What came after that?

Simple: Absolute panic and chaos.

Nobody really knew how to fight these things, and the fact that most hadn't even seen one of them before seriously added to the fear.

Everybody scattered, and the monsters followed suit.

The jungle left a lot of dead ends.

Pocky was almost completely unconcerned about this situation.

He simply sat there, tail curled around his paws, and listened to the rain.

Wildfire was next to him, though she was a lot more panicked and yelling something that he couldn't hear or really cared about.

Oh, wait-

A couple of them were coming his way.

That's an issue.

He stood up, flinching as his ears finally decided to pick up on something that wasn't the rain. Screams. Lots of them.

"Do you know how to fight these?!"

"Do you?!"

Pocky watched as Wildfire and Chardonnay backed up as the monsters got closer, standing on the edge of the river.

He didn't move a muscle, tilting his head as one of the monsters was mere inches away.

Wildfire pulled him back, staring at him like he was insane. Maybe he was.

It's not normal to be unafraid of death.

He had an idea.

Without a word, he grabbed Chardonnay by the scruff, pulling him forward to sit in front of the other two. Before he could say anything, Pocky curled his tail around, pricking Chardonnay in the throat with the tip.

The other nicheling slowly slumped down, losing conciousness from the venom. Just as he seemed to fall asleep, Pocky tossed him to the monsters, watching as they stopped.

Within heartbeats, the creatures were going to town on the body, tearing it apart with gorey ripping sounds and snappng the bones under their teeth.

Wildfire was frozen, staring at the monsters. Pocky simply nudged her, gesturing to follow as he ran towards a safe space.

"Wh-what?! Why?-Why would you do that?!" She hissed at him when they stopped by the rocks, something in her eyes...what was it?

Black. Why is she feeling black? Black isn't good.

She looked angry-very angry, in fact.

Like how thorns feel on your pads, how mud smells, how-

He shrugged, feeling a rush of orange-green-purple and purple-red run through his veins.

"He didn't feel anything."

Pocky and Wildfire weren't the only ones having issues with these things.

Statter, Almond and Humenke (haha, try pronouncing THAT one) were all huddled in a group by the tree, Statter at the front. She was strongest, and had armored body, so if they bit her she might end up fine.

No matter how much she hissed and snarled though, they just came closer. In all honesty, she was too scared to swipe at them. They could easily grab her paw.

Things just kept looker more and more dire. Being backed up towards a rushing river by zombies was never a good thing.

Almond considered trying to reason with them-they couldn't be all bad. They were nichelings once too, with morals and feelings.

She could get through to them.

Just as she started to take a step forward, something caught her eye.

One of the monsters looked strangely familiar-dark brown fur, lean body, a big nose-had she...seen him somewhere?

"Walnut?!"

She gasped, pushing Statter to the side and running up to the monster. She didn't hear the desperate pleas of the two nichelings behind her to come back.

Without hesitation, she sprinted to the monsters, stopping to hug that specific one.

She couldn't feel more relieved. Her brother was here, and he was safe! She thought she may never see him again!

So...why was he biting her?

That...

That wasn't very nice of him.

And Everest?

He wasn't exactly having fun either.

All the noise-the screams, the snapping bones, the desperate cries as one of his tribemates was torn apart-

He couldn't take it.

He just stood there. Frozen.

The trees. They towered above him, like a dark nicheling with evil intentions-

A...a dark nicheling he knew.

Where...where did he know them? Why were the trees so tall? Why was he here?

Scanning the field of monsters and nichelings, he finally registered where all the screams were coming from.

Chardonnay was dead. Definitely dead-you can't exactly get eaten alive by monsters and not be dead.

Bastille-where was he? He was gone, or at the very least he couldn't see him.

Almond and Statter...

Statter was okay, but Almond...she looked to be one paw in the grave already. He knew what that bite did to people.

But where were...there were more screams?

Oh, Tippip. She was trying to fight, but one on two wasn't good odds. Poor girl.

He couldn't watch anymore.

Maybe it was time to stop making things worse.

He wasn't even registering his actions at this point.

All he really remembered was a blur of running, jumping at the monsters, leading them away one by one...

And suddenly, he was by the riverbank. Dozens of eyes one him-blind ones. The eyes of something rotten and long dead.

They were all there. They all wanted him.

Dozens of eyes...

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The pit.

Possibly one of the worst places you could end up.

So why was he here?

Eyes...oh. Right.

Hateful eyes. From someone in particular.

"Murderer!" He heard someone shout. He didn't know who, but it was obviously directed at him.

Well, they weren't wrong. He was. But that doesn't mean he meant to do it.

But they wouldn't listen...

I mean, how do you accidently kill three children? Right?

Hateful eyes...

"Everest."

His eyes shot up, and he couldn't stifle the fear that rose when he saw her. The leader. The one that everyone was so terrified of, and for good reason.

Pression was dangerous.

"You have been tried with the murder of three of your tribemates, and have been proven guilty. Your punishment awaits."

With a nod of her head, Everest felt one of the guards shove down on his back, holding him securely to the ground. He couldn't fight back, even he wanted to.

Another nicheling was coming, holding a stick. Why was he holding a stick?

Was that...fire?

Wait...

No-

Suddenly he felt like fighting back-what were they doing?

He was just a kid! Why were they doing this-

--------------------------------------------

Did he really just get sent into a flashback right now?

Perfect timing. Great.

The monsters were still there, though they seemed uninterested in his silence, starting to wander back towards the others.

He couldn't let that happen.

Opening his mouth for the first time in a while, he slowly backed towards the edge of the river. The monsters immediately turned.

"C-come and get me!"

And they did.

Despite the sharp pain in his throat, his tired legs and the blood that he coughed up everytime he opened his mouth-

He ran.

He jumped over the river, watching as the monsters fell into the rushing waves and were swept away. Some made it across, and went directly for him.

He let them-disappearing into the jungle and leading the creatures away from his home and his family.

Maybe the others would have known his fate if he could scream.

Things calmed down eventually, though the event left many either injured or dead.

Bastille was still nowhere to be seen, and though the thought angered them, it seemed that he had abandoned them. For good.

Almond was suffering a bit more than some of the others.

"It's okay mom! You'll be okay!"

Wildfire crouched at her side, trying and failing to hold back the dozens of tears welling up in her eyes. Statter, Humenke, and Zaptide were all close by.

Pocky watched a few feet away, and nobody could truly tell what his thoughts were. He just stared.

Capst-Tippip's daughter and the only one with healing abilities now that Bastille was gone-was darting around from nicheling to nicheling, trying her best to treat wounds and calm everyone down. Poor kid, she was trying her best, but she was still young and scared herself.

She finally made her over to Almond, gently pushing Humenke aside and leaning down to examine the wound on her chest. It was a bite mark, oozing blood and already bearing a green hue, presumably from infection.

Capst looked at it for a few seconds. Then a few moments. Then minutes.

She raised her head, and dipped it sympathetically to Wildfire.

"I'm sorry, but the damage is done..."

Everyone was silent for a few heartbeats, presumably processing what they just heard.

Statter broke the silence.

For the first tie that anyone had seen, the female started...crying. She dug her claws into the ground, repeatedly shaking her head, eyes shut tight. Nobody knew what to do.

Wildfire just cried with her. Almond watched, eyes clouded and confused. She didn't understand what was happening. Old age added on to the bite didn't help her seem coherent.

Wildfire glanced back at her brother. He didn't show any emotion, still staring at the group with that strange look in his eyes.

She wanted to snap his neck.

"We can't leave her here." Zaptide spoke up, his voice cracking slightly at the end. He was always so stoic-it was strange to see him emotional. "She'll turn soon, and we don't know how to kill these things. The only reason we're even alive is because Everest...saved us."

They knew he was right. She couldn't stay there. Everyone else in their tribe that had passed wasn't going to turn, having been torn apart by the monsters.

"I'll take her down to the beach."

Statter carefully grabbed Almond, lifting her over her back and turning to walk away.

Before anyone could say otherwise, she had already left.

----------------------------

"What is wrong with you?!"

Pocky blinked, tilting his head. His sister was angry at him.

She looked...

Looked...

Hm...

Red-Green-Orange, perhaps?...

Irritated. Furious. Dangerous.

"You killed someone! You-you murdered Chardonnay!"

"He was a weak link, was he not? He was reckless, and self-destructive. I was thinking ahead."

Why was she still mad? He explained himself. She shouldn't be mad.

"You're-you're just selfish!" She hissed, her voice starting to break. Pocky couldn't pinpoint if she was lashing out because of their mother, or if she was truly angry at him.

That's a silly statement. Very silly.

"How can one be selfish if they don't care even for themselves?"

"Prove it then! Prove that you're all high and mighty and don't care what happens to you!"

Pocky flicked an ear. Did she really want him to do that? Now wasn't a good time to be losing more tribe members.

But if she insisted.

He shrugged, briefly scanning the clearing, then stood up.

He made his way over to a plant-the dangerous ones. The angry ones with sharp teeth that everyone treaded so carefully around. The ones that smelled like sweet honey and summer days.

It looked hungry.

He could feel the stares of several of his tribemates burning through his back, but he payed no mind. He payed no mind to the pawsteps rushing to pull him away or the shocked cries of his siblings as he was rapidly pulled in.

It was just as painful as he imagined it.

Maybe a bit more crowded, though.

Statter stopped just short of the water, staring across the vast expanse. It was a nice view.

Almond didn't stir as she gently placed her on the sand-the only indication that she was even alive was the shallow, harsh breathing as her chest rose and fell.

"What are we out here for?"

Statter sighed, sitting down next to the delirious nicheling. "We're just...here for the view." She responded, reaching out her paw and gently running her claws through the fur on Almond's spine. It was matted and unkempt, like she hadn't groomed in weeks.

Almond hummed, using what seemed like the last of her remaining strength to shuffle closer. Her eyes were starting to get really cloudy-turning milky white and seeming to slowly drain of any humanity or emotion.

It hurt. To see her like that. To know what was going to happen.

"I'm tired..."

"I know."

She tried desperately to not let her feelings take over, but the longer she watched Almond stare blankly at the setting sun...

"I'm sorry I couldn't save you..." She whispered, settling to lay down next to the other nicheling. Her voice was broken-scratchy and shattered like an old record. She couldn't hold back the tears.

Finally losing it, she pressed against Almond, burying her muzzle in the unkempt fur and crying.

"I'm so sorry..."

She felt a paw-a cold one-touch her own, and turned her head slightly to see Almond's face-smiling, her head tilted best it could laying on the sand, eyes cold and white and dead...

"Save me...from what?..."

Silence fell over the two after that, and Statter knew that Almond was gone. For good.

The world was cruel.

She didn't move a muscle. Even as growls rose over the gentle sounds of waves lapping at sand, and the husk of what Almond used to be shuffled beneath her.

Maybe she was tired of living anyway.
