Darkstalker was an ancient NightWing-IceWing hybrid and one of the main protagonists of the first Legends novel, Darkstalker. He was also known as the most powerful dragon known in Pyrrhian history, since he was born during a brightest night and inherited animus magic from his father. He was also in a relationship with Clearsight until the conclusion of Darkstalker, in which she and Fathom were forced to trap him beneath Agate Mountain before he could rule the whole of Pyrrhia.

Darkstalker had ebony[2] black scales[3] and midnight-black wings,[4] appearing as a pure NightWing except for a line of icy, white,[5] silvery IceWing scales where his wings met his body.[6] He had one silver teardrop scale on the outward corner of his dark[7] eyes,[8] which were as black as underground caverns.[9] He had a narrow, handsome face, long, twisted horns,[9] and was enormous,[10] at least three times as tall as the largest living dragons.[11] His huge[12] wingspan was as wide as Agate Mountain,[13] and he had a long neck.[14] He wore a plain, white, half-hoop earring made of bone in his left ear.[15] He was handsome[16] and powerfully built,[17] with scales that felt as hard as armor.[18] He moved slowly and purposefully[19] and spoke in a cavernous, booming,[20] low rumble.[21]

Bruno Madrigal is a major character in Disney's 2021 animated feature film, Encanto. He is the only son of Alma Madrigal, with the gift to see into the future. Bruno's odd demeanor, affinity for rats, and often doomsaying visions had distinguished him as the "black sheep" of the Madrigals, resulting in his estrangement from the family. Following his disappearance, it became taboo to mention Bruno, who was reviled as a villainous figure by the townsfolk until his deep-rooted love for his family was unearthed.

Bruno is one of the three fraternal triplets of Alma and Pedro, his siblings being Julieta and Pepa. He is the maternal uncle of Isabela, Dolores, Luisa, Camilo, Mirabel and Antonio whose gift is the ability to see the future. His gift caused misery to his home town because of his often cryptic visions, which is why he was considered the black sheep of the Madrigal family. On the night of Mirabel's gift ceremony, after she did not get a gift, Abuela was worried and asked Bruno to see what the future showed about it. He had a vision with two possible outcomes: one was Mirabel in front of Casa Madrigal, the other was the same but with cracks all over the house. Due to the negative outcomes of his prophecies, he hid himself from the family and the world to protect Mirabel from everyone thinking she would be responsible for these soon to come cracks. His name was then considered taboo among his family (particularly Pepa, due to him ruining her and Felix’s wedding by causing her to make a hurricane after making a joke about rain, because of Pepa sweating) and the townsfolk. Nobody except Dolores knew his real location. But after he and his family rebuild Casita and the magic is restored, he reconciles with his mother, sisters, the rest of his family and presumably the townsfolk as well.

Due to the nature of his ability to look into the future, Bruno has been labeled as someone who makes bad things happen by both the village and his family. Despite being feared by almost the entire village, Bruno is a kind-hearted, caring man who possesses a strong love towards his family. Although he is described as a monster, the real Bruno is actually a quiet, shy, and kind person who can easily become nervous or suffer from anxiety similar to his sister Pepa. Bruno is quite insecure at the beginning of the film and believes that his gift only brings problems, however as he gets closer to his family again he becomes more cheerful and enthusiastic. He is also shown to be gentle with animals in a similar way to his youngest nephew, Antonio. He befriended the rats living within the walls of Casa Madrigal, sharing what little food he has with them and when the house crumbles, Bruno takes the rats with him before making his escape. Bruno takes quickly to Antonio’s animal friends, letting the Chispi join the vision and allowing the coatimundi to hang from his shoulder. He was even good to the horse he found and rode on to find Mirabel and Alma.

As a result of living for ten years in isolation within the walls of Casa Madrigal, Bruno developed an odd behavior where he would knock on wood, stumble, mutter, and develop two identities known as "Hernando", who is scared of nothing and "Jorge", who makes spackles, to keep himself occupied in his isolation, along with befriending some rats to keep him company. Yet, despite claiming he's fine with his isolation from his family, Bruno actually misses his family and longs to be with them, despite their negative opinions on him. He also shares a complicated relationship with his mother, Alma, due to his gift not living up to her expectations and, according to Mirabel, she only saw the worst in him. As a result of his mother's difficult attitude, Bruno was scared of her and wanted to avoid her, even though he wished to make his mother proud.

Despite the way they treated him and spoke ill of him after he left, Bruno is not spiteful. He quickly accepts his mother's apology when they meet again and is seen happily working with the townspeople as they rebuild the Casa Madrigal. Besides being a family-loving man, Bruno is a very selfless individual. He sacrificed his reputation amongst his family to protect his youngest niece Mirabel from being ostracized after having a vision of her and their family's magic disappearing. Bruno was even willing to take the blame for Mirabel after the Casita’s destruction and was prepared to face his mother in order to defend her, before his mother reconciled with him after realizing she and her idealism were the causes of Casa Madrigal's downfall.

Bruno's greatest wish is to be able to help his family. Although he was initially afraid of his mother, he did not have the same fear of his older sisters. The misunderstanding at Pepa’s wedding arose from his desire to help her relax and embrace her emotions. When they meet again, the moment he sees her he apologizes to her and Félix for ruining their wedding and sings to Pepa how much he loves her and how much he wants her to be herself. While he is a good uncle with Mirabel, in reality most of the young people in the family (with the exception of Camilo) do not have animosity or say anything bad about him and Antonio even considers him his friend, showing that he can become close to the younger members of the family just like his sisters.[2] Bruno loves his nieces and nephews very much, where he quickly forms a strong bond with Mirabel and gets along with his other nieces and nephews after he returns home.[3]

Bruno inherited most of his physical characteristics from his father, Pedro. He's a thin and unkempt-looking 50-year-old[4] man with overgrown, curly black hair with gray streaks, a big, pointy yet somewhat rounded nose, a thin mustache and a light beard. He has prominent eyebags under his eyes, light freckles on his face, and green eyes. He wears a green ruana with hourglasses over a burgundy shirt, brown pants, and black sandals. When he uses his precognitive powers, his irises glow bright green.

Bruno has the ability to see the future. To help focus and cope with the taxing nature of his power, Bruno performs a ritual that requires a large, open space to properly see his visions, initiating them by drawing a circle in the sand and burning leaves.[5] Bruno does not have full control of his ability and some visions can come involuntarily.[6][7]

Once the vision is initiated, his irises glow jade-green and the sand circle rises into the air to create a whirling dome of sand. As it whirls around him, the sand forms glowing green images that contain the visions. These images are not always clear and they do not always progress in proper chronological order, but when Bruno focuses on certain images, the vision increases in clarity. Should anyone else be within the circle, they can also see the visions and can help Bruno focus on certain parts of them. When the vision ends, Bruno creates a thick slab of jade green glass that contains an image of the most significant detail of the vision. If the vision has two possible outcomes, the slab of glass created can show both outcomes by tilting it at certain angles.

Around 2,000 years later, after being awakened by Peril at the end of Escaping Peril, Kinkajou used Darkstalker's own talisman to transform him into Peacemaker, a young dragonet with none of his former abilities and no memories of his past life[1]

Before losing Hope, Darkstalker was determined,[22] confident,[23] arrogant,[24] observant,[25] thoughtful,[18] cocky, proud,[26] defiant,[27] happy,[28] hopeful,[29] mischievous,[30] patient,[31] intelligent, intense, knowledgeable,[32] and sarcastic.[33] He was charming, courageous, and cared about those he loved very deeply.[30] He believed in not worrying excessively about the future, and preferred to focus on the present.[29] In his youth, he was willing to make an enormous sacrifice by creating his talisman in order to make Clearsight feel safe.[4] He hated sleeping, as he felt that he had so much to do, and missing out on things made him feel restless.[34] He was skilled at problem-solving,[35] and had a nervous energy about him whenever he had to tell someone something.[36] He knew how to play tricks with his words,[37]

Several of his earlier spells were kind: a doll carved to look like a scavenger that would appear at Whiteout's pillow every night; a plate that kept prey warm for Hope when she was late for dinner; a blanket that ensured peaceful sleep for Hope when she was in the Kingdom of Sand with the NightWing army; a set of paints for Whiteout that never dried or ran out; a bell that rang whenever Fathom felt sad or lonely.[38]

However, his later, larger spells were much more menacing: a dagger to kill one IceWing every full moon for one year; spells to torment classmates he hated in small, creative ways; a spell that sent nightmares to Diamond with all of the ways he planned to kill her.[39] He was crueler than necessary towards Arctic[40] and held a serious grudge against Indigo after she attempted to kill him.[41] He began hiding certain enchantments from Clearsight[42] and despite Clearsight stating she would never be okay with her feelings being manipulated,[36] and Fathom pleading with him not to use his animus magic,[43] he used his powers without regard to either of them. He was dismissive,[24] defiant, and even smiled at Clearsight when confronted about manipulating her foresight ability.[44] He was genuinely puzzled as to why Clearsight did not want him to murder Vigilance[45] and truly believed that Clearsight's moonstone earrings were simply a kindhearted, sweet gesture to help her focus less on desolate futures.[46] He was completely willing to force Clearsight and Fathom along the path he desired, even if he had to drag them along it kicking and screaming.[47] He was also willing to keep Clearsight in a relationship with him against her will, even if she had wanted to separate.[48]

After he began to seek vengeance upon the IceWing tribe, he became dishonest,[48] devious,[49] vengeful,[50] furious,[51] manipulative,[52] angry, and callous.[53] He radiated menace.[54] He adopted an unsettling[55] new smile that implied Darkstalker thought he would always be okay, and nothing bad could happen to him, and that he could arrange the world the way he wanted. The loss of his mother broke him into a thousand pieces on the inside, making him furious and devastated, but he could hide it very well.[56] He devolved into a sad, furious mourning,[57] but a strange angry kind where he kept insisting his mother would come home soon.[58]

Darkstalker then, suddenly, appeared happier and more energetic, explaining that he had found a way to deal with all of his most annoying problems.[59] These included enchanting Indigo to become trapped inside of a small wooden dragon, and to leave a note for Fathom to manipulate him into believing she had returned to the Kingdom of the Sea and did not love him anymore;[60] enchanting a pair of moonstone earrings for Clearsight to, unwillingly, be forced to focus on the brightest futures;[24] and enchanting Arctic to obey his every command.[61] He acted falsely sympathetic towards Fathom[62] and was grimly determined upon finding and punishing the dragon who had sent Quickdeath to assassinate him.[63] He eventually was eerily blank when facing the concept of Hope's death,[64] and wanted the NightWings to fear and respect him.[65] Clearsight saw multiple highly likely futures in which Darkstalker killed her after she stole his talisman,[66] and feared that Darkstalker would soon enchant away her and Fathom's ability to feel and think for themselves freely.[67]

After awakening from his sleeping spell, Darkstalker acted like a charming, sincere,[68] ambitious[69] leader, causing other dragons to follow him.[70] Immediately after being released, he cast a secret enchantment to make other dragons believe that he was charming, friendly,[71] humbled, and unambitious.[72] However, after being released from said enchantment, Darkstalker was seen as brainwashing, genocidal,[73] complicated,[74] sinister,[75] evil, and deserving of what had come to him.[76] When Moonwatcher explained how fundamentally wrong killing the entire IceWing tribe was, he only growled that they had started it.[77] He appeared externally to be polite,[78] friendly, at peace, and slightly bored.[79] His gaze was intense, and made Qibli feel as though Darkstalker could look through him, to see all the versions of Qibli that had ever existed and all of the ones that might ever be.[80] He was desperately lonely,[73] but did not trust other animus dragons; each one was a threat to his absolute power.[81] He was careful to feed his subjects' vanity and need for usefulness so that they would love him all the more.[82] He wanted to make the world a better place, and he wanted genuine friends,[83] but it was difficult for him to admit when he was wrong,[84] and he was astounded and upset by the soul reader's opinion of his lack of morality.[85] His choices were vengeful,[86] dark, and damaging,[87] even if he genuinely believed they would lead to the best future.

When Strongwings, Fierceteeth, and Preyhunter were asleep, Sunny stole the trio's Obsidian Mirror and wrote in red mud that resembled blood: "TURN BACK. YOU FLY TOWARDS YOUR DEATH." When they woke up, Fierceteeth yelled at Preyhunter for losing the mirror, while Strongwings was paralyzed by fear, saying it was the work of The Darkstalker, a legendary NightWing monster. Preyhunter added that The Darkstalker played with his prey until they were paralyzed with fear before attacking. Fierceteeth disregards this, and the trio continues flying.

Darkstalker began to speak telepathically to Moonwatcher when she arrived at Jade Mountain Academy, firstly as an anonymous character in her head before revealing his name. Later, as Moon suffers from a dream of a dark future, Darkstalker pulls her out of the vision and teaches her how to block out prophetic thoughts. He was devastated when he learned that over 5,012 years had passed since the Scorching.

Later, while Moonwatcher read a scroll on animus history in search of information on dreamvisitors, she came across the legend of Fathom and Darkstalker. Darkstalker then admitted that he was the same mind-reading, prophetic animus dragon from the legend. He claimed that history had gotten it wrong, and he was not a monster. After two thousand years, the bracelet that Fathom enchanted to make Darkstalker sleep for all eternity had snapped due to the tremors caused by the Orb in the Sky, allowing him to wake up.

After an explosion that killed two students at Jade Mountain Academy, Carnelian and Bigtail, and injured Tamarin, Darkstalker helped Moonwatcher figure out who had caused it, without telling her things that he knew would lead to her death. After discovering the real killer, Sora, and the deadly secret that Icicle had been hiding, he was afraid to let Moonwatcher leave because he was afraid that if she left him too long, he would go insane from being alone.

When Moonwatcher brought up a question about Darkstalker, Winter ranted about how he and his mother ruined everything for the IceWings. Later, when Winter and Hailstorm go to face the Diamond Trial, they encountered Foeslayer, who Winter realised was the mother of Darkstalker. Darkstalker narrates the epilogue, in which he reads the minds of Onyx, Anemone, and Peril.

Darkstalker is noted at the end of the book as the true owner of the animus touched scroll. Moon revealed to her friends that it is Darkstalker's and not for them to use. She then told them that they should return the scroll to its rightful owner. The other dragonets disagree, but Moon sneaks away in the middle of the night to give the scroll to Darkstalker anyway. The dragons tried to follow, but Peril, who got there first, being a SkyWing, was told by Moon that Darkstalker had written the enchantment, "Enchant Arctic the IceWing to obey my every command" and forced Arctic, his father, to disembowel himself. Moonwatcher cried out that dragons are not things that you could enchant like objects, and Darkstalker tried to apologize — Moon refused to listen to this. Winter and Qibli later caught up, arguing over the animus touched scroll. Peril ended the discussion by burning up the scroll, which resulted in Darkstalker being released, following the enchantment "if the scroll is destroyed, all of [Darkstalker's] power will return to him" in a giant, magic-induced earthquake. When the mountain they were next to begins to crack, Darkstalker emerged, spreading his wings. He thanked Peril for helping him escape, giving a sinister smile to the Jade Winglet.

Eventually convincing the Jade Winglet that he was not evil and casting a spell to help convince Winter, he travelled to Jade Mountain to see the original dragonets of destiny and pick up any information on Clearsight or Fathom. He then had a conversation with Anemone, Tsunami, and Moonwatcher about animus power. Darkstalker revealed that he knew Anemone killed Whirlpool. Afterward, he told Moon he would make something else to keep his soul safe, as well as Anemone's. To this, Moon responded that it might not matter since Darkstalker still caused his father's death with an untainted soul. In his defense, Darkstalker argued that Arctic was about to betray the tribe and told the dragonets what actually happened. He then made a statement about Moon possibly being Clearsight's descendant. After Moon and Tsunami leave, he enchanted both Anemone's and his talismans to keep their souls safe. Afterward, Darkstalker spoke to anyone who came to him and searched scrolls for references of Fathom and Clearsight. Flame passed by, and Darkstalker offered to heal his face. Flame was suspicious and told Darkstalker not to lie to him, as Stonemover had said that he would not, or could not, heal his face. After convincing Flame that he could heal him without any strings attached, Flame agrees, and Darkstalker enchanted a flower to heal his face. After being healed, Flame bolted away without thanking Darkstalker. Mightyclaws, Mindreader and Fearless were then introduced to Darkstalker by Moon. He told them about the old NightWing Kingdom and agreed to enchant an object for each to give them any power they wish.
