As growls and harsh waves crashing against the shore echoed the island, nine nichelings could be found along crumbling rocks, ready to explore this new, deadly land.

Welcome, my friends, to the World Of Altoni Havea

The two gilled nichelings had immediately made their way into the waves, pushing against the violent crashes of water to get to some shells.

The smaller nicheling was able to get below the waves first, collecting some shells before popping her head back up.

“Are you having any luck?”

“Nope, just getting pinched by a crabbit.” The heavier-bodied nicheling raised her paw, shaking it a bit to make the crabbit clinging to her paw more obvious.

“Do you need help getting that off?” The small nicheling tilted her head as she cracked some shells open with her tail.

The red female shook her head. “Nope. He’s chill.”

“Alright. Well if you change your mind, just call for me! The name’s Spearmint!”

“Got it. I’m Ruby.”

The smaller nicheling turned and descended back into the waters on her mission to obtain more shells.

Four of the nichelings swarmed the first bushes that they spotted, picking from the bushes while striking up some conversation.

“So.. What are your guys’s names?” The toxic bodied nicheling spoke, lifting her head up in an attempt to seem more confident.

“I’m Midas.” The poison fanged male smiled, picking some thorns off of a toxic berry.

“Acorn.” The sticky-tongued female lifted her head up, looking around at the others. “And who is that one?” She motioned a paw towards the black and white male.

The male shied away a bit, lowering her head and tucking his tail between his legs. “I’m Oreo..” He had spoken in a low whisper as to avoid as much attention as possible.

“You all have nice names! I’m Diamond!” The female smiled cheerfully before plucking a poison berry and tossing it into her mouth.

The group continued to pick berries together, though Oreo was paying more attention to where the other groups were.

“Hey Hyena, have you seen any rabbils?”

“For the last time, no. I would have told you if I did.”

The two bearyena-snouted friends had been scouting ahead, searching for food along the way. Hyena, the red-brown female, has had just about enough of the orange male.

“Why are all the rabbils hiding? I only want to eat them, why are they so scared?”

Hyena was silent for a moment before stopping and turning to look at the male.

“Seam.. You’re an idiot.”

Later, Acorn pulled Oreo aside to speak.

“Hey, are you alright?” The female tilted her head, a bit of a concerned look on her face.

“Yeah… Yeah, I’m okay, okay.” He backed up a bit as he spoke, bringing a paw up to scratch at the back of his ear.

“Are you sure?” Acorn reached forward and gently pushed his paw down.

“Very, very. Very okay.”

“Alright… Well if anything goes wrong, you can come to me. Alright?”

“Yes, yes. Thank, thank you.”

The next morning, Acorn awoke to the sound of growling above her. She blinked her eyes tiredly and looked up, just in time to move away from an incoming attack.

She looked back up at her attacker to see an abnormally huge bearyena with dark red eyes.

Acorn was frozen in fear, and all she could do was scream.

The screaming had awoken the others, and Seam slammed his horns into the bearyena’s side to get its attention. The bearyena turned and was met with a claw to the face.

The bearyena had barely flinched from the attack, and let out a low growl. It readied to swipe its claw at Seam, but Oreo ran into the bearyena’s side.

“Hey, hey! Leave, leave them alone, alone!”

The bearyena swung its claw and knocked Oreo clean off his paws, though Oreo got right back up and growled at the bearyena.

Every bone in his body wanted to run, but he fought the urge long enough for Seam to get a lethal hit in.

The next morning, the tribe awoke to more growling. Oreo lifted his head, turning to see a bearyena staring him down. He groaned, then slammed his antlers into its side.

Seam soon ran up, but instead of attacking, Seam just growled at the bearyena.

The bearyena clawed at Seam’s face, then turned to swipe at Oreo. Midas quickly ran up and bit into the bearyena’s paw, sending poison through its body.

The bearyena spun around, stumbling over its own paws and falling over. Oreo took the opportunity to claw at the bearyena’s throat, watching it go limp.

“Twice?!”

“Seems like it.”

“Two, two bearyenas appear out of nowhere, nowhere and attack us?”

“Yup. Sounds about right.”

“Is there a baby nearby?”

“Hey, what’s your name?” Midas stared at the pink female, who had been cracking open coconuts.

The female looked up at him, giving a smile. “Clarity.”

“That’s a nice name. Do you need help cracking the coconuts open?”

“No, I’m good.” She looked back down at the coconuts, cracking one open in her paws.

“You sure?” He scooted slightly closer, picking up a coconut.

Clarity kept a smile, despite being a bit uncomfortable. “I’m okay working alone.”

“Being alone is boring, why not spend some time with others? Like me! I’m someone you’d like to hang out with.”

“I’d rather be alone, thank you..” She stood up, taking some coconuts with her as she walked away.

“Hey..”

“Hi, hi?”

“Hush, not too loud.”

Oreo looked around in confusion, perking his ears up as well in attempt to figure out what was happening.

“Where are you?”

“I’m right here, silly!”

“Where’s, where’s here?”

“Here is you, you, silly!”

Oreo looked down at his paws, trying to register what was said.

“Who are, are you?”

“I’m you! Except not you. A better you!”

“Better, better me?”

“Yes! Yes! Better you!”

Oreo looked around, making sure the other nichelings hadn’t been alerted. He then shushed himself and walked away.

“Hi.”

Spearmint nearly left her body with how hard she jumped. She quickly looked over to see a young nicheling with a beak.

“Oh, hello there little one. Where did you come from?” She tilted her head, eying the child up and down to check for injuries and such.

“I came from home. Mom said to go away.” The cub scratched at their beak a bit before letting out a small chirp. “I’ve been away for a long time! I don’t know where mom is.”

“Do you need help getting back?” Spearmint had a hint of concern in her voice, bringing a paw up to check the cub’s beak.

“Nope! Mom will just say to go away again. Then I’ll be away longer!” The cub pecked at her paw, not knowing what else she’d have wanted.

Spearmint quickly yanked her paw back, staring at the small dot of blood before looking back at the cub again. “Right.. Well what’s your name, little one?”

“Pigeon! Mom calls me Robin though. She mixes me up with my sister.”

“That’s nice. Why don’t you stay with me for a while? Just so your mom knows you’re safe.”

“Okay!” The cub quickly rushed up and hid under Spearmint’s front half, peeking out from between her paws and smiling up at her. “Oh, and what’s your name?”

“Spearmint. You may call me whatever you want though.”

“Okay! I’ll call you Minty.”

Diamond turned to see a melanistic wanderer standing by the bushes behind her. She tapped her tail against the ground a few times before tilting her head.

“Hello? Who are you?”

“I’m Bernard.” The male yanked a berry off the toxic bush with his fangs, crushing it in his mouth almost immediately.

“That’s an.. Interesting name. Are you just here for berries?”

The male glanced at the berries, then smiled at her. “That, and a mate. Though I believe I’ve already found one.” He gave a small wink before tearing off another berry.

“A mate? Is it someone in my tribe or another wanderer?” She tilted her head again, even more confused by the wink.

“Oh dearie, it’s you. Just go along with it, help pay your part to your tribe.”

“Okay..”

“Oreo, look. Chocomint has your spots.” The female had been curled around a cub, the cub’s bright pelt standing out against its surroundings.

Oreo lifted his head and looked over at the cub, bringing his face up to the side of the nest to meet noses with the small creature. Oreo sniffed at the little one, then smiled. “She’s perfect.”

Oreo then looked down at the rabbil between his paws. He carefully lifted it up and set it next to the cub. The cub stared blankly at it before poking it with her nose.

The bunnil sniffed at the cub, but was frightened when the cub wrapped around it.

“And now she has a little friend.” Oreo laid down, shifting to have his head on the side of the nest. Acorn laid down as well, resting her head next to his. She kept her tail curled around the cub, and Oreo kept an eye on the bluebird above.

The next morning, Acorn was curled around another cub. The bunnil from before had ran off, and Chocomint was playing in some of the grasses.

“Peprika.. She has your spots as well.”

Oreo lightly tapped one of his antlers against one of Peprika’s antlers, then smiled and brought some freshly picked berries up to the cub. As the cub ate, he went to play with Chocomint in the grass.

Acorn curled up around the cub and went to sleep.

The next morning, Acorn was looking down at yet another cub. This time Oreo had been off playing with Chocomint in the grasses, so Acorn was alone with Paprika and Sprinkle.

“Why does she have fangs if you two don’t have any?” Paprika stared at the cub, bringing a paw forward to poke their snout.

“I don’t know hun, but that doesn’t mean she’s not still ours.” Acorn curled her tail around the cub, licking the top of its head a bit. “Sprinkle’s no different from you and me. She can just do some things we can’t.”

“She looks weird. Why can’t she look like you or dad?”

“That’s not how the world works. And she isn’t weird, she’s one of us.”

“Okay!” Paprika pretended to understand, then turned and ran off to where Oreo and Chocomint were playing.

Acorn let out a sigh and started cleaning the cub.

Later in the day, when the little ones were tired out, Oreo had begun talking to himself.

Chocomint lifted her head, listening for a few minutes before speaking up. “Dad, who are you talking to?”

Oreo’s eyes widened and he quickly turned to look at her. “Nobody. Just go back to sleep, alright? I’m watching out for the bearyenas.” He brought a paw up and patted her head gently before turning back around to watch out.

“Okay. Please let nobody go to sleep too then.” She laid her head back down and closed her eyes, slowly drifting back off to sleep.

“Why hello there.”

Clarity turned to look down at Bernard. “Hello. Who are you?”

Bernard smiled up at her, narrowing his eyes ever so slightly. “I’m the man of your dreams.”

“Well I don’t dream of men, but thanks for trying.” She gave a sweet smile and went back to picking at the grass.

“Oh, do you not know? You don’t have a say in what you dream of. Your word means nothing.”

The next day, two more cubs awoke. Diamond sheltered her cub from the rain, watching a bluebird struggle overhead.

Raisin took one quick look at her cub, then pushed them out of the nest and ran. Diamond was about to call after her, but Clarity shushed her and stepped into the nest, keeping the abandoned cub close to shield her from rain.

“What about her mom?” Diamond peered over Clarity’s shoulder. “Everyone will know she’s not yours.”

“She will be mine, blood or not. She deserves a mother who cares.” Clarity kept the cub close as she drifted off to sleep.
