Personally, don't like derpsnout and will never use it unless in dire situations. Plus, with that decently big nose on it, how would it not smell?

Gills, saber tooth fangs and purr snout have big noses, and they have no smelling, so I assume the reason for this was to balance out their already powerful +2 underwater breathing, +2 strength and +1 purring. Even if derp snout had just +1 distasteful appearance like I suggested, it would still be useful, but probably not enough to justify removing smelling.

As others have said, -2 vision is pretty onerous unless nichelings can navigate by other senses.  As things stand that would mean a completely wasted day.

Like Pokestardragacraft said, blind nichelings could still move by smelling and hearing, so this would not be a problem after all.

And actually... in a thunderstorm, you're safer when you're NEAR a tree.  You're in the most danger when you're part of the shortest path between the sky and the ground.  There could be penalties for standing out in the open, perching on trees and stumps, and/or being at higher elevations than your surroundings, but you should actually benefit from being UNDER a tree's branches.

It is well documented that standing underneath a tree during a thunderstorm is dangerous, since lightning often strikes tall objects. If you are standing underneath a tree when it is struck by lightning, you could be electrocuted or hit by the explosion, and many animals are killed this way.

As an additional weather type, what about Strong Winds?  It could either shift the region all animals smell to one side, or simply decrease their smell range by 1.

I would like a strong winds weather type, and I agree that it would reduce smelling. If new weather types are implemented into the game, perhaps I will suggest it as an addition, but right now I do not want to add any more than three, or it might become too much work for the developers.

I have an idea to propose. If the devs made it so you can move in the smell and hearing modes only fog (and if you’re blind, but that’s another story), then this wouldn’t be that big of an issue. There could also be other genes to increase sight. I’ve seen people suggest firefly tails and angler fish heads which may be enhanced in the fog.

Yes, this would actually work perfectly. Blind nichelings could still move by smelling and hearing, and the same effect could be applied in fog. It would only be temporary anyways, so at the most it would just be a minor inconvenience.

While more weather would be nice in the game, I do not like this idea. If it was implemented into the game, I feel fog/thunderstorms/hail would annoy me.

@orangesunrise Maybe this could be one of the toggleable things you can choose when you start a Sandbox tribe. As for Storymode, it would probably depend on what the developers would think would be best.

Since the more customization options for sandbox mode thread has so many upvotes, I think it is almost certain to be implemented into the game, in which case new weather types could be a toggleable feature. Whether or not to include new weather types in story mode, like Skysplash8 said, would probably be up to the developers to decide.

@Ancestor Nature If sight is reduced by 2, then nobody can see anything! (Normal eyesight gives sight, if you take away 2, that's 0, making them pretty much blind)

Also, for the thunderstorms, maybe if lightning hits a tree, it will turn into a burnt stump? (It would set it on fire as well)

For hail, maybe if the creature has 1+/2+ Defense, they wouldn't be able to get stunned?

I actually did not consider this, and I do not know what to do about it. Reduced sight is such an important part of fog, and being without it would be a shame. Even if the reduced sight was -1 instead of -2, it would still render shortsighted nichelings blind. Should it just not reduce sight at all?

What if there aren't enough trees for your nichelings to hide under? The rest will be left in the open

Islands usually have plenty of trees, so I think this would only be a problem for larger tribes. Unfortunately, there is nothing else to use for shelter. Hail does have an advantage, however, and that is that it would have a chance to affect other animals and not just your own, leading to some interesting situations.

  6. I think the fur colors for nichelings actually are realistic, at least in the sense that they all appear in nature (except for pink). They are too bright, however, which may give them the appearance of being unrealistic, when in actuality I think it is just the game's style.

  7. Currently, wild pregnant female nichelings wander around the world and never have their babies. Instead, once pregnant, they should seek out the nearest nest, and stay there until their baby is born the next day. The baby would be born wild instead of automatically being invited into the tribe, and would follow their mother like the friendly bearyenas do. This would offer good story potential for reuniting with your lost child, and could potentially save a tribe if you do not have food to invite the wild female nicheling with.

  8. A scroll for the family tree has actually already been suggested in the Family Tree thread. It has gone unnoticed recently because it was suggested on April 7th and fallen back to page 7, but it is still there. I want it very much, almost more than anything else, and I hope it is implemented this time.

  9. I think they should be called rogue females for consistency, and I like the idea that they would steal your unattended baby nichelings. This would work well with a new carrying mechanic, as suggested in the Niche Scruff Carrying thread. Since baby nichelings are helpless, they would not be able to stop a rogue female from carrying them away, and could only be saved by teens or adults. If a rogue female succeeds in stealing a baby nicheling, they would leave your tribe and become wild, opening up the possibility of encountering them again the future. I think this would complement rogue males, who impregnate your female nichelings with unwanted children, whereas rogue females would steal the children you do want.

  10. Currently, derp snout is the most dominant head gene, with +2 smelling and +1 distasteful appearance. I feel this is overpowered, and devalues short snout, which only has +2 smelling. While it is true that other head genes like big nose and cracker jaw are also more useful than short snout, with +3 smelling and +2 smelling and cracking, they are also more difficult to obtain, and can only be unlocked in the mutation menu after certain requirements are met. I think this is fair, but derp snout has no such requirements, meaning it is available from the beginning and can be used instead of short snout with no penalties. Since derp snout is supposed to be an unwanted gene, I think it should have a disadvantage that is not just cosmetic.

My preference is that it offers just +1 distasteful appearance and no smelling, but I would like to know what everybody else thinks.

  11. I would really appreciate new syllables for randomly generated names because they are the only ones I use. I have seen many instances of duplication, and although new syllables would not fix the problem, it would help. A system to prevent duplication was mentioned in the first community voting, and I hope it is still being considered.

  12. I would like more idle animations for nichelings, but I think they would have to be simple. Complex animations might not work well since nicheling models are static, but simple animations like ear twitching, nose licking and yawning would be perfect. A sleeping animation might even be possible, since it would only activate after a nicheling uses up all of their turns.

    @ChasingNyx
As soon as the update is on the main branch (which will be in about 3 weeks I hope), we will start the official community voting.
I exspect quite a few new forum members from this too ^^
People will then have about 2 weeks to cast their votes.
After that, we will look at the  top 10 or maybe top 20 suggestions.
Our team will discuss how much effort the suggestions take.
Depending on the effort and how high an idea ranked, we will choose one big new feature.
And if there are some smaller ones that are easy/quick to add, we'll maybe choose some of them too.

That is good to know, thank you.

  14. I like the idea of scent marking, and I imagine that it would work by giving most objects a new interaction called “Scent Mark”, which would allow you to mark the object with your scent for a few days. Scent marked objects would glow green when smelling, indicating that it belongs to your tribe, while yellow scent marked objects would indicate wild nichelings, and red scent marked objects would indicate rogue males.
