This isn't based off any specific challenge, it's just a mash of bits and pieces of things. - Fern, a bright green-furred nicheling, didn’t bother to raise her tail feathers as her mate and other royal Mulch, a red-furred nicheling with lighter markings, held his tail up high for the other members of the group to follow as he bounded through the tall grass. Technically the small group was an attempt to forge a new kingdom but Fern didn’t really feel as if four nicheling counted as a true kingdom, she just hoped they would find some wanderers soon. The feeling of grass smacking her in the snout caused her nose to scrunch as her mind returned to the present with her mate excitedly going on about the new island they’d just landed on. “-not to mention that I don’t smell a single carnivore here!” Fern realized she had only caught the tail-end of that rambling as she heard Mulch stop speaking afterwards. “Maybe, but just because ya can’t smell ‘em doesn’t mean they don’t exist” Bandit, a black-furred nicheling with a bill and fluffy tail, said with a small sense of exasperation at the optimism and carelessness of the royal. She much preferred Mulch over Fern but she still wished that Mulch would show a little more caution sometimes. “Relax captain, if there was something dangerous here at least one of us would’ve noticed it” Fern spoke with her usual soft and relaxed tone as she found a bit of amusement at how wound up Bandit tended to be. “I have to admit that I thought you would be a bit more wary with a pup and the heir to the kingdom on the way” All the nicheling’s attention snapped to Silver, a silver-furred nicheling with quills, as he spoke considering that he had been silent for most of the trip. “Well you said it yourself, stress would be bad for the pup right?” Fern replied, making Silver release a soft sigh. “Yes but it’s not good to just ignore potential dangers or else neither of you will survive” Silver warned in an attempt to get the pregnant nicheling to heed his words. Fern barked out a laugh at the Healer’s warning “Please, it’s not like a carnivore can just appear out of thin air so I’ll be fine” she said with an amused smile much to Silver’s chagrin. “Maybe not but a bit of extra caution would do a world of good” Silver advised as the group continued making their way through the unexplored island which only got him a waved paw in response. “I’m not gonna ignore any signs of danger but I won’t put any unneeded stress onto myself either” Silver just gave up as he heard Fern’s words as he realized that she wouldn’t be listening to his advice. A comfortable silence stretched between the group as they surveyed their surroundings and continued forward until Mulch broke it. “Hope we can find a good place to s-” He tripped over his words causing him to give a small shake of his head before trying again “Hope we can find a good place to settle soon, we’ve been walking forever and I wanna make sure my wonderful mate gets her rest” Mulch gently pressed his side against Fern’s as he said the last part of the sentence earning him a soft smile and playful eye-roll from her at his affectionate nature while Bandit’s nose twitched at the sappy display. “You two could take a rest while I go scout out more of the island” Bandit offered as she shook her paw to try and dislodge the thorn in her paw from ripping out a patch of thorns on the way. “That would be good” Fern instantly sat down, thankful for the chance to rest her paws. “Do you want me to come with you?” Silver asked as he came up to Bandit’s side with a glance towards Bandit’s paw. “No, I’d rather you stay here both in case something dangerous appears here and so if I find something dangerous I’ll be the only one hurt” Bandit replied as she lifted her paw towards Silver who quickly used his claws to pull the thorn out. “Well don’t just sacrifice yourself if you find danger, these two are perfectly capable of fighting” Fern spoke from her spot now laying in the grass making the Captain turn around to respond. “I’m not leading something dangerous here to hurt the rest of you when I could give you a chance to survive” Bandit argued as she stared at the Royal. “Well losing a nicheling when our kingdom barely counts as one wouldn’t do any good either” Fern remarked with a twitch of her eye. “I can’t just let the unknown be unexplored when we’re relaxing like sitting dodomingos” Bandit reasoned with a twitch of her ear causing Fern to close her eyes and take a deep breath. “Fine, I can’t stop you” Bandit turned around to leave “But!” the words caused the Captain to freeze with agitation prickling up her pelt “You’re going to take Silver with you so you’re not alone” Fern opened her eyes and stared at Bandit. “But what about you two?” Bandit asked as she turned her head to look at the two Royals. “Mulch can fight and just because I’m pregnant doesn’t mean I’m defenseless” Fern said as she tilted her head to show off her horns making Bandit open her mouth before closing it again. “Alrighty than” She caved as she realized this wasn’t a battle she could win. “Let’s go” She said to Silver before walking into the grass making Silver glance at Fern and Mulch, with Fern giving a ‘go on’ nod, before following after Bandit. “Can we stop for a moment?” Silver’s voice cut through Bandit’s thoughts and tunnel vision. “Why?” Bandit asked considering she would rather finish this task quickly and efficiently. “It’d be good to start gathering herbs even if we haven’t found a permanent spot” Silver replied as he approached a toxic berry bush making Bandit’s ears shoot up. “Should you really get herbs from a toxic berry bush?” Bandit stepped in front of the Healer. “Certain parts of it are not only safe but helpful” Silver side-stepped Bandit and got close enough to pluck a leaf from the bush “for example these are actually good for healing some sicknesses” he spoke as he plucked a few more and gently laid them on a small pile before using his paws to dig into the dirt. “And this” He held up a small chunk of roots “can be used to make a nicheling throw up if they get something toxic in their system” he explained as he placed it with the pile of leaves. Bandit gave a hum of acknowledgment at the explanation. “...Could you lend me a paw? I grabbed too many” Silver spoke after noticing the amount of leaves and roots he’d grabbed. “Sure” Bandit said as she picked up some leaves and roots making Silver do the same before continuing on their check of the area. A scent hit Silver’s nose causing him to pause and sniff the air causing Bandit to run into him before jumping back. Seeing as she couldn’t talk considering the leaves dangling from her jaws she just stared at Silver with confusion. Silver noiselessly walked forward leaving Bandit to follow with tensed muscles. Bandit almost inhaled the leaves she was holding as she saw the scene in front of her. Fern was laying in a make-shift nest that looked like it was only held together by dreams and desperation, and some grass. But the surprising part was the two tiny bundles of fur next to her which Mulch was currently grooming. Silver rushed over to Fern’s side causing Mulch to startle before giving the Healer some space. “Are you feeling okay?” Silver asked as he made sure there was no blood before sniffing the newborn pups for any sign of sickness or injury. “I’m exhausted and still have some pain” Fern answered with a yawn as she struggled to keep her eyes open. “Is the pain severe? Mild? Moderate?” Silver launched the questions as he took a step back after noticing no signs of injury. “It’s not severe, maybe a mix of mild and moderate?” Fern said as another yawn escaped her making Silver wince in sympathy. “As long as you’re not in severe pain we can talk more later after you get some rest” He said making Fern nod before laying her head down and immediately falling asleep. “Do they have names yet?” Silver asked as he turned his attention towards Mulch causing him to glance over at the Healer. “Yeah, the purple one is named Nightshade and the other one is Dust” Mulch replied as he looked at his newborn pups with pure love in his eyes. “They’re good names, and they seem healthy to me” Silver replied as he let out a sigh of relief. “I knew you should’ve stayed here, I didn’t even consider the possibility of Fern giving birth while we were gone” Bandit said after placing the leaves on the ground. “You couldn’t have predicated when she’d give birth, it was actually a bit earlier than I expected” Silver replied but then spoke again before Bandit could reply “Come help me find a spot to put these since we’re gonna stay for a little bit” Silver picked up some of the leaves and roots before walking into the grass. Bandit’s nose scrunched in annoyance but she did as she was asked and followed the Healer. Silver paused to start clearing some grass in an area that was close enough to the other two to be nearby but far enough to have a private conversation. Bandit helped clear grass though her annoyance was still heavily present. Silver then placed the herbs he was holding on the ground and gestured for Bandit to do the same. “Well why did you want my help with this? I doubt it was just for this” Bandit spoke after placing her own herbs onto the ground. “Because you’re stressing yourself out with things you can’t control” Silver spoke “Like with Fern giving birth, you couldn’t have known that would happen and beating yourself up over it won’t change the past” he continued before Bandit could get a word in causing her to scoff. “Well I can’t afford to make these types of mistakes, Fern being fine is just dumb luck” Bandit’s tail lashed behind her “It was important to have a Healer if something went wrong, but because I had to take you with me Fern had to give birth without one and it’s my fault” she looked away with narrowed eyes. “I can appreciate taking responsibility for your actions but let me repeat my words, you can’t predict these things” Silver put emphasis on all five of those last words with the hope it would get through Bandit’s thick skull. “But I could’ve realized there was a chance of that happening and prevented the situation from arising in the first place” Bandit insisted making Silver look at the clouds as if they could give him an answer to the other nicheling’s stubbornness. “There is no way for a nicheling to consider every single possibility all the time and you shouldn’t expect yourself to uphold such standards, you’re just gonna burn yourself out or get yourself killed with that mentality” Silver rebutted with a stare. “Well-” Silver cut off Bandit’s words immediately “No, at least begin to accept that you can’t predict every possible scenario” he said making Bandit’s face scrunch though she didn’t continue arguing. “Can we just finish doing what we’re doing?’ Bandit asked as she glanced at the herbs. “Fine” Silver relented and focused on trying to make a make-shift Healer’s den to keep the herbs in.1 point

The tribe fled from the ramfoxes, not wanting to attract more balance bears from the noise of the battle. They retreated to a corner by the shore, curling up into a ball for warmth and safety. By the morning, the mewls of newborn nichelings could be heard from the nest that Mari had made. The new parents proudly looked down at their first children, overwhelmed with joy. (yall i need name ideas for them 💔💔💔)1 point

The small tribe finally found an area to relax by the shore of the island. Mari was now expecting a baby nicheling, and the tribe needed to wind down after the the stress of the balance bear situation and the loss of Koral and Aller. It was going well, until the tribe awoke to the sound of wild growling and unfamiliar paws crunching through the snow. A pack of ramfoxes. “Whoaaa! What are those things?” Allu wondered aloud, looking at the fox-life creatures as they closed in on the tribe. “They’re called ramfoxes, and they’re not exactly something to be ‘whoa-ing’ at! They may not be the most bulky or durable creatures, but they can sure pack a punch. And they’re also professional food-stealers.” Frosthorn explained as he, Mari, and Melina jumped to the frontlines to protect the tribe.1 point

The group continued on their path to get as far away from the balance bear as they could, trudging through snow, and picking up roots and rabbits on the way. Soon enough, snowflakes began to rain down on them again, and the group grumbled to themselves, knowing that a harsh blizzard was soon to come yet again. Mari, who had been out searching for food, came back to the group once, shivering and freezing, but not willing to admit it. Frosthorn, however, approached her, curling up next to her, letting the warmth from his heat sink into her fur. “You okay?” He muttered, and Mari nodded silently, trying not to let herself show weakness. After a few moments of silence, the two nichelings stayed huddled up together in silence, content with each other’s company, until Frosthorn opened his mouth to speak. “You know, Mari…” He began, his voice more nervous than his usual friendly, inviting tone. “I really like you.” Mari looked at him curiously. Well, of course he liked her, she was the de-facto leader of the tribe. Unless he means…. “Actually, I don’t really like you. I love you.” Mari froze in shock, not sure how to react. She was never much of an emotional nicheling, and being all lovey-dovey was never her thing, but she couldn’t deny that she had also felt something when around Frosthorn. Not knowing how to tell him this, she simply buried her head in his neck fur, purring loudly. (Can gilled nichelings even purr? Lmao) “I’m assuming that’s an ‘I love you too?’” Frosthorn smiled, and Mari nodded. “HA! I WAS RIGHT! Meli, you owe me a root!” Allu yelled suddenly from behind them, making Frosthorn smirk and shake his head as the adolescent nicheling’s antics. (help this is so corny I cannot write romance 🙏💀)1 point

Blossomstorm walked towards the camp entrance where Crowshade was sitting guard with the stars twinkling above. “Where are you going?” Crowshade asked as the other nicheling started walking through the entrance making her pause her movement. “I’m going on a walk so I can actually sleep” Blossomstorm felt guilt creep into her conscience as the lie slipped through her teeth without much thought, Sandstripe’s worry of meeting had swirled in her mind long enough to sow a seed of doubt in her mind. “Oh, just be careful please” Crowshade said with a note of concern considering the recent danger but she doubted Blossomstorm would actually heed her advice. “I will!” A genuine smile grew on Blossomstorm’s face before she turned toward the grasses and made her way toward the WhisperClan border, or at least where she thought she remembered it being. - It took a bit longer than she’d like to admit but Blossomstorm found the border of the territory if the strong scent was any indicator. She was wondering if Sandstripe had flaked when the sandy-furred nicheling appeared out of the grasses looking a little embarrassed as she walked to stand a few tail lengths in front of Blossomstorm. “Sorry, I needed to make sure Sparrowtuft didn’t wake up when I left the warriors den and he’s a light sleeper” Sandstripe apologized as she gave a nervous smile. “It’s fine, I got a bit lost and ended up taking a bit to find the right place” Blossomstorm shared to try and dispel any embarrassment which seemed to work as Sandstripe’s demeanor brightened. “Oh well guess we’re both having issues” Sandstripe said with a snicker bringing a smile to Blossomstorm’s face. “Did you get to be deputy?” The question fell from Blossomstorm’s mouth before she her brain caught up and she realized that was probably extremely rude when Sandstripe slightly flinched with a shocked expression. Sandstripe took a few seconds to recover from the shock that question hit her with to think of an answer. “Ah well…no” Sandstripe said with her smile taking a more nervous edge again as she looked off to the side. “Oh uh sorry but can I ask….why?” Blossomstorm wasn’t sure if that was considered rude but she didn’t understand why GoldenStar wouldn’t choose someone like Sandstripe, she’s ambitious but doesn’t seem malicious. “Well Sparrowtuft is more experienced and Flamepaw is his second apprentice so she thought he would be the best choice” Sandstripe said only further confusing Blossomstorm. “But she has to notice how hostile he can be, surely that’s not a good choice for future leader?” Blossomstorm did feel bad when Sparrowtuft lost a clanmate and had to see his leader lose a life but the idea of him being leader while hating her and her clanmates guts seems like a potential disaster. “Yeah I know…but that’s what she chose so” Sandstripe kept her eyes to the side as she said this. “Well do you still wanna train your fighting skills?” Blossomstorm asked as she forced herself to swallow asking anymore questions though it was a bit tough. “Well yeah, maybe I still have a chance at deputy someday though I doubt it” Sandstripe put some optimism in her tone as she turned her head to look at the other nicheling. “That’s the spirit! Maybe you’ll have a chance if you prove yourself to be the bestest member of the clan” Blossomstorm beamed at the fact she didn’t come out here for nothing. “So first of all why don’t we do a test battle first to see what you’re lacking?” Blossomstorm suggested which Sandstripe answered with a nod. “Great! So anyways” Blossomstorm suddenly launched herself at Sandstripe, quickly bowling her over though Sandstripe recovered quickly as she swiped at Blossomstorm’s face to make her flinch. Sandstripe took the chance to stand to her paws and create some distance between the two. The two slowly circled each other while looking for weak points or a good chance to strike. Blossomstorm’s patience was running thing far quicker than Sandstripe so she suddenly charged at Sandstripe which threw the other nicheling off at the suddenness of it. Blossomstorm used her back legs to jump up in preparation for a pounce which Sandstripe scrambled to dodge but was knocked over by Blossomstorm as she didn’t move far enough. Blossomstorm ended up hovering over Sandstripe while the other nicheling was on her back. Blossomstorm’s joy at winning was quickly washed away as the position reminded her of her former mentor, or the last of their interactions. She suddenly froze as the scent of blood reached her nose. Her paws and muzzle felt sticky with blood and her paws seemed to be colored a rusty red now. Seeing Sandstripe’s exposed neck made her feel as if something was whispering to her to ‘just do it again, not like you’ve never killed’. The thoughts swirled around her head and she felt so sick at the mere thought of doing something like that again, she desperately wished she could run to the nearest source of water and wash herself until the sticky feeling and bad thoughts were washed away. Being so lost in her own head meant Blossomstorm was completely unprepared for a kick to the stomach, causing her to be launched off of the other nicheling before landing on her side with a slight wheeze. Sandstripe beamed with victory until she saw Blossomstorm still laying on her side after a few moments. She rushed over to Blossomstorm’s side with a concerned expression. “Are you alright? I didn’t mean to kick you that hard, I should’ve been more careful even if we are practicing a fight” Sandstripe’s words barely reached Blossomstorm but she forced herself to her paws as she realized how concerning it probably looked to the other nicheling. “I’m fine, just wasn’t paying enough…wasn’t paying enough attention” Blossomstorm said in an attempt to wave away her worries. “Maybe we should continue our training next moonhigh?” Sandstripe suggested and Blossomstorm couldn’t deny that she would probably need a break to recalibrate her thoughts and emotions. “Probably” She simply said in agreement but the look on concern that Sandstripe worse made her a bit queasy. “But I did figure out a weak point in your fighting skills” Blossomstorm wanted to shift the topic away from her lackluster performance during that fight. “Oh?” Sandstripe said with perked ears. “Yeah, well the main issue I see is that you aren’t able to move fast enough to dodge attacks so next time we meet maybe we could focus on something to improve your agility” Blossomstorm spoke on what she noticed during the training, pushing away the uncomfortable feeling that still clung to her paws and muzzle. “That makes sense now that I think about it” Sandstripe looked into the sky as she considered the other nicheling’s words. “I should probably go back home though, I’ve been out for a while” Blossomstorm said as she realized that she had been out far longer than she meant to. “Oh! Right, right” Sandstripe said feeling surprised herself. “Well bye than!” Sandstripe said as Blossomstorm started walking away. “Bye” Blossomstorm called over her shoulder as she continued walking. Blossomstorm hadn’t gone back to camp at first, having decided to take a detour to a river to wash herself in the water. She washed her paws and muzzle once but it still felt wrong so she washed her paws and muzzle again…and again…she hated the fact that the sticky feeling felt like it wouldn’t go away no matter how long she tried to rub the feeling off of her fur. She just stayed by the water until she noticed the sun starting to peek out and she realized how long she’d been gone. She jumped to her paws and quickly ran towards the camp while internally cringing at the scolding she would probably be getting. - “BLOSSOMSTORM!” Blossomstorm winced as her entrance to the camp was greeted with a yell from the approaching TwigStar. “Where were you?! We’ve been looking for you for most of the night and yet you wander in like nothing happened!” To most TwigStar would come across as just furious but Blossomstorm quickly noticed the way his fur was a complete mess and exhaustion weighed heavily in his eyes. “Sorry…” Blossomstorm mumbled feeling shame burn through pelt at the realization that she’d stressed her clanmates out much more than she thought she would. “Sorry?! I-” TwigStar forced himself to stop and take a breath to reorganize his thoughts. “Where were you? Why are you paws and face wet?” TwigStar tried to keep an even tone but Blossomstorm easily picked up on the concern and fear in his voice. “I just- I wandered too far from the territory and got lost” Blossomstorm decided saying that she was training with Sandstripe might concern TwigStar further and he seemed more than stressed enough. “And your paws and face?” TwigStar pressed as Blossomstorm mindlessly shook a paw to try and get rid of some of the water. “I saw a river and tried to hunt some fish, the fish won” Blossomstorm quickly thought up a believable lie. TwigStar stared at her in a way that made her wonder if he saw through her lies, would she lose his trust?...But then he sighed with closed eyes. “Well maybe bring someone with you next time you decide to have a late night hunting trip, you could get severely injured if those bearyena come back and find you alone” TwigStar opened his eyes to reveal a look of drained concern, only making Blossomstorm feel even worse as she realized that he must be completely exhausted from balancing his leader duties and worrying about her whereabouts. “I will” Blossomstorm put her gaze to her paws which seemed to satisfy TwigStar as he nodded. “Alright, just…be a bit more careful please” Blossomstorm just silently nodded at TwigStar’s words before standing to her paws and turning around. She was relived at the thought of getting some rest after accidentally staying up through the night but she was stopped by running into someone causing her to glance up from her paws only to notice who she ran into. “Sorry Crowshade, I’m going to get some rest” She said as she went to go around her but was stopped by Crowshade stepping into her path again. “Come with me” Crowshade spoke as she turned around and walked, having no doubt that Blossomstorm would follow. “Uh- okay?” Blossomstorm proved Crowshade’s assumption correct as she trailed after her closest clanmate with a bit of irritation as she was looking forward to taking a nap. Though she would’ve loved spending time with Crowshade any other time currently Blossomstorm wanted nothing more than to collapse into her nest. It was only once the two were in a secluded corner of camp that Crowshade stopped and then proceeded to sit down, tapping a paw against the ground next to her. Blossomstorm took the obvious invitation to sit down next to her. “What did you want to talk about?” Blossomstorm asked as she idly brushed a paw over the dusty ground. “I doubt you just went on a sudden hunting trip, especially considering I can smell WhisperClan on you” Blossomstorm flinched from surprise as Crowshade commented on the very faint scent that clung to parts of the pink nicheling’s pelt. “Yeah well-” Blossomstorm heavily considered just trying to push another lie but took a deep breath instead. “When we were at the WhisperClan camp I ended up chatting with Sandstripe and we realized we both have weaknesses that the other was good at, she’s good at hunting but not the best at fighting” Blossomstorm took a moment to take a breath before continuing “so we decided that we would meet at night so we could practice what we’re weak at and become the best warriors we can be!” she took a moment to catch her breath before glancing at Crowshade. “Oh…okay” Crowshade both did and didn’t want to doubt Blossomstorm’s words, as the idea of her crush visiting a nicheling in secret made her equal parts nervous and agitated. But Crowshade can also easily see Blossomstorm running off to get better at hunting to ‘prove herself’ to the clan, though she has her own thoughts on that unfortunate mentality. “Can I go sleep now?” Blossomstorm said, not really picking up on the off tone of Crowshade’s voice. “Sure” Crowshade decided to drop it as she noticed the exhaustion that seemed to seep from Blossomstorm. “See you later” Blossomstorm farewelled as she stood to her paws before walking in the direction of the warrior’s den.1 point

“I still can’t believe we got twins” Fern said, having woken up after taking a much needed nap from giving birth. “Yeah, but this is an amazing omen!” Mulch exclaimed making the pups stir. He sat still and quiet until they settled back down with a breath of relief. “Sorry” He whispered which Fern brushed off with a wave of her paw “It’s fine, but what do you mean by that?” Fern asked after hearing of it being a good omen. “Well in my old kingdom having twins is a sign of future prosperity and luck” Mulch explained as he glanced up from his pups to instead look at his mate. “Maybe this whole making a new kingdom thing will work out after all if that’s true” Fern smiled down at her pups with a soft smile on her face. “Omen or not we would’ve made it work” Mulch spoke softly as he gently pressed his cheek against Fern’s “but this has to work, this must be a sign!” his voice grew in volume near the end but he managed to control it enough to not disturb the pups. “You’re right, we’ll make sure our kingdom thrives” Fern closed her eyes to enjoy the contact as she felt any worries she had melt away. “That’s the spirit” Mulch closed his eyes as well with a smile. “ThIs is miserable work” Bandit said with a shake of her pelt, spraying Silver with droplets of water. “Don’t spray me!” Silver said as a drop of water hit his nose “And besides we need to finish making this den so we’ll have a proper Healer’s den” he said as he carefully maneuvered a thorn vine so he didn’t catch a thorn. “And this couldn’t wait for another day because?” Bandit asked as she weaved two vines together with a wince as a thorn nicked her paw pad. “Because the sooner we get it done the sooner we won’t have to worry about it” Bandit deadpanned at the answer as it sounded like something that would be told to a pup “not to mention I’d rather spend a sunny day relaxing rather than doing this so we might as well finish doing it while it’s ‘miserable’” Silver parroted Bandit’s earlier word as he starting weaving the current vine he held with another. “Well wouldn’t making a den for Fern and the pups be a better use of our time?” Bandit asked as she finished weaving together another pair of vines. “Mulch found a place that they would be able to stay dry” Silver answered as he continued to focus on his work “I’d never choose the Healer’s den over making sure pups don’t get sick” he spoke once more as he struggled with his current pair of vines. “Where are the herbs?” Bandit asked as the thought came to her as she realized that they’d be soaked if they were left out. “As soon as I realized it was starting to rain I stored them in the driest spot I could to try and make sure they don’t rot” Silver said as he finally finished weaving together the next pair of vines. “Oh good” Bandit simply responded as she finished another pair of vines. “Oh look, only a few more vines and we’ll have the basic shape” Bandit snapped her attention towards the whole ‘den’ at Silver’s words. It was almost done and Bandit didn’t even notice as she had idly continued to weave them together. “At long last” Bandit said with a deep breath before a sigh of relief, then she focused on putting all her energy into finishing the den. Between the two of them the den was finished quickly and the two stepped back to admire their handiwork. “We can add the finishing touches some other day” Silver spoke after assessing the state of the newly made Healer’s den “Now we can go rest for the day” he said with a stretch as the cold really became noticeable. “Though maybe doing this in the rain wasn’t the best idea” Bandit’s head whipped towards the Healer’s words with a disbelieving stare that made Silver burst into laughter. “Unbelievable” Bandit shook her head though an amused smile grew on her face at the whole situation. “I guess we should go try and dry off before we get sick” Silver spoke through snickers. “Probably for the best” Bandit agreed as she took a step towards where the rest of the group was before glancing behind her. Silver nodded for her to continue before following behind her. The pups were old enough to walk and play which was both good and bad for the two ruling Royals. Fern was relieved that she didn’t have to sit in the nest almost all day but these two had already proven to easily keep their parent’s paws full. “No! That’s MY stick!” Dust bared her fangs at her brother as she used her paws to try and yank the stick from her brother’s jaws. Nightshade just let out a growl and clamped his teeth tighter in response and pulled on the stick, causing Dust to stumble and almost fall in the process before regaining her balance. “Daaad he won’t give it back” Dust said as she looked over at Mulch with puppy eyes. “Nightshade, we can get you another stick if that’s what you want, your sister had that one first” Mulch said making Nightshade’s scowl, as much as she can while holding a stick in his jaws. “ ‘a’l’ale” Nightshade tried to speak while still holding the stick. “Sorry didn’t hear you” Dust’s voice held a taunting tone causing Nightshade to growl again. “Pups” Fern’s voice caused both pups to freeze what they were doing “There’s no need to fight, I have a solution” both pups looked at their mom with confusion. Fern grabbed the stick and took it before going over to a rock. She broke the stick in half, much to the pups shock, before returning and giving each pup half of the stick. “Now you can both have it” Fern said but quickly noticed that Dust did not look happy. “This isn’t my stick, I don’t want it” Dust said as she used a paw to bat it away before turning away and laying down. Nightshade flinched at the half of the stick almost hit him before looking at the two halves of the stick. “I guess Nightshade can have both of them then” Mulch said as he smiled to try and encourage Nightshade. Nightshade looked between the broken stick and his sister, his ears and tail drooped as he realized his sister wasn’t going to play anymore. “Mm-mm” Nightshade said with a shake of his head before turning the opposite direction of his sister and laying down. Mulch looked between his two pups with distress at the fact this didn’t go well at all. He looked towards Fern for help with the situation. Fern just shrugged before mouthing ‘Can’t always make them get along’ which Mulch hesitated but ultimately nodded at.1 point

We continue across the arid regions in which we found the previous entry. Here is a truly bizzarre specimen- 'Camelus volare'. Derived from: Camels Notable changes: This species is just under half the size of it's ancestors, but much lighter than half the weight. The 'hump' on their backs that would previously store fat has become a thin membrane that inflates with hot air, allowing them to drift across the sky. Their necks and legs have shortened, and since they no longer need to be able to walk long distances, their wide hooves have become tiny hooks, and their legs are so weak that they'd bareley be able to support their own body. While their general climate of residence is still arid, they now prefer savannahs rather than deserts. This is a species that on the surface may seem to do very little, but I am still fascinated by their life cycle and diet. The Camelus volare feeds on something very unusual- a rare instance of my ancestor deciding to make a change to plants instead of animals. Large, lightweight clumps of algae float at high altitudes using membranes similiar to this creature. They eat large amounts of it, getting most of their moisture from the food. The only time during their lives when they come down is during the dedicated mating season. They will partially deflate their membranes and descend in large groups onto elavated mesa areas. This partial deflation means they will move incredibly slowly, floating just above the ground and using their legs to pathetically drag themselves along. Females give birth to very underdeveloped, practically unrecognisable offspring. They give birth to huge litters that can get as large as 30 young at a time. However, despite their embryo-like appearence, they can inflate their membranes minutes after birth, and immidietley float in huge swarms to attatch themselves to the largest algae floater they can find, feeding off small pieces of it to sustain themselves until they reach a more developed stage. It is common to see a large clump completley covered in their young soon after the breeding season. However this comes at a cost to the adults. It is hard for an adult to re-inflate their membranes after deflating them to descend, and therefore, many of them either get eaten by predators, or damage their membranes too much to re-inflate. This life cycle is extremley inneficient. But, it works, and the species population is generally stable. In a way, it is beautiful that even the weirdest survival strategies can work.1 point

Despite it's camouflage I quickly discovered the large "Avisophagus Formidulosus". Derived from: Anteaters Notable changes: Larger than it's ancestors with a different colouration. It's jaw can easily open fully and it is filled with sharp teeth, allowing it to become a deadly predator. Due to their often motionless lifestyle, the legs are noticabley shorter. (lmk if this needs a warning for the teeth) It is found in areas with plenty of ground cover, but little to no trees and larger plants- so mainly in grasslands and scrublands. It's style of hunting consists of lying in wait in bushes for days, waiting for a flying creature to swoop overhead, though it will sometimes prey on other things. They can lie completley motionless for days at a time, their slow metabolism allowing them to go a long time without eating. Sometimes, as depicted in the image, they can stay still for so long that things begin to grow on their backs. Their short legs will also make them very slow movers. When prey comes by, it will fling out it's tongue at an impressive speed and reel in the prey. It will barley chew it's target, crushing it almost instantly within the curved teeth in the front of the snout, then shredding what's left in the chaotic circle of back teeth. The Avisophagus Formidulosus is almost always soliatary. They only come together to mate, and then a female will give birth to 1 or 2 young and raise them until they are close to adulthood.1 point

Due to the small impact they're beginning to leave on this world, the first species we encounter is 'Corvus Callidus' __________________________________________________________ Derived from: Crows, ravens, and other corvids. Notable changes: Feathered covering almost completley removed. Stance made more upright and wings switched out for grasping appendages. Intelligence was already high, but it was increased even more. Biology notes Corvus Callidus Are capable of walking on all fours, although it is now rare for them to do it unless climbing trees, as they are a partly arboreal species. They usually live in warm, forested areas, prefering places with more mild weather that doesn't change. Their lack of feathers makes them an easy target for other creatures, especially parasitic ones. They rely entireley on agility and intelligence. Like their ancestors they have an omnivorous diet and can eat almost anything, and are also about the same size. Culture and technology They build their homes in large, hollowed-out trees and logs. They prefer small, tight spaces with extra side enterances so that they can escape predators if needed. One of the most fascinating things about this species is that they have discovered relics and artifacts from the humans. They put these up upon pedestals and gather around them- forming a sort of religion around these snippets of the past. It's unlikely that they've discovered that their planet is artificial, as they do not yet have any true space-related technology. They adorn themselves with elaborate feathered structures, gathered from other avian-derived creatures that got to keep them. It seems like different placements and colours of these feathers have different symbolism behind them. They speak a complex languege made up of clicks, screeches, and harsh sounds.1 point

(We’re finally back! And better photo quality cause I got a new phone) The small tribe trudged through layers of snow, heading away from the balance bear as they desperately searched for food. Koral followed at the tail end of the group, carrying little Allu on her back, when she suddenly collapsed. Brilla turned towards the pink-furred nicheling worriedly. “Koral?” She whimpered. “Go.” Koral said, shoving Allu into Brilla’s paws. “I’m getting too weak to go on. I’ll distract the balance bear. Just keep going.” Koral whispered, her eyes glassy. She looked down at Allu, who squeaked curiously. “The little one’s survival is more important than mine.” “No…” Brilla gasped, shaking her head. “You can’t-“ She started, before being promptly interrupted by Koral. “Please.” She said weakly. Brilla sighed, dipping her head respectfully as she continued after the rest of the group, cradling Allu in her paws. Koral smiled slightly as she watched the group leave. Her body slowly became weaker, and she heard growling behind her. At least Allu’s safe. She thought to herself as she heard large, ursine paws behind her. Pain exploded throughout her body, and then it all faded into black. (RIP 😭)0 points
