Feathers in the Fire Chapter One: Heatwave Hawks didn’t move. Couldn’t. Dabi’s words hung in the air like smoke — thick, suffocating, impossible to ignore. “You’re imagining things,” Hawks finally said, but his voice lacked its usual easy confidence. Dabi stepped closer, slow and deliberate, like he was approaching a wild animal he knew would bolt if he moved too fast. “Am I?” Hawks’ wings twitched, feathers tightening in a defensive arc. “You’re a villain. I’m a hero. That’s the beginning and end of it.” Dabi’s laugh was low, rough, and far too amused. “If that were true, you wouldn’t look at me like that.” “Like what?” “Like you’re trying to decide whether to arrest me… or kiss me.” Hawks’ breath caught. Heat rushed up his neck, and he cursed himself for reacting. “You’re delusional.” “Maybe.” Dabi’s eyes glinted. “But you didn’t deny it.” Hawks opened his mouth — to argue, to deflect, to say anything — but the warehouse door slammed somewhere behind them. A metallic echo rolled through the space. Hawks’ feathers snapped outward instantly, sharp and ready. Dabi’s flames flared to life along his arms, blue and hungry. For one heartbeat, they stood back‑to‑back — enemies forced into alliance, rivals syncing without a word. Hawks whispered, “Left side’s yours.” Dabi smirked. “Try to keep up.” The intruders moved fast — masked, armed, clearly not expecting two of the most dangerous men in Japan to be sharing the same room. Hawks launched upward in a burst of red feathers, slicing through the first attacker’s weapon. Dabi surged forward, flames roaring, forcing the others to scatter. They fought like they’d done it a hundred times. They fought like they understood each other’s rhythms. They fought like rivals who knew exactly how to push each other higher. When the last intruder hit the ground, unconscious and smoking, Hawks landed lightly, wings folding. Dabi wiped a smear of soot from his cheek. “Not bad, birdbrain.” “You’re welcome,” Hawks said, trying to sound unaffected. “I saved your ass.” Dabi stepped close again — too close — until Hawks could feel the heat radiating off his skin. “You keep saying that. Starting to think you like having me owe you.” Hawks swallowed. “Don’t flatter yourself.” Dabi leaned in, voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “I don’t need to. You’re already flustered.” Hawks hated that he was. Hated that Dabi knew it. Hated that part of him didn’t want to step away. “Get out of here,” Hawks said, softer than he meant to. “Before backup arrives.” Dabi’s smirk faded into something quieter. “You’re protecting me now?” “Don’t make it weird.” Dabi’s eyes lingered on him for a moment too long. “Fine. But this isn’t over.” He turned toward the shadows, flames dimming. Hawks exhaled shakily. “It never is with you.” Dabi paused, glancing back with a half‑smile that was almost… gentle. “Heatwave, remember? You started it.” And then he was gone, swallowed by the dark. Hawks stood alone in the warehouse, heart pounding, wings trembling, knowing one thing with absolute clarity: He wasn’t sure if he wanted to catch Dabi… or chase him. Chapter Two: Afterburn Hawks hated how quiet the sky felt. Usually, flying cleared his head — the wind, the height, the freedom. But tonight, every beat of his wings only reminded him of the warehouse, of blue flames flickering too close, of Dabi’s voice curling around his thoughts like smoke. He landed on a rooftop overlooking the city, feathers folding tight. The moonlight caught the edges of his wings, turning them silver. He should’ve felt calm. He didn’t. A soft buzz from his earpiece broke the silence. “Report,” the Commission handler said. Hawks hesitated. “Ran into interference.” “Interference?” He could lie. He should lie. But the memory of Dabi stepping close — heat brushing his skin, words brushing his nerves — made his voice falter. “Dabi,” Hawks said quietly. “He showed up.” A pause. “And?” Hawks clenched his jaw. “We fought off a third party. He left.” Another pause. Longer. Sharper. “You’re getting too familiar with him.” Hawks’ wings twitched. “It’s not like that.” “It better not be. He’s dangerous.” Hawks didn’t respond. Dangerous was an understatement — but not in the way the Commission meant. He ended the call and stared out over the city. He didn’t know how long he stood there before he felt it — a shift in the air, a warmth at his back. “You’re terrible at pretending you didn’t want to see me again.” Hawks spun, feathers flaring. Dabi stood behind him, hands in his pockets, flames dormant but presence unmistakable. He looked like he belonged in the shadows — like the night bent around him. “How did you find me?” Hawks demanded. Dabi smirked. “You’re loud. Even when you’re quiet.” “That doesn’t make sense.” “Neither do you.” Hawks hated the way his pulse jumped. “You shouldn’t be here.” “And yet,” Dabi said, stepping closer, “here I am.” Hawks backed up a step — only for Dabi to follow, closing the distance with infuriating ease. “You’re reckless,” Hawks said. “You’re conflicted,” Dabi countered. Hawks swallowed hard. “You’re a villain.” Dabi’s voice dropped. “And you’re a hero who keeps meeting me alone at night. Funny how that works.” Hawks felt heat crawl up his neck. “This isn’t—” “Don’t say it’s not something,” Dabi murmured. “You’re a bad liar.” Hawks’ wings tightened. “Why are you here?” Dabi’s expression shifted — still sharp, still dangerous, but softer around the edges. “Because someone else is hunting you.” Hawks froze. “What?” “Those guys in the warehouse? They weren’t after me.” Dabi’s eyes glinted. “They were after you.” Hawks’ stomach dropped. “Why?” “Don’t know.” Dabi stepped even closer, voice low. “But I’m not letting anyone else take you out.” Hawks stared at him, breath caught. “Why do you care?” Dabi’s answer was quiet. Too quiet. “Because I do.” The rooftop felt suddenly too small, the air too warm, the space between them too charged. Hawks whispered, “This is a bad idea.” Dabi’s lips curved. “Most good things start that way.” For a moment, neither of them moved. Then Hawks’ feathers relaxed — just slightly. And Dabi noticed — immediately. “See?” he murmured. “You’re not running.” Oh I can add more if you guys like it. Its a fanfic on Hotwings (DabiHawks), I can upload a ShinDenki one too if you want. -
