Star listened to what Javai said and took a few deep breaths before straightening his posture. "Sorry, you're right panicking won't help anyone" He agreed as he forced himself into a calm and confident stance to come off as calmer than he was. "Yeah you're right! There must've been a really strong bearyena that scared them off or something, I'm too important to leave behind" He said with a nod before standing up. "That's the weird part, in all my life they've never moved, always been in the exact same territory" He said, still confused why they would leave when they had strong warriors to defend the tribe and ensure its safety. "But! If we follow their scents we'll have to find em eventually" He said before starting to follow their faint scent trail.

'There we go. You're much more useful to yourself when youre calm.' Javai followed Star, sniffing for the tribe. He smelt a bit more than Star did, due to his big nose. 'I think they went that way.' He pointed towards a thicket of bushes.

Sharp wrapped his large tail around Thief to try and comfort him. "It was just an accident. It's not your fault. I'll still be your friend, just like you stuck with me after I told you what I did..."

(why do your nichelings always get into dramatic situations near other nichelings lmao)

Sharp heard a shrill screech, and noticed a nicheling with strange cyan-green eyes. "Uh, should we go help them?" He turned to the group.

'...Thank you Sharp.' Thief smiled again, and this time it was a genuine smile. He leaned against Sharp for a second and gave him a quick hug. Thief still felt like it was his fault, but he felt so much better after telling someone. It was like a weight was lifted off his heart. He didn't have to face this alone.

Thief heard the screech as well, and turned towards the sound. 'I mean, yeah!?' he answered Sharps question. The swamp was within sight now. 'Hey, uh Nervous guy? Could you take the kid over to guiding in the swamp? Or you can come with us if you like. I'm gonna go check out who that is. Sharp, are going back to the swamp or coming with me?'

"Yeah you're right! If I'm careful they'll never notice" Star grinned at the thought of a bit of rebellion against his parents, he would love to be able to defend himself so he wouldn't need a guard by his side at all times. "Boring" He joked after hearing Javai's answer to his question. He also noticed the lack of noise, becoming a bit worried. "Well now we're at our old camp so they have to be-" His words stopped at he looked around and saw no sign of any nichelings at all. Sniffing the air he perked up at their scent but just as quickly deflated as he noticed that it was really faint.

"T-the scents are faint...B-but maybe I missed them!" Star said outloud though it was more to himself than anything else. He then started looking and sniffing around, becoming more and more tense at the fact the scents were continually faint. "They've gotta be somewhere around here, they wouldn't...they wouldn't abandon me, I'm the future leader! I'm too important for that, they need me" His words were getting frantic as every area around his home was turning up with scents so faint he couldn't even figure which scent was which nicheling. "I know mom was going to have another pup soon but I'm the oldest! I have more experience and know what I'm doing, they wouldn't replace me!" His words were extremely frantic at this point.

Sorry for the late response I thought I responded before but just noticed I did not-)

'Hey! Calm down, we'll look for them, alright? Breathe, panicking won't help you.' Javai spoke calmly, trying to calm Star down. 'They wouldn't abandon you. You're their future leader. A bearyena or something must have attacked, and they had to leave.' Javai wasn't exactly sure of that, but it was possible. 'Does your tribe move around a lot? Do you know where they were heading next?'

"Looks like you're learning about yourself already." He smiled at the new nicheling. He then noticed something seemed off about Thief. "Are you ok?" He whispered to him, trying not to be loud so the others wouldn't hear.

'Fine.' He muttered. 'Just had a... Strange memory flash.' for a second Thief considered whether or not to tell Sharp. But Thief needed to get it out, and he trusted Sharp. He took a deep breath. 'You know that nightmare I had earlier. When I ran into the swamp? It was about a group of nichelings who called me horrible things, and said I deserved this, then they broke my paw. I thought it was because I did something awful, and i was right.' Thiefs voice was bitter. 'Just now I had a memory flash where someone attacked me and a nicheling I knew. I tried to fight off the attacker, and I was angry and I tried to push him off a cliff. But the nicheling I knew tried to stop me, and I accidentally pushed them off the cliff instead. I deserved this.' Thief lifted his paw. Then he hung his head in shame. 'I understand if you don't want anything to do with me anymore.'

"Well, I don't exactly remember which one I followed I just remember them all. From Dukunno to Kukir and everyone in between." She said to Thief.

'I'm sure you'll remember soon. I've been slowly getting my memories back, and others have as well.' Thief tried to smile, heading towards the swamp.

"Sure, it sounds fun!" She said excited. "Also, I wasn't a follower of Dukur or at least I don't remember if I was. Dukur is the god of judgement and sends you to the god you served in life just so you know." If only I could remember this much about myself guess the gods are really important to me. She thought.

'Really? And which god did you follow?' he asked. He was glad the young nicheling seemed a bit less scared now. Thief turned to the others, checking if they were all ready to go back.

She walked up to the nichling called Thief. "Are you sure I will go to Dukur?" She asked with a glimmer of hope in the white eyes.

'I... Of course.' Thief smiled. 'I'm sure you were a good follower, I'm sure you'll go to him after this is all over.' Lying made him feel bad, but this nicheling needed to be reassured, needed to be told there was something more than this dark and empty landscape. And who knows, maybe she will go to Dukur. Thief didn't know himself where he would go after all this. Would he just... Stop existing? He didn't know whether he believed in any gods when he was alive. 'Do you want to go to the swamp?'

So much was happening, and Sharp was overwhelmed. He didin't like arguing. The feeling felt familiar.

"SHUT UP!" He yelled, before realizing what he said. "Crap! I didn't mean to say that!"

Thief flinched. 'Sorry! I'm sorry!' he said quickly, shrinking back into himself. Sharp said he didn't mean to say that. 'I-It's fine. I understand. I kind of deserved that. I shouldn't have been arguing.' Thief spoke quickly, and he tried to smile, but it looked strained.

'Listen, we should just... Let's just get the new nicheling back to the swamp.' He said, turning back to the new one. 'we're going back to the swamp, there's more nichelings there. Do you want to come? It'll be safer.' Thief asked her. He tried to appear friendly, though she probably wasn't very convinced because of all the arguments that had been going on. I'll get her to the swamp. Then I'll go and be alone. Alone. Alone. Alone. Thief thought of the words over and over again. He felt like he was pulled tight, and if one more thing happened he would snap. Why did he have to be so insufferable? He didn't blame Sharp for getting mad, of course he did. And the memory kept replaying in Thief's head, making him feel even worse.

"I do have some cousins, but they seem to want the role just as much as I do, I guess asking wouldn't hurt though so I'll see" Star said with a shrug though he hoped one of them would rather take the role. That's not to mention how angry his parents might be if he did that, though maybe if nothing else he could wait until they pass then ask if another nicheling would want the role so he could roam free and live his own life.

"Yeah that makes sense, sometimes you probably don't have the time to think of a more rational solution and I suppose sometimes the solution itself isn't" He reasoned as he thought about it, he never really had to think about it too much seeing as while being the future leader wasn't something he wanted it did mean he almost always had another nicheling to protect him. 'Wish I could practice fighting and defending myself more but I bet they wouldn't let me' He thought as he remembered an attempt to bring it up when he was a bit younger.

He scanned the area after hearing Javai's question and then perked up. "Yea we're almost there actually! Just a bit more walking. I told you we'd get there" He bragged as his posture changed to a more confident one. "What's your favorite thing to eat?" He asked mostly to pass the small amount of time it'd take to get to their destination.

'You could practice fighting and defending yourself in secret. Who said you have to follow the rules.' Javai grinned. When Star said they were almost where the tribe was, Javai was a little confused. 'I hear nothing. Are you sure they're nearby?' Star asked some question to pass the time, but Javai was growing a bit more worried about this tribe every second. 'My favourite food is food.' He said, before walking a bit ahead. Still nothing.

"Its called lying and you can't be sure of ANYTHING in this place. Thats something, even YOU know" The spirit snarled and turned away to the swamp.

Thief bristled. He knew the other spirit was being completely unreasonable. He knew this. And yet he burned with anger at her. For a second he thought of leaping at her, driving her face into the dirt, before he realised just how violent that thought was. He turned away, his rage fading into shame. Suddenly he was somewhere else. His eyes flashed a bright red.

He was in a meadow. A cliff nearby. An older nicheling beside him. She had dark fur, purple eyes. She was smiling at him. There was another nicheling nearby. He walked up. Started yelling. Why was he yelling? The nicheling beside him tried to walk away, but the one who approached them unsheathed his claws. He was raising them towards the dark nicheling! Before he knew what he was doing, he launched himself at the attacker, rage burning like a fire inside him. He fought with the attacker, but he knew he was losing. A spit of the moment thought made its way through him, the cliff, just push him off the cliff! He moved quickly, and just as the attacker was about to fall off, the dark nicheling ran forward.

'NO!' she screamed, trying to stop him. But Thief was already going too quickly, and before he knew it, the dark nicheling toppled over the cliff as she tried to push the attacker out of the way. Thief stopped fighting. He felt hollow. That nicheling was important to him, he knew that, and now she was gone. The attacker gave a sneer, and brought Thief with him. Thief didn't know where they were going. The memory ended as suddenly as it started.

Thief felt awful. Is this why he was banished and hurt by his tribe? He pushed the memory away for a second. Think about it later. He turned back to the others, all trace of anger and sadness gone from his face. 'I think we should get back to the swamp.'

'It's called trying to be kind to and reassure a nicheling younger than yourself, even though you don't have all the answers. You probably wouldn't know what that is.' He snapped. 'Besides, wherever you go afterwards is surely better than here.'

"I guess you would have to just leave if you didn't have the means to fight them" Star responded to that first part, he guesses there are advantages to living in a tribe, he and his tribe never ran but sometimes he wished they did.

His eyes sparkled and a small smile appeared at the mention of the freedom, even if it was dangerous the thought of being an adult and going wherever he wanted whenever he wanted was oh so tempting and nice, but then his smile fell as he remembered his position. "You see...I'd love to do that, but I can't" He shrugged as if it didn't bother him as much as it did. "In my pack there's a tradition that the oldest child of the pack leader has to be pack leader when the current leader passes, and I'm the only child my parents have so" He continued as he felt envy try to wiggle its way into his heart again, though this time he simply let it be.

After listening to what Javai said about the tribe on the volcano Star snorted. "You could've died if you got unlucky, though I guess if I was in that situation I guess rational thoughts aren't your first choice" He said, not hearing what Javai said under his breath

'Do you have any other family? Aunts, uncles, cousins? Anyone who could take the role if you left? It's your life. To be forced into a role you don't want, and then to live like that for the rest of your life is... I can't imagine something like that.' Javai frowned. He felt bad for Star.

'Rational thoughts are rarely ever my first choice.' He said deadpan. 'Sometimes what it takes to survive isn't always rational.'

'Are we anywhere close to where you think your tribe might be?' he asked. They had been walking for a while.

"Quit threatening the newbie. Cant you ease off the facts rather than throwing them in her face?" The spirit hissed into Thief's ear

'I-I'm sorry! I didn't mean to frighten her!' Thief frowned. He felt a little guilty, especially because the nicheling seemed to be freaking out slightly. He really wasn't used to this.

"But when you die your supposed be judged by Dukur and his servants then go to the god you lived as the servant of in your life it's what I was taught..." She stopped wondering where that came from.

'Well, this place is where you go when people... Forget.. About you. Right? So once you find your name, or so I've heard from other nichelings here, you get out. Then you'll go to Dukur. I'm sure of it.' Thief tried to reassure her.

Star listened to the first part of what Javai said with curiosity as they continued walking. "Bearyena must've been rough to deal with, but at least you probably had less rules to follow!" He said in a joking tone, though there was an undertone of bitterness. He knows he's safer with a tribe but it seems like he had a list of rules to follow at all times, and it had already interfered with the way he interacted with Javai seeing as they were ingrained into him. He wonders what it'd be like to have no rules and no responsibilities other than survival. 'I wish I had that much freedom' He though with envy clawing at his heart, which he forcefully shoved away.

"Yea it is, I haven't seen or smelled a single bearyena and there's a bunch of food!" He chirped, happy for the distraction from his thoughts. "Any places other than that deep woods that are dangerous on this island?" He asked Javai as he never really ventured beyond his tribe's borders before now, which made him a bit excited before remembering he was going back.

'Oh, bearyena were a nightmare. You had to constantly sleep with one eye open. And if you even caught a whiff of one, you had to leave the area immediately if you even wanted a chance at surviving.' Javai said calmly. He had a lot of nightmares where he just couldn't run or fight fast enough, and that was the end of him. Bearyena were awful. Everyone knew that.

'But yeah, there are no rules except the ones you make yourself. Never joined a tribe partly because rules never sat right with me.' He heard of what it was like in a tribe, the rules, the leaders, the lists. Javai hated it. 'I'm more of a free spirit.' He joked.

'But you can get that kind of freedom. Sure its, dangerous. Very dangerous. But it's also amazing. Only very extreme circumstances ever made me consider joining a tribe. Once your grown, you can leave your tribe you know.' Javai smiled wistfully. He remembered when he was a bit younger, and he had wished he could have been part of a tribe. He and Star back then would have been polar opposites. 'I think it's good that you grew up in a tribe.' Javai offered. 'You can grow up safely, and learn things. Then when your older you can leave, and have the freedom you want.'

'And about the dangerous places...' Javai racked his brains for anything interesting or useful to say. He wasn't used to long conversations with other nichelings, and didn't want to bore Star to death. 'Well near the burning volcano, I went there once, theres a tribe that call themselves the Kamji. They're a very small tribe, but they think that every year they have to sacrifice someone to the volcano. Strange really. At one point they wanted to sacrifice me, but I got out!' Javai laughed at that last bit. It wasn't hard escaping them. 'All I had to do was crawl into a hollow log and roll down the mountain. They couldn't catch me then!

'Actually, it was a miracle I didn't die.' He said under his breath as he realised only now that that was an extremely stupid thing to do.

  14. 1 hour ago, Mythic said:

"Who are you two? Where are we?" she asked

'Uh.. We're in a strange place you go to after you die. And everyone forgets about you.' Thief was never very tactful. 'I'm Thief, that's Sharp, and that's Nervous Brother. Silly names, I know, but they're only temporary.'

Thief smiled welcomingly. 'You can come along with us if you like. There's a swamp down that way, we were just heading back.' Thief actually wanted to go further, but the others wanted to go back. And there was no reason in dragging a new nicheling away from the only safe place around here. Just then, he realised he forgot about the weird nicheling who kept throwing rocks. 'And that's uh...' He thought for a moment. 'I actually have no idea. Sorry. You never introduced yourself.' He apologised to her. He winced slightly at how rude that sounded.

Star huffed a bit at Javai laughing at his attempts to cover up how badly he phrased that, it wasn't a truly angry or irritated sigh, more of an embarassed one, but he was happy that it seemed to cheer Javai up if nothing else. Then he stared at him with shock after hearing Javai say he's kind. He acts big and like he's the best but actually getting complimented is rare for him, so he was a little stunned. He quickly recovered though "Of course, I know that" He said in a smug tone to hide how surprised he actually was.

"Alright, I'm sure it won't take long" He said as reassurance to Javai and himself, and also perhaps to try and act like he knew better than he actually did. Upon hearing the last part of what Javaj said he bristled a bit at the thought of that nicheling, he'd already decided he wanted to stay as far from them as he possibly could. "I can't blame you, I wouldn't go anywhere near that needlessly cruel nicheling" He said honestly, and hoped that nicheling would STAY away from them.

"Well anyways the sooner we look the sooner we find them!" He said as he suddenly got up and started walking in a direction that he thinks he came from at one point, hoping it was the right way. "Why don't you have a tribe?" He asked quite bluntly, not really thinking about the potential of it being rude.

Javai followed Star, Star had a little more idea where he was going anyway. When Star asked why he didn't have a tribe, Javai shrugged.

'I was born outside one. Lived without a tribe all my life. Didn't really want to join one, too much hassle. But I guess I have to now.' Javai said shortly. He didn't remember his parents. He knew they cared for him when he was very young, but that's all. They question of who they were had plagued him since he was small, but as he got older he learned to push the question away. A few rabbils flitted past.

'It's very peaceful here.' Javai mentioned. Not like the coconut desert.

This playthrough is one of the best written ones on the forums. The story is spontaneous yet well put together plot-wise

Wow thank you! I've read some really good playthroughs on here, so thank you so much!

Also ill let you guys in on a secret. I literally plan for the story when I'm at school, then I do no rough work, no editing or anything, and just word vomit onto a page. And somehow that makes a coherent storyline with interesting characters. Yeah I have no idea how it works either.

Star didn't respond to that first comment as he was worried the healing fruit wouldn't do its job, though that's never happened before. He felt himself relax as he saw the nicheling eat the fruit and saw the injuries heal and stop bleeding.

"It's fine er- Of course I would! I'm very kind" He said as he puffed up with pride, it was a bit of a habit from the way he was raised in his tribe, seeing as he was important there. 'Alright not the best way to phrase that' He thought and internally cringed a bit but didn't let it show externally."That's an odd name" He died a bit inside as he quickly raced to rephrase that "Er uh good odd! It's not something normal you'd hear in my tribe though-" He just shut his mouth accepting that he just kept making it worse.

After hearing the nicheling's question his tail started to repeatedly tap against the ground, a nervous habit that he had gained. "Yea! But I can't exactly show you right now because I may have um jumped across some stones and have no idea how to get back" He said in an oddly awkward tone compared to how he'd been talking, but it was a bit embarrassing to admit if he was honest. "Why do you ask?" He deflected the question onto Javai as a way to ignore his own embarrassment.

Javai laughed out loud at the fact that Star was trying to say that his name was odd. It wasn't a cold laugh like earlier, it was warm. 'It is an odd name, don't worry about it. And yes, you are very kind.' Javai couldn't help but smile at the strange nicheling. Once Javai heard that Star lost his tribe, he deflated a little. It would take a little time to find them.

'We can go find your tribe then. No reason sitting around in an open meadow.' He said, back to his usual serious self. Star asked why he wanted to join the tribe, and Javai bristled a little at the thought of being part of a tribe. But he had to do it. 'You know that nicheling earlier? The one who tried to kill me? Yeah, she's been chasing me since the deep woods.' He scowled. 'I'd like some protection against her, at least for a little while.'

After a while of trodding along and finding nothing interesting, the nervous nicheling finally said, "Let's go back to the swamp, it seemed more interesting." Passing one of those plants from earlier, they then said, "Did you know that these things used to have color? In memories, in the before death?"

'I wonder what colour they were.' Thief was slightly unsettled by the fact he had already forgotten what colours things should be. He knew the sky was meant to be colourful, but he had no idea what colour.

'If you want to go back, go ahead. I'm sure there's something out here.' Thief said, determination in his voice.

    9 hours ago, Mythic said:

"Hello" she called to the nichlings

Thief glanced over. 'Well this place is suddenly crowded.' He said with surprise. 'Hello! Are you new here?' he called back to the other nicheling.

'See, we did find something.' Thief nudged the nervous one.
