  2. I've been looking at the forums ever since I got Niche and with the new update, I finally decided to join. So hi!

  3. Hello! I've been playing Niche since the steam release, and It's my go-to relax while I drink my morning coffee game. I also make ceramics as a hobby, and I recently decided to try sculpting one of my nichelings just because the combinations of colors and features are endless (I've always thought the nicheling models would be perfect for 3D printing or other 3D media). It was quite the challenge, but I'm pleased with the results! The nicheling itself is about an inch tall, and I put in on a leaf to make a dish for jewelry or small items.

  5. I'm taking a short break from Repopulation challenge to do a more RP minded playthrough. This is called royal bloodlines, and centers around a clan of survivors led by a noble bloodline of great leaders. It has loose links to the random name and the pattern challenge, but the rules are very fluid. Lifespans are set to 2 baby 7 child 14 teen 100 adult (mama didn't raise no quitter) Our starters are: Lord Red Velvet - the high and mighty male ruler of the clan. He's got a bit of a hunter in him and will take a simple kill even though he's not supposed to, being king and all. He wants to do well for his clan but thinks the best way to do that is through firm leadership and strict accordance with tradition. Lady Cheesecake - Lord Velvet's even tempered queen. She prides herself in a flawless work ethic and patient understanding. She listens to her packmates and tries to understand and address their worries. She doesn't like how her husband occasionally mistreats their clanmates. Huntree Alfajor - Active, energetic huntress Alfajor. She lives for the hunt and she's excellent at it. Her catches are always flawless and prey rarely sees her coming thanks to her lovely stripes and coat color. Farmer Apas - Humble, quiet farmer, Apas has a way with plants that is unrivaled except by his fellow farmer, Bredela. Though he has a very funny looking face, nobody can deny that he gets results. Healer Biscotti - Purr-snout faced Biscotti, a brave and curious healer. She can also run the fastest in the whole clan, ideal for getting to clanmmates that need aid. She treasures her purring power and prays she never has to use it. Farmer Bredela - Not related to Farmer Apas, though they look very similar. Bredela enjoys her work, though she always dreams about what life would have been like if she had been born with different genes. Another funny looking face, but nobody complains when their paws get sore and Biscotti uses roots (that Bredela digs up) to soothe their pain. Warrior Ballokume - Ballokume is unique, and the strongest non-royal in the clan. Though not very fast, nobody can deny his great strength and strong desire to protect the clan. he has a crush on Alfajor, but can't seem to work up the courage to tell her.

  6. Cliff islands will of course have high plateaus here and there in an otherwise normal grassland looking biome (or a perhaps a scrubland biome.) The tiles will be tall, similar to the ones at the edge of savanna islands that sink into the water. On the tiles on the cliff face there will be the usual regular and poisonous berry bushes, and perhaps a new kind of plant/animal that can be found only on cliffs. At the top of these cliffs will be flat spaces that have the same things the ground does; acorn trees, berries, termite mounds, nests, etc. I think these islands will offer something different to see, and won't just be the usual flat or rising slope islands. I was also thinking that maybe nichelings would need specific genes to climb these cliff faces, so hooved hind legs would be the best gene to do this in my opinion: Found a similar suggestion from last year

  8. Rules: You may start with anything you like but a max of 5 nichelings to start (in sandbox ) . 1 - 3 Immunity genes and each nicheling MUST have at least 1 bad gene ( low fertility, Blind eyes, e.t.c ). Get to 1000 nichelings in under 500 days. those are the rules have fun! my challenge world.. (I'm not done yet )

  9. This is a challenge based on the lifestyle of a grey wolf. Requirements Create or have the game generate your breeding pair. They should be set to alpha. They are the only two who can breed. Start on whatever island you like. Only permanent nests. Wolves often spend an entire season at their den, so it can't be temporary. Set age to whatever you like and/or prefer. I recommend setting child to be much longer than usual, this challenge becomes very hard otherwise. How to play: Your breeding pair are the only ones who can breed. Breed your breeding pair. This child or children becomes your first litter. Any other pups born before the first pup becomes a teen is also part of this litter. Any pups born after your first pup becomes a teen is the second litter. Once all the pups of your first litter reach adult, choose one to 'disperse' to somewhere else. They either leave the island or on very large maps (i.e archipelago) they must establish a different territory away from their birth home. Your dispersal nicheling should then locate a mate, and they become the next breeding pair. Good luck!

  10. Sure dragons are mythological creatures. So maybe it'd be better to call it a Flying Dinosaur Biome as there's no fire breathing... but the word dragon just makes it sound more appealing. The Dragon Biome is a mixture of Jungle, Swamp, Grassland, and possibly Mountain (without the snow... maybe its a volcanic mountain). There could potentially be a river of lava and/or a tar pit which spreads during certain weather and recedes afterward. However, nichlings can somehow be rescued from these situations by another nichling with some sort of interaction maybe just one called 'pull out' in place of a lick or a warm up. However, while stuck in lava or unable to escape a tar pit their life will be slowly drained away... more so with the lava as that would be a quicker death than a tar pit. Pitahaya's and bananas grow here. Both are fruits. Bat Wings are more likely to spawn here. Possible Genes that can only be found in Dragon Jungle Biome 1. Dome Head (like a dome head dinosaur. A type of head where a coconut can't stun/hurt them.) 2. Tri-horn (goes into horn slot and has three horns like that of a triceratops. Extra strength to hunt and defend.) 3. Spike tail (like a stegasaurus or gigantospinosaurus. Extra strength to hunt and defend.) 4. Raptor Head (Similar to a velociraptor. Has extra strength to hunt with) 5. Prehensile Tail (to gather fruit with) 6. Frill Head (Like a Frilled Lizard. Able to collect bugs.)

  11. Yesterday on my way home I encountered THIS. I've never seen a fire salamander before, they are pretty rare in my country (Switzerland). Though I probably would have prefered to encouter one in a less awkward situation

  13. So I thought of this challenge as I was watching Tarzan lol but basically its all based on the social structure that primates have in the wild so its not really a challenge but I like it. I love social structure challenges and I would love to see more challenges based on them. Personally I really like the Orca Social Structure and The Hyena Social Structure, pretty cool to look up and read about. So on to the challenge Requirements: Use sandbox mode to create 1 strong and older male along with 2-4 younger and healthy females all with different immunities (when i create my Nichelings i always like to think of their personalities beforehand or in the process of, but only for role play purposes, you can do whatever you'd like) Start on whatever island of your choosing but, like gorillas, you have to be moving constantly No permanent nests A "troop" (group of gorillas) consists of 2 to 30 members so set tribe size limit to 30 unless you would like to have more than one troop. (I usually do) Baby setting to 2 Child setting to 3 Teen setting to 6 Adult setting to 24 Rogues can be turned off if you'd like an easier challenge Males must have at least two females as mates to create a new troop Gameplay Males The Alpha male is named the Silverback, he is the strongest and oldest of the males, and only he can breed with females. His tasks are: taking decisions, resolve conflicts, defend the group against the enemies, produce offspring, find new sites to feed, define the home area, and so on. All other males whether adult or teens are called Blackbacks. Blackbacks can separate from their birth troop to begin a "Bachelor group" and go off in search of females to start a new troop. Blackbacks can also challenge the Silverback to become the new alpha. (I decide this with a number generator from 1-10, if the number is below 5 then the Blackback loses, if the number is above 6 the Blackback wins) You can decide what to do with the loser, whether you wish to banish him or kill him. Once the Silverback dies, either of old age or wounds, all Blackbacks will compete to become the new Silverback. Make the strongest Blackbacks fight each other and decide who wins with the same number generator as mentioned above. Males protect females and the offspring of the group Wandering males are not welcomed by the Silverback but they can potentially sway a female into creating a new troop Females Breeding females organize in a hierarchy, according to the time in which they joined the troop. Therefore, the first arriving has a higher status than newcomers, and so on. Adult females are usually not related to each other, and it is common to compete to be near the leader, as this provides further protection to them and their offspring. Wandering females can be welcomed into the tribe Tips and Notes: Please suggest anything that could be added or modified. Also, feel free to change anything, its your play through after all. I love to have more than two troops, whether it be they are rivals or for the simple fact that i need new immunities. I have tried this challenge and its pretty fun if you're into roleplaying. Hope you guys have fun with it also. If you have any questions feel free to ask

  15. Sweet. This would work very well with the horn growth suggestion as well (to lazy to look for the link but it basically has baby Nichelings grow their horns over time instead of instantly)

  19. Some of ya'll bout to be real mad at me, but it must be said. Camels are so underrated! They have so many unique adaptions and look so cool (especially bacterian camels), to me at least. And they can come in quite a bit of colors, which people don't usually realize. In conclusion, they're great. But anyway I was thinking of some new genes the other day and I came up with two, one of them being a camel hump/camel body. I call it the Hump Body but there might be a better name for it. What the hump body does is store fat in it's hump by gathering food (like camels) which eventually gets full. A hump body nicheling will get 1 day's worth of fat stores for every 2 days (maybe longer or shorter depending on creature's longevity) the tribe is fully fed. From there they can use these stores as food for however many days their hump allows them, while simultaneously gathering food for the tribe. (Credit to @Pokestardragacraft and @BirdsAreCool for improving on this ability!) Your nicheling will be able to choose when they start using their stored fat. What I mean is if they have say, 2 days worth of fat, from there they can live off of it for two days and don't have to wait to get a full hump. I believe camels can control how they use up their fat so this would be pretty useful. Stats: +1 Heat resistance +1/2 Food Storing/ Fat Storing (this skill could probably be the same skill given to other food "storing" genes: https://strayfawnstudio.com/community/index.php?/topic/3737-cheek-pouches/#comment-17229 https://strayfawnstudio.com/community/index.php?/topic/2135-new-tail-blubber-tail/ https://strayfawnstudio.com/community/index.php?/topic/4170-leopard-gecko-tail/ Maybe Hump Body can be unlocked by having a certain amount of nichelings starve? Or maybe having to collect an x amount of times and spend an x amount of time in a savanna. Edited some screenshots to give an idea of how it could look in game:

  21. This isn't really important but it would be cool if melanistic nichelings had really faint stripes/spots/etc like they do in real life

  23. This is the closest we've gotten to a melanistic zebra (this one like you said has pseudo-melanism) He looks like a little okapi!

  24. This would be so nice. Maybe randomization of how faint the pattern is like the randomization of the toxic body colors... so some are so faint its hardly noticible and some it's a bit more noticeable. Like an opacity of 5% to 30%.

  29. Merchandise was a thing, but only as a kickstarter reward. The available options were some nicheling figurines and some fuzzy ears I think? Stray Fawn probably doesn’t have merchandise within their budget, but if it happened one day that’d seriously be the best.

  33. SO! I'm playing with one of my Tribes and we are currently in the Summer Mountains. Basically my creatures have been getting cold, and getting reduced moves as usual. But when I get a notification that their frozen (or should be frozen) their not! Just wanted to let you guys know but that's really the only issue I've had with the update thus far. Keep up the good work!

  34. Drawing of one of my favorite Nichelings in my longest save file. Her name is Anamere and you can see her on my profile in the background picture, next to her now-grown son Tavankir, who I'm also very fond of. I love Bearyena genes because they make my Nichelings look like hyenas, which I love.

  35. If you breed with a male before setting up his menu, the child won't mutate anything. Females can be set up any time.

  37. Lol. Love knows no boundaries. Or that is the frogs/ toads mighty steed. I saw a fox very recently while walking my dog. That was pretty cool. Funnily enough my dog (who has a pretty high hunting urge) didn't see the fox at all ^^ And a few years back two male deer chased each other around the forest, right in front of me. They came by three times in a row. That was super cool! (Again while walking the dog but I put the leash on her before anything could happen)

  38. Well maybe new genes should be added to things like the head to increase gathering like a deer head (like +2 gathering)

  39. Thanks! I didn't think of it as a forelimb gene because you'd most likely need two hooves to get enough climbing ability, like how two wings give you flying. I guess they would be useful with digging and cracking, but they wouldn't be able to help the nicheling collect plants off the cliffs. Also I don't think they would take damage. If hooves aren't implemented then any nicheling with normal/bearyena hind legs can climb them. But if they added hooves too then they must have hooves. Perhaps hooves could be unlocked by attempting to climb cliffs.
    1 point
  40. I think this is a great idea because like with the sticky tongue you make a good reason for this gene. Though I think forelimb hooves should be added to make things more interesting. Though I'm wondering could you fall of these cliffs and if you do does the nicheling receive damage from it?
    1 point
  41. Maybe on savannah, grassland and mountain islands if an albino nicheling isn't either under a tree or in tall grass and it isnt raining when you skip a turn it takes a day of damage. As @bostonlobstah said, a nicheling can have great heat resistance and still suffur from poor UV ray protection

(When I can, I'll give them Big Ears, too) These creatures, when paired with a normal-sighted one, will be able to smell and hear food and predators! Welcome little Lara to the Scouting line! Woah, I didn't realize Bluebirds were that big in comparison to Nichelings until now... (also, I have no idea whose bones those are) TO BE CONTINUED after I eat lunch

  47. Woah woah woah, excuse me? Where did you come from?? Look! We unlocked Ram Horns and Claw while on the third island! Those totally aren't the bones of the murdered Rota on the flower port Goodbye, island! Goodbye, Reanais! Hello, new island! Woah there, calm down with those 'ana's! Cleopatra and her daughter Lali went across a river, killed a Bearyena, tamed it's cub, then went back across so Cleopatra could have her final child. As the baby was born the Friendly Bearyena crossed the river to visit little Duyusiimi. Sii my joke? 😛 Tribe so far! And we're just over 200 food! That meat by Cleopatra is totally not the Friendly Bearyena's and I totally didn't kill him because I want even more food

  48. The tribe seems to like having power. A female with unsavory genes appeared, and the tribe took out their wrath on her (I made sure to only attack with Big-Bodied creatures so their defense would protect them from the Spiky Body). An Empress is born! Not in the eyes of the tribe, but in her name. Isi has fallen in love with the resident Friendly Bearyena... ...and had a child with him! Current tribe. TO BE CONTINUED
