  3. The best thing about this being the week the update comes out (hopefully!) is that this is the last week of my second trimester of school, so we get Friday off! I'll have more time to play the new update

  5. Yes, I think the art will be amazing :D! We have a new artist for the project, Stephanie Stutz. This is her website: https://www.artstation.com/stephaniestutz We have known each other for 15 years now (met her back when I was in school) and we always wanted to make a game together, so I'm super excitet to work with her ^^ She also made the intro video with Adam for Niche and all the promo pictures for Niche (like the one with the flying cat and the one with the Panda Nicheling). That and @Markus will be doing 2d animation for the game. I'm really looking forward to what it will look like! Now I just have to give my best to make it fun, since I'm the game designer

  11. I read about this in the suggestion thread as well and agreed that it should be fixed. I have never noticed it happening in game because I don't look to closely at how it is passed down but I have seen multiple screenshots where it shows that it is a little wonky. I think the problem is: (mainly explained for @Skysplash8 ) that the hemophilia in game isn't that well linked to the gender as it is in real life (epxlained below). Hemophilia is a recessive gene that is linked to the x chromosome (females have xx males have xy). That are the chromosomes that define the gender. Now if the mother has double hemophilia, Father is healthy: that would make all the daughters healthy (but still a carrier as they get the healthy x chromosome from their father and one sick chromosome from their mother), the boys however will always be sick as they will get the y chromosome from the father and the x chromosome from the mother. Here we now can look at the screenshots provided above: the girls are carriers as they should be but the boys are healthy though they should be sick as they get the y from the father (which carries no genetic information apart from the gender and the sicks x from the mother): If both parents are sick of course the children would always be sick. If the mother is healthy and the father is sick the daughters will always be healthy (but carriers (they will always get one sick x from the father) and the sons will always be healthy without being carriers as they only get the y chromosome from the father. If the mother is a carrier and the father is sick the girls have a 50% chance to end up sick (getting the sick x from the father and the sick from the mother). The same goes for the boys as they can only get the y from the father and it is luck if they end up with the sick or the healthy x. If the mother is a carrier and the father is healthy there is a 50% chance that the girls will be carriers. Does that make sense? (Philo probably knows this but I thought I'd explain it anyway )

  15. Dear Niche Devs, Thank you for making this adorable, innovative, and imaginative genetics game! As someone interested in genetics, I think it's great that you created this very simple genetics game to show how simple genetics works in a fun setting. Hemophilia and Normal clotting are the only X-linked genetics in Niche. Hemophilia is passed down from father to daughter or from mother to offspring. In the 1.1.4 version, I have encountered females with hemophilia (they have two copies of the gene). They should pass down their hemophilia to their daughters (who will become carriers) and their hemophilic sons. The bug that I'm reporting makes it so that the males do not inherit the hemophilia, and instead have normal blood clotting, which seemingly comes out of nowhere! While this may be beneficial for players who want to weed out this detrimental gene, it doesn't accurately show how hemophilia is inherited, or how X-linked genes work. I hope you will fix this bug and perhaps add other X-linked genes like colour-blindness affecting Nicheling stats somehow, or other non-Mendelian traits. Here are some pictures of the hemophilic female (a wanderer), her son and daughters with hemophilia selected in the family tree. Cheers, Robb P.S. - I didn't mutate for normal blood clotting in the hemophilic female in the Mutation Menu.

  20. Yeah, Retimed isn't our third game We help them with marketing and work in the same office. The new game doesn't have a name yet. The plan is to make a building simulation game where you build up a settlement on the back of a huge animal that walks around. But it's also still possible that we find out the concept doesn't work and do something else ^^

  21. so I was just messing around making a story mode savefile and I just had a child born who is seriously the most gorgeous nicheling ive ever had. shes called lala, and has only been born a few in-game days ago, but I love her already. I might use her for roleplays in the roleplay section, and have her have sort of "if youre not beautiful youre not worth my time!" attitude. ive been looking for a goddess of beauty, and she is definitely fit for the role. does anyone else have any goddesses of beauty? I know about berri but im curious to see if anyone else has one

  22. Hey folks ^^ I wanted to let you know that I will be giving a talk about you at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco in March To be more specific, the talk is about why forums are great place for community management of indie games. I wasn't sure this is true when we started the forums a few months back, but you have proven that it definitely is! https://schedule.gdconf.com/session/game-discoverability-day-why-forums-can-be-great-for-indie-community-and-discoverability/864844

  26. Not exactly the same thing. This is more about bringing a sense of progress to the player's capabilities. The 'sweet spot' in gaming is usually about hitting a sacred balance between increasing skill, capability, and/or control, against an increasing challenge. If a player perceives their capability as high, perceives the challenge as high, lacks distractions, and feels they have control over events, that's where the magic happens. Progression is all about the increasing capability side of the equation. Right now, the player just gets every tool all at once, and can go over-the-top to dominate most missions from the start just by adding more of everything. What we want is to start the player off with limited capability and limited challenge. We want all of the giveaways to be rewarding unlocks, without subjecting the player to a crushing grind. That way rising challenge can be met by rising capability, and the current content (everything unlocked, unlimited drone size) can be more like endgame content, with matching challenges to face an endgame player.

  38. I think it would be cool to add a new game mode that makes things a bit more challenging. In this game mode the game starts with a tribe of animals (maybe around 5 or so). Things are peaceful for a short time and then the earth starts shaking. The island you are living on is slowly falling apart. Your tribe needs to reach the next island exit as fast as possible! And this is how it keeps being from now on. Every island you enter will fall apart after some time, so run for your lives! You only have a short amout of time to gather up resources before heading to a harder island. This adds an interesting time restriction to the game which makes every single decision more important. Maybe this could even be a story thing, like Adam's story. With a small intro and an end goal: Reach Paradise Island. An island full of food and where earth quakes can't reach you.

  43. The flying squala is a combination between a flying squirrel🐿️ and a drop bear🐨(a kind of koala). It is mostly koala shaped with the tail and wing membrane of a squirrel and claws and fangs, Its color is red-brown fading to gray towards the face and ends of limbs. It can be found in the savannah on medium and harder islands. Its abilities are: 1 movement, 6 flying, 1 collecting, 2 strength, 1 defense, 4 eyesight, 2 smelling, 2 camouflage(in savannah), poison resistance, 5 heat resistance It lives for 20 days and drops 10 food It spawns in acacia trees🌳 where it spends most of its time, using its 1 collecting to collect the nuts. If it senses a creature of any type coming under its tree it will leap on their head, stunning then just like a coconut does(except bunnies🐇, which are killed instantly). It will remain latched on their head, hitting them each time you make a move, just like the razorana🐟. To remove it simply attack it, which will cause it to run back in its tree. However because it has 1 defense you need at least 2 strength to attack it, which is not so easy with the lean body. If the tree it came from is already occupied(by a winged nicheling for example) the squala will have to go on a ground tile instead. While on the ground it is not capable of attacking, making it an easy target. When on the ground it will try to make its way to the nearest empty tree. Now you might be wondering where does the 6 flying come into effect, since it one needs 1 to get back into the tree. During the night it may chose to fly to a nearby tree. It does not have to be fully in range, it will walk the rest of the way but if you catch it off guard its easy to kill. It cannot fly during the day, except to hop back to its tree, which it needs to be adjacent to. It can only use its leap attack after spending a night in the tree so if it just arrived by flying or was just removed from a creature it cannot immediately attack again. Because being in a tree gives +2 sight you need all the camouflage boosts as well as the scentless from lean body to avoind being detected. Or either distasteful scent or appearance(only 1 needed, not both). If a creature has 2 defense it will not be stunned. The squala will remain attached if the host moves. If you use a flying nicheling to attack the squala while its in the tree it will hit back each time you attack it. Also if a berry bush spawns under a tree the squala can collect from it but it will not get out of the tree to look for them. On mixed islands(grass mingle) it can move into non acacia trees🌴 and can collect snails🐌 and toxic berries.

  46. just a top tip for generally anything you see that someone has made on the internet: if you don't like it, give criticism. people that create things will 100% of the time appreciate you telling them what to improve upon, because they may have not realised that themselves, and will be thankful once they improve that thing you pointed out and realised how much better it looks. just dont say "this is so bad" or "I hate this" because that's not really helping anyone. sorry for the paragraph-long life lesson, I just thought this is important to know, youre probably older than me lol
