  5. "HELP!" The flames seared her pelt, heat radiating so strongly it felt like her face was melting off. The smoke filled her lungs, and she coughed violently. She couldn't find an exit. The fire was surrounding her, blocking her path, making sure she wouldn't escape. It was closing in, and she was starting to feel lightheaded. She couldn't breathe. Feeling her legs buckle, she collapsed on the ground, lying limply in the ash. This was it. She was going to die. She just wished she had told her parents she didn't actually hate them, despite what she had said earlier. Suddenly, the heat wasn't there anymore. She could hear the fire crackling in the distance, the sound getting harder to hear by the second. After a few heartbeats, her head stopped spinning, and she felt dry grass slowly rise up to cradle her body. It was comfortable, calm. She felt...better. Slowly opening her eyes, she blinked up at the strange figure staring intently downwards. Once her eyes adjusted, the first thing she noticed were horns. Ram horns that flared a brighter red than the fire she had been in just moments before. Next, she caught green eyes. They widened a bit when they saw she wasn't dead, and a sigh of relief echoed in her ears. Finally completely coming to, she really noticed the nicheling that saved her. It wasn't anyone she had ever seen before, a female with pale yellow, almost beige fur-and long, sharp fangs that glistened in the sunset. "Thank Creation, you're not dead! I didn't almost burn my tail off for nothing!" "Wh..." "Can you stand up?" Still strangely unaware of her surroundings, she stood up on shaky legs, almost tumbling over before the other leaned her against her shoulder. "You okay?" She nodded, looking around the field. The ground here was faintly covered in ashes, implicating that a fire had been in that area not long ago. "Good, I'll get you home. I'm Drizzle, by the way-you?" Feeling Drizzle's intense stare, she blinked, finally finding her voice. "P...Peppermint Bark." Drizzle chuckled, guiding her around a large boulder that blocked their path. "That's a mouthful-mind if I call you Pep?" (Peppermint Bark is Pine and Moth's daughter, she ran into the fire by accident after storming out when she had an argument with her parents)

  8. We have berries, nuts, roots, and other plant foods, why not fruits? Maybe make something like a pearch (Pear + peach), more soft fruits, some sort of apple, and others! These would work like nuts, but instead of staying when they fall, they would go bad when they fall, making you need to have certain abilities to get the fruits. This would work good with our avian and bat genetics, as well as the highly suggested climbing genetics. Feel free to suggest other things to add on! this idea is from my little sister, she said she would like to see fruits in niche so I made this suggestion!

  9. The idea is simple: You find a wanderer you think looks cool. Put them here, and once we have enough, we shall see if they are the coolest. RULES: - Must must must be a wanderer. Iceberg nichelings don't count. Go out and find one or just have one appear randomly near your tribe. (you do NOT need to start a new tribe to do this) - Must be within the time given. You will have to the end of this month. NO EXCEPTIONS! Also don't use screenshots of old nichelings. You must find the nicheling within the given time, not before or after. However, there is no way to tell, so just be cool and don't cheat. Tis just a game, afterall - Only one contester per person - If you would like to compete, react to this post with . You have until the end of this month to enter a nicheling. After that, rejection. (Also you may want to enter yours a little early because of timezones) - Once you have entered a nicheling, you cannot switch it out, so choose wisely - You need 2 screenshots. One should look like the one below, and the other should be taken of the nicheling before you welcome them into your tribe - Have fun. Failure to do so will result in a serious penalty Once we have everyone's I will make a poll. Everyone can vote on which one they think is the best, whether you competed or not. Just don't vote for yourself. This is the first time I'm doing anything like this, so if you have any questions or suggestions, please comment below.

  10. It always looks so strange when the babies come out with the horns, so I thought it would be idea if the horns would grow as they age. Newborns would have no horns, babies with 1 gem would have little stubs. Ones with 2 gems would just have a smaller version of the horns than the adults? Once they become adults their horns would be fully grown.

  13. Its the absence of sound that wakes Roku. The chirpy greetings, the happy purrs and friendly growls indicating the presence and warmth of his tribe are gone. Instead, there is only the hollow, cold sound of clashing waves - monotone and ever-present. A jolt of panic hits him - he is alone. Somehow his family, his island, his home has gone and been replaced with this terrifyingly silent place. A breeze blows gently from within the island, bringing new, uncanny smells, making the tall grass whisper. Roku freezes. His instincts tell him to run, to fight, to do something, but there is no safe place for him to reach. Everything here is his enemy and he is on his own. The panic turns into terror as he realizes how utterly helpless he is. Desperately searching for comfort he curls into himself, closing his eyes and pressing his head to the ground, trying to ignore the deafening silence around him. He tries to think of home. Of the comfort of his family's island. Everything there had been discovered generations before even his parents were born. The grass was short and secure and the reassuring sounds of the tribe had filled the air every moment he could remember. The memories calm him and he manages to fall into a dreamless sleep. As Roku awakens the next morning he feels somewhat grounded. He is still anxious, but this time around he manages to take a few steps into the mysterious grassy depths of the island. As he sniffs the air all he can register are the smells of earth and grass - mixed with the sweet, familiar scent of berries. Both their scent as well as the picking motion remind him of his home and the task of food gathering. It puts him at ease. Roku spends a few more days next to the berry bush. Slowly, the fear starts to turn into a state of alertness. He learns to appreciate the occasional gust of wind for the informations it gives him about the island. And as he adapts to his new surroundings, curiosity arises. He takes a step away from the berry bush and discovers a strange plant - one that he has never seen before. The subtle scent must have been covered up by the stronger smell of the berries. It doesn't seem particularly appetizing to him, so he decides to leave it alone, taking another step farther into the grass. Another smell suddenly becomes overpowering, but this one is familiar to him. The big creature notices Roku and gives him a friendly head rub. Although its presence is nowhere near as comforting as the one of another nicheling Roku cuddles up to it and relaxes in its soothing warmth. As it starts to rain the strong body shield him from the pouring water and keeps the cold at bay. Even though he longs to bask in the comfort of another creatures companionship for longer, Roku knows that the ghost-of-the-grass cannot become his new tribe. And so he marches on, entering an area with dry, yellow grass. The ground seems different here and there are fewer scents lingering in the air. All of a sudden a big, scary thing stands in his way. It looks strange, with weirdly shaped berry-like things surrounded by sharp-looking orange pricks, threatening anyone who might think of picking the odd fruits. Roku decides to leave it alone and wanders up to the beach instead. The sweet smell of berries fills the air on the shore and Roku happily sits down next to the bush. The sound of the waves doesn't scare him anymore - now it gives him a sense of calmness. He settles in right there, filling his stomach with the ripe fruits and sleeping through and uneventful night. The second he wakes up however, something is off. At first, he doesn't know where to place it. Faint splashing noises are carried to him trough the still air. He can feel the restlesness starting to pool in his chest as he checks the air for any unusual scents. Roku breathes in and his fur stands up. There is no mistaking this - he can smell another nicheling! Excitedly, he jumps towards the source of the smell. He lands in the water, splashing everywhere. The stranger is visible now - the female's fur is of a flaming red that is easy to make out against the light shore. She seems to be attempting to catch some of the tiny fish that are swimming around her, although they easily escape her sweeping paws. Roku moves closer, greeting her with a squeaky purr. She turns to him, returning the greeting in a slightly mocking fashion. Her face is different from anything that Roku is familiar with - broad and angular, with a large nose and round, slightly protruded eyes. "Did you hurt your face?" he blurts out, unable to stop himself. The strange female blinks surprised at the question, only to fall into delighted, chirping laughter. She rolls her eyes back and her voice seems to drop. "I was cursed to look like this!" Roku takes a few steps back at that, puffing up his fur. Maybe approaching her so care-free was a bad idea. As she sees him back off the female falls into another fit of laughter. "I was joking around little stranger! This is just my face; I was born like this! Does everyone look so different where you come from?" Slightly embarrassed Roku flattens down his fur before sitting down next to her. "I am Roku" he says, avoiding her amused gaze. "I was separated from my tribe and I am trying to find a new home". The strange female looks at him with a more serious expression, the mischief from before gone from her eyes. "My name is Ithko, it’s great to meet you! If you'd like it then we could stay here together for a little bit."

  14. Roku cowers before her, trying to fight the primal urge to submit. He wants to offer his throat, wants to fall to the ground, wants to give himself up to her mercy in a desperate attempt to save himself. A red flash and Ithko is standing in front of him, facing off with the female instead. If he wasn't resisting his own instincts right now, Roku would be screaming at her, telling her to run as fast as she can. But all he can do is wait, for the sound of a body slamming to the ground, for the smell of her blood to rise into the air- "Hi, I'm Ithko! How are you? Did you come here to join us? You're like, really big, you know? Did you survive on your own? You look like you could scare away danger by looking at it!" Taken completely off guard, the stranger takes a step back. The intimidating aura surrounding her seems to die down as she focuses on Ithko. As she speaks her voice is a husky baritone. "My name is Saah and I came here to join you." With a glance towards Roku, who scrambles to appear calm and collected, she continues. "I suppose this wasn't a great first impression, but I mean no harm. My former tribe left to travel, and I have since hoped to find companions. If you deem me a worthy addition, then I will gladly stay." Roku and Ithko share a look. Saah is quite strange, but both of them agreed on finding new tribe members. It is Ithko who breaks the clinch by bumping her head against Saah's large chest. "You are welcome to stay with us for as long as you like. The young one behind me is Roku, we've met a few days ago." There is a short silence as Roku and Saah lock gazes. Careful, Roku takes a few steps towards her. She seemed to tower over him when they met earlier but both their heads are on the same level. He tries to still his breathing when they rub heads - a quick procedure after which he takes great care to distance himself once again. He curls up next to Ithko as they fall asleep, with Saah lying a few tail-lengths away. Listening to both of them breathing - Ithko fast and light, Saah deep and slow - calms him. It is a familiar noise that wakes Roku - the swishing sounds of leaves as someone picks the berries they carry. He opens his eyes to see that Saah must have come closer during the night. She lies next to Ithko, who is still pressed against him, sleeping soundly. His thoughts are still clouded, and he starts drifting away again when he registers an unfamiliar scent. Roku jerks awake and angles his head to track down the source of the smell. It smells like nicheling and berries, overlaid and intertwined. With great care as to not alert the stranger he gets up and peers over the stump. Now he can see the intruder, a scrawny two-gemmed male with an uncannily long snout, feeding on his berry bush. He lowers himself down, tensing up, getting ready to pounce. The collision between him and the stranger is strong enough to send them flying into the shallow water. While his opponent panics Roku pins him down with ease. The commotion must have startled his tribemates awake as both appear next to him within seconds.

  20. Tribe Life - Nichelings have varying levels of dominance within a tribe, each bringing a different type of role. However, they can be split into three main types, with gender having no influence over a nichelings rank whatsoever: Alphas: Nichelings posessing this rank will have an intimidating aura surrounding them. A high-ranking or very confident alpha will often have a presence so strong that younger or weaker nichelings will instinctively submit to them. It is quite common that they are physically strong (tribes consisting of very strong nichelings are almost entirely made up of alphas) and natural leaders. While alphas can easily co-exist even in small tribes, unacquainted ones attempting to kill one another is a common phenomenon. Betas: Wanderers most commonly posess this rank. Betas are quite hard to recognize, as it is possible that an low-ranking alpha and a high-ranking omega can show similar character traits to them. In general, they tend to be very individualistic and quite free-spirited. Since they easily fit into tribes thanks to their versatility they often wander around and may disappear for days before they return to their tribe. Omegas: These nichelings are highly social, although there are exceptions. Oftentimes they belong to the more unfortunate ones gene-wise. Because they generally do not pose a threat to those ranking higher than them, they often de-escalate tense situations with their presence.

  21. Ageing - Nichelings with spiky bodies are born with soft spikes, similar to hedgehogs. When they grow up they gradually harden. The spikes also grow longer during the entire life of the nicheling and it is possible to determine age via length of the spikes. - The same thing is true for any kind of horns. Antennae are the only expection to this rule and do not grow larger when a nicheling ages. - Manes will also get increasingly more prominent when a male ages. However, this process is not as linear as the other ones mentioned so far. A sickly or weak male will always have a small mane. Males that are severly wounded or weakened without a chance for recovery (except for healing) will instantly loose a large part of their mane. - Nichelings fur turns white or grey when they grow old.
    1 point
  22. Fur - Big-bodied nichelings always have very thick and rough fur, while nichelings with lean bodies are known to have incredibly soft and shiny fur. - Nichelings with water bodies or gills have a coat similar to seals. - Nichelings shed or grow a thicker pelt depending on the climate of their environment. But the changes in hairlength strongly depend on the body type, with big-bodied nichelings being able to turn into mountains of fur when its cold enough. - Toxic body does not have fur. Instead, nichelings with this gene will have frog-like skin. - Armored body has a structure similar to armadillos.

  23. ALRIGHT, turns out i can continue heres the first part of your update: Much time had passed since the tribe arrived at their new home. Pesket was offered the position of leader, but he refused, passing it over to Pine. Fennel died from his illness not long after, and the tribe mourned for who they considered their savior. Moth worked tirelessly to prove himself, to try and be better than his brother and father. Fennel assured him that he didn't blame him for anything, just before he died. His hard work eventually caused Pine to fall for him, and the two ruled over the evergrowing tribe together. But, peace can't last. A certain daughter of the two tribe leaders indirectly set the tribe near extinction, and all because she simply discovered something in the wilds one day. Something dangerous.

  29. As darkness slowly starts to creep over the horizon, the two of them stretch out on the shore. They sit in silence, until Ithko starts to speak: "I never had a tribe. Both of my parents were loners, and I left them once I gained my third gem so I could live freely." At this, Roku tenses. He had thought that Ithko would stay with him from now on - that she would become his tribe. But maybe he was wrong, and he will be all alone again. His thoughts are interrupted when the other one speaks again. "But I don't think you should be left alone any longer. You are young, and this island is more dangerous than it seems. Plus, having company is nice. Of course, if you don't want me to become your tribe then- " She is interrupted as Roku presses himself up against her, purring loudly. With a happy chirp, Ithko returns the gesture. This night, Roku falls asleep next to Ithko, her heartbeat a steady, reassuring drumming even in his sleep. He wakes up feeling different. Instinctively, he freezes, while taking in the fresh morning air, searching for something unusual, a sign of danger. But there is nothing except for the familiar smells of grass, earth and water, mixed with the comforting scent of Ithko, who is snuggled up against him. She seems to feel his restlessness as she stretches and yawns. Still dozy, she turns to bump her head against his in a silent greeting. As she pulls back, a surprised look appears on her face. "You gained your last gem! Congratulations!" Stunned, Roku looks down at his chest. There, nested in his thick fur glow three gems. He is silent as a stingy, heavy feeling arises within him. This was supposed to happen at home. With his older siblings warmly welcoming him into the life of an adult, and his parents congratulating him proudly. Ithko, noticing his distress, nuzzles his cheek. They stay like this until Roku's chest doesn't feel as heavy anymore. "This is a special day for you, we should celebrate it. I know that you miss your family - do you want to tell me about them? After we have had some berries of course." Roku nods and sits down next to the berry bush. As he is occupied with licking his stained paws, Ithko lifts her paw and presses it against his new gem, leaving a purple smudge in the form of her paw. She casts a mischievous glance towards him and effortlessly jumps away when he tries to stain her gems as well. They chase each other around for a bit, smearing berry juice on each other’s fur. After they have cleaned themself up in the tides, Roku can't help but wonder if it was the warm feeling of her company that lead to the emergence of his last gem. Roku is stretched out, still trying to let his fur dry under the warm rays of the sun. Ithko, whose shorter fur has returned to its normal state already, is staring fascinated at a strange stump emerging from the ground. "Did you know that you can try and call for others when you climb on one of those? What do you think about trying it?". The prospect of meeting someone new excites Roku, but his fur is still heavy, and he is enjoying the sun far too much to move. "Why don’t you give it a try? “ he asks, voice low and content. Ithko hops onto the stump with ease, standing up high and making a loud, thrilling noise. She repeats it a few times, ears perking up in an attempt to notice even the slightest of sounds. The sound of something large moving through the grass is loud enough to catch even Roku's attention. Taking in the air once again, he can pinpoint its source. He approaches carefully, as to not disturb the newcomer. Once he spots the stranger, he realizes that his efforts were wasted. She is tall, towering above him and showing no sign of fear. Her yellow fur is already showing streaks of grey, adding to the impressive aura surrounding her.

  33. Part Eleven, Day Twenty-Six—Queen’s Mate Onoko It was a few days after I became blind when Rahzere gave birth to a child. “Ugh,” she groaned. “A son. Here, take it.” A bundle of fur was thrusted into my paws. I could hear her walk away, towards the shore. “Hi,” I said the the bundle of fur. It mewed, and I nearly dropped it—uh, him. “I, uh—I’m not really sure how to take care of kids…” I managed to feel my way into the nest and settled my son beside me. “I guess I have to give you a name.” The fur-bundle snuggled into my belly, searching for milk. I nudged him away from my stomach—there’s no milk here. “What about...Pnuma?” The baby mewed very loud, making me jump. “I guess you like that, huh?” The child—Pnuma—mewed again, and almost instantly began to snore. Pretty soon, I was probably snoring too. (p.s. Pnuma is pronounced noo-muh) ~ ~ ~ It was morning again. I couldn’t see the sky, but Pnuma was awake. He was tugging on my ear, trying to play. Aww. Then I heard Rahzere coming. I had learned to recognize her by her footsteps—light, but strong and fierce. I instantly straightened up and curled my tail around him to protect Pnuma (he promptly began to chew on it). “ONOKO!” She called my name strict and loud. “It’s time we move on to a new island.” What? A new island?! I liked the one we lived on now...but I couldn’t defy her, so I kept quiet. “I’m going to gather the rest of you.” She said ‘you’ as though she was disgusted that she’d have to bring males with her. “Meet me at the east side of the island with him.” She was probably referring to Pnuma, but if she gestured to him at all, I obviously couldn’t see it. There’s a port there.” “Yes, my Queen.” I wish I didn’t have to come. But I don’t want to get hurt. And I don’t want Pnuma to get hurt, either. Rahzere walked away in the direction of Niit and Enkra. I was just settling back into the nest with Pnuma—my son is too young to walk long distances quite yet—when I heard someone heading my way, from the Unknown. The footsteps stopped. “Onoko!” I paused, astounded. “...Mii?” “ONOKO!!!” Suddenly there was fur rubbing against my face in a nuzzle. “But— Rahzere might see you—!” “Oh, I’m fine, don’t worry! She left to go talk to Niit and Enkra.” She paused for a quick moment before barrelling on. “So, how are you?! It’s been so long! The last time I saw you Rahzere was sending me out and I was crying and Father was crying and you were crying but you were being brave and then I couldn’t see you anymore and then I went and cried myself to sleep in the rain and wished Mother were here even though she was mean to me (I guess I wish she was a good mother and treated us and Father and Niit and Enkra and even Plithhrin and Ique even though they’ve been off on hunting adventures all my life) and then when I woke up I stopped crying because Father was there and he gave me a lovely necklace of le—OH MY GOODNESS ARE YOU BLIND AND IS THAT A BABY.” She went off track so abruptly that it took me a moment to respond. “Uh, yeah...Rahzere made me be her mate...and I refused.” Mii didn’t respond, but Pnuma mewed to her. Mii started mewing back. “Uh…? Anyways, what did Father give you?” “Oh YEAH!” She mewed one more time to Pnuma before continuing our conversation. “He gave me this special necklace of these cool red leaves leaves and told me that he made it when he was on his home island and always wore it around his neck his whole life but his big fluffy neck fur hid it and he gave it to me because he decided I would lead my descendants home and if his family saw his necklace they’d know we belonged there so when I have a daughter and she becomes Queen she’ll take the necklace and then her daughter will have it and her daughter will have it and on and on and on to INFINITY or until we get home.” How she said that all in one breath, I do not know. “Oh...kay?” “WAIT THERE’S MORE! If I’m supposed to be Queen like Father said and have my daughter become Queen and on and on then Rahzere can’t be Queen and she’s gotta go anyways because she’s treating you badly so I’ve come up with the genius plan to kill her!” She said this so...cheerfully. “Wait...kill her…?” “Yep! It’s the only way we’ll get to live happily, so she’s gotta go! I’m gonna kill—” “Woah woah woah.” I covered Pnuma’s ears. “Don’t talk about this in front of him. You can...do it. Just don’t do it in front of him, okay?” “Oh! Yeah! Sorry. See ya later!”
