for the base color i just use the fill tool, if the character is a light color/albino i put pink around their eyes, nose, and paws then use a blur tool on it and lower the opacity, i also like to color the outlines something other than just black (for example in my melon art the lineart is purple) to make it look nice

as for shading i tend to use purple, blue, or red (depends on the character's color) and set the layer to multiply mode then shade it and lower the opacity until it looks right
