel to the same point. The practical problem was the huge number of sensors it took to prevent them all from flying into whatever you looked at. These sensor changes will make them much more viable. While you're editing the proximity sensor, would it be possible to give each sensor criteria it's own detection event? Something similar to how batteries can send both an "empty" or a "full" signal event. That would allow a drone to respond to different stimulus differently with a single sensor. Great work guys!

  35. The rift, once you set up the sensors, has you trace your play area out with the controller. This sets up a 'safe zone'. When either controller (Or headset, I think) gets close to this, a wireframe appears, outlining the borders of your play area, so that you can orient yourself and back away from hazards. I don't know if Vive does the same, (I expect it must,) but Steam's VR platform has something called a chaperone which I believe has the same function, though I haven't investigated it.

  41. as the next day passes, everyone begins to go back to normal. widowstar, who has already informed everyone he will also pass soon, went to do some hunting. hazelmist and nightheart go back under the tree, and gather enough acorns to feed the tribe. sprucespike hunts with widowstar, comforting him, and bloodstripe wanders off to clear her mind. she finds a nest by the shores, which she quietly giggles at, because she never thought she would have children. just as she goes to carry on exploring, bloodmoon approaches her to tell her the wanderer who she admired so much was called sprucestripe, which immediately made her realise what this nest was trying to tell her. she glances over to sprucestripe, as he comforted her father. she knew what she wanted to do. as the day passes, so does widowstar. maplefang is named maplestar, and he nervously wonders what he should do with the rank of leader. maybe I could just carry on as normal, and everyone will be ok, he thought. although everyone is saddened by the death of the first two nichelings, nightheart and hazelmist decide they should have children before hazelmist passes too. nightheart approaches bloodmoon and asks if he could be the father of their child, and he agrees happily. hazelmist settles down in a nest, and the two anticipate the birth of their child. as the day passes, cloudmeadow is born; a gorgeous white female, who makes nightheart and hazelmist very happy. the tribe distracts themselves from the death of the first two creatures by playing with the baby, and she shyly hides next to her mothers, one of which are preparing for their next child, as she knows she will be passing soon. bloodstripe finally confesses her love to sprucespike, who is shocked that anybody thought that he wasn't an ugly outcast. they bread and settle down in the nest bloodstripe found yesterday. as the new mating pair settled down, hazelmist gave birth to her final child, raincloud, and passed from the pain moments later. nightheart was frozen in despair, and maplestar came to comfort her. "its nice to see some new babies in the tribe, it was getting boring without any youngsters to liven things up around here. im sure cloudmeadow and raincloud will make great additions to our clan." nightheart smiled softly. she was also exited for the birth of her sister's first child.

  42. ok, I played through the next few things and some very interesting stuff has happened. here it is: widowstar and thornwhisper, realising their daughter will be fine on her own, decide to take her on a scouting mission to the nearby tree. they attempt some hunting, but they are too slow, and too distracted by the nest that has been found. a few days of hunting pass (with varying results *cough* widowstar is still stupid *cough*) and eventually the pair decide it is time to settle down and have a new child, as they do not want nightheart to grow up alone. just as thornwhisper prepares her nest for a child, a wandering creature appears from the grasses, who introduced herself as hazelmist. she noticed nightheart struggling to find roots because of her poison fangs, and offered to help her. thornwhisper seems suspicious, but widowstar glances at her nimble fingers and decides she should be invited in. reluctantly, thornwhisper offers the mole she just caught to her. as nightheart returns from a root gathering expedition, she notices this mysterious female sitting with her parents, happily discussing different things- she introduces herself, and they immediately become friends after they head off to gather the roots nightheart had not noticed before. early the next morning, a new baby lifts her head from the moss surrounding her nest. widowstar and thornwhisper look down at the baby happily, and they name her bloodstripe after her bright red fur and blood red stripes. she seems eager to explore, and nightheart happily offers to wait until bloodstipe is old enough to leave so she can go with her older sister.

  44. Control The Genes of Wanderers- Since we have to ability to customize the nichelings that we start with, I was thinking about a mode where you could customize the wanderers as well by setting a list of genes that can appear. You want most of your wanderers to have big nose? You can do that. Want to rid those webbed hindlegs that seem to always curse your tribe? Boom. Of course, you wouldn’t be able to change a rouge’s genetics, but it would still be cool to find wanderers with customized genes.

  46. ok so im back I just played the next few days widowstar and his new mate thornwhisper settle down in their new home, anxiously waiting for the birth of their child. early next morning, they find a tiny child in the nest at thornwhisper's feet. she quietly opens her eyes, revealing pupils that are as dark as the cold abyss of space "nightheart" widowstar mumbled softly. "lets call her nightheart" ARE YOU PROUD OF ME MUM I WROTE SERIOUS the next day, adams journies towards the mole he heard earlier in the grasses, hoping for some food to feed his new daughter. and he is trapped with berry bushes so he cant get to the mole. for fu- hecks sake widowstar I thought you turned into a responsibe adult but no quite annoyed, he goes the other way to get to the mole, before he pounces and kills the mole. meanwhile thornwhisper worries about this whole new challenge of raising a child, watching as nightheart sniffs the air with curiosity, catching the scent of a root. she tries to follow her father, but thornwhisper grabs her, still worried about her. she has no ram horns or big body, after all. nightheart, eager to prove her strength to her mother, leaps to her father side and digs up the root she smelt, feeding both her parents for the day. unfortunately, thornwhisper is too caught up in her daughters safety to recognise she has been infected with a leech, which nightheart notices immediately and pulls of her mother. widowstar and his mate begin to realise that her daughter may be called nightheart, but she has a heart of gold. well done me I actually wrote seriously for most of this post. yaay for seriousness. on another note though I actually love the way this story has gone
