The snake should definitely at least roar and go check on its babies when it hears them exploding

While I think "no air" could be fun, I think the atmosphere should still be filled with some other gas and big masses should always have some gravity... Next to other atmosphere gasses allowing for much higher or lower densities / resistances, they may also could make for some funny and / or dangerous surprises.

I think if the drone parts would each show increasing states of breakage, it'd already be easy enough to tell their status. A little silhouette of the drone with red blinking areas could also give a general indication of where the drone is damaged.
