A flurry of paws, fitting for the bitter air this new island brought.

All jokes aside, this was a new, strange place and they need to conquer it.

Or at least pass through it, either works.

Welcome, my friends, to Roll Your Dice.

“Hi!”

The three had been scouting ahead, and the derp-snouted female had decided to speak up.

The other female looked over at her, tilting her head ever so slightly.

“Hello? Is something troubling you?”

“I don’t know your name! What is it?”

“Oh uh.. I’m Lisumib.”

“What?”

“Lisumib.”

“You’re weird.”

The deformed female then turned to the male of the group.

“What’s your name?”

“Lemino. How about you?”

“Oh, I’m Bibimue! Hi Lemino!”

“Hi..”

“Ooh! What’s that?”

Bibimue promptly turned and ran off in another direction.

The other two gave each other a confused look before following.

“You’re picking them wrong.”

The fish-like female looked over at the striped female.

“Oh.. Uhm.. What’s the right way to do it?”

“Here.”

The striped female reached out and plucked a berry from the bush, then put it with the rest of her stash.

The fishy female copied what she did, but the striped female shook her head with a sigh.

“Wrong again.”

“But I did what you did..?”

“No you didn’t. You did it wrong.”

“I can attest, she did the same as you.”

The striped female whipped around to face the spikey male.

“Who even are you?!”

“Yokro. What are your names?”

“Loji.”

“HAH, you think you’re getting a name out of me? Heck no.”

The unknown female turned and walked off, head held high.

“Brat.”

“Hey.”

The three nichelings who were talking turned to look at the striped female.

“Hi.”

“Shush.”

The striped female looked over at the spotted male.

“What’s your name?”

“Korose..”

“That’s an.. Okay name. Korose, come with me.”

“Uhm.. No thanks.”

“NOW.”

The male flinched at the yell and took a step forward, but the spotted female stepped in front of him.

“Leave him alone! If you want someone to follow you then ask, don’t make them!”

“Move.”

“Not until you leave him alone!”

The striped female hissed and clawed at the female’s face.

“MOVE.”

The spotted female winced, bringing a paw up to the scratch, followed by a hiss.

She looked back at the striped female, narrowing her eyes.

“Oh, the pride in being stubborn. Get out of here before you lose a horn, prissy-paw.”

The striped female huffed and stormed off.

-

“Owanto, are you okay?”

The male brought a paw up to lightly trace the scratch.

“Ow.”

“Oh- sorry!”

He put his paw down, his ears going back against his head.

“Yeah, I’m okay, are you?”

“Yeah… She was scary though.”

“I won’t let her bother you. That prissy-paw isn’t getting my friends!”

“That’s nice and all, but that blood is staining your fur… Does that not bother you?”

“No, not really.”

“Okay… Well let’s go try to find something to help.”

The albino headed off, followed by the other two. They all made sure to avoid the striped female, that is if they saw her on their way.

“Hey, Loji, was it?”

Loji looked over to see Yokro, and proceeded to dip her head a bit.

“Yes sir.”

Yokro chuckled a little and lifted her head with his paw.

“I’m no royalty, no need for formality.”

“Okay..”

“Don’t worry, I won’t hurt you. I could never hurt a female so beautiful.”

“I- Uhm- What?”

Yokro chuckled and leaned in a bit.

“What, do you not get compliments often? That’s harder to believe than a crabbit with wings.”

Loji just slowly descended to embarrassed mumbles.

Needless to say, don’t be surprised if something pops up from these two.

“This place is nice! Hey Lemino, what’re you doing?”

“I’m staying warm because our warmth went way over there!”

“Sorry about that!”

Without warning, Bibimue started screaming at the top of her lungs. Wow, what elegance.

“WHAT’S WRONG?!”

“STOP YOUR INFERNAL NOISE!”

“Okay! And nothing’s wrong silly, I’m just trying to find new friends!”

Lisumib gave a concerned look before calling out a few times.

Once they were done calling, they all started talking. Mostly about the other nichelings, though also some other things.

Loji was about to step into the nest, but something let out a sudden low growl. She flinched and backed up a bit, and a bearyena crept into the nest in front of the group.

The striped female screamed and slapped the bearyena across the face before running away.

“LOJI, WATCH-”

In one swift moment, Loji went up and dug her teeth into the bearyena’s throat.

Yokro watched as the bearyena went limp.

“.. Out?..”

Loji looked over with a small smile.

“They were common back home. Some were larger with red eyes.”

“That’s… Okay. Well good job! I honestly probably wouldn’t have been able to kill it.”

“I know.”

She giggled a little before getting to work on moving the bearyena out of the nest. Yokro joined in, pushing it over into the grass.

Yokro carved out the meat as Loji took a nap.

One of the other groups had overheard screaming and came to check out the source. When they found their tribemates, there was a few facepalms or sighs.

“Bibi, you’re being too loud.”

“Did you just call her baby?”

“NO! Her name is Bibimue- It’s just a nickname, okay?”

“Whatever you say.”

There were a few snickers, and Lisumib shrunk back into a huddled sitting position.

“We’ve been trying to get her to stop screaming for the past hour. She doesn’t listen to a word we say.”

“That’s tough, bud.”

“Please don’t be rude to your tribemates.”

“I’m not being rude, I’m just being honest.”

“If you’re being honest, then how do you feel about children?”

The screams stopped once Bibimue got tired.

“Is she done..?”

Lemino jumped a bit and turned to face a child.

“Erm, yeah, she’s done. For now at least. Is something wrong?”

“I lost ma… Do you know where she is?”

“No, I don’t. Lisumib might know, she’s the gal over on the other stump. You should talk to her instead.”

“Okay..”

And so the child started walking over to the other stump.

“He’s beautiful..”

“Yeah… What are you going to name him?”

“Name? Oh. Uh… Yimime.”

“That’s a neat name… Hey, I’m going to go out checking for the others tomorrow, alright?”

“Okay!”

She wrapped her tail around the cub, but moved into another nest. She slowly drifted off to sleep.

“Lolan.”

“Lolan?”

“That’s her name. She’s Lolan.”

“It fits her. Is she going to be an only child?”

“Yes. Just one.”

“Alright. Whatever makes you happy.”

He wrapped around the both of them, though tried to stay out of the nest while doing so to make sure they both had room.

“Hi.”

“Hm?”

The albino turned to look at Lemino.

“Oh, hello there!”

“What’s your name?”

“I’m Yayuta. You can call me whatever you’d like though, don’t let my name be a burden.”

“It’s a nice name, it’s not a burden. Do you want to sit in the spring? I can move over.”

“Sure! As long as you’re okay with it though.”

“Of course.”

Lemino left the spring, shivering a little when the bitter air touched him. He then sat and watched Yayuta climb into the spring.

Pretty..

In the morning, Loji woke up alone with two children. She looked around, then moved out of the nest and pulled her children along with her. She curled her tail around them and looked around again, lowering her head as she looked up at a bluebird.

Where’d he go?

She stared at the bird for a while before looking back down at her children. Oh right, she still needs to name her daughter.

“Lilimio.”

She then looked down at the domingo below them.

“And Henry.”

She was already scared enough about the looming bluebird, but a distant growl set her on edge. She brought the children even closer to herself.

“You’re really pretty.”

“Oh uh- Thanks. You’re pretty handsome yourself.”

“Really?”

“Yeah! And you’re nice. Really nice. You’re different from the boys back home.”

“The boys back home?”

“Yeah… They don’t really talk to us unless they’re told by the leader that they need to.”

Lemino gave a small nod, then placed his head on the edge of the spring.

Yayuta giggled and tilted her head.

“What are you doing?”

“Admiring the view.”

“You’re strange. I like it.”

Lemino smiled and brought a paw up. He splashed a little bit of water at her, his smile turning to a smirk.

Yayuta giggled while splashing him back.

In the morning, Loji lifted her head to be staring directly at a bearyena. She quickly rushed her children behind her and kept an eye on the bearyena. She was too afraid to move.

What was she supposed to do?

If she went to tackle it then the bluebird would come swoop up Lilimio. She couldn’t let that happen. Though she also doesn’t want her children being attacked by a bearyena.

Where was Yokro when she needed him?

“What’s his name?”

“Yeti. His name is Yeti.”

“Yeti.. It kind of fits.”

“Yeti’s cute! And he’s so small! How is he so small?”

“He’s a cub, he’s supposed to be small.”

She nudged Yeti closer to Lemino before settling in another nest.

“Another? Isn’t one child enough for you?”

“Two is a good number… They can keep each other entertained.”

“But that’s your job as a parent. You can’t just make the child do it.”

“I’m not relying on the child, I just think they’d benefit from having someone around their age to play with.”

“Whatever. Don’t complain when one of them disappears.”

And with that, Owanto walked away.

Yokro looked up in the morning to see a bearyena hovering over him. He tried to get up, but fell to the ground with a pained yelp. He looked down to see a bite in his side, and then he looked back up at the bearyena.

How did he sleep through that?

Why was the bearyena going after him?

Why does he hear footsteps?

He turned just in time to duck as a strange nicheling jumped at the bearyena. The nicheling clawed open the bearyena’s neck and stood on its head until it went limp. He then hopped off and went back up next to the stump, licking some blood off his paws.

Yokro stared at him in silence for a few moments before speaking up.

“Who are you?”

“I’m your worst nightmare, yet your best daydream.”

“What?”

“The unexpected source amongst good aromas.”

“You aren’t making sense.”

“I’m someone you’ve been waiting to meet since day one. Foe or friend, let’s decide.”

“Uhm… No thanks, I’m good.”

“Seems like you’ve taken the hard way. Oh, how I love the hard way.”

The strange nicheling bared his teeth and shoved Yokro backwards.

“Oh, how you fall so easily. Poor kitten, your balance must be so off-key! Not to worry, I have a friend who can fix you right up! All you have to do is follow me.”

“What’s going to happen if I follow you?”

“You’ll meet my friend, silly! Oh he’s a hoot, you’ll love him! Oh! I nearly forgot my name! Might as well tell you before you follow a stranger into the unknown. I’m Hickory.”

“Hickory-Dickory-Dock?”

“Oh those are my brother’s names.”

Hickory turned and ran to the edge of the grass, looking back at Yokro.

“You’ll regret not coming!”

And with that, Hickory ran off.

Yokro tried to maintain his wild thoughts as he bolted after the stranger.

Why was he following them? Why did following a stranger seem so.. Right?

Why does this stranger feel so safe?

As soon as the bearyena had moved away, Loji picked up her children and ran. She ran until she found the others, then set them down and fell over. She was out of breath, but pulled her children in and wrapped around them. She passed out while holding them.

“Eulgh… Boring.”

The striped female looked down at the bundle between her face with a disgusted look.

She glanced up at the bluebird circling about the tribe, and pushed the cub out into the open before walking away.

“Hey, hey Lisu.”

“Yes Bibi?”

“Why does everybody else have mates?”

“Because they love each other.”

“But why are they all girl and boy?”

“Well.. People tend to usually be attracted to the opposite gender.”

“But what if I like girls?”

“That’s not a bad thing! I like girls too. That’s probably why you haven’t seen me sticking around any of the boys.”

“If you like girls, do you like me?”

Lisumib stared down at Bibimue for a few moments before nodding.

“Yes, though I’m not really mate material.”

“I think you are!”

Bibimue smiled up at Lisumib, who looked down at her paws.

“Yes you are! C’mere!”

Bibimue practically tackled Lisumib to give her a big hug.

“I didn’t know you had a mate..”

“Hm? Oh, yeah! I have a mate!”

“Okay.. Then who is he?”

“He?”

“You said you had a mate.”

“I do! She’s on the stump.”

“Lisumib?..”

“Yup! She’s great.”

Yayuta gave a bit of a disgusted look, then stared back down at the child.

“Doesn’t he have a father?”

“Nope!”

“That’s.. Disgusting. A child should have a mother and a father, not two mothers. Whatever your tribe taught you is utter idiocy.”

Yayuta brought her own child closer to her, turning to walk away. She looked over her shoulder to say one last thing before leaving.

“Get rid of that.. Thing.”

And off she goes.

Bibimue sat there in confusion, staring at where Yayuta had gone. After she realized she actually left, she looked down at the cub between her paws.

“Don’t worry, I’m never getting rid of you, Bisib.”

“Hey, dad.”

“Hm?”

Kokose turned to look down at the fully grown nicheling sitting in the hotspring beside him.

“Where’s mom?”

“I don’t know.”

“Why hasn’t she come back yet? I’ve been waiting, like, forever!”

“She’s just getting some rabbils… Don’t worry about her. Here, pick some flowers.”

“Okay.”

Lolan frowned and turned to pick some flowers. She split them half and half between the two of them.

Kokose stared off into the distance, doing his best to ignore the fact that he was getting choked up.

Raising a child alone wasn’t something he thought he’d end up doing, but it seems as though that is what happened.

What is he supposed to do when he sees Owanto again? Act like nothing’s wrong?

No, that’s not right. He can’t let Lolan get hurt.

He can’t go back to her, even if he wanted to.
