jaxpsylla
I created a save consisting of impossible-to-kill nichelings, to help me study the behavior of Bearyenas (which nichelings theyll attack before others based off of looks.) Here are some pictures i took: Are there things youve noticed about Bearyenas that could help with my research? Noticed anything about other predators? Please comment, and ill update my research!
thivid08
Oh YES! A partner in science! According to my research after watching various gameplays, I have come to the conclusion that bearyenas have a tendency to lock on to specific nichelings, only rarely switching targets unless they find a bunny. As a side note, I noticed that balance bears seem to enter hybernation once they are covered by snow, as they wont even budge. Another thing is that smelling apes seem to prefer smelly fruit over meat.

Ill do some tests on these things to see if i can use them in actual saves to avoid predators.
Goggles-kun
There’s a whole lotta of wanderers on the Killer Island... Perhaps more bearyenas = higher wanderer spawn rate?
bostonlobstah
I bet they were in the tribe but then released.. this is rlly interesting. I may have to try it out (IF the console would actually cooperate and DOUBLE IF I can even survive Deadly Hills)
Jojo
I always notice that bearyena's like to hunt my spiky bodied Nichelings and usually nothing can distract them from it or they completly ignore me and run away from my Nichelings...

Spacestar TheThundersuncat
Normal beaeyenas might fight, too, but I am not sure. They sometimes tilt their heads towards each other while on adjacent tiles and one dies. Old age, murder? No idea.
Goggles-kun
One time there was a big horde of bearyenas on Deadly hills and it consisted of friendly bearyenas (not friendly for long), normal bearyenas, and big boy scary-face bearyenas. Strangely enough, the father (father? mom?) didn’t give two hecks and didn’t attack me lol The first killer bearyena I met didn’t care about me and didn’t attack, but the ones you see in the last two screenshots (they’re the same guy) did

thivid08
By the way, how are killer bearyenas born? are they a subpecies, or possibly a genetic mutation? Personally, I think it cant be a subspecies, because there are no babies, and they live alongside normal bearyenas. A genetic mutation may be the case, but then there could be killer bearyenas on other islands. I think its a behavioral pressure. As you can see, on other islands bearyenas are normally solitary, but here, there are tons of prey, so bearyenas are more common and they hunt in packs. Because of this, in order to control the pack, the strongest bearyena excretes hormones that cause its fur to darken, and it grows considerably in size and aggression. This helps it control the pack and keeps the ecosystem in balance.

Or maybe it’s an endemic thing?

At least I can't think of another reason to go strenght over hunting ability. It's kind of weird, but the ratio of normal to killer bearyenas might be ideal to the enviroment, much like gender ratios. Something still seems odd. I don't know what.

The 'bad' genes is the reason the tribe died (if they have derp snout then thats why they survived while the rest died)
PriestessKikyo1
I know nobody has posted to this topic in years, but has anyone else noticed that if you don't kill a bearyena off quickly that more tend to spawn? I was told by Seri!PixelBiologist that killer bearyena can summon other bearyena, but I have also noticed this tendency with normal bearyena as well.
