I drew a mockup of a pattern I think would look nice. I based it off of fish, which is why the glowing color is blue. Nice idea btw!

I like the idea of bioluminescent nichelings, and this picture is a good representation of how it could look. It reminds me very much of the Na’vi from the movie Avatar.

I think that'd be a little too much. Especially since that'd totally negate the Bearyena hind legs which are only +1 to speed, strength and swimming.

I think having no speed and swimming on them would be best, since they're ideally meant to compliment winged creatures. Just the strength and fishing.

Yes, I personally think it might be too much as well, but since all hind leg genes have at least +1 speed and swimming, I think a bird hind leg gene should as well, otherwise some nichelings would not be able to move.

I understand where @Ancestor Nature is coming from. If bird hindlegs were added without speed and your creature didn’t have wings or a body with speed, that creature wouldn’t be able to move.

Yes, that is what I mean.

The legs need to at least give one speed. Maybe no swiming bonus could be a good way to balance that out. OR maybe the legs could only give +2 fishing and no atack. Or maybe it could be like the wings, if the creature has wings the legs give +1 strenght and +2 fishing, but if the creature dosn't have them it only gives 1 speed.

A bird hind leg gene would not need strength, so perhaps strength could be removed, leaving +1 speed, +1 swimming and +2 fishing. It would not be as strong, but it would be more fair.

or maybe insted of "You unlocked a new Gene" it says "You Unlocked Nimble Fingers/Bearyena Snout/ Water Body/Claw"

This is a good idea, and in fact, I think all notifications should be changed in this way. They would be much more helpful if they called your nichelings by name instead of as "one of your animals".

  4. A bird hind leg gene would fit perfectly with the new update, especially since there is a new swooping interaction. Perhaps it would offer +1 speed, +1 swimming, +1 strength and +2 fishing?

  5. While I like the idea of a collecting tail, the design just does not look realistic to me. No real animals have split tails, and I do not think nichelings would either. If it was just prehensile, It could still be used to collect in a limited capacity.

  6. My intention with the lifespan gene slot suggestion was to find a solution that would please everybody, because although the most people would happy with a lifespan setting in sandbox mode, that would also mean that it would not be available in story mode. It is just a possibility, and ultimately it will be up to the community to decide.

  7. While I would also prefer the scorpion tail to look more mammalian, (stinger tail?) most people are happy with the way it looks now, so I think color separation would be a good compromise. Perhaps in the future, more insectoid genes could be added to match it.

  8. I would like to suggest the addition of a new gene slot for lifespan, of which there would be three: short lifespan, medium lifespan, and long lifespan.

A nicheling with the short lifespan gene would live for 20 days, a nicheling with the medium lifespan gene would live for 25 days, and a nicheling with the long lifespan gene would live for 30 days. People have expressed a desire for either shorter or longer lifespans, so this solution would please everybody and add an interesting new element to gameplay. Like most genes, it would be selected from the mutation menu to mutate onto a nicheling's offspring, if desired. Perhaps gene dominance would go in the order of: short lifespan > medium lifespan > long lifespan. This would make the long lifespan gene difficult to obtain, but rewarding to keep, because it would increase your tribe's chance of survival.

A lifespan gene slot is not my original idea, but I wanted to suggest it again so that the idea is not forgotten.

  9. In version 1.1.0 of Niche a new beak gene has been added, which is very similar in name to the platypus beak. Might I suggest differentiating them better, perhaps by renaming the beak gene to bird beak? This would be a simple change, and might be considered insignificant to some people, but I thought I should mention it.

  10. In version 1.1.0 of Niche, there is a new attribute called attractiveness which sounds interesting. The current description of it is: "How attracted wild animals of the opposite sex are to an animal". Does anybody know what role attractiveness will play in the game?

  11. No volcanic islands currently exist in the game, but one was featured on the Niche kickstarter page, so I would like to suggest how I think a volcanic island would work.

A volcanic island would be a hot, tropical island rimmed by vegetation. It would range in difficulty from Medium to Killer, and would present some of the greatest challenges in the game. It would have its own prey, predators and genes, and would progress through phases like the First Snow, Summer Mountains, Long Winter and Frost Lands islands.

    Phase One

    • the volcano is dormant

    Phase Two

    • the volcano begins to rumble and spew ash

    Phase Three

    • the ash begins to pile and can be cleared like snow

    Phase Four

    • the volcano erupts

    Phase Five

    • lava begins to flow from the volcano's summit, and will progress down the island at the rate of one tile per day

    Phase Six

    • the lava stops and the volcano goes dormant again

Lava would be avoided by moving around it, to higher ground, or through water. If the lava touches any vegetation, it would start a wildfire. Moving nichelings through lava would damage them, but leaving them in lava would kill them. All animals would flee from lava.

  12. I saw this idea suggested in the first community voting, and was disappointed when it was overlooked, so I am glad it is getting proper recognition now. Carrying baby nichelings would be an immersive and useful addition to the game, and would save many tribes from extinction, so it is definitely something I would want.

  13. It would be nice to have more weather types in Niche, not only for immersion but for gameplay as well. The new antenna gene would also benefit from this change by having more weather to sense. I have compiled a list of possible new weather types below.

    Fog

    • sight reduced by -2
    • white fur increases camouflage by +2

    Thunderstorm

    • all animals have a chance to be struck by lightning
    • lightning has a chance to start a wildfire

    Hail

    • all animals have a chance to be stunned
    • animals are protected by taking shelter

Suggestions on how these new weather types could be improved are welcome.

  14. I made a similar suggestion to this in the first community voting,  but it was not among the most popular suggestions at the time, and was overlooked. I would still like to see this added to the game, because it would help roleplayers and increase immersion. Separating the family tree by generations is a good idea to prevent lag, but preferably it would be seamless.

  15. Nicheling notes would be a helpful addition for the roleplayers of Niche. Ideally, it would be an optional tab to record information about your nichelings in more detail than the family tree can provide, such as: their name, their age, their physical appearance, who their parents were, who their siblings were, who their mate was, how much offspring they produced, how far they traveled and how they died. Nicheling notes would be recorded in the family tree even long after their death, so that their contribution to the tribe’s history would be remembered.

I think this idea has potential, and could bring new meaning to the game for the truly dedicated.

  16. I like the addition of the family tree in Niche, but I think it could be improved upon. Currently, ancestors are not recorded in the family tree and are eventually deleted, showing only the current generation. Part of the enjoyment of creating the family tree is going back and looking at the ancestors, so I think this would be a good change to make. This would also make it easier to manage your nichelings, as you would be able to see exactly who is descended from who. As some players have tribes of over one hundred members, a scrolling feature could be added to the family tree when it becomes too long. I would also like to suggest adding bearyenas to the family tree when it mates with one of your nichelings, similar to rogue males. The hybrid offspring currently only shows one parent, and besides looking at their bearyena genes, there is no way to tell if they are descended from one.
