  1. Aesthecially, I do not like derp snout and purr snout (although the latter is quite useful). I love gills and poison fangs, soooo cute.

I avoid wings unless I have a big population, because they do not help with feeding or gathering at all.

My breeding aim is gills, water body, fishing tail, lilac eyes, mask pattern, yellow and white color, antlers, and I try to have all kinds of front legs in the pack.

  2. Hi people,

Is there any way to get home island immunity when you lost it at some point in story mode?

I learned just now that it is important, and I am at over 100 generations already. Have been through a few islands already and developed cute fishy nichelings, so I do not want to start over.

  3. Happens a lot to me, and it is super annoying/sometimes sad...

For once, I would reduce the area of the sun where the next day triggers. Currently, not only the inside of the circle triggers it, but also if you hit the surrounding beams. Please remove those beams from the clickable area.

Also, you could highlight the sun if the mouse is in the area where the next day would be triggered.

  4. Here it is: Scales thread

Philo proposed to implement it as “skin/hair type” gene. Sounds like the body gene would need to be tweaked as well then so it makes sense together.

In my opinion, body should just affect the shape while hide/skin modifies it.

So far we have fur, feathers, scales, no hair.

How about feathers help with flying (further?), fur gives cold protection, no hair heat resistance, scales give defense. There might be a different type of scales that help with swimming.

Maybe remove armored body and toxic body and make it into skin types.

  5. I tried to generate a steam configuration, but it was too hard to open skills/genes/mutations/family tree because I had to map the gamepad stick to mouse movement.

I imagine something like this (using a Logitec gamepad):

    - Upper shoulder buttons to toggle through active animals (like Tab on the keyboard).

    - Left stick to select a direction/hex field originating from the currently selected animal, trigger key to increase the distance. Maybe easier to implement (?) but more fiddly would be to use the left stick to direct a pointer to the field you want. A white outline indicates the currently selected hex field.

    - X to select an action (like a mouse click), A to open the selection of available actions if there are multiple, directional pad to select one of the available action, B to cancel (like esc key) / return from that selection. Y button opens a menu with a list of all animals to select one faster than toggling through them.

    - Right stick to move the camera, Zoom by holding the left trigger while moving the right stick.

    - Option button (the one left of start) opens the skills/genes/mutations/family tree menu, directional pad to select which you want, A to open it.

    - Start button opens the options menu (for options, exit game, etc)

    That leaves the family tree:

A and B to open a list with the genes / phenotypes respectively to set the filter.

Toggle through animals with upper should buttons. In addition, here I would use the left stick as a mouse pointer for selecting.

Press X to rename an animal (of course at that point, you need an additional keyboard, or just go with the suggested names).

Oh, I actually tried exactly that... on the couch, using our huge TV. The names in the family tree were unreadable though in 4K resolution.

  6. This game is just awesome! It scratches exactly the itch that I have since Spore, but better.

I did not back the Kickstarter because I found it to risky (you never know with software Kickstarters), picked it up in a steam sale instead. I realize that Niche deserves the full prize for the hours of fun I had since. To compensate, I wrote a positive steam review, but if you ever have any add-ons for a few Euros, count me in.
