it really isnt (at least in my opinion) because a) usually the book was Fricking Boring and i do not care about the characters enough to know how to write them properly, b) you have to go down a list of bullet points the teacher gave you ("this happens!" "include a description of the environment!" "include at least 2 dialogues!" "write about this premise specificallly and youre not allowed to do anything else!") c) this isnt like. optional. you HAVE to write fanfic to pass d) you have to write this AT SCHOOL on a piece of paper. in 45 minutes.
