Because customizing islands is both popular but also hard to do, this is a compromise:
Simply being able to randomize an island - including ports - each time you go to a new one until you find one that you like.
This would cut out the steps of reloading a previous save over and over and make challenges easier - because you could have the exact port you want, the right amount of grass or trees.
Example: If you are doing a challenge a where you need to go to the jungle from a snow island, when you get to the snow island you could randomize it until you get a jungle port. You could also randomize until you have the right amount of trees, grass, hotsprings and icebergs.
How it could work: Each time you go to a new island you could see what it looks like, what the ports are, how many trees there are etc. If you don't like the look of it, you could click a button that would randomize it until you are pleased with it.
Also, this could allow a foundation for saving islands and further customizing although that's in the distant future.
