Pattern-consumed Nicheling

So my leaders recently had this child(picture attached) and at first, I thought he was grey-no-pattern, but after seeing that he quickly flashed orange every time I opened his menu, I realized he actually is completely covered by his mask! I find this super strange as he only has medium pattern density(though huge pattern) and I've never seen this before! Has anyone else found patterns that do this to your nicheling? I kinda wish I could see some orange peeking through, but he's still super cute. ;w;

Update: I can see orange eyelids when he closes his eyes!
