Bearyena Research

I created a save consisting of impossible-to-kill nichelings, to help me study the behavior of Bearyenas (which nichelings theyll attack before others based off of looks.) Here are some pictures i took:

Are there things youve noticed about Bearyenas that could help with my research? Noticed anything about other predators? Please comment, and ill update my research!

Oh YES! A partner in science! According to my research after watching various gameplays, I have come to the conclusion that bearyenas have a tendency to lock on to specific nichelings, only rarely switching targets unless they find a bunny. As a side note, I noticed that balance bears seem to enter hybernation once they are covered by snow, as they wont even budge. Another thing is that smelling apes seem to prefer smelly fruit over meat.

thank you! I didnt know about the hibernation thing, and its good to know about the locking thing. Ill do some tests on these things to see if i can use them in actual saves to avoid predators.

I always notice that bearyena's like to hunt my spiky bodied Nichelings and usually nothing can distract them from it or they completly ignore me and run away from my Nichelings...

One time there was a big horde of bearyenas on Deadly hills and it consisted of friendly bearyenas (not friendly for long), normal bearyenas, and big boy scary-face bearyenas.

Strangely enough, the father (father? mom?) didn’t give two hecks and didn’t attack me lol

The first killer bearyena I met didn’t care about me and didn’t attack, but the ones you see in the last two screenshots (they’re the same guy) did

Perhaps killer bearyenas only attack if you attack them or smaller bearyenas?

There’s a whole lotta of wanderers on the Killer Island... Perhaps more bearyenas = higher wanderer spawn rate?

Or more wanderers= higher bearyena spawn rate? Its free food after all.

By the way, how are killer bearyenas born? are they a subpecies, or possibly a genetic mutation? Personally, I think it cant be a subspecies, because there are no babies, and they live alongside normal bearyenas. A genetic mutation may be the case, but then there could be killer bearyenas on other islands. I think its a behavioral pressure. As you can see, on other islands bearyenas are normally solitary, but here, there are tons of prey, so bearyenas are more common and they hunt in packs. Because of this, in order to control the pack, the strongest bearyena excretes hormones that cause its fur to darken, and it grows considerably in size and aggression. This helps it control the pack and keeps the ecosystem in balance.

Kinda like how male lions with darker manes usually are head of the pride? Or maybe it’s an endemic thing?

@thivid08I believe that might be so, too. They do have weaker senses, bad mutations for hunting, but need to fight off other bearyenas, maybe.

At least I can't think of another reason to go strenght over hunting ability. It's kind of weird, but the ratio of normal to killer bearyenas might be ideal to the enviroment, much like gender ratios.

Something still seems odd. I don't know what.

I think the tribe was killed off leaving wanderers fleeing. The 'bad' genes is the reason the tribe died (if they have derp snout then thats why they survived while the rest died)

I know nobody has posted to this topic in years, but has anyone else noticed that if you don't kill a bearyena off quickly that more tend to spawn?

I was told by Seri!PixelBiologist that killer bearyena can summon other bearyena, but I have also noticed this tendency with normal bearyena as well.
