  1. I’ve been working on getting some achievements including the Darwin Award. I’ve read on Steam discussions that you can get it by dying on your starting island which I’ve attempted to do multiple times across multiple dates. Is there anything more I’m supposed to do or is this a bug?

  2. Ah, your pets are so cute! Here are my pets (from left to right-ish):

Sunny the bichon frise, Dedenne the hamster (rest her soul, she died last night), Fall the guinea pig, Frosty the New Zealand white rabbit, Fade the Netherland dwarf rabbit, and Peanut the Flemish giant rabbit

And I also have a fish tank and I couldn't find any current pictures of it, so maybe I'll upload a picture of it later.

  3. So, I've recently been trying to get the Youtuber achievements and today, I finally got what I thought what would be the "Seers of the Sea" Achievement with these creatures:

Correct me if I missed anything for the achievement, but I didn't receive anything.

  4. So, gem colors are great but are kinda limiting with just five colors. This isn't the biggest change or the most important but I think it'd be cool and nice to have. This idea is also incorporated with another idea here:

So to do it, the home screen would look like so:updatedhomescreenforbreedmode.thumb.png.efb4b7bbc800dfe8b236feaaea52ab8b.pngupdatedhomescreenforgemcolors.thumb.png.4f7075ba9d3bae9781964e8b85f1ebdf.png

And upon opening it you get a screen like so:gemcolorformat.thumb.png.a0c7578e3145b474226af5da18ae013e.pnggemcolorcycle.thumb.png.56410cc49deefa76fd80c8e93c97272d.png

    and to explain it:gemcolorformattutorial.thumb.png.2c8b32f36326aaad778a13a9c831ba3f.pnggemcolorcycletutorial.thumb.png.6b00fe701c65d53283af34ddf8227d9c.png

  5. Alright, so I've seen some suggests asking for some type of creature creator/demo mode or whatever. I have been working on this for a while and I thought I'd make a new post since there's a lot more than just "A demo mode". This is gonna be mostly made up of pictures from what I call "Tutorial Mode" and I'll leave a link to a page with pictures without the text from tutorial mode.

So first you can access this mode from the home screen like so:

    updatedhomescreenforbreedmode.thumb.png.51d02f92478243aaf84dd14c5780adcd.pngupdatedhomescreenforbreedmode1.thumb.png.80ccfcc7fac50cda18cde767105f8cfa.png

And then you would start at the creature creator (and to turn on tutorial mode you do this first (tutorial mode can be either be functional just with the yellow text or an example that goes away after you click)):

    breedmodemenu3.thumb.png.2742dc051a5819a3cae1ad81695a73bc.pngbreedmodemenuopen3.thumb.png.f90229f17d265a72d4ff87724daea165.png

    breedmodecreaturecreatortutorial1.thumb.png.a93099d2687a504879d17bfa259aed1f.png

Which can take you to either the creature list or the select mate screens which look like (also note that the scroll on the right on all screens is not accurate, and is just there to display its existence):breedarchivecreaturelisttutorial.thumb.png.87feb0a6b6bf3822eb0307a7c76de4c5.pngbreedarchiveselectmatetutorial.thumb.png.fb0db83853e5aad23231cb992c6c7d97.png

(Where you can import creatures from save files like this:

    updatedfamilytree.thumb.png.504fb206c1a1500a6ca07055df69c41c.png)

And confirming a breed brings you to the offspring list which is:

    breedarchiveoffspringlisttutorial1.thumb.png.0080b6bc7316b53f33e51064efb69260.png

Where there are trait statistics and custom filters (list of traits made by @Aysling here: https://strayfawnstudio.com/community/index.php?/topic/626-nicheling-sort-filter-and-select/&page=0#comment-2030) :

Or you can go to the punnett square:

    breedmodetutorialmode.thumb.png.952419f8e90c7bd1308091100a9ad745.png

And from anything outside of the creature lists, you can go to the gem colors (which you can find individually here: https://strayfawnstudio.com/community/index.php?/topic/646-customizable-and-programmable-gem-colors/)breedmodegemcolorselecttutorial1.thumb.png.72510d8d6e628c7eb0cd69b6f7105052.png

And the color cycle looks like this:

    breedmodegemcolorcycletutorial.thumb.png.5a2006e88c36c0eaf7a3c5ce68732417.png

And after all of that, you could use the creatures you used to start in sandbox mode like this:

    (Picture in production)

So yea, that's all of it. Please let me know of any mistakes I might have made since this was a lot or of any logical inconsistencies. If you want to see the pictures without the text from tutorial mode, you can go to this link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/16dVKParfTHqHpSsuPD_UA_6cozEJ94_4Wtxpff6lIsE/edit?usp=sharing

  6. This is a really great idea! Particularly the different types of coverings such as fur, feathers, and scales. I feel like they would work well as just different body types though since they a “Toxic body + Feathers” creature doesn’t make a mess out of traits and such. That doesn’t mean there can’t be something like a “Big feathered body” or a “Lean feathered body” that can be more modified to the traits that it has without being a big mess. As for fur lengths, I feel like that’s already pretty well covered by the different bodies from the big body to the lean body.

  7. So some of the wildlife in Niche appears to be a mix between two creatures (Rabbils, Dodomingos, Bearyenas) and so I had a few questions about that.

    1. Why are some creatures mixtures?

    2. What are the flamingo aspects of Dodomingos?

    3. Are Crabbits, Razoranhas, and/or Bluebirds apart of this group? And if so, of what?

Thanks for taking the time to read and respond!

  8. Hi! I've always wanted more life to be in the sea so this is the Glauctapus. A mix between a blue sea slug (glaucus atlanticus) and an octopus, more details seen in the picture.

    Glauctapus.thumb.png.f5d491cd0e60e894f7dd5dd777c40c9c.png

    -1 Attack

    - 3 Swimming

    - 1 Speed (only on beach, max 2 turns)

    - 3 Sight

    - 4 Fishing

    - Poisonous

    - Lifespan - 20 days

    - Neutral unless

    • attacks if
      • attacked
      • is competing for food (sees you take its food)
      • a leach is attached to it (uncommon, remove leach to tame)
    • goes towards if
      • creature has toxic body

    - Eats all types of fish as well as kelp

    - Can be found in all biomes with water and adaptation appearances (stinger tentacles are always blue)

    - Big body, medium body, armored body = latches onto creature for 2 turns, will do 1 attack for  each action performed by creature, can be detached by attacking with another creature with 3 damage but will also poison the helping creature

And I am well aware that breeding with this entity is not biologically realistic but this is Niche and why not, here are the hybrid genes:

    - Short-sighted eyes

    - Water body/Toxic body

    - Webbed hindlegs

    - Red/Yellow fur

    - No pattern

    - Stinger Tentacle

    • Poisonous
    • Poison resistance
    • Remove leaches alone
    • 1 Swimming (4 if both paws)
    • Always slightly blue or vibrant in color

    - Octo Head

    • 2 Camo in any biome
    • 2 Underwater smelling
    • Underwater breathing
    • Color changes slightly depending on biome

    -Internal Ears

    • 5 Underwater hearing -
    • 2 Hearing (land)

  9. Alright, so first I've got an entity idea:

Glaucoctopus (or some other name, I didn't really have one)

-a mixture between a blue sea slug and an octopus, more specifically, an octopus head with blue sea slug stingers as tentacles as well as blue sea slug antennae (can have different head shapes and colors to accommodate environment) (stingers always blue) (basic appearance is round orange head with blue antennae + blue stinger tentacles)

-1 attack (if big body, medium body, armored body = latches onto creature for 2 turns, will do 1 attack for each action performed by creature, can be detached by attacking with another creature with 3 damage but will also poison the helping creature) (poisonous)

-3 speed in water, 1 speed on beach (can only be on land for 1 turn)

    -3 sight

    -4 fishing

-neutral creature until attacked, competing for food, creature has toxic body, or leach attached to it (uncommon) (remove leach to tame)

-eats all types of fish as well as kelp

-can be found in all environments with different adaptation appearances

-if can be bred with, hybrid genes would be:

-internal ears: 5 hearing underwater, 2 on land

      -short-sighted eyes

-gills/octo head: 2 camo in any environment, 2 underwater smelling, underwater breathing

      -water body/toxic body

-stinger tentacle: poisonous, can remove leaches alone, 1 swimming (4 swimming if both paws)

      -webbed hind legs

      -red/yellow fur

      -spots pattern

Some game modes I had in mind were:

    Objective/Arcade Mode:

The game gives you tasks to complete with genes which could be either continuous or one-offs

ex: have only yellow eyes in your pack

-one would have the ability to customize what types of challenges, time limits, predators, disease, etc.

-one could also have a code to send challenges to friends or to send to Niche players

    Challenge Mode:

Being restricted to only being able to see the phenotypes of creatures

(What the creature shows and not hidden away/recessive genes)

-alternatively, have the ability to hide/show recessive genes through a feature in the family tree

    Breed/Creator Mode:

Being able to create creatures by being able to mess around with genes and breed two creatures to show all possible offspring and by selecting a gene, a Punnett square would pop up showing how the result was obtained (refer to first pic)

-one would be able to save creatures (either the parents or offspring) to appear in a "Saved Creatures" list where creatures could be placed into the "Parents" slots (refer to thrid and fourth pic, the blank spots are where the offspring nichelings would go)

-this would be a great educational tool as well by allowing students to learn how similar/different offspring can look compared to their parents as well as how genes can be passed down

    Educational Mode:

Where game explains how everything works from dominant and recessive genes to natural selection for the use of teachers or presentations

Finally, I have this idea where one would be able to completely customize the gem colors (refer to second pic). One would also be able to program custom colors into either just the number keys or any key so one would be able to quickly and easily change gem colors.
