Nicheling Preservation Programme 2020

Welcome to the Nicheling Preservation Programme 2020!

This programme has been started in order to save the genetic diversity of the much endangered Nicheling species. After multiple environmental problems that took place troughout the last decade, the nicheling poulation has strongly declined. Most remaining individuals are inbred, and held in captivity.

A dedicated team of scientists, technicians, zoo-keepers and veterinarians have started the Nicheling Preservation Programme 2020, to combat the slow extinction of such a fascinating species.

After years of research, we are proud to announce that we have been able to clone two Nichelings which are not related to the remaining population.

#001 "Zeri"

#002 "Zarim"

Both individuals will soon be released into the wild, onto an island thoroughly monitored by our team. This habitat is divided into four different perimeters.

image.thumb.png.52b71a525be45b6e1d324f4c7ce06fb9.png

All nichelings receive a three-digit number, as well as a name, to ensure recognition. Once a nicheling reaches adulthood, a drone will take a sample of the individual's hair, in order to decode its genetic code.

Once offspring has been conceived, collaboration with multiple zoos will enable us to broaden the genetic varity of the population, by interbreeding with individuals formerly held in captivity, or perhaps using artifical means of reproduction.

Day 0, Sunny

#001 and #002 arrive savely at the island. After familiarizing themselves with their environment, they locate a berry bush and feed themselves.

Day 1, Sunny

#002 stays behind to pick berries while #001 explores the surrounding terrains. No conflicts have taken place so far.

Day 2, Sunny

#002 follows #001 deeper into the island. Both still remain in P1.

Day 3, Rainy

#002 resumes to picking berries. #001 removes grass around her and moves toward an acorn tree.

Day 4, Sunny

#001 finds another berry bush, leading to #002 leaving his berry bush and returning next to her. #001 appears to have built a nest.

Day 5, Sunny

#001 appears to have left her nest in order to pick more berries. She seems to have given birth during the night, though the fate of the cub is unclear.

Day 6, Sunny

#001 is seen returning often to her nest, apparently nursing. #002 is seen near the nest as well. It is assumed that the offspring is viable.

Day 7, Sunny

The offspring has left the nest, accompanied by #002. It appears to be female. #001 shows signs of another pregnancy, and returns to her nest the following night.

Picture of first offspring obtained

During the early morning hours, a drone has managed to take a picture of #002 and his offspring, #003. She has been dubbed "Niim" by the researchers.

While #002 and #003 clear grass around the tree and pick berries, #001 barely leaves her nest. It is assumed that she is nursing another cub.

Day 9, Sunny

#001 is seen leaving her nest carrying a cub. Its gender and health are unclear.

As the first offspring of #001 and #002 has grown into adulthood, it is now necessary to ensure she receives a partner to which she is not related.

With this form, interested zoo-keepers may apply for one of their nichelings to be included in our programme.

The Nicheling in questions must be of the right gender, an adult, healthy and of different immunity genes than the intended partner. It is imperative that we receive a genetic code as well as a picture of the nicheling, identical to the one we take of our own.

Quick meta post: Everyone is encouraged to submit Nichelings via this form. I'll probably update this in three to four hours again - if there are no applications until then I'll add my own Nicheling.

Day 11, Sunny

#001 has given birth in a new nest, with less protection. She seems to feel saver. #003 is moving away from the others, presumably attempting to find a mate. #004 has been dubbed "Ilael" by our team.

Our drone managed to take a picture of the tribe, shortly before #003 started moving away.

The new cub seems to be healthy, and is well taken care of.

Day 12, Sunny

The new cub is still healthy. #001 seems to be pregnant again, and is preparing herself to give birth. The team assumes that this might be her last pregnancy. #002 is picking berries together with #004. "Niim", #003, is resting next to the stream and seems to plan on crossing it soon.

Day 13, Sunny

#003, "Niim", has succesfully crossed the stream and now resides in P4. #004 has grown into an adult, enabling our drone to record her genetic code.

#001 hasn't left her nest - there might have been complications during the birth. #005 seems to have trouble with her vision and is unusually clumsy. If her genetical analysis later on proves a sight defect she may be removed from the island and instead held in captivity.

#004 "Ilael"

As both Ilael (#004) and Niim (#003) have now grown into fertile adults, we are currently looking for two healthy males which we can add into the tribe.

Day 14, Rainy

The tribe spends the day picking freshly-grown berries. #004 has moved slightly away from her parents, but still remains close to the tribe. As the rain has made the sounds of our drones less noticable, we have been able to confirm that the new cub is male. This is enticing, as we already have a female nicheling which we can involve into the programme.

#001 and her newly born male cub. In the background we can see #002 picking berries.

Another picture has been taken of #003, still residing close to the stream, though now in P4.

Day 15, Sunny

#004 is moving away from the group and now resides closely to P4. It is unknown whether she will be attempting to cross the stream or not. #005 is now dubbed "Laah". #006 seems to have some developemental issues, as his growth is far slower that that of his other siblings. He is now named "Lonta". #003 is still residing near the stream and seems to be gathering berries.

Day 16, Sunny

#006 has now grown in similar capacity to his sisters. He shows similar signs to #005, pointing to visual issues as well. However, #006 will most likely stay, as we already have a promising partner for him.

#005 has grown up and her genetics do indeed show that she is shortsighted. It has been arranged that #005 will be taken to a zoo once, as we are taking great care to not overcrowd the island, and already have two healthy females without visual impairments.

#005 "Laah"

Day 16, Part II

#003 is now moving towards the center of P4. #001 and #002 are starting to show signs of age, getting skinnier and less agile. #006 does not seem to have been impacted by his early growth issues.

Day 17, Sunny

#003 is attempting to hunt. #004 has stopped movement and is currently clearing out grass next to a nest, seemingly preparing for a possible mate. #001 and #002 are showing increased signs of age, and it is estimated they may not live through the night.

Day 18, Sunny

Both #001 "Zeri and #002 "Zarim" have dies of old age. The Programme mourns for them, but is grateful for their contribution to the survival of a species. #005 and #006 seem to be mourning their parents.

#003 manages to kill a rabbil, proving that she has adapted to her surroundings.

The programme is hoping to bring #003 in contact with a male quite soon. We are still searching for a mate for #004!

Thanks! I didn't think of that option since all the other colors are named with numbers for some reason.

Day 19, Part I

#005 has left the island and been taken to a zoo, where she will reproduce with one of the local males. #006 has grown into an adult, giving our drone the opportunity to evaluate his genetic code. Just like his sister #005 he is shortsighted.

#006 "Lonta"

The Nicheling Preservation Programme is very happy to announce that as of today two new nichelings have joined the population. Both #003 "Niim" and #006 "Lonta" have been acquainted with their potential partners! We would like to introduce them to you as well:

#007 "Elrosti", Partner of #003

Day 19, Sunny, Part II

#004 was succesfull in hunting a rabbil. Currently plans are being made to introduce her to a male as well. #006 seems to receive the company of #008 well, the two of them seem to be bonding at a natural pace.

#003 and #007 have taken a fast liking to each other, and seem to be clearing out surrounding grass, perhaps in an attempt to build a nest.
