I've seen it multiple times in let's-plays, even recent ones. I've experienced it first hand, as I'm sure all of you have, painfully enough. Your day is just starting, and you move to select something toward the top of the screen; or maybe you still have another game's controls on your mind and you automatically bump the spacebar. Now all your nechelings are a day older and your down another day's worth of food.

I think there ought to be a message that pops up when you try to advance when you have unspent actions. something like: "Some of your nechelings have actions. Are you sure you want to end the day?" This could save a lot of pain and let us accident-prone folk relax.
