Sumo overhaul

Instead of the current sumo tournament system, replace it with an honor or trophy-based system like many other asynchronous games use.

you choose your drone, and then get matched against someone with  similar ranking rather than playing 10 rounds at once. If you win, you get some trophies/honor, if you lose, then you lose some.

If you have multiple sumo drones, then you would get to choose your defending sumo drone instead of it getting chosen automatically.

There would be a casual mode and a competitive mode. The casual mode would not affect ranking, and could be entered as many times daily as you want, while the competitive (ranked) mode, would have some way to limit the amount of entries that a person has (probably X entries per day), so that you need to have the best drone to win, not play the most games.

There would be multiple “leagues”: Top 10 players, top 10% of players, all players with at least X trophies, all players with between X and Y trophies, all players with between Y and Z trophies, all players with less that Z trophies, etc.

In the top 10 player league, each player would be constantly redesigning thier drone to best counter the other players. In casual, you would not be matched against another top 10 player as to prevent people from perfecting thier design against the other top 10 in casual and then competing in competitive. The redesigning would have to happen in the competitive mode.

there would also be “seasons.” At the end of each season, players would get some sort of reward (probably resources, maybe a season-specific printable certificate for top 10 (maybe hold a community contest to design the certificate for each season so that every season has a unique certificate), a steam achievement, some sort of in-game medal, etc. Mainly just some way to prove that you actually won your bragging rights and aren’t just making them up), and then thier trophy count would be reset to the minimum requirement for thier current league. A new season would  happen roughly every month.

Edit: there would also be a similar feature implemented for other multiplayer game mode in the future (i.e. racing).
