grey screen crash on launch

Hey, I'm new here. I just bought Nimbatus this morning as it went into early access release on steam. I just wanted to post a bug that I haven't been able to find much help on so far. I've seen resolutions for windows, but I'm on Linux.

Ubuntu 18.04.1 64 bit
8 gigs ram
AMD Athlon 860k quad core processor
GeForce GTX 750 Ti with 2 gigs video ram
1TB free disk space
I'm also running Nvidia drivers version 396

Thank you in advanced for any help :)

Hey Thanks for reporting :)

You can try to start the game in windowed mode, maybe this will fix your issues.

Please locate this folder:
~/.config/unity3d/Nimbatus/Nimbatus/

There should be a settings.ini inside this folder, open it and change the values to this.

UseFullScreen = 0
ScreenWidth = 1920
ScreenHeight = 1080

Then restart the game and see if it works.

We are currently working on a fix right now.

Thank you, that did seem to fix things! I noticed the Stray Fawn logo was garbled looking, but the game seems to be working now.

~edit~ I also noticed that if I launch the game that way, then go into video options and select full screen, the game continues to work after this point. I even closed the game and relaunched in full screen mode, and it continued to work. It must have something to do with that first time launching the game?

Ok then something might not work yet. I'll analyze it more.

You can try this to solve the problem:
Locate ~/.config/unity3d/Nimbatus/Nimbatus/ and edit the playerprefs.
Replace the 1 with  a 0 at
<pref name="Screenmanager Resolution Use Native" type="int">1</pref>

 So it might look like this:

<unity_prefs version_major="1" version_minor="1">
        <pref name="Screenmanager Fullscreen mode" type="int">0</pref>
        <pref name="Screenmanager Resolution Height" type="int">1080</pref>
        <pref name="Screenmanager Resolution Use Native" type="int">0</pref>
        <pref name="Screenmanager Resolution Width" type="int">1920</pref>
        <pref name="Sound" type="float">0.362963</pref>
        <pref name="UnitySelectMonitor" type="int">0</pref>
        <pref name="unity.cloud_userid" type="string">MjFlYjcxYWYxMGRhZTQ3MTFiMzYyZmNiMDg3NTBkZjU=</pref>
        <pref name="unity.player_sessionid" type="string">NTEzMzI4MjQzMTAzODg3NjY3OA==</pref>
</unity_prefs>

Then restart the game again.

So, for that fix, do I need to join the BETA first?

Because I just downloaded the linux game, and all I see is a grey screen with two buttons.

I udpated the game again on Steam, it includes another change to the linux startup configuration.
It works fine here. Can you please update to the newest version and try to start the game again?

Let me now if the error is still happening :)

Cheers,
Micha

I just purchased the game today and it is not working for me with the latest update.

When opening gets to the StrayFawnStudio logo and then crashes.

In the directory listed above I only see the file "prefs" I do not see "Settings.ini" or "playerprefs"

The contents are as follow:

<unity_prefs version_major="1" version_minor="1">
	<pref name="Screenmanager Fullscreen mode" type="int">3</pref>
	<pref name="Screenmanager Resolution Height" type="int">768</pref>
	<pref name="Screenmanager Resolution Use Native" type="int">0</pref>
	<pref name="Screenmanager Resolution Width" type="int">1024</pref>
	<pref name="UnitySelectMonitor" type="int">-1</pref>
	<pref name="unity.cloud_userid" type="string">MGFhZDVjMzE2ZDdiMzRiYmE4NjE3NjE3NDRlZDIyZDA=</pref>
	<pref name="unity.player_sessionid" type="string">NzgxOTI5MzQwNjU1MzczNDUwMw==</pref>
</unity_prefs>

Tried re-installing game, verifying integrity, restarting PC, deleting the ~/.config/unity3d/Nimbatus folder, and tried editing resolution values for height/width as mentioned in earlier posts all with no success.

Also tried editing resolution values for height/width as mentioned in earlier posts

I am on:
Ubuntu 18.04.1 64 bit w/ v4.18.11 kernel
16 Gigs RAM
AMD Ryzen 7
GeForce GTX 660 Ti
Running Nvidia drivers version 396

Can you please check the Settings.ini after starting the game.

It should look like this:

UseFullScreen = 0
ScreenWidth = 1024
ScreenHeight = 768

If it has UseFullScreen= 1 ,  please change it to 0 and see it it works.
If it starts, go into the options and set the resolution / fullscreen to the settings you like to play with.

Works in full-screen too, now!

Thanks for fixing.

FYI: I do sometimes see a warning that the game is not responding after launch, and have to choose "Wait" after which the game quickly starts.

So my guess is that the Steam Launcher thinks the game is too slow to launch?

I do not see Settings.ini show up. Does not seem to create when opening the game. Any way of creating it manually?

The settings.ini is created when the game manages to start successfully. So in this case it crashes before that happens. Is there an output_log.txt in the folder?

The logfile could also be at

~/.config/unity3d/Nimbatus/Nimbatus/Player.log

If you find it, please upload it here so I can analyze your crash.

 Attached is the log file. Seems as it is never able to generate it then as the game crashes prior to that.

Thanks for all your help thus far!

Hmm strange problem. Could not reproduce it here anymore with the newest build.

Another thing you could try is to force the game into windowed mode.
To do that add the following string to the launch options in Steam:
(Rightclick on the game in the library -> properties -> Set launch options)

-screen-fullscreen 0 -screen-height 1080 -screen-width 1920
