The winged figure trotted through the dark lands, keeping her ears perked and senses sharp. She didn't know what lived here, and if it was dangerous, she didn't care to find out. She spotted a few other figures, their shapes unidentifiable at first glance, but they looked similar enough to herself that she figured they were safe. She turned sharply and trotted toward them, stopping just a branch-length away and sitting to observe. She didn't speak.
"Hey! Another pair of lights....erm...eyes? Over there!" The spirit pointed at the pair approaching.

“I wanted to ask you something” Chestnut said making Peony look at her dad, confused.

“You did look happy about Coffee but you did also look conflicted” Chestnut pointed out making Peony freeze and slightly bristle before sighing.
“I love Cherry and Coffee but I wanted to wait, I wanted to be older when I had a pup. I’m not prepared” Peony explained as she looked back towards the pack.
“I see, well what’s done is done and you should make sure to not neglect the pup because of that” Chestnut said as he looked at Peony.
“I know, I just wish I had more time to prepare” Peony said.
“I know” Chestnut simply said before walking off to patrol the territory.
Cookie walked over to Sparrow, hoping this would go well.
“Hey um Sparrow?” He said making Sparrow turn in his general direction.
“Yes?” Sparrow asked, a bit concerned about the nervous, well more nervous than usual anyway, tone his voice had.
“I um, Ii wanted to know if you’d be my mate?” Cookie forced out, hoping this wouldn’t ruin the relationship the two had.
“If you want, sure. You’re kind” Sparrow said and internally sighed at the fact she couldn’t think of something better to say.
“You said yes? THANK YOU!” Cookie chirped excitedly before leaning against Sparrow.
“Of course” Sparrow said with a grin.
(I know it’s a bit sudden but listen I want the new babies to be around the same age for story purposes and this was the plan anyways)
Cookie was staring in shock at his pup. He was expecting many things but a bright blue pup was not one of them.
“Are you alright?” Sparrow asked, a bit concerned at Cookie’s silence.
“Yes it’s just, I’m a cream colored nicheling, you’re a brown one, and our pup is blue” Cookie asked, which wasn’t extremely helpful to Sparrow.
“Like the rivers?” Sparrow recalled being told they were a pretty blue color, along with the sea.
“Yes, though that’s actually a good name for our pup” Cookie said as he looked at the tiny, vibrant pup.
“River?” Sparrow asked making Cookie nod before realizing his mistake.
“Yeah, River” Cookie clarified.
“Sounds like a good name to me” Sparrow agreed as she nuzzled the pup.
“It’s a lovely name” Cookie said as he smiled at the two.
Much more shocking was when only a moon after River was born Mystic returned from being gone a few days with two newborn pups, to the confusion of the rest of the pack.
“Who’s are they?” Cherry asked as he looked at the pups.
“Not important” Mystic slightly growled defensively, making Cherry take a step back.
The whole pack had gathered curiously.
“Let’s not bother her with those questions, what are their names?” Chestnut’s question made Mystic seem to relax somewhat.
“Ring” She gestured to the one with a darker brown coloring. “And Shade” She gestured to the lighter brown one.
“Wonderful names for them, I hope they grow strong and healthy” Chestnut said with a nod before stepping back.
The pack decided to leave her alone as she looked like she was going to bite whoever asked another question.
“Aren’t you curious about who the other parent of those two are?” Peony asked as she patrolled with her brother.
“Not really, not my problem” Walnut shrugged it off but that phrasing made Peony suspicious.
“Do you have any idea who the other parent is?” She asked as she stood in front of Walnut making him stop and look at her.
“No” He said but he averted his eyes before stepping around her and continuing to walk along.
“Are you sure?” Peony pressed making Walnut slightly bristle.
“I’m sure, why are you pestering me about it so much?” Walnut slightly growled which just served to make Peony more suspicious.
She was quiet for a little bit to let him calm down before throwing out a theory his responses had given her.
“Are Ring and Shade your pups?” She asked making him freeze for a little bit. Before his fur bristled bad enough to look sharp.
“I would never have pups with her, she’s irritating” Walnut hissed but just as he knew it was a lie so did Peony.
“Awful rude to not help raise your own pups” Peony spoke before continuing the patrol.
“You didn’t even want your pup” Walnut scoffed making Peony irritated.
“I may not have been ready but at least I’m raising mine” She replied making Walnut grumble but not speak again as they continued the patrol with more tension than usual.
Walnut was confused when Peony silently gestured for him to follow her but was shocked when he saw when she had led him to.
“He’s dead?” He asked as he turned to Peony to just wordlessly nodded. “Should we tell the rest of the pack?” Walnut asked making Peony sigh.
“I feel we deserve to mourn a little first” She said which Walnut couldn’t exactly disagree with, if they told the pack they would swarm the place.
After a little bit of silence Peony spoke up.
“Would’ve been nice if he knew his other pup had pups” Walnut glared at her for that, which she returned.
‘So much for getting along again’ He thought with irritation but knew it wasn’t the time for a fight.
They told the pack and everyone was shocked and sad.
Sparrow wouldn’t say she was close to Chestnut but he had led them to this island and been the unofficial ‘leader’ for the pack and kept some order in it so she mourned him for his leadership and kindness.
Cookie was hurt by it as Chestnut was Acorn’s brother so he ended up being close to him due to that.
Cherry and Mystic didn’t know him well enough to personally mourn over him but they were respectful.
“What exactly are we looking for again?” Ring asked as the group of teen nciehlings were moving beyond their territory.
“She just told us” River rolled her eyes as she realized Ring forgot something important again.
“Coffee swore she saw some odd blue stones so we’re going to investigate” Shade reminded Ring as he was used to his brother’s bad memory by now.
“Still can’t believe we’re looking something she might’ve saw” River said with a sigh making Coffee huff.
“It’ll be a fun adventure if nothing else” Coffee responded making River just shake her head as she followed the group. She wasn’t having fun here but her dad was kinda overprotective, like she’d fall apart if a thorn got caught in her paw.
“Sure” River simply said.
“Well it IS fun! We’re going to a completely new part of the island, weren’t you guys so bored being in the same territory all the time?” Coffee asked they continued through the fields and tall grasses.
“Not that much” Shade said with a shrug, he was content where he was.
“I guess I can’t entirely disagree with that” River replied.
After about a day of traveling they came across the stones! And a striped nicheling who was, if we’re honestly completely failing at, fishing by the shore.
“What are you doin?” Ring asked making the striped nicheling jump before looking at the younger nichelings.
“Fishing” The nicheling answered, wondering why such young nichelings were wandering by themselves.
“You’re not very good at it” River said a snarky comment making the other nichelings stare in shock before Shade spoke up.
“River that’s rude!” He slightly growled wondering why, even if it was true, say that directly to the nicheling’s face.
“Think you could do better?” The nicheling said, not that offended, mostly amused.
“No but at least I know not to try” River scoffed.
“Well why are you young nichelings alone?” The nicheling asked as she tilted her head at them.
“We’re exploring and we were going to investigate those blue stones you’re standing on” Coffee said making the nicheling look down at the stones.
“Ah, from what I’ve heard from travelers these type of stones lead to a very cold island” The nicheling said catching everyone, even River’s, attention.
“What else have you heard?” Coffee asked excitedly as she realized this nicheling may know a lot about them.
“The type of island this leads to is so cold that nichelings even freeze if they don’t huddle in groups. And it has no berries or edible plants, only meat and perhaps roots” The nicheling continued explaining making Coffee practically have stars in her eyes.
“That sounds so exciting maybe we could convince the pack to go!” Coffee said as she spun around to looke at the other teen nichelings.
“Heh, I’d be a bit more wary” The nicheling said making the teens look at her, confused. “Not only is there limited food but i’ve heard of pack of creatures that look similar to nicheligns who are vicious and swarm lone nichlings, and of huge creatures called balance bears who chase entire packs through to snow mercilessly” The nicheling thought the looks of horror on their faces were a little amusing, but she wasn’t exactly lying.
“…Well that’s even more exciting!” Coffee spoke, having got over the fear already while the Shade STRONGLY disagreed.
“We’d die!” He protested as the other two looked concerned but not as afraid as Shade did.
“That’s the fun part!” Coffee grinned, almost vibrating from her excited bouncing.
“How is potentially dying fun???” Shade asked mystified.
“Because life would never be boring or monotone again” Coffee explained, hoping she could convince the rest of the pack.
Shade just sighed knowing he wouldn’t convince her not to.
“What’s your name anyways?” Ring asked making the nicheling smile.
“I’m Mirata” She said.
“Well it’s been fun but our pack is probably worried” Coffee sighed, wanting to stay but knowing it wouldn’t go well.
“Alright, perhaps we’ll meet again” Mirata said before the teens started going back.
“Adventurous ones aren’t they?” She said to herself with a smile before going back to trying to fish.
The older nichelings were concerned as they expected.
“You four disappeared, you’re going to give me a heart attack!” Cherry said as he went up to his daughter.
“We were investigating something” Coffee huffed.
“You’re going to get killed wandering off like that” Mystic said, somewhat coldly, to her two pups making them slightly shrink while Walnut looked over but then looked away before anyone noticed.
“Sorry mom” Ring spoke while Shade just looked at his paws.
“You’re not hurt are you? Are you-” River cut Cookie’s questions off.
“I’m fine dad” River said.
“That’s good” Sparrow said with a smile.
“Anyways I wanted to ask something to the whole pack” Coffee said getting the whole pack’s attention. “We found some blue stones and larger stones that apparently lead to another island and wanted to know if we could go” Coffee asked with a smile.
“From what I’ve heard it leads to a really cold and dangerous island” Mystic scoffed making most of the back immediately protest that idea much to Coffee’s chagrin.
“C’mon isn’t it boring staying in the same place all the time?” Coffee said.
“I’m not sure about the others but for you, you can when you become an adult” Peony said as she looked at her daughter making her excited.
“Great!” Coffee chirped before walking off to get some berries while the other teens were trying to convince their parents too, except for Shade who was hoping his brother wouldn’t be able to convince Mystic.
Peony knew she and her brother weren’t exactly best friends anymore but she was still concerned when he started growing much weaker, when they weren’t old nichelings yet.
“What’s wrong with you? You’ve been sleeping a lot more and can barely hunt” Peony asked making Walnut bristle before sneezing.
“I’m not weak! I’m fine” He growled before sneezing again.
“Is your sickness taking a toll on you?” Peony asked making him glare at her.
“My sickness isn’t making me weak” Walnut growled again which Peony just sighed at.
“If it is you should be resting, not hunting and patrolling” Peony suggested.
“I’m FINE” He emphasized the word as if that would make it go away.
“If it gets worse just please tell” Peony sighed before leaving him be for the time being.
“Whatever” Was all she heard from Walnut as she walked off.
She regretted that choice a few days later after she found her brother’s lifeless body laying in the grasses.
‘I knew I should’ve tried harder’ She though angrily to herself as she looked at his blank eyes, feeling guilt try to eat her alive.
She told the rest of the pack and they all mourned, even Mystic seemed a bit more sad than she was when Chestnut died, though if her theory was right maybe she was…
The teens had grown into adults and since they had all convinced their parents to let them go when they were grown it was time to go.
Cookie wanted to go but when Sparrow said she couldn’t do it again he was torn but ended up choosing Sparrow and deciding to stay with her and Mystic wanted to stay where she was born meaning only Cherry and Peony went with the younger nichelings.
“Are we all ready” Peony asked the group making them all nod, some happier than others. “Alright, be sure to watch your steps everyone” She said as she started jumping across the stones, happy she had some experience from when she was a teen, making sure the others didn’t slip into the ocean and drown.
The whole pack was mystified when they arrived, not on a snowy cold island, but a warm grassy one.
“But it was supposed to be cold” Coffee said confused, and kinda irritated since this place was supposed to be really different from her home island.
“Well at least it’ll be safer” Peony said before she led them into their new home.

Setup:
Ideally you would start this challenge on a jungle island, but it doesn't have to be. (It's just named that for lack of a better name lol)
Start out with 1-2 females and 4-6 males. Randomize their genes.
Lifespan:
Baby: 2 day
Child: 3 days
Teenager: 12 days
Adult: 53 days
Elder: 8 days at the end of adult lifespan, from day 62 onward (explained below)
Set damage multipliers to 3X hunger, 2X environmental damage, 3X predator damage, 2X healing
Basic rules:
This challenge is based upon the roles of nicheling. Most the time a nicheling cannot do something outside the perview of their role.
The tribe is ruled by a council made up of each of the head nichelings for the roles. For instance, the head breeding female, the head food collector, the head warrior, etc. If the council cannot agree on a course of action, the council will vote. You can roll dice/randomize the outcome, or for a more story-based playthrough you can have your head nichelings vote in ways that make sense with their personality.
Head nichelings are chosen based on experience (how long they've been alive/in that role), skill (in the relevant skill for that role), and dedication/success (how many berries they've picked, bearyena they've killed, etc, whatever makes sense for that role). If a nicheling has all three or even two over their fellows in that role they are the obvious choice and are automatically chosen. Should there be some sort of tie, the council decides. Head nichelings keep their status until they die, retire, or are exiled, regardless of whether a more suitable nicheling of their role is around.
At least 2 council members have to agree for a wanderer to join.
Nichelings may have both primary and secondary roles to make this a bit easier. Their middle gem will display their secondary role, which will allow them to perform the functions of that role as well. They can't be the head nicheling of their secondary role. Only of their primary.
Non-breeding females can only have one child in their life. If it is a rogue's baby, too bad. If this rule is broken, the council will decide whether the child will be killed or banished.
Nichelings can only change their role(s) once in their life. They can also switch around primary and secondary roles once.
All heads are set to alpha, unless they wish to not eat food that turn in order to give food to others for story reasons. Most other nichelings you can change rank in order to distribute food as you see fit.
You may need custom gem colors for this.
Roles:
Breeding Female:
This is considered one of the most important of the roles. Their job is to have children for the continuation of the tribe. They also raise and watch the children.
The area around the breeding female's nest is considered a nursery. Nurseries are usually at least a 3 by 3 hex area. The nursery is considered the property of the female that founded it (first used/built the nest). She may want it all to herself, or may choose to let other females build nests there or borrow her own.
If there are any disputes between the breeding females (and any other females with/expecting children) the head breeding female settles it.
Breeding females may collect from any food sources within the nursery area, but not from any outside. They also may clear grass within their nursery, but not outside.
Breeding females may have as many children as they choose until they become elders. Then they may continue to watch over and take care of children, but can no longer have any themself.
Breeding females may only attack predators that are threatening the children. And any teens within their nursery.
This role has to be set manually.
Gem color: Regular: pink Head: purple
Skill (for purposes of head selection): Fertility
Food collector:
This role's job is to collect food. They are the only role that can collect berries or other fruits. They are (mostly) the only ones who can perform the collection action. They can also dig up roots, crack nuts and clams, collect insects, hunt rabbits and other passive animals, fish, and attack green carnivorous plants. Pretty much anything food related that doesn't relate to fighting anything dangerous.
Many food collectors may spend most of their life at an outpost (an area of food producing plants or other sources within the territory, connected to nurseries and other territory areas by a path of cleared grass). Most food gatherers do not venture beyond the territory.
For a food gatherer to venture beyond the territory they must be accompanied by two explorers or an explorer and a sentry. Or have explorer as their secondary role. They will likely only do this in search of a food source, probably one already discovered.
Whenever an adult who hasn't yet gotten a role performs the collect action on anything other than meat, the nicheling is automatically set to a food gatherer on either their primary or secondary role.
Gem color: regular: green head: dark green
Explorer:
An explorer's job is to go beyond the confines of the territory to find new resources. Explorers find new resources and either expand the territory and create paths to them, or report their findings and try and get others to come with them to make said resources used by the tribe.
Explorers can clear grass, though they prefer not to if they don't have to. They may clear grass to make paths to things they find, or to uncover said things to make them easy to find later. But keeping the camp tidy is boring, so they don't tend to do that.
Explorers can also hunt creatures they come across on their journey. And may they their hand at some fishing. They might even try and eat something they've never seen before to see if it's safe. But they can't collect berries or other mundane resources. Once an explorer has run into something before, they generally lose interest and won't collect it again.
Explorers are allowed to hunt both passive and non-passive creatures, but won't tangle with a bearyena, balance bear, or ape.
Any adult nicheling who ventures beyond the confines of the territory will be set to explorer in primary or secondary role.
Gem colors: regular: white head: grey
Skill: speed
Warrior:
A warrior's job is to protect the tribe from any and all threats. Warriors will fight any bearyena, ram fox, ape, rogue, unwanted wanderer, and carnivorous plant within the tribe's territory.
Warriors are allowed to use the attack action at any time. Though they are not ever allowed to use the collect action. They also are never allowed to clear grass. They can, however, attack bushes and thorns.
They cannot hunt small passive animals such as rabbils, dodomingos, stagmoles, and fish. But they can hunt bearyena and bigger game animals (such as walrus deer and ram foxes) if the tribe gets desperate. Unless the tribe is low on food, they will stick to guarding the territory from any threats.
Warriors will be the ones to chase of rogues and wanderers, nobody else. They also will make up the bulk of the fighting force in case of war with another tribe (storywise, unless you're on Home Island lol). They will be the ones to perform any executions or lead any banished creatures out of the territory, as ordered by the council.
Any adult nicheling without a role will be assigned to warrior if they attack a bearyena or other threat.
Gem colors: regular: orange head: red
Healer:
This nicheling's job is to heal their tribe mates. Their tasks include picking off leeches, licking bleeding wounds, eating sleeping sickness bug swarms, guiding nichelings to healing fruits, and, storywise, helping with births and trying to cure sick nichelings.
The head healer cannot have a secondary role. The head healer is the one who has been at it the longest, unless another candidate has either bat head or purrface.
If your tribe doesn't have at least one healer, healing fruits cannot be used.
Healers and food gatherers are the only ones who can pull out leaches. Healers can lick the wounds of any nicheling. If there is no healer nearby, a nicheling closely related to that nicheling (parent, child, or sibling) can also.
You must assign this role manually.
Gem colors: regular: blue head: dark blue
Skill: purr or insect collecting
Sentry:
A sentry's job is to warn the tribe of dangers. Most sentries stay around the edges of the tribe's territory in order to detect threats before they're a problem. Some may also be stationed in nurseries or outposts.
Sentries can't do too much, mainly patrol the territory. They can clear grass around their post in order to pass the time.
Sentries can also help an explorer escort a food gatherer or other nicheling to a resource or new outpost. Sentries also help escort breeding females to a new nursery spot. This is because they can hear and smell potential dangers more than other nichelings.
A sentry may once attack a predator that appears in their face, but then will go warn the tribe after. Sentries report to the warriors of the tribe, specifically the head warrior.
Sentries do not have a head nicheling.
Sentries may often be blind, due to heightened senses.
If there is no sentry in the tribe, you cannot use hearing or smelling view.
You must assign this role manually.
Gem color: yellow
Skill: smelling and hearing
Teenagers:
Teenagers can have roles, but it is better not to set them yet. Teens are experimenting, which means they can do anything and don't have to be confined by any particular role.
They don't have any special abilities of the roles, but can perform any action.
Gem color: aqua (blue-green)
Unassigned nichelings:
They can't do much of anything. They may gain a role by doing a certain action. Or they may be assigned one by the council (you). You can role dice for roles for more challenge, or assign them based on the needs of your tribe.
Unassigned nichelings may breed for their one child allowed. They may move. They may not collect, attack, or clear anything. They have no special roles.
Gem color: aqua (blue-green)
Elders:
When a nicheling is 62 days old, they become an elder. Elders cannot breed.
Most elders retire from their roles and stay in nurseries or other places secure in the territory. But in case they want to keep going there are additional rules:
Elder warriors can only attack threats once a turn (one action point). Elder breeding females watch children. Elder sentries can no longer escort, and don't patrol the territory, but may keep their post if they prefer. Elder food gatherers can gather food within nurseries and outposts if another nicheling is there with them, but can't found new outposts or collect food out of such places. Elder explorers can clear grass and make paths, but not much else. Elder healers can continue assisting their tribemates by picking leeches and licking wounds, but don't count toward the healing plant rule anymore.
Elders lose their secondary role, as elder becomes their primary role and their primary becomes their secondary.

Omegas:
Omegas are slaves of the tribe. Perhaps they were captured from another tribe, or rogue children, or wanderers not allowed to join on the same footing as native-born members, or even those who are being punished for a breaking of tribe law.
However they got there, it's not a pleasant role to have. They are ordered around by any tribe member, especially the heads of the roles. They must do whatever the council decides.
They are given odd tasks, like clearing grass, picking berries from cactuses, getting eaten by carnivorous plants, etc. Their life is unpleasant, and they do whatever the free nichelings don't want to.
Though they may be sacrificed to bearyena, they often will not be allowed to fight one or lead it away from the tribe because they may take the chance to run away.
Omegas can do pretty much any action, but they cannot make nests. They can repair them, and often do so. They also cannot venture beyond the territory without a sentry, a warrior, and an explorer escorting them. Omegas cannot eat healing fruits unless nobody else needs it more and the head healer and the nicheling in charge of the omega agrees.
Generally, the council assigns a tribe member to be in charge of the omega. To keep an eye on them and direct them on a day to day basis. That tribe member has to near the omega most the time.
Omegas die early at 60 days because of the grueling life they lead. They never become elders. Even if they are not yet 60 days old, if they have 5 days left on their lifespan they will die.
Omegas cannot have children. Omegas cannot be set to any other rank other than omega, so always eat last.
For an omega to become a regular tribe member, the whole council unanimously must agree, along with the tribe member in charge of them. Though if they disagree with the council, three other tribe members may vouch for the omega in order for them to be freed.

Raelana finds a wanderer with a beak! We invite her in.
And we breed Komi and Kudukpri to try and get their genes in the mix.
Tare is off exploring on her own when she stumbles upon a carnivorous plant. She can't smell whether it is dangerous or not because of her gilled shark-head. But because of her adventurous spirit and determination to help her tribe, she proceeds toward it anyway. And it turns out the plant was in it's non-dangerous phase! So she cracks it open to reveal the food inside.
Kirdukta discovers a stump and a healing plant.
Donro volunteers to be eaten by the carnivorous plant so that it can be defeated. His brother Nota and Duknota finish it off in just a couple turns. Now Komi can use the nest that is next to it.

"Ok, new shadow" said the spirit. Guiding...the shadow mentioned them. I guess we really are here, where we were going to. The swamp.

He slowly got to his feet. There was an excruciating pain in his neck. What!? Where am I?
It was foggy. He looked around and saw other nichelings in the distance. Don't trust anyone. The words rang in his head. He went in the other direction.
"What friend?" asked the spirit, confused again. 'Friend' was a word they hadn't yet remembered.

Again, despite it having been almost obvious from the beginning, he found himself jealous of this spirit's recovery speed. He'd hoped for someone who could share his experiences. He knew this was wrong to wish for and that he should be happy for the them. He'd be a terrible person for hoping that someone had had to go through the same things he did. He shouldn't wish his fate on anyone. And besides, plenty of spirits had gone through what he did. It was just that none of them had made it back. There were others that had it worse and he should do try his best to prevent more suffering.
His thoughts were interrupted when he noticed another figure out the corner of his eye. One of the newcomers he'd met earlier?

She then noticed other nichelings nearby (@YourLocalStranger @Liljatonttu). She approached them slowly.
The spirit saw the look in the shadow's lights. Something was unnerving about it.
"I...uh...see." they said uncomfortably, "So I will think of more things? More memories? Where do these things come from? How can I picture them if they aren't in this place?"

As Fangs waited for them to finish, he looked around. The swamp was a lot closer now, he could see the outlines of the few old trees through the mist, which was sort of beginning to clear. There was no sign of the two newly arrived spirits from earlier and he hoped they were together.
The spirit had gotten lost in their thoughts, but once they were done thinking they said "What did you stop for? Are we there?"

"That...that..." the spirit paused, thinking back on the way the shadow with the swimming tail had talked about babies. How it had them, that look in its lights. But though it stirred something in the spirit, it just didn't know.
