I love birds! Birds are cool! (wait...)
That is why I want more birds in the game. All we have right now are bluebirds, which are mean, and dodomingoes, which are cute but annoying. (That doesn't mean that none of the birds I am about to suggest are annoying however...)
Considering that the jungle is practically devoid of fauna, and landscapes in general lacking in birds, I thought that colorful food sources flying from the treetops would be awesome to see! These may be harder to implement than the bluebirds though, because these birds will have to have both a 'perching' position and a 'flying' position.
ANYway, here are some ideas that I have for different bird species. Most were inspired by North American bird species because those are what I know, but interpret them however you want. Let me know what you think!
1. The Roven, inspired by ravens and robins. The males are black and red, very protective of their territory and their mate. If you happen across 2 rovens fighting, stick around because one may kill the other, leaving you with free food! These birds are a bit smaller than bluebirds. When a nicheling attacks a female roven, it will call to attract a male roven, which will deal 1 damage to said nicheling. Like the Mocking Finch, these birds can sit in trees or fly around. Males are usually found in the air, but a female with a mate will usually be found collecting grass on the ground and then building a nest in a treetop, in a nest with eggs that hatch after 2 days. After another 2 days, the birds will leave the nest to become adult rovens. They are found in swamp and grassland biomes and drop 8 food. The eggs are worth 1 food point each. In order for a nicheling to kill it in one hit, it must have at least 3 strength.
Stats: +2 eyesight, +1 hearing, +1 smelling, +2 flying, +2 speed, +1 collecting, +1 digging, +1 insect collecting, +1 strength,
2. The Mocking Warbler. Inspired by the Tropical Mockingbird and Prothonotary Warbler. Okay, this one is kind of annoying. It is slightly smaller than the rovens and it steals berries and roots. But this bird is best known for its deceptive calls. It can replicate any in-game sound effect, which can lure or scare away different entities, including prey, bearyenas, and wanderers, depending on the sound. Its regular call is a series of reedy, high pitched chirps. They are often found perching in a tree or pecking at the ground. Flying nichelings can attack it while it is sitting in the tree or when it is in the air, like a bluebird. Nichelings who cannot fly can attack it when it is on the ground, but they are harder to catch. It gives 5 food. It takes a nicheling with 2 or more strength to kill it in one hit. It is found in the grassland, jungle, and swamp biomes.
Stats: +2 eyesight, +1 hearing, +1 smelling, +3 flying, +2 speed, +1 collecting, +1 digging, +1 insect collecting, (can gain other bonus stats such as attractiveness or strong voice depending on mocking call used)
3. The Wrush. Inspired by wrens and thrushes. A tiny, quick and shy bird that is slow on the ground but rarely found down there. He is usually found hiding in trees and occasionally will flitter to nearby trees and collecting the nuts and seeds from the tree. They are found in the grassland biome, and the forest biome if that gets added (the other birds above would be found in the forest too). They drop 3 food. Nichelings must have at least one point of strength to kill it in one hit.
Stats: +2 eyesight, +1 hearing, +1 smelling, +4 flying, +1 speed, +1 collecting, +1 digging, +1 insect collecting
4. Pearons! A peafowl and great blue heron mix. They are found wading along the the shores of the jungle and grassland, and all throughout the swamp biome, where they are most common. Their long heron necks allow them to eat snails off of mangrove trees from the ground. They are also exceptional fishers, which is why they are so often found by the shore. Males have a showy display to attract females, who will then seek out a nest by the shore to lay her eggs, like the dodomingo. Females sitting on eggs will get defensive if you try to approach them, and after giving a warning screech, will give you a sharp peck! They live 10 days and drop 8 food when killed. Their eggs are worth 2 food each.
Stats: + eyesight, +1 hearing, +1 smelling, +2 flying, +1 speed, +1 collecting, +4 fishing, +2 strength
5. Owgles. A nocturnal creature that makes its moves at night, like the predators. They are very stealthy with their quiet wings, and have exceptional eyesight. Every night they come out and grab a nearby rabbil, stagmole, or unprotected baby nicheling, and then retreat back into their hidden tree. They live in forests, or grasslands and mountain biomes with more than a few trees, so you have to scout out and find them. They live for 20 days and drop 10 food when killed.
Stats: +4 eyesight, +1 hearing, +1 smelling, +5 flying, +2 strength
I'm also thinking about a savanna-specific bird, that lives on a cactus! And super colorful tropical jungle birds!
That's it for now! If you have any other great ideas for species of birds, please share!
Forest biome! Go upvote it if you haven't already!

Thanks guys. I am really looking forward to this.
@Renio2490 wasn't there a pic of prince in the racoon gaze post?
@bostonlobstah are you sure you want me to do expressions? That could end really badly XD (apart from angry I don't think I ever tried giving Nichelings proper epxressions (of course I'll try my best))
@Skysplash8 I'll keep you in mind for next time, maybe I can fit Meringue in somewhere. I wanted to draw him some day anyway (he has really become famous ^^)
Hmmmmmmmmm.........
If you are uncomfortable, you can just draw bostonlobstah instead

I have named the Platopus Smoke and the Batty boy Franky. The whims have decided to have Smoke be the Patriarch. Tribe size goes down to 8. Ladybug starved to death. Rade died of his illness.
Lurer has been born. He is Smokes younger brother, and quite adorable! He looks a lot like his father, but with better paws. Kuta has died of his illness.
We only have 6 nichelings and Talonisi is the only female left. She decided to mate with Roki a crippled, Scorpion tail wanderer we just invited in. Roki recieves White Pattern from the whims and Nimble Fingers from me.
The good news is its a girl, unfortunately baby Star is half crippled, and did not get the Nimble fingers or Scorpion tail. We really need food, so its time to start colecting. Nico has died of starvation.
Roki has invited in a female Teen with scorpion tail and Wing! Her name is DeeDee. Might need to mate her with everyone soon.
Roki mates with her as soon as she comes age. DeeDee recieves Digging Paw from the Whims and Purr Snout from me.
Couple of things just happened. First we have this Beautiful, Pink Peacock Tailed Boy. The son of Deedee and Roki. Roki died of old age right as he was born. I need a name for him. @bostonlobstah Do you have any names for PINK Peacock boys? Moving on, a nasty red rouge attacked DeeDee right as she was gunna mate with Smoke, who was just attacked by a Beareyna. Need to have and banish this rouge baby fast cause we don't have room for more now. Also, Lurer and his half sister Star have become mates. Lurer gets Purr Snout from the whims and Nimble fingers from me, Star gets No Melanism from the Whims and Nimble Fingers from me.
Hmmmm. Flamingo?

I was thinking of something very similar today
I love the suggestion!

Like others have said, I suggest that without wings it gives just +1 speed and +1 swimming, but when paired with double wings, it gives +1 swooping strength and +1 fishing. As not to overpower the bearyena hindlegs too much.

It's based on the eclipse, so I gathered that the connotation with that should warrant something- thus the pattern. The pattern provides the stealth (since I found a snake with a similar pattern that was known for being stealthy!)
I think that doesn't make any sense to be honest...patterns don't affect how quiet you are.
But still I will upvote because that head looks wicked COOL

So I took my story mode tribe to Swampy Hill, and.....
Grass Mingle was to the right.
Welp, at least it's not the savanna.

I don't think the benefits make any sense, but I do like the idea in general.

((I decided to replay AHVHC because now I know the new Grass Mingle better (Thanks, Defender bears...), I should retry it (and because I forgot some of the settings when i first played it, like the regular hind legs in the genes and the correct pregnancy duration). I'm adding a bit more lore to it, too.))
A young female sits on the shore of Grass Mingle, dazed and a bit confused as to what's going on. As she rises to her feet, she feels a wave of regret as she remembers. Her clan was in a war, and she was knocked into the sea by one of her enemies. Her clan was fighting a losing battle, and she knows that even if she finds home, they will likely be either enslaved or eliminated. She claws the sand beneath her in anger, but knows that there is no turning back now. Her name is Angrypaw, for her hot temper. She is a hardy she-cat, and knows that her only option now is to live as a rogue until she finds someone to accompany her. But one night, Starclan comes to her in a dream. They tell her that one day she will lead a great clan. She will undergo great hardship, but it will be worth it. They say that her name is now Angrystar, and she will have a clan called Dreamclan due to the prophecy coming to her through a dream. Now inspired and empowered, Angrystar is determined to be a great leader and train until she reaches such status. She grows into a bold and curious warrior.
Angrystar's first clan member is a kit who she takes in and names Stagkit, due to his handsome and elegant looks. Stagkit grows into Stagpaw, a handsome and bold apprentice.
Soon after the training of Stagpaw begins, Angrystar stumbles across a dark-furred handsome male.
"Who are you?" She asks, raising her hackles cautiously.
"Blackotter," he says, bowing his head. "I would like to join your clan, if I may."
"...Sure," she says slowly. Angrystar soon finds she has no reason to be suspicious- Blackotter is docile and even a bit naive, making him essentially harmless. However, Angrystar still sometimes gets annoyed at him, thinking him finicky or too silly.
Angrystar is even more suprised when Blackotter flirts with her.
"What makes you think that's a good idea?" she hisses to him when he gently places his paw on hers one day.
"Just that.. I think you're pretty, and I like you."
"How juvenile," she spits. Even so, she does have a soft spot for him, and they become mates.
Unfortunately, Angrystar is killed fighting off a rogue male. Thanks, defender bear. Blackotter takes over, becoming Blackstar.
The death of Angrystar traumatizes Stagpaw, and he still isn't the same when he becomes a warrior- Stagdeer. He has become more laid back rather than bold, and avoids fighting the best he can.
Stagdeer finds a lone apprentice and takes her into the clan.
"What's your name?" he asks.
"Waterpaw," she says softly. "I was born in a clan of swimmers."
"What happened to them?"
She does not answer. Whatever happened, she is a member of Dreamclan now. She is sweet and docile.
Blackstar is killed by a defender bear because apparently for some reason termite destruction is violence??
Either way, Stagstar is leader now.OH
Hitting termites IS violence
good to know

(Edited for explanation)
these are all the saves that I currently have in the slots!
this first one is one that I started but has most recently been taken over by the 5 year old. The 4 adult females are supposed to represent me and my 3 sisters (so that includes Bostonlobstah of course). I consoled her 300 food. I’m going to move/delete this save soon
I think this one is my frost lands save? The tribe of Koreme and the Digging Trucks! It’s doing fairly well since I created the starters, so don’t be repelled! Lots of rabbils!
My Skittles tribe. Has about 25 members and 600+ food. Currently alive includes the albino ape goddess Skitter. There is a big eyed ape but it is on the other side of the river of the main camp, so everyone is safe as long as they don’t cross the river!
This is my AHVHC tribe! Please try limiting the kids because I have 12+ members and around 70 food
Below is my Adams Journey tribe. Currently in Swampy Hill, there is a Grass Mingle port to the right which is odd since it’s usually savanna. There are around 30 nichelings and 600 food because I got carried away
. The tribe leader is Zion (name is an inside joke).

My family was chased till their untimely demise. It really seems up to luck here.
That's true. I lucked out by starting with such a distasteful creature. If Riperella hadn't been so hideous, her tribe would have been lunch within 10 days.

Perching on Pine Trees, Smelly Fruits, and Jungle Trees
in Feature Requests
Posted
I remember when I first when to the mountain biome, I thought my flying nichelings would be able to perch on the pine trees...but they can't? I think that perching on pine trees would be a nice addition to the game, because.....why not? And my owlges would need somewhere to sit too!
I also agree with the suggestion below, except I think that all winged creatures should be able to perch on smelly fruit trees!
...And last but not least, the Jungle Trees. Yes, I know you can perch on the side branch thingies, but wouldn't it be SO COOL to have a bunch of nests on the TOP of the tree, since the branches extend out so far! And if it's an ape tree, you'll find an ape up in the tree, and he will start attacking and come down on the next turn.
