Crowshade slipped into the medicine den to check on Mossbeetle and CanaryStar, feeling a bit worried after CanaryStar’s fumble at the last sunrise. She blinked before squinting at the darkness of the medicine den in the early sunrise while wondering how Mossbeetle could see anything at times like this. Once her vision adjusted she froze, hoping that she was just jumping to conclusions. CanaryStar was laying on the moss nest which wouldn’t raise any alarm bells normally but the fact that Mossbeetle was laying somewhat on her with no signs of life caused Crowshade to quickly walk over to the two. She felt any signs of hope vanish as she checked the two for signs of life the way Mossbeetle had taught her as an apprentice. Upon finding nothing she slowly stepped back as she realized she would have to break the news to the other two. She was sure Twigstrike would feel some sadness at least but the thought of telling Blossompaw that her mom and uncle were dead made her feel nauseous, especially considering she was already not doing well after recent events. But she knew she couldn’t stall it forever so she took a deep breath before turning around and walking out of the medicine den to inform the other two. = All three nichelings were gathered around the still bodies of CanaryStar and Mossbeetle, looking at them with both similar yet different emotions. Sadness was felt among all of them but their deaths meant something different to every nicheling. Crowshade knew CanaryStar was a great leader but she was more hurt by the death of Mossbeetle. He had taught her so much about herbs and healing to the point he was practically a second mentor to her so the fact she had lost both her mentor-figures was a crushing blow. Twigstrike was sad but he was also grappling with the thought that he was now technically the leader of the clan, though he felt it was barely a clan with only three nichelings, he had known about it for some time now but for the reality to come true was different. He could already feel the responsibility that was suddenly thrust onto his shoulders and he didn’t know how to feel about it. Blossompaw was…not taking it well. At least internally she wasn’t. She was trying to not let it show how it was affecting her as the weight of everything started to slowly crush her emotional state, she was already fighting with her grief and guilt over taking a nicheling’s life but now she had to deal with losing her mom and uncle at the same time without any space between. She felt it was unfair, wasn’t she dealing with enough? Why did this have to happen? The three nichelings slept in different parts of the camp as they were all hurt but also feeling as if they couldn’t lean on each-other even in this difficult situation. A scream jolted Twigstrike awake as he shot up from his nest and bolted out to see what made that noise. The sight of Blossompaw hissing at a large beast greeted him and to his horror he saw blood running down from an injury across her side. Without a moment of hesitation he launched himself at the bearyena’s back, catching it off guard if the noise it made was any indicator, before sinking his teeth into the back of its neck. The beast roared in pain as it started to shake its pelt to dislodge its attacker. Despite his attempts to keep a hold Twigstrike felt his grip loosen before he flew off to the side. He grit his teeth when his body collided with the ground in an attempt to ignore the pain as he rose to his paws. The commotion had caused Crowshade to come investigate and it only took a few moments for her to understand the situation. Twigstrike ran around the bearyena to confuse it which gave Crowshade a chance to jump on its back. Crowshade wasn’t shaken off like Twigstrike as she dug her teeth into the beast’s throat without letting go. the beast thrashed and ended up scratching one of Twigstrike’s front legs making him jump back with the realization that he had been too close. Crowshade’s attempts were met with victory when the beast started struggling less and eventually fell to the ground dead. She didn’t let go for a few moments just in case before jumping off of the beast’s body. She looked over at Twigstrike before noticing the state Blossompaw was in. But before anything else could be done a growl sounded out that made every nicheling freeze before turning towards the edge of camp, where another bearyena had just stalked out of the grasses, and upon inspection it was easy to tell this one was much healthier due to the lack of showing ribs unlike the last one. “We can’t fight it, not like this” Crowshade said as she noticed Twigstrike preparing to attack. “But won’t it just follow us?” Twigstrike asked as he was locked in a staring contest with the beast across the large clearing. “Maybe, but at least we’d have chance if we ran” Crowshade said making Twigstrike scowl. “So we’re just supposed to leave our home to the beast?” He asked with a lashing tail. “It won’t matter if we’re all dead will it?” Crowshade asked making Twigstrike shut his mouth despite his annoyance. “Fine, then how should we stop it from following the scent of blood?” He asked as he kept eye contact with the bearyena as he noticed it had stopped moving for the moment. “Maybe you should lead in the opposite direction, lose it, then follow our scents” Crowshade suggested. Twigstrike didn’t love the idea but he could tell there wasn’t much choice so he nodded. Twigstrike ignored the pain in his front leg as he darted close enough to anger the bearyena before darting away to avoid its claws, giving Crowshade and Blossompaw the chance to run away. He made sure it was following before turning around and running in the opposite direction. He felt his blood rushing through him as the roar of the bearyena sounded behind him along with the sound of thundering pawsteps. Every pawstep almost felt as if it shook the earth beneath him but he forced himself to keep running even as his leg seared with white hot flashes of pain. Every instinct in him was tearing itself apart with the inability to choose between run and fight. It was only after the sound of pawsteps stopped that he allowed himself to slow down, his entire body shaking from the adrenaline that carried him so far as the exhaustion started to seep in. He was tempted to just lay down and rest but he forced himself to find out where he was so he find the scents of his clanmates. It took until almost sun-down to find his clanmates but he was relieved when he did as he immeadiatly collapsed due to the adrenaline running out. Crowshade was relieved when he noticed he was mostly just tired. “This will sting” Twigstrike’s sluggish mind barely processsed the words when stinging pain shot out from his injured leg causing him to instictually try to yank it back but Crowshade held it with a strong enough grip to keep it in place as she finished applying the chewed up healing fruit flowers. Twigstrike scowled a bit but didn’t say a word as he knew it would be bad if his injury was infected. “How’s Blossompaw?” Twigstrike was suddenly struck with the realization that Blossompaw had taken the most damage out of any of them. “She should be fine, it’ll scar but I’ve already applied the necessary herbs to make sure she doesn’t die” Crowshade easily replied after checking over his injury once more before deciding she was satisfied with it for now. She took a step back before speaking once more. “She tried to stay up to see you but the blood loss caused her to lose consciousness though thankfully she’s doing as well as she could be in this situation” Crowshade finished her explanation before turning around to check on the sleeping Blossompaw. “You should get some rest” Crowshade said without looking away from Blossompaw. “Shouldn’t you?” Twigstrike retorted but Crowshade simply shook her head. “I’ll rest next sunrise, I need to make sure Blossompaw’s condition continues to be stable” Crowshade said with a stubbornness that made Twigstrike drop it for the moment as he laid his head down and slowly closed his eyes. = “-T AWAY FROM THEM!” The sound of a shout forced Twigstrike to his paws which caused him to wince as he put pressure on his front left leg. He raised his eyes to be met with an unknown nicheling that was in front of Crowshade, who was standing in front of him and Blossompaw protectively. Blossompaw seemed just as dazed as he was, if not more. “Who are you?” Twigstrike asked with a hiss, he may be injured but he was supposed to be the leader and wanted to try and come across as such. “Oh! I’m Speckleheart, I was worried since you three don’t seem to be the best of shape” The unknown nicheling spoke with a gesture of the paw towards all of them. “Well we’re fine thank you” Twigstrike snapped making Speckleheart flinch as he realized these nichelings were very on edge. “I’m not trying to trick you or anything, promise! I just thought that maybe my clan could help you considering we have lots of herbs and food” Speckleheart offered with a smile as he hoped the three would accept his help. He knows that GoldenStar would be fine with it and as the deputy he was sure he could convince anyone with doubts. “Please, that sounds like an ambush waiting to happen” Blossompaw hissed as she rose to her paws despite Crowshade’s warning glare. “We’re not that rabill-brained” She continued as she puffed up her quills to look bigger. “It’s not! And what would my clan gain from killing a small group of nichelings who are already injured?” Speckleheart reasoned but the words made Twigstrike’s expression sour. “We’re not a ‘group’ we’re a clan!” Twigstrike replied making Speckleheart slowly gaze at each of the three nichelings while trying very hard to hide his doubt, how could three nichelings be a clan? But he bit his tongue as he didn’t want to irritate them further. “What is your clan’s name?” Speckleheart asked with the hope of calming the group at least a little. “WildClan” Twigstrike answered as he continued to watch the nicheling carefully. “Well WildClan, if you decide you don’t like it you can leave but give it a chance please, your injuries look bad” Speckleheart pleaded as he looked at the three. Twigstrike looked at the other two, who stared back, as the three had a silent conversation before he turned his gaze back to Speckleheart. “Fine, but if you try something we won’t be an easy fight I assure you” Twigstrike declared the group’s agreement making Speckleheart perk up as he realized they had actually agreed. “Oh perfect! Follow me” Speckleheart said as he turned around before starting to walk towards his clan’s camp while making sure to not go too fast for the injured nichelings.1 point
