i notice this in most fandoms where people will latch on to any two male characters they can and ship them to no end, even if the entire main cast is female (eg steven universe, kind of) and i think its a mix of fandoms viewing everything through a shipping lense no matter what, and straight up misogyny (whether they realize it or not). they dont have time to engage with the actual plot, or comprehend *why* the player character is a monster, because theyre too focused on finding any two characters they can smash together for likes on twitter. now obviously anya isnt the *only* character in the game thats being horrifically traumatized, but you can definitely tell there is a ... way that people treat the game because of her. and it definitely contributes to the shipping frenzy. this is largely based off of my own experience so please take this with a grain of salt, but i HARDLY see this kind of treatment with female characters. obviously i *have* seen it, but the majority of fandoms will completely ignore wlw romance even if its RIGHT IN YOUR FACE as long as theres two background dudes who interact twice.
this isnt to say you CANT enjoy things through a shipping lense, but theres always a time and a place. i personally dont think mouthwashing should have the fandom it has due to the nature of the game (and my own feelings towards it) but people who do enjoy the game, CAN also enjoy shipping, as long as its done with no disrespect to the story, if that makes sense?

This kind of thing is nothing new unfortunately-the "ignoring female characters to ship/obsess over male characters" thing I mean. Hell, the grandpa of og fandom shipping Spirk actually got its feet off the ground because people didnt wanna ship Spock with his actual, female love interest (a more recent example that comes to mind is Slay the Princess-its a beautiful tragic love story...and people are out here shipping the voices????)
People have been throwing actual media literacy to the wolves in favor of shipping for years, trust me. I was on Tumblr in the 2010s...it was not pretty...I still have nightmares

but yeah its one of my biggest peeves. i dont have anything against shipping, ffs i do it all the time, and in a lot of cases it can lend to a really interesting interpretation of the source material...but the problem is that it usually ISNT that. a lot of the time people will completely ignore a piece of media's actual message or content because theyre tunnel-visioning finding a pairing of characters that a lot of the time completely goes against what the original thing was trying to say in the first place

okay absolutely nobody asked and this has nothing to do with anything i said before but
its kinda bonkers to me that Mouthwashing has like. an actual fandom. one big enough to be somewhat notable. not that theres anything wrong with that but i never imagined an indie psychological horror game would spawn THAT kind of fanbase
like this is a psychological horror game that digs into your soul and rips you open how the hell did it attract the people who think about yaoi too much???? how in the world do you play this game and your biggest takeaway is "OMG TOXC YAOI!!!"??????? honestly the idea of shipping anyone in this game is baffling to me because almost every single option sucks somehow. theres five whole characters and that includes: useless captain, 19 year old with little brother energy, world's most miserable nurse, middle aged man with a wife and literally the worst guy to ever exist ever. none of these combos appeal to me in the slightest
you know what?? if we HAVE to ship something then i suggest useless captain X midle aged man. except nobody is ready for that conversation. theyre too feeble minded for my yaoi

its 4am but i cant sleep and im still salty. decided to give the Until Dawn movie a shot since i figured i might just have my nostalgia goggles on and maybe it isnt as bad as im epecting it to be
...nevermind, its bad. not even just as an adaptation, but like. in general. its nowhere near the worst offender out of the horror movies ive seen (that title goes to Tsunambee...dear god, Tsunambee...) and ultimately its really not that awful but it really is just. there. it has an interesting concept but somehow they made it unenjoyable. i havent seen a main character so cardboard since Nick FD4, and thats saying something
anyways-WHY TF WAS THIS AN UNTIL DAWN MOVIE???? THEY HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH EACH OTHER BESIDES THE WNDIGOES, WHICH LIKE. I WOULD BARELY CALL THE MOVIE ONES THAT. WHERE IS THE LODGE???
