    • Cuprite growled as she swatted away another bug. She could only do so much, swishing her tail and swiping at the irritating pests when the small group wasn’t moving around, but the swarms had grown larger and larger without end in sight. “Ugh, these things are trying to bite through my fur!” She said as she shook her head at the endless buzzing. Ram grumbled his agreement as another one tried to bite his exposed nose, even his patience growing thin at this point. “Stag, get back here” The pup froze at the sound of his dad’s voice, paw frozen in the air as he was trying to sneak off to fight the swarm himself. “Whaaat? I was just trying to help” Stag huffed as he sat down onto his haunches. “I know, but if we can’t fight these bugs off than neither can you” Ram said, ear flicking as he swatted one more of the pests. “You won’t even let me try” He grumbled, tucking his head down with a pout. “Don’t worry little Prince, you’ll get to help fight a bunch of things when you’re older!” Cuprite tried to cheer up her son with some encouraging words, which seemed to work if the smile on his face was any indicator. “Why don’t we find somewhere far from here where there’s no bugs? I could show you how to hunt if we find some rabills” Cuprite suggested making Stag’s tail wag. “Yes!” He suddenly bounced up and the pout was long gone. It seemed like the perfect time too, seeing as the bugs were becoming more aggressive in their attempts. None of the nichelings could even see each-other through the swarm that descended. “Mom?! Dad?!” Stag called out in alarm at the sudden lack of sight. “Don’t worry, just follow our voices!” Cuprite said as she started to sprint away, occasionally talking as she did with Ram close behind.   Cuprite gasped a breath of relief as she slowed to a stop. There were no signs of the swarm anymore as she padded through the bright green grass while looking around. “Stag? Ram?” Her call yielded the sight of her mate, making her smile as she bounded over to him. “Ram! Now where’s our little Prince?” She said making the other nicheling’s eyes shoot open. “You don’t have him?!” His usual quiet was traded for noise as Ram looked at Cuprite was horror as a sickening realization washed over him. “I thought he followed you!” The Queen’s happy mood shattered at the lack of her son’s presence, head turning this way and that for any sign of him. “We have to find him, what Queen loses their own pup?!” Cuprite said as she fought back the tears that threatened to fall, shaking her head to focus. “You go check to see if he didn’t move, I’ll check this way” Ram tilted his head in the other direction causing Cuprite to nod as she set off. - Cuprite’s search turned up empty as she braved swarms just to find the faint scent of her son but nothing else to show where he could’ve gone while Ram couldn’t find a single sign of the pup. The two didn’t stop, even as Cuprite’s pregnancy became more obvious with each passing day. Cuprite’s plan of excitedly telling Stag he was going to have a little sibling had been crushed, as the swarm attacked just a single day before she planned to. She had to be all but forced to rest when she was panting with exhaustion after another fruitless search for her pup. “How could I keep this pup safe if I can’t even find our little Prince?” Cuprite tried to cover her tear-stained face with her paws as she curled into herself. “We’ll find Stag and show him his little sibling, no matter how long it takes” Ram tried to soothe his mate despite the worries that rampaged through his own mind, wondering if they ever would find their lost son but hoping for the best.
