If you're going with the real-time strategy angle, how about field of vision mechanics? Instead of a lit up circle all around the animal, have only the part of the cicle it sees light up. Nichelings with forward-facing eyes could be better hunters due to increased depth-perception, while nichelings with eyes on the side of their head could notice approaching predators easier. This could be a trait that's affected by the head gene, since that already determines eye placement on the current 3d models
