Fangs stared at Guiding with an air of disappointment, but she knew he wasn't surprised. He'd gotten the same answer from her before.
Why? Why can't I just... I want to, but that stupid, stupid feeling... He's not even worth it. He forgot about me. So why can't I move on?
That annoying, redundant sense of faithfulness to someone who was long gone from her world was keeping Guiding from doing what she wanted. What obligation did she have to a nicheling who she didn't remember and who didn't remember her? He was to blame for her situation, right? Had he cared enough for his mate to spare her a thought after her passing, she wouldn't even be here. It was basically his fault she'd even met Fangs. He couldn't have been that good of a mate if he'd forgotten about her entirely. So why should she remain loyal to him?
And yet, here she was, refusing to start over with someone good.
23 hours ago, Chiyanna said:The spirit decided to go over and see what the two were talking about. They liked the shadow that had led them to the 'swamp' and weren't sure about the other shadows that seemed a bit threatening or unfriendly. "Hello," they said, for lack of anything else to say
Luckily her spiralling thoughts were interrupted by one of the newcomers, though when she lifted her head, she observed something almost familiar about this one.
"Oh, hi!" Fangs greeted the shadow. Guiding observed spikes on their back and realised something.
-So this is the lost one you found on the hill?

-How could we possibly keep all of them safe?
"You guided more of them last time."
-And look how that turned out. They all wandered off, no matter how many warnings I gave. I can't guide anyone and it's time I accepted it.
"I'm still here. And I'll help you keep them around. It's going to be fine. And besides, what option do we have? Just let them get lost without even trying to prevent it?"
Guiding kept her head low, but Fangs could tell he'd cheered her up at least a little. He stepped a little closer, his cold dark fur brushing against hers, and rested his head on her neck.
-Where would I be without you? she whispered.
"Still on this same swamp, waiting. And without you I'd still be out there wandering endlessly without a thought going through my head."
She leaned into his fur. Their closeness provided no warmth, but it was comforting.
"We saved each other. I wish we could stay like this forever. We make a good pair."
She tensed, then backed away a few steps and shook her head.
-You know I can't.

The wave of newcomers took Guiding by surprise and she needed a moment to gather her thoughts.
This place is going to be so much more lively than before. For a short while. So many new spirits forced to share our fate. So many more that will just end up getting lost...
She turned her attention to Fangs, who was standing around with the newcomers and speaking to one of them.
He's alright! And he also wandered off by himself again, despite me telling him multiple times not to! He could have gotten lost! That idiot! His stubborness could have cost me my only companion!
He noticed her and walked over. She frowned at him, her eyes being the only thing visible making it easy to cover up her distress. She was angry and didn't want to show him she cared at the moment.
"Ah, I see you've found a newcomer too!"
-Why did you go out by yourself?
"You were asleep. I saw the spiky one up on that hill and didn't want to bother you."
-You could have gotten lost!
"I made sure I knew which way I came from! Besides, I wouldn't have been alone. It would have been fine and we'd have found the way back eventually."
She knew from his tone that he was omitting some of the truth, but to her annoyance he did have a point.
-You should have at least told me where you were going! she retorted, but she knew it was obvious from her tone that she'd lost this fight.
"I'll wake you up next time," he reassured her. "And isn't it a good thing I went out? Otherwise we might not have found them." He pointed to the group of newcomers.
-So many at once...
"That's not even all of them. I ran into two more, but couldn't keep track of them. They seemed to be sticking together so I figured the lost one was higher priority."
-There's a lost one?
"Yeah, the one with the spikes. They seem to be recovering pretty well though."
She took a better look at the aforementioned spirit. Could it be true? Had he found someone from before? They seemed to be engaging in the discussion, but there was something off about the way they moved, observed their surroundings and reacted to things. This seemed to back up his theory. She wondered if they could be someone she'd met before.

(Hi. I'm still traveling, but right now I have internet. Might do a scene between my characters if I have the energy to, though waking up early, sitting in a car all day and spending time with my relatives really took it out of me. I appreciate you guys for not burning down the thread and I'm very proud of you.
If you're getting bored, here are some suggestions/promts you can do
-
Things to consider about your character:
- Do they miss their family? Do they wish they could go back?
- Do they think they can go back?
- If yes, maybe have them try to think of ways to go back?
- Surely there must be something out there, if I just walk far enough, right? Though that other spirit said not to...
- Help, I might be getting lost
- How do they feel about everyone they know allegedly forgetting them? Are they sad? Angry? Confused? In denial?
- If they were forgotten, there's a chance someone they knew could have been as well. Would your nicheling want to find out?
- How does your nicheling deal with the boredom? Do they try to make the most of it by doing things as close as possible to things they enjoyed in life? Do they arrange pebbles in patterns that can be felt, though barely seen? Do they explore the nearby area, attempting to find out all of its secrets? Do they just give up?
- On the topic of giving up, how far is your nicheling willing to go to try and change things?
- What's a thing your nicheling loved in life that isn't available here? How does that make your nicheling feel?
- Is it getting harder or easier for your nicheling to recall basic consepts from life like colors, light, different types of plants, etc?
- Is there anything about this place your nicheling prefers to the way it was in life?
- How does the lack of colors and light impact your nicheling?
- If your nicheling's flashbacks haven't revealed their reflection or fur color, do they struggle with body image?
- How much was your nicheling's personality affected by things that happened to them? How different are they without those memories? Do they have left over tendencies or quirks that only make sense after regaining a bit of memory?)

(No worries. Think you and Chiyanna can carry the conversation without me for a while? I need to go to sleep and after that I'm not gonna have internet connection for some time. You can pretend my characters went to catch up and settle some things while you two get introduced with YourLocalStranger's character or something)

~✶✧the Lore dump✧✶~
a.k.a. Lilytuft tries to make sure the house doesn't burn down while she's not home
The rp takes place in a realm where the spirits of dead nichelings go when they're forgotten. The spirits remember nothing from their lives, but may be familiar with basic consepts. They may eventually regain bits of memory through flashbacks, which makes their eyes flash a color that was either their eye color while alive or significant to them in some way. After a memory flash their eyes will be tinted slightly towards that color. It will get brighter with more memories, but may fade over time as things become foggy again. The eyes of nichelings who remember very little have a dim glow, this being especially apparent in lost spirits.
The eyes of others are the only source of both light and color in this place, due to it always being too dark to tell apart the colors of their surroundings. The sky is always covered by thick, dark clouds that seem to go on for forever and the light level is always stuck in a dim twilight, where it's too dark to even see the color of your own paws. It is possibly due to this that nichelings appear as dark silhouettes and despite glowing, their eyes don't actually light up the area much at all. It can be hard to tell them apart from a distance due to them not having a signature scent here. The only changing weather condition is the amount of fog in the air, and spirits may instead find themselves affected by circumstances that don't seem to apply to others, such as odd temperatures or swarms of bugs.
The landscape is mostly dry and barren moorland that goes on seemingly forever. Here and there a dry bush or some thorns can be spotted. A small stream flows down the hills from a small pond and into a swamp. The water is dark and cold, but very clear and scentless, though it gets muddy at the end. The swamp is foggy and has some old trees and reeds. There's a stump somewhere in the middle of it. The ground there is wet and the air is filled with bugs, which provide one of the few sources of sound in this place. It is unknown if the bugs and plants of this place are real/"alive" or just ambience. Some nichelings choose to believe they're real just to ease their loneliness.
If a spirit spends too long wandering by themself, they will become lost. Very little is known of what happens to lost nichelings, but the few that have made it back recall forgetting even basic consepts, losing their sense of self and loss of coherent thought. They're in a state where they're basically mindless husks with only the initiative to wander. Their attention span is very short and they have little to no object permanence. If recovery does happen somehow, the memories they had before getting lost are likely to be gone for good, though it varies based on the time they spent alone.
All this may sound boring, and that's kind of the point. With nothing to do and very little sensory input, nichelings are stuck with their thoughts, and even those can't be taken for granted. This really gets to some spirits, who choose to risk everything they have left just to find something different and end up getting lost. Most prefer to spend their time talking and trying to recall things from their lives.
"The third era" is just the "recorded history" or what is remembered by Guiding. She's not the first nicheling here and it's likely that there have been many groups of nichelings before the first era that had every one of their members get lost. Perhaps there is even another place like this swamp somewhere too far away, where spirits have gathered? Unfortunately, even if such a place existed, one would get lost long before reaching it. Maybe some lost spirits even have found it but never returned? (idk if one exists, I just came up with this while writing this post)
(I hope this helps you all keep the boring nightmare from getting out of hand while I'm gone!)

(Sorry about that. It might have been a mistake to get so many people together at once since I'm also waiting for Chiyanna, Catfishparty (and maybe even YourLocalStranger once things get to that point). How about I make my reply and my characters go away from the rest of the group to catch up so that you guys can interact with eachother without having to wait for me since I'm not gonna be online much tomorrow?)

(also can spirits be injured or die?)
(Not really, since they're already dead. However, injuries can be carried over from their life and remembering a traumatic injury can cause phantom pains. Also artistic gore, like getting "swooshed" (example image) or having permanently dripping wounds could occur in the case of a fight or something, but these won't have any lasting effect other than looking cool and maybe mild pain)

(Are there any biomes in this spirit world?)
(As far as anyone can remember, it's just the swamp and the barren moor. Perhaps there is something different out there, but no one has reached it without getting lost. The hills do go on for quite a while. Fangs was lost for a long time and never came across anything different, but there are others who have been missing for far longer than him.)

(If you have questions about the lore/worldbuilding, ask them now because I might not be very active for the next few days since I'll be going to see my grandparents. I'll also be making a guide post so things don't get too wacky but it'd be nice to get an idea of what should be included in it so if anything's on your mind, ask ahead)
(This is directed at everyone, by the way)

The spirit saw the look in the shadow's lights. Something was unnerving about it.
"I...uh...see." they said uncomfortably, "So I will think of more things? More memories? Where do these things come from? How can I picture them if they aren't in this place?"
"Yes, hopefully. They're things that happened to you long ago in a very different place."
9 minutes ago, Andromeda_ said:(is that directed at me or someone else?)
A light caught his eye and he noticed another figure nearby. This time he was fairly certain that it was someone he knew and waved them over.

'Let's go up to them!' he decided, they were too far away for any call to reach them. He limped forward towards the 3, hoping they'd be as friendly as guiding. Or at least non threatening. He looked back behind him to make sure guiding was following.
She was surprised to see the newcomer taking initiative. Many of the forgotten she'd known had been helpless, with no question as to why they'd ended up here. But this nicheling was different, unafraid of walking his own path. That was dangerous here. It had been the brave, the independent and the desperate who'd been foolish enough to stray beyond the familiar area. And then the rest had gone looking for them.
She'd have to keep this one out of trouble.
On that thought she picked up her pace and trotted after him.

He followed guiding out of the swamp, and spotted three other creatures. Maybe they'll be a bit more helpful than guiding was, he thought as he frowned at guiding. She was turned away, so she couldn't see him. Wait. No. No reason to be mean, she probably doesn't want to be here either. He thought this as he shook his head. 'Think happy thoughts' he muttered to himself, as he looked out at the 3 slihouttes. 'You're getting out of this.' He blocked the alternative out of his mind.
'I think he might be one of them.' He speculated. One of them looked to have a poison snout. Or was it Venom snout..? 'If it is him, we found him! No need to worry!' he smiled. No reason to worry at all. Just because he couldn't remember a thing about himself didn't mean anything. He was sure one of the others remembered something, no matter how small. Maybe it would help him.
-Yes, I think you're right... she said before getting lost in thought.
Where did those two come from? Why didn't he tell me he was going out?
-Fangs! she called out, well aware of the fact that the others were too far to hear her.
-
36 minutes ago, YourLocalStranger said:
'Well, I'll keep an eye out for him then!' he tried to say as helpfully as possible. No way out of this place. Well there must be. He got here somehow, so that means there's a way out.
'I'll come with you then.' For some reason, the thought of being left alone in this strange place scared him more than the thought of walking all that way again with his bad paw. Fear. He didn't need that right now, so he pushed it down, and made his ears perk up, putting a cheery lilt into his voice.
'We'll find your friend, don't worry!' he grunted slightly as he got up, but quickly masked it with a cough.
- He's gone this way. I'm not sure how long he's been out. He might still be close by.
They reached the edge of the swamp and she looked around, spotting not only Fangs, but two others as well.
