  1. Okay so I decided to try again! I decided to go easy on myself and start on the Peaceful Meadow. The Grass Mingle was infested with Rogue MalesĀ šŸ˜…Ā This time I'm writing a log to develop an in depth story.Ā My tribe can escape to a grassland in the east.

    20190311182412_1.thumb.jpg.8bbe8b8be977b1b22cfb5700bc9111ca.jpg

My new starting pair are pretty! The female is Castana and the male is Maron. Maron is the leader and as long as he's alive, the tribe can have 15 members.Ā

Castana, being raised on the outskirts of her old tribe, has poor social skills and may appear abrasive to some. But she is a diligent gatherer with a generous heart. Maron, a skilled hunter, is greatful to have met someone as dedicated to their craft as he. I left her first mutation slot open and the gods assigned her no horn.

Maron is from a tribe of hunters and makes no secret of it. One of the most promising hunters in his previous tribe, he has a rather inflated sense of self, much to Castanaā€™s disdain. However, he is loyal and hard-working, traits that Castana values a lot. However, his family carries a dark secret that may rear its head in the future. I assigned him runner leg and the gods assigned him hemophilia.

Castana and Maron stumble across a nest on their. Although Castana wants to settle down by an oak tree, Maron tells her that the nearest tree is a long way away. After some bickering, Castana decides that it will do for now and prepares to have her first child.

    20190311183838_1.thumb.jpg.12a403a8c4bbb8057c3603dc67db6090.jpg

With his mate occupied, Maron decides to set off and do some hunting. Although he is loud and extroverted around his loved ones, he knows that stealth is the best way to catch the alert rabbils that wander the grasslands.

    20190311184035_1.thumb.jpg.02b4f1e6b0df529a5fb47c43fd0cce2e.jpg

Maron catches a rabbil and proudly brings the meat back to his new kit. Or kits in this case. Castana has given birth to twins with some interesting features. The small female has a bill, suited for digging up worms in the sand. The male has antlers and a strange, finned body built for swimming. Maron is surprised by his new children, but proud, nonetheless. Castana looks up at the rain clouds, deciding that the water gods had a role in this. She names the female Pelke and the male Pluvo.

When the twins are able to take their first steps, Castana rather roughly tells them not to play under the palm tree that overlooks the nest. She convinces Maron to stay close to the nest and do some domestic chores for the day.

    20190311185717_1.thumb.jpg.0502aa1f1c64957c832a2b90d6c7eb76.jpg

Maron gets distracted and hears a mole in the distance. Castana, pregnant once more, gulps down some berries while she watches over her rowdy children. She never realised that having a legacy would be such hard work. Maron catches the mole, looking forward to hunting with his children one day.

    20190311185944_1.thumb.jpg.4546d5a796886c2a2a3d1a8f8de0aa5e.jpg

Another child with the water body is born, named Lutra after her otter coloured coat. Much to Maronā€™s disappointment, his growing twins seem to be more interested in the sea than hunting with him and to see another kit with the water body only seems to make him sadder. Castana canā€™t help but wonder if the gods are guidingĀ their familyĀ down a specific path.

    20190311190418_1.thumb.jpg.984fc5182cd18f747f916fae624d1bc5.jpg

Castana, now saddled with three young children to care for, is silently hoping that her next child will be her last. She has come to love Maron but he seems to want as many children as a nicheling could possibly bare. Meanwhile, Pluvo takes his first excited steps into the sea. As her brother playfully splashes about in the waves, Pelke, who canā€™t breathe underwater herself, canā€™t help but feel a little bit jealous.

    20190311191148_1.thumb.jpg.325eaf16eec11f9680a2665cdcc07def.jpg

The rains have arrived and Castana calls Pelke up to help gather the latest harvest while she tends to the young Lutra. Pelke, knowing what her mother can be like when sheā€™s mad,Ā does as sheā€™s told. Meanwhile, Pluvo has noticed how sad his father looks and decides to catch some fish to bring as a gift.

    20190311191520_1.thumb.jpg.6331c4231e97c721446b68430d033c00.jpg

Another water breathing child is born. She looks just like Lutra except with her fatherā€™s short snout. Castana names her Kisa. Maron lets his frustrated thoughts stew over todayā€™s harvest. He decides that settling down by the coast must be having an effect on his kits and plans to convince Castana to move further inland in the morning. Pelke, now done with her harvest, is permitted to go play by Castana. Pluvo tells Pelke of his idea to bring his father fish and Pelke agrees to tag along.

  2. Cool! I had a similar idea for a savannah prey animal but since the savannah biome tends to favour smaller and faster creatures than the mountains, I was going to make a weaker but faster creature. Would the OPĀ be okay if I posted my ideaĀ suggestion forum?Ā ā˜ŗļø

  3. Ever since watching Seri's Whims of Fate playthrough, I always wanted to do a blind gene challenge but never got around to doing it. But now that it's possible to do a blind gene sandbox in the new update (loving it so far!), I thought I'd finally give it a try! So here are the rules I set for myself...

    1. Tribe size must be limited to a number between 2 and 30. This limit changes with the death of a leader.

    2. I can assign a creature one mutation of my choice but the other one must be assigned by the random mutation generatorĀ (or the gods I suppose!).

    3. Breeding with direct siblings is forbidden.

    4. I must roll a dice to see which island I can escape to.Ā

For this challenge, I have expanded my creatures childhoods (baby, child, and teen) to 11 days and their adulthoods to 45 days, giving me plenty of time to develop stories. Pregnancy is extended to 2 days.

    20190310140523_1.thumb.jpg.a4fe0733f82c30f56b53c28967f3bcd1.jpg

We start on the Grass Mingle Island. Our tribe limit is 14 and we can escape to a jungle in the east.

My starting pair are named Red and Blue after their striking coats. Red is the more dominant one, a strong but big-hearted nicheling from a tribe of warriors and hunters. She left her tribe because she felt insecure about her webbed hind legs, which slowed her down during hunting. She is assigned normal hind legs by me and brown pattern by the gods.

Blue is in many ways the opposite of his mate. He is a laidback nicheling who attracted Red with his quirky sense of humour. His ideal day is spent resting next to a berry bush, preferably a poison one. I left his first slot open and the gods assigned no-pattern to his second slot.

    20190310141448_1.thumb.jpg.e089d10f9064f68b44d4f1d01b7a42ec.jpg

This island has an abundance of berry bushes, the ideal place for any budding family to settle down by.

    20190310141607_1.thumb.jpg.c295e6f7ca66a4107edede22b25fde65.jpg

Their first daughter, Vera, is an ideal mix of both of her parents. Still in their honeymoon phase, Red is pregnant with her second child almost imediately.

    20190310141922_1.thumb.jpg.386ae16d853086fe1a27bd5dbd163f2a.jpg

    20190310142110_1.thumb.jpg.9fb52af87f247e3f976eae7d2a95d7ab.jpg

Vera is eager to explore the grasses. Blue is more than willing to let her do so, although Red insists that her daughter stays within their line of sight.

    20190310142240_1.thumb.jpg.e20b447147d2336dd77f90b006eac834.jpg

Vera learns all too soon why you never go exploring alone. Banding together, Red, Blue and Vera defend Flamingo and the newborn twins (Fandango and Purple) and defeat the bearyena, who dies of poison while biting Vera. After tending to her daughter's wound, Red reminds Vera to always travel with a strong companion while she's out scouting.

    20190310142446_1.thumb.jpg.e73c96f746f4561c850253e0e94092a1.jpg

Lucky for Vera, she finds a companion very quickly.Ā The terrified young female introduces herself as Sirasi, revealing that her lone mother had been killed by a bearyena. Accepted by this band of castaways, she and Vera become fast friends.

    20190310142616_1.thumb.jpg.77e529e8a7350f853e7d5c3bbc945c5e.jpg

This little guy is named Taffy.

    20190310142713_1.thumb.jpg.484f4d2b6b46934e1564984d3cf2ad7d.jpg

Yet another Bearyena storms the camp. Red's natural instinct to protect her children kicks in but she feels another creature's breath down her neck. A defender bear. Her previous tribe had run into a lot of trouble with these bears, who seemed to hate violence no matter the reason or the creature commiting it. Blue, without a single point of attack to his name, urges his children to run. Red looks down at baby Taffy, who is barely able to walk. She must make her first tough decision as a leader. Run and risk leaving Taffy to the mercy of the bearyena or defend her children from the bearyena and risk the defender bear's wrath.Ā

She prays to the gods for guidance. In other words, you get to decide what I do next!

Sage and Hawthorn's child. She's tough and she has the scorpion tail but that eyesight...

RIP,Ā toxic queen. The food suppliesĀ are getting dangerously lowĀ so Ginger gathers the poison berries.

The tribeĀ finds an orphan with some cool water genes and recessive bird beak in the reeds. Lavender adoptsĀ her when they have the food to spare.

RIP, Grove. So sad he never got to have children of his own but he lived a full and interesting life nonetheless. And he brought some much needed rain!

Fennel has eyes for Vale but working up the nerve to confess his feelings, especially as an omega, is turning out to be pretty hard.

    20190110173018_1.thumb.jpg.cf7866f16d6e8fd218279883796a73a0.jpg

Lavender takes on HawthornĀ as her first mate. It's weird but this is niche. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

    20190110173043_1.thumb.jpg.16fc2b36ac2b9c0aefd42ed709da6249.jpg

Their first child is an albino scorpion tail with a nimble finger. Basically everything I could ever ask for.

    20190110173305_1.thumb.jpg.545f3858ad68db074b2886b3e4c8f30a.jpg

Fennel finally confesses his feelings and with the bounty the rain has brought, Lavender allows her tribemates to start families of their own.

Dahlia tries to track down a wanderer in the swamps. She's turning out to be very shy. Who can blame her though? Dahlia does look pretty intimidating with those double claws and her scorpion tail.

Before the tribe can even name today's newborns, a bearyena decides to ruin Ginger's day. Luckily Tulip andĀ Dahlia, our resident bearyena eater,Ā makeĀ it over in time.

Sage chooses Orchard as her mate and the two become the tribe's new breeding pair.

    20190109105656_1.thumb.jpg.835e664eb6eae722b823b5fc71fbda26.jpg

Their first child is Violet. She has the toxic body but she is not much use for anything other than fishing so she will become an omega when she is fully grown.

    20190109110104_1.thumb.jpg.1ba349f3b36eddaad3fdd5711fb5f21c.jpg

Meanwhile, Ash and Grove fend off a bearyena who takes a swipe at Grove in the process.

Vale is finding plentiful lands off in the distance. Maybe if the tribe finds enough food, she'll be able to have children of her own one day...

    20190109105914_1.thumb.jpg.541abe387236e6153ccbfb1b91539ca3.jpg

Sage and Orchard's second child is Ginger. Although she doesn't have the toxic body, she has that all too important digging paw...

    20190109110412_1.thumb.jpg.c1457202feacf48a8070bed742fd7e0d.jpg

...But amidst the celebrations of a second child, it turns out the bearyena Ash had killed was not alone. A second predator looms dangerously close to camp. Sadly, both of the tribe's alphas are injured protecting their children.

    20190109110508_1.thumb.jpg.fc549fb5b8e2c74c9f90c0849ca91426.jpg

Another wanderer is found hanging out near the outskirts. He's pretty but he has no useful traits or new immunities so the tribe hasĀ to pass him up.

    20190109110649_1.thumb.jpg.2e893c94cfcf0c5ca3ae2bbd07bbedeb.jpg

At last, a child with the toxic body and a way of gathering the poison berries is born! With her pretty little peacock tail, LavenderĀ is Sage's favourite child.

    20190109111133_1.thumb.jpg.94d9e688bcdac48cf3d8cfef9f289e3f.jpg

RIP Ash, one of our most bold explorers. Grove, who had developed a close bond with his uncle, lays his remains to rest.

Sage and Orchard have their first son. Sadly, he will likely become an omega like his sister Violet.

    20190109111624_1.thumb.jpg.e810dd76a29e5682b4e50b0f25b8feef.jpg

The tribe invites a new wanderer. He has new immunity genes and recessive scorpion tail so Sage plans to breed him one day, if not with her then with one of her daughters.

    20190109111907_1.thumb.jpg.471de76ca577ba4a11179e4576ad62ba.jpg

Orchard's final daughter is Tulip. She can collect the berries and she's pretty enough but she's not considered as beautifulĀ as Lavender.

    20190109112347_1.thumb.jpg.8157134fa040bd2db2b1037d9c881576.jpg

Meanwhile, Violet finds a gorgeous poison fanged wanderer named Pine. However, the arrival takes its toll on the tribe and old aunt Rose is forced to gather poison berries. RIP.

Oz is my god of green Toxic Body, because he has green toxic body and showed up along with another green toxic bodied creature, and he also has platypus beak. Maybe his female form is called Zelena? (that was the name of the other toxic-bodied creature found with him)

Also Vale and Cypress and Grove are so pretty eee

Oz must have heard our plea for that precious toxic body!

  7. My Swampy Hill adventures continue.

Perhaps against their better judgement, Briar and Alder have another child. Because of the hard times the tribe come upon, he is relegated to exploringthe oter edges and poison berry picking.20190107100443_1.thumb.jpg.766af10f9795db2f71b0782a6f882953.jpg

The tribe has no choice but to assign alphas and omegas. Alphas are creatures with blue gems in the middle and are primarily breeding creatures.Ā They always have useful genes such as wings and toxic genes and usually become omegas when they are done breeding. Useful gatherers with the potential to breed are all betas and they have all green gems.Ā Omegas are non-breeders with no particularly useful genes. Their job is to explore and to pick poison berries when food supplies dwindle. Not only rain but Robin becomes an omega because she has a genetic backup in the form of her identical twin.

The tribe finds yet another wanderer in the grass. He doesn't really bring anything to the table genetically and he seems a bit odd so the tribe decide to leave him alone.

Alder and Briar's first grandchild is born, unfortunately inheriting his father's nimble fingers instead of his wing.

Meanwhile, a dangerous blessing of food appears across the river.

The much needed rain comes, bringing the bug swarms and the sleeping sickness to the tribe for the first time. Ash has been hit particularly hard.

Meanwhile, twins Robin and Rose are born but still no double wings. And to make matters worse, it is their sickly father's last day. In a final of good for the tribe, Fen scoops up as many poison berries as his nimble fingers can carry.

Things are starting to get pretty interesting. I may have to think about assigning alphas and omegas soon.

  9. Today I begin my mission to survive on the Swampy Hill for as long as possible. Thanks @BrokenshockĀ for picking me.

    20190107082310_1.thumb.jpg.e8a75ab37d3d77fe0c5c6c41fab5cb38.jpg

Here is my starting pair, Briar and Alder. They're definitely not swamp creatures. I looked in their genetics and there wasn't a single toxic genetic to be found so my theory is that they are grassland creatures, stranded on this strange and dark island. They do the sensible thing and head along the shore to the nearest patch of grassland. Briar catches some fish and Alder picks up a leech. Food is food after all.

On day 2, crabbit tag teaming ensues!

    20190107083029_1.thumb.jpg.ba20d4a736602f79932e011d3b41d7f8.jpg

There seems to be a lot of shells on these shores. Luckily, both Briar and Alder have recessive cracker jaw. Maybe if they're lucky the nicheling godsĀ will answer their pleas!

    20190107083129_1.thumb.jpg.eb7843dd02aff7692f712d52e6b2ab98.jpg

Alder has proven himself to be a good mate and has found a rabbil burrow and a permanant nest...

    20190107083204_1.thumb.jpg.87b4c5dcd658035ef0c2161983b5fe16.jpg

And a non-poisonous berry bush at last! Briar couldn't have asked for a better spot to start a family.

    20190107083349_1.thumb.jpg.ab03155c97a1f045f103f37e4e36a96c.jpg

But peace never lasts forever. Luckily, their claws made short work of the bearyena.

    20190107083434_1.thumb.jpg.375c9b8c9f39e7d5a416a623906b11d7.jpg

Little do the new couple know, there is someoneĀ hiding in the tall grass...

    20190107083711_1.thumb.jpg.9ac3d81a56da05d15feb00d3db457aa7.jpg

Meet Fen. Sadly, he was abandoned by his feathered family thanks to his sickness and inability to fly. But perhaps he knows a thing or two about reaching those juicy looking snails in the swamp trees...

    20190107083539_1.thumb.jpg.83a4f3d95796b0a6ac1bb92c08c22ee0.jpg

And before I forgot, this is Alder and Briar's first baby Cypress. With that fishing skill, perhaps she could make use of the stream that cuts through the territory.

So far so good. I think my budding new family has a decent chance of surviving here!

IĀ loveĀ thisĀ idea,Ā butĀ iĀ think it should be longer and hairier so it looks a bit moreĀ like a howler monkey

I based the original design on a marmoset because marmoset are adorable as heck!

But I may upload a howler monkey-esque design to see what people like the bestĀ šŸ™‚

  11. This is very much linked to the suggestion of climbing or at least being in the treetops or on a stump, but since so many people have suggested climbing tails and climbing limbs, I decided not to make another suggestion surrounding that. So here's the idea. I think the tops of those huge jungle trees could easily support a few nesting sites. This is where the new headĀ comes in.Ā

    Howler Head

    • 1+ collecting
    • 2+ smelling
    • 1+ loud call

The principal of loud callĀ is similar to strong voice in some ways but different in others. Loud call can only be used on a high place, such as a stump or a tree. It can scare away predators (including apes!) and rogue males within a certain range of tiles so you can safely descend from the trees to gather food (just make sure you get back up there fast!) and it has a higher chance of attracting wanderers than the regular call.

How would ranks work in this challenge? Like how would you know what creatures would be marked as omega or something? I suppose you could pick your omegas and betas and stuff, but say you could keep a rouge born child to be omega?

The ranking is totally up to the player but i find that I rank nichelings who bring in the least food as omegas.

  13. I'm back! And after a long absence, I came up with my own way to keep my Niche playthroughs fresh; a challenge based on the social structure of wolves. I know that this sort of challenge has already been done before but here is my take on it. Please let me know if you try it and if you like it, please give me ideas for more animal based challenges. I am thinking of making rules for a lion challenge and a hyena challenge too.

    Rules

    • Can be done on any island but I perfer starting in snowy biomes because of their abundance of prey and the challenge they present.
    • Your starting male and female are your first breeding pair. Mark them both as alphas. As long as they are alive, they are the only nichelings in their pack allowed to breed.
    • When a nicheling gains all three of their gems, they can stay in their natal pack or disperse at any time.
    • But be aware that when a nicheling leaves its natal pack, that it can never return.
    • Dispersal nichelings can either start new packs or live as lone nichelings. Give any new packĀ a new gemstone colour combinationĀ and give lone nichelingsĀ their own unique combination too.
    • Only accept wanderers with the ability to hunt.
    • Children born to rogue males must leave their natal packs when they gain three gems.
    • If there are no nichelings suitable to succeed the breeding pair when they die, the pack has officially died out and any remaining nichelings must disperse.

I'll probably be posting this onto the Niche Challenge steam group tooĀ šŸ™‚
