New Genes 025: Kingfisher (A new method of fishing)

Biogamer

Post

The kingfisher is one of my favourite birds, and can you blame me. They're fast, colourful and have an amazing yet simple way to get fish, just dive in. So what if there was a new effect and the kingfisher could start it off, mid-air diving (couldn't really think of another name 😅). The diving effect would work with a nicheling reach higher ground (e.g. trees) and they dive down, this can work as a way to attack prey (new gene idea will explain this) or for this case fishing. The higher the mid-air diving effect the more effective it would be, meaning for this case the fishing could be boosted (basically increasing fishing and strength stat). The fishing beak (looks like the image below) would be unlocked by diving 30 times and fishing 50 times. The effects would be +1 smelling, +2 fishing and +1 mid-air diving(need a strong beak to catch prey).

Next the Alcedinidae body (just means kingfisher body but fancier) would be unlocked by diving 50 times and fishing 50 times. This body would look like a small bird body (new niche sizes maybe) and would have the effects of +1 speed, +1 stealth (prey doesn't recognise them), +2 flight, +2 mid-air diving and maybe +1 swimming (Don't know, I just think if it does it would make the gene op).

Hope this was interesting, Sincerely Biogamer

The beaks cool but a bit op, it wouldn't need strength as well as fishing and diving. I'd personally prefer to see it added with just smelling and fishing though, the diving is basically just swooping but using the beak instead of feet. There's no reason diving at something headfirst should deal extra damage and swooping down and grabbing something with talons shouldn't. Not to taken with the body either, it sort of seems like youve just slapped some random abilities on it. A kingfishers body isn't particularly specialised for anything

Also, Alcedinidae isn't a fancy name for a kingfisher, but rather the scientific family that kingfishers belong to. If you are describing something as either belonging to or being a typical trait of a taxonomic family then it would lose the -ae ending e.g. a kingfisher is an Alcedinid vs kingfishers are part of the Alcedinidae family, antlers are a Cervid trait vs antlers are found in species of the Cervidae family. In the case of the kingfisher body if you're wanting to sound a little more scientific then you would call it an Alcedinid body rather than an Alcedinidae body ^_^

maybe there can be blue fur? so that it can hide in water or high places more efficiently

There's a suggestion for that here

The beak was a reference to the over all family of kingfishers. This includes the kookaburra which use their beaks beak stuff. But if you think it doesn't make sense I'll probably make a kookaburra one (unless there is already one).

Lol what O.o

I wasn't saying that strength wouldn't make sense, I was saying that the stats you suggested were op and it would make most sense to get rid of the strength. I would rather see it added as a specialised gene for fishing, given that kingfishers are largely adapted for it. Not every gene needs a secondary ability

I also don't think adding a kookaburra beak as well as a kingfisher beak would be necessary. They look very similar, and there are other beaks better adapted for attack like the hooked beak on birds of prey
