Dear Drone Engineers, We just released the new Racing Update on the preview branch! We need your help to test the game, report bugs and give us feedback about the new gameplay modes, so we can improve them before it goes live! This testing phase will go on for a few weeks depending on your feedback and how many bugs you'll find Please post your feedback in the discussion forum. Keep in mind that this preview build is still a work in progress, therefore I strongly recommend to back up your savefiles before downloading the preview branch. Here is where you can find the savefiles and logfiles: https://strayfawnstudio.com/community/index.php?/topic/651-please-read-this-before-posting/ Patchnotes New Features New Location: Racing Ring with three different racetracks and highscore lists New drone vs. drone tournaments: Race and Catch New training mode for tournaments New tutorial for autonomous racing Added possibility to sort drones alphabetically or by date Added text field to filter drones Added new steam workshop tag for racing drones New Drone Parts: Proximity Sensor (can detect things inside an area defined by radius and angle) Rng Gate (the rng gate has a configurable probability that the output key is activated) Vtol Thruster (vtol thrusters rotate to a target direction automatically) Afterburner (afterburners are strong thrusters that are only usable at high velocity) Position Tracker (position trackers can be used as target for the directional sensor and the vtol thruster) Reworks: Synchronized logic and sensor parts with the physic simulation Reworked the solar systems to contain less sumo rings and added racing locations. Sumo and racing test-areas are now always accessible from the drone workshop Added individually configurable detection layers for the distance sensor and proximity sensor. Added option for sensors to detect harvestable resources The laser of the distance sensor is now better visible on higher zoom levels Made the distance sensor round, so it can be rotated better Added dynamic mission objectives. For example if only 9 eggs are spawned, the mission will no longer require you to destroy 10, Removed velocity limitation for droneparts Increased upper limit of the speed sensor to 300 m/s as reaction to the unlimited velocity Keypresses are now allowed in sumo and racing test-areas to help testing the logic Importing your own drones from steam will no longer apply the downloaded flag. Changed the tournament statistics and added the option to not upload your drone Replaced some images with videos in the tutorials to make things clearer Added a confirmation dialogue when deleting a drone Bugfixes: Fixed randomly changing planet sizes on galaxymap Fixed decimal input for drone part settings Fixed scrolling of drone descriptions using mousewheel Fixed too high thruster force while playing with low fps Fixed spawn system to avoid unsolvable missions Improved drone workshop performance when working on larger drones Improved loading times of drones with factory parts Misc: Upgraded our engine to Unity 2018.3 Because this update contains new drone parts that are not yet live, the upload of sumo drones into the tournament is disabled. You can still play sumo tournaments, but the drones wont end up in the existing pool. We had to reconfigure almost every aspect of the game due to the engine upgrade, so please also test some planetary missions and things like the weapon workshop and report if anything is not working. Happy testing! Cheers, Stray Fawn Studio Here is how you can get the preview build on steam: – Open your Steam library– Right click on Nimbatus in the Steam library– Select Properties / Beta– Select the Beta tab– Select the Preview branch from the drop down – Restart Steam in case the game does not update automatically4 points

Imagine you start in the summer mountains and they live forever and ever. I've had patches that produce 4 dodomingos by night until they're up to 8 in the area. No more permanent nests again. Or nichelings that always have to sit in nests. What a job. It'd be funny to swap all livespans, though. Nearly Immortal dodmingos and rogue males, balance bears that die in a few swipes and nightmare ramfoxes. Tame apes and terrorizing normal bearyenas (with a lot more attack). Killer bearyenas being reduced to bunills, blue birds that die in a day.4 points

The Savanna biomes are still pretty bare, so adding a couple more creatures to them would be nice. I had an idea for one, the Bullhog. Looks: A creature that is a cross between a bull and a warthog. It would be about half the size of a medium bodied creature, look like a warthog, and has very large horns of a bull. It can spawn either light brown or dark brown. Spawns: In a packs of 2–3 in a large savanna biome. Characteristics: Are neutral until you attack them, then the whole pack will go after you if you get too close and skip the day. Feed on roots and will wander out of the savannah for brief periods of time to look for roots for none are around. Attack, Movement, and Health: They attack for 3 days worth of damage. Have a 25 day life span. They have 2 energy points and use them when you skip the day. Stats: Eyesight: 1 Smelling: 3 Hearing: 2 Food drop: They drop 6–10 pieces of food when they are killed.3 points

I was laughing the hole entire time after I read, 'Every male is my cousin or a loser' 10/10 story.3 points

Is it currently planned to make the lifespans and stats of non nichelings customizable? It would be cool for a "even deadlier apes challenge" or to ENHANCE THE GREAT DODOMINGO SO HE CAN DESTROY THE WORLD!3 points

Well, that's changed. Howdy. My name's based off of my OC, Melon, who sadly passed away in-game a couple Nicheling days ago, but I'll make a new Melon to use as my profile pic.2 points

so ive seen people making "nichesonas" so im gonna make one. the obvious ones I can think of are: blue eyes (I have blue eyes, sometimes light blue, sometimes dark blue. its weird.) some sort of yellow in there (my favourite colour) so I did some thinking, and this is what I've got: here I am! ill explain everything: round ears because I just liked them lol antennae because I am really smart (like, the smartest in my year group. yeah im one of those nerds who never studies but ends up with the best scores. its weird) and they just seem to be quite associated with like, wisdom n' stuff? saber tooth fangs because I have really big canines and my teeth are just deformed af (im getting braces when I turn 13 in june and I think theyre just gonna randomly take some out and hope then the braces will put them all in line properly) honestly I think the derp snout would make more sense for my mouth lmao I already explained blue eyes and yellow fur, but I just like the panda mask and the white pattern big body cause im fat tailfin because I like beaches and stuff (I used to love swimming but not really anymore) and when I was little I loved mermaids. and I live like right on the coast so yeah recessive shortsighted because somehow against all odds I have perfect eyes (like seriously, both my parents have bad eyesight) nimble finger cause you will never spot me sitting still. I will always be fiddling with my hands and it even annoys me mammut foot because for some reason when I walk it sounds like i stomp angrily everywhere immunity gc because that's my initials2 points

I was thinking that too... but God stopped on the seventh day, which would make more sense if Sunday was the last day of the week... Here's some stuff I found: As the first day of the week varies in different cultures, so does the weekend. The Christian or Western world marks Sunday as their day of rest and worship, while Muslims refer to Friday as their day of rest and prayer. The Jewish calendar counts Saturday – the Sabbath – as the day of rest and worship. As with so many things passed down to us from antiquity, religion is the reason the calendar week starts (for many of us) on Sunday. The first day of the week (for most), Sunday has been set aside as the "day of the sun" since ancient Egyptian times in honor of the sun-god, beginning with Ra.2 points

Sunday is the last day cause god stopped and took a rest on that day. At least according to christians2 points

its the next day after school and that means update time! redwood walks to her sisters side and they giggle about this strange creature, but they dont think he's that bad. they decide to go over to him and talk to him, occasionally giggling to each other about certain strange words he says to flamethorn. "thoust fools! thou thinkst that I am a joketh! you- I mean thou- will be weeping on the floor when I show thine my rabbit hunting professionalism-eth! cower in fear, fools!" the fiery red- maned nicheling jumped over to a rabbil nearby and killed it, somewhat impressing flamethorn, as she started to love this strange person and the way he spoke. flamethorn walked over to oakblaze and spoke to him, trying to copy his speaking as redwood giggled in the background "nice-ou! thine own hunting profeshinalisum-ith is ama-eth-zing-eth!" oakblaze stared at her, with no idea of the words that just came out of her mouth. "look, just talk normally, you dont need to impress me" he replied under his breath, trying to hide that he spoke normally for once "oh, ok then. honestly, I think you're pretty cool. I wouldn't mind having a child. every other male in the tribe is either my cousin or a loser" "splendid!" he spoke "the fair maiden flamethorn has accepted to be my mate! we shall produce the most powerful offspring on this island! cower in fear, worms!" the two prepared for a child, and the tribe was happy to see new life coming to the family. it was the next day, and flamethorn went to settle down in a nest to have her first child in the nest raincloud loved to maintain. "this nest musteth been created by a fool! who is thine raincloud, this incompetent worm?" oakblaze bellowed proudly. the whole tribe stared at him angrily. flamethorn was in shock at his remark about her friend. "ill show you who she is- raincloud! I need you to help me!" raincloud awoke. her nest! the nest that had been maintained for generations! the nest she was born in! she ran to the nest, shocked to see a heavily pregnant flamethorn inside of it, with a shocked oakblaze who stared as she quickly patched up the nest and placed a pink flower on it to finish it off. "that's who raincloud is. only the best nest builder on the island!" oakblaze seemed embarrassed, so everyone decided it would be for the best to leave him for the day, as he and his mate prepared for a child to be born. redwood and bloodmoon left together, to give room for the baby, and they ended up talking for a while. "how do you just- you know- kill rabbils that easily? surely they slip away?" redwood asked. "how do you dig up roots so easily?" bloodmoon answered. they both giggled, finding eachother and their faults quite funny. they talked for ages, until this came up: "I guess if we had a kid, it could dig and hunt easily. now THAT would be cool." "wait, you want a kid? I kind of do too. I have no children, but everyone thinks that me having nightheart's kids meant I would never have any more children.." "I mean, I have no use in breeding, mostly because my siblings are far more skilled, but maybe I could have a child... with you?" they spent a lot of time walking together, until they found themselves leaving the tribe borders, and they decided to leave and start a family the next day. on the other side of the island, cloudmeadow and maplestar found themselves preparing for their next child. hazelbreeze was eagerly exploring his home, and his great grandparent's home, and sniffing the air around him eagerly, like nightheart did when she was born. he seemed quite eager to explore, like his grandmother who was born here, and his parents laughed. if nightheart moved the tribe to the tree with widowstar and thornwhisper, maybe hazelbreeze would move the tribe from one island to another. they would have to leave eventually, they thought. in the morning, flamethorn introduced everyone to the new baby, who was named willowtail. she seemed quite curious about the acorns, which confused flamethorn, but oakheart comforted his mate: "do not fear, my precious rose, our dear child is as fineth as could be. she has the cracker jaw, like my mother did. she will grow up strong, and live a fulfilling life of acorns and roots. look how adorable our dear willowtail is! there could never be anything wrong with her." this eased flamethorn's mind, and raincloud left to tell her sister the news. when she got back to her home she found a small baby at cloudmeadow's feet. "hi raincloud! meet our new baby- greysky! isn't she just the cutest?" "aww, she definitely is!" the rest of the day was food gathering, except for bloodmoon and redwood, who wandered off into the grasses to finally start their family. they were looking for a nest when they found a wanderer. "where is he?" the blind creature asked. "where is dad?" "where is sprucespike?"2 points

Yarr! I thought it could help to make a thread where we share our observations about the new parts I'll detail more as I get my feet wet, but here are some of my initial thoughts so far: VTOL thrusters: -Good: My new favorite part. Drones will be faster, more responsive, smaller, and smarter. -Bad: Doubly so for sumo spinners. Proximity sensors: -Good: Huge potential. Fully automated spin-free are now turrets within reach. Terrain avoidance is easier. Better formations. Smarter drones. -Bad: The lack of range is prohibitive. Afterburners -Good: High speed shenanigans. Could be weaponized with future tweaks to collision damage -Bad: Jump thrusters can mitigate the minimum speed requirement pretty easily, making that feature seem kind of pointless. -Possibly bad: spinners can spin REALLY fast now. That's as far as I've gotten so far. Thanks for the new toys!1 point

I was assigned Summer Mountains as a random island. These starters aren't great, but she is just so cute and they have double fluffy tail+ purrsnout. Great island layout, though. Settling down goes well, until... But there's a healing plant. So it doesn't really matter. The all male curse. But my first wanderer has recessive poison fangs, so that's a very luck round so far. Save for the constant assault. But hey, free genes!1 point

Same. At my old school I was in all the advanced classes with like 5 or 6 other kids in a school with a lot of *cough cough dumb cough cough* not as smart kids.1 point

I mean I didn't come up with oakheart's personality from rouxls kaard (it was actually more arthur from cattails), but by the time he said "this incompetent worm" I had accepted the fact I had subconsciously created a rouxls kaard nicheling, so I just went with it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯1 point

The enabler lies with the propulsion. When the head pulls on the body, the body distorts because of the interaction of mass and force. So long as a directional force can use less energy to alter a part's orientation than it would use to alter the position, then that applied force will always alter a part's orientation first. If the body was mass-less, it would be impossible for a force to alter it's shape. So I concluded that the greater the difference between the mass of a fluid object and the force applied to it, the more the object will distend and I fooled around with a bunch of different thrust settings. It failed completely. But. I noticed that while pulling on a curved semi-fluid object reduces the curve, pushing it causes the curve to increase. Apply a pull to the top of the curve and a push at the bottom and you get a collapse at the top and a ballooning at the bottom. So. I thought if I could apply a simultaneous push and pull throughout the entire structure of the curve equally, the curve wouldn't collapse. I tested this by building a drone with segments that each contain identical amounts of thrust, causing the collective mass to resist a constant amount of pull and push. Hopefully, so long as the forces remain equal, when the craft turned the curve would be unable to collapse. Evidently, it worked. Further proof of evidence is the way the curve still collapsed near the tail; there was no longer enough push behind the curve to maintain it. I might be able to stabilize it some by adding more thrust at the very end, but in order for my conclusion to be correct, the curve near the last segment must collapse. I bear little hope the design will prove useful for anything practical, but it's really cool to watch. SCIENCE!!!!1 point

This is so weird. I mean you are in general aware of cultural differences but there are some small things you'd never think about were different in other countries. It seems so strange to me to start the week on sunday, it makes no sense. I mean work starts on monday, school starts on monday, stores open on monday. All of these things don't happen on sundays, why start the week on a sunday? (I get that it is a cultural difference and stuff but I just wonder ).1 point

I'm pretty sure it's during late February that this update is going to be released but I don't think there's an exact time? Just around that time vicinity. Unsure about the test branch tho I think the Nicheling life span affects every Nicheling, including wanderers, because if it didn't, say you'd find a wanderer you actually like with good genes. Imagine them only living for 20 days and then your creatures living for 60 ;o; And for the rouge male thing, I'm sure there will be an option to alter that and make it so they don't live that long EDIT: Here's a link to the Development WIP where you can keep track of updates and their releases1 point

I should add that it will reduce the punishment inherent in making smart drones for autonomous, competitive challenges, to require fewer sensors.1 point

I had Yay destroy a cactus and it scared me for a moment that she wasn't taking damage until I remembered she has Armored body lol a couple Dies are born because they have Wing. Thus, all of Meadow and Brownie's children are Dies except for Yay. Queen Joi, seeing that there are no compatible mates, takes on Thron as her mate, though she refuses to make him king. Queen Joi dies, but not before leaving behind an heir named Queen Izra. now two best friends who have only ever destroyed bushes have to raise a Queen! This child will definitely be a little wild annnd Queen Izra is taken by the Bluebird WHOOPS. The Family tree is remembered, and they realize that the children of Meadow and Goldenrod are descendants of King Burd and Queen Armored Lady, so their oldest child becomes Queen. Thus, long live Queen WHY SO MUCH YELLOW! Goldenchild gives birth to this stripey boi Goldenchild said goodbye to the world as she gives birth to a son named Keir. Yellow, now a single father, watches over his sons, making sure they don't get the same fate as the late Queen Izra. Poppy gets a leech, bleeds, and is eaten by that red fish, i don't remember what it's called so RIP the Dies Meadow dies. Now that a creature in a breeding pair has died, the tribe starts organizing their next group of breeding pairs. body will have kids yet, though. Queen WHY SO MUCH YELLOW (Q WSMY) and WHAT ABOUT ANY OTHER COLOR (WAAOC) are paired up. Keir and Yay are paired up. At Least She's Not 100% Yellow and Yellow are put into 'waiting mode'; they will wait until their appropriate mates are born. Meadow and then Qwerty die off. The breeding pairs prepare their nests for their incoming children. da children (born every other day) 400 food! impregnated by rogue male :T look who we found! mate for ALSNOHPY. annd OOPS yay and keir share an immunity gene WHOOPSIE making that mistake since the birth of Meringue and wow I just misspelled mistake and wow I misspelled misspelled twice but I fixed them all haha so she becomes a Die (Meringue doesn't try and fight ppl who kill sick creatures bc that stuff is in Annini's paws) Yay has another child with Keir (despite the risk of another sick kid) on her last day. WANOC dies. Oz is reincarnated (he's also the guy who impregnated ALSNOHPY) as a Rogue Male (who suspiciously looks like the rogue male mate of Anaanala) this is his kid this is last kid of the Queen. She is made Queen Cool Mask. oh and this was last child of Yay and Keir Platyfowl is impregnated by oz but she sends him back to Tyni in one hit. ALSNOHPY and Nizain have a SCORPION TAILED KID WOOAH he actually has pretty good genes1 point

We are getting to modify nicheling lifespans and damage multipliers, so why not apes, bearyenas, bears, crabbits, walrushdeer, dodomingos and other things as well? If not the others, then at least bearyenas, because they have multiple lifestages and they're closely related to nichelings!🐻1 point
-
As others have said, -2 vision is pretty onerous unless nichelings can navigate by other senses. As things stand that would mean a completely wasted day. And actually... in a thunderstorm, you're safer when you're NEAR a tree. You're in the most danger when you're part of the shortest path between the sky and the ground. There could be penalties for standing out in the open, perching on trees and stumps, and/or being at higher elevations than your surroundings, but you should actually benefit from being UNDER a tree's branches. Hail is a bit rough, but perhaps a fair portrayal of truly harsh conditions. As an additional weather type, what about Strong Winds? It could either shift the region all animals smell to one side, or simply decrease their smell range by 1.1 point
