Intelligence?

Palaeolithic Raccoon

Post

Any way to make intelligence stats a thing?  Granted, it's up to us to do most of the evading and problem solving, and most people can't see what good it'd do for something without Nimble Fingers (because of the conceit that the only reason to have intelligence is for it to lead to the technological path of survival .. but all specialists wonder why everyone just doesn't go their way), but it's the one thing seriously lacking in animal breeding/handling games; for some reason, I hear even JP:Evolution lacks it, where it should really be a thing.

But I see Nichlings with Nimble Fingers walking around on two legs all the time, but they never think of picking up a stick or a rock when a pack of Bearyenas show up, no matter how bad they infest the island.  And yes, chimps do it; monkeys are known to throw crap in captivity only because the researchers and zookeepers tend not to give them anything more effective to throw; and I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to one day hear a Torontonian claiming to have been stabbed in the foot or shin by an irritated  raccoon with something sharp s/he found.  (Check this out:  https://g.redditmedia.com/aPFdEHXSrBjBCUbP7dfiadtGhFcqg9TSvzLtJCl1Y58.gif?fm=mp4&mp4-fragmented=false&s=27d251bff45e73e5aec29b11496eb202)

I guess in a way, I kind of miss the idea of a computer "toy" as opposed to a computer "game".  SimEarth was more of a toy than a game, but still terribly engaging, and it's still one of my favourite "games" (toys) of all time, as well as a pretty good simulator for the time (and for running on a 286).

and how do you suppose it could work in Niche? if there were an "intelligence" gene, how would it work in game?

as you said, the choices are made by the player. so every Nicheling has the intelligence of the player controlling it

if you want them to throw things, maybe there could be a throwing paw or whatever but since they can't act on their own or let alone think for themselves, how would intelligence affect anything? you can't just throw around what you would like to see in a game like this without giving a solution as to how it could work in that specific game

and what do you mean with "computer toy" games are games. they are for having fun, as are toys. there is little difference between a game and a toy, the only one that comes to mind is that a game has rules and a toy is the object you play (games) with

and the goal of Niche is not to form a civilisation, it is to find an evolutionary niche. both is about evolution but there end the similarities. if you want a game like simearth you are at the wrong adress because the game has a different intention.

1. you still didn't answer how it could work in Niche. I know inteligence is an important factor for animals and evolution, but how does it fit into the game concept? think about game mechanics and not just vague ideas of how things should work

2. I am quite sure fishy meant in Niche, as in the game, it is just about the body parts and not evolution in general

for the simulation aspect, look here

As for the guy who says body parts are all that matters, well, that shows utter ignorance of modern studies of wildlife, both urban and in the wild.  Intelligence is being selected for HARD in the modern world, especially amongst those critters most in contact with humans, or affected by human activity.  I saw someone ask for a city biome, and that's exactly where intelligence comes in.  Now imagine an urban wildlife simulator with an intelligence mechanic ...

hey dude, my favorite bird is the crow, because of their high intelligence they use to identify threats, figure out ways to get new food sorces like making cars run over nuts to smash them, dropping rocks in water to displace it and using twigs and stems to extract food(WHICH BY THE WAY COMES IN HANDY IN URBAN ENVIRONMENTS), they even make it hooked to help them out with that, F-you do you think I have zero understanding of biology, evolution or etc. I should have specified first probably that I meant in niche(because duh), you should have probably thought of the GAME when you read my section

OK, let me explain.

First of all, SimEarth wasn't like SimLife was, or is.  SimLife was more of a game, whereas SimEarth was actually a simulation - set the initial conditions, and see what happens.  Yes, there were ways to interfere with the way things were going, but that wasn't the main point of it, as in the case of a game.  That's why even the creators described it as a computer "toy" rather than a "video game".

But yes, I guess what I would be asking for, similar to those wanting a more "sandboxy" sandbox mode, is maybe a simulator mode.

It would be a nice additional feature, I think.  As long as you're not an unwitting devotee of the philosophy of Descartes and think your fellow creatures are nothing but automatons. Hhis math was good, but his philosophy was bloody horrible.)
