  1. I think the coconuts should need more cracking than acorns because coconuts are a lot bigger and stronger than acorns and irl would require a lot more strength to get into. It shouldn't be too much of a problem, the only thing that would change would be that nichelings with only 1 nimble fingers gene wouldn't be able to get into them The reason it's unlocked by attacking crabbits is because the gene is based on crabs and the crabbit is a hybrid between a crab and a rabbit. The cracker jaw is already unlocked by cracking open a certain amount of things so it would be better if this was unlocked in a different way Coconut crabs aren't lobsters they're crabs, the clues in the name. Even so, most genes aren't named after a specific animal but are named after something to do with its abilities
  2. I got that they were different, I was just pointing out they're similar and could have the same stats The shorter tail/lack of a tail would mean there would be less body to lose heat from, so it could have cold resistance
  3. I have a similar suggestion here: Would this have any stats? I think +2 cold resistance would work for this as well
  4. Ok so this really bugs me, but it doesn't really make sense that the derp snout adds distasteful appearance. While it's kinda ugly, a predator isn't going to care what it's prey looks like. Plus, derp snout is supposed to be something you don't want in your tribe, but distasteful appearance is kind of useful other changes to existing genes:
  5. You're right, birds are cool I'd love to have some small prey birds, and the pearons are pretty lit too Also nice drawings
  6. I love the idea of a hummingbird beak, but I think rather than making it different for males and females it should give +1 strength (it shouldn't be any more powerful than the ram horns or antlers in my opinion) +1 collecting and +1/2 smelling. It wouldn't be physically different for males and females, so it wouldn't be more powerful on a male just because its a male or better at collecting on a female just because its on a female. Stats should only vary between the sexes if there is sexual dimorphism like with the peafowl tail There's a suggestion here for a hummingbird beak which includes some pretty complicated pollinating abilities. I'd personally rather it just came with collecting, and I love the idea of it giving strength too
  7. While it would make sense for males to be attracted to females who are well camouflaged in their habitat, sexual dichromatism in birds is actually determined by sexual selection In polygamous birds the males mate with as many females as they can and leave the females to raise the young on their own. In these species the males compete amongst themselves for mating rights, and to avoid fighting which can lead to injury they instead have boldly coloured plumages which they use to attract females in courtship displays. Because the females choose their mates they don't face any competition amongst themselves and have dull colours for camouflage. Polyandry, where the female takes multiple mates and leaves the males with the young, also occurs in birds, but is much more common in fish. In polyandrous birds, which includes waders like dotterels and phalaropes, the female shows a bolder colouration. The difference between the males and females in the examples I've given are very slight, but they're there In monogamous birds, where birds only take one mate for the rest of their life, and seasonally monogamous birds, where birds only take one mate each breeding season, both sexes face competition. Usually in these birds both sexes either have bold plumages like parrots or plumages adapted for camouflage like penguins It's rare for female birds to be more brightly coloured than males, but not impossible. Below are a few of the examples I could find. They are, from top to bottom, a grey phalarope female and male, a belted kingfisher female and male (not sure if these guys are polyandrous or what) and an eclectus parrot pair (they're monogamous and while they show sexual dichromatism they are both brightly coloured, neither of them is coloured for camouflage)
  8. I think this is a great idea. Instead of making brown attractive for females though, I would just make red and yellow attractive on both sexes. The peacock tail is only attractive on males because it is only all big and showy on males. Red and yellow look the same on both sexes, there's no reason for them to be more attractive on males just because they're males
  9. Distasteful appearance wouldnt make any sense. We humans might not find them cute, but a predator isn't really going to care how pretty its next meal is
  10. Lol what I wasn't saying that strength wouldn't make sense, I was saying that the stats you suggested were op and it would make most sense to get rid of the strength. I would rather see it added as a specialised gene for fishing, given that kingfishers are largely adapted for it. Not every gene needs a secondary ability I also don't think adding a kookaburra beak as well as a kingfisher beak would be necessary. They look very similar, and there are other beaks better adapted for attack like the hooked beak on birds of prey
  11. The beaks cool but a bit op, it wouldn't need strength as well as fishing and diving. I'd personally prefer to see it added with just smelling and fishing though, the diving is basically just swooping but using the beak instead of feet. There's no reason diving at something headfirst should deal extra damage and swooping down and grabbing something with talons shouldn't. Not to taken with the body either, it sort of seems like youve just slapped some random abilities on it. A kingfishers body isn't particularly specialised for anything Also, Alcedinidae isn't a fancy name for a kingfisher, but rather the scientific family that kingfishers belong to. If you are describing something as either belonging to or being a typical trait of a taxonomic family then it would lose the -ae ending e.g. a kingfisher is an Alcedinid vs kingfishers are part of the Alcedinidae family, antlers are a Cervid trait vs antlers are found in species of the Cervidae family. In the case of the kingfisher body if you're wanting to sound a little more scientific then you would call it an Alcedinid body rather than an Alcedinidae body There's a suggestion for that here
  12. I meant how would the look? They wouldn't really fit on a nicheling
  13. Here's another gene (and pred) with the grapple ability Only nichelings have action points. How would it work on predators and prey like the bearyena?
  14. When tagging other users you should use an @ so that they get a notification that they've been mentioned. Also, not to be pernickity or anything, but the are in my username is a capital A The cuttlefish head can be found in the comments of this post. I love this idea, I think it's really cute There's a post here for different pupil shapes which includes a wavy pupil like the cuttlefish's. Please upvote it guys, I made a post not realising it had already been suggested and it got merged with the original. All the votes were reset There are also a couple of chameleon bodys, which also do the colour change thing. The first one is based on the popular myth that chameleons use colour change to blend into their surroundings, and the second is based on how chameleons actually use their colour change Also a link to the squid body @Goggles-kun mentioned so you don't have to go looking for it yourself
  15. The snapping jaw would be really cool, but it shouldn't have stealth or camouflage. It wouldn't affect how much noise the nicheling makes, and a bright yellow nicheling isn't going to have any better camouflage with a different shape of head I also wouldn't give a turtle shell camouflage, it should be able to come in different colours How would the flippers work given how differently shaped a nicheling is from a turtle?
  16. Looked it up and both sexes of grasshopper are able to chirp, only the female doesn't do it very often and is quieter than the male. Perhaps males could get +2 voice reach and females could just get +1
  17. It's the sound that's attractive so it should add voice reach rather than attractiveness, which is for appearance Also, I don't know about locusts but id assume that like crickets the females have different anatomy and are unable to chirp like the males Also the legs don't make sound so they shouldn't have voice reach/attractiveness.I would also only give 1 speed if they've got an extra ability, otherwise they would be op compared to the other hindlegs
  18. Nimble hind legs and a prehensile tail have both been suggested: There is also a flying fox head here, which would allow a full bat nicheling with decent collecting :
  19. Not sure why this was down voted, I think this would work perfectly
  20. There could maybe be a button somewhere to toggle it on and off
  21. For unlocking the genes it could maybe be something to do with the tar pits, which are great fossil sites. Maybe in each tar pit a wanderer with one of the genes would spawn once you can see the tar pit - this obviously wouldnt work so well of the wanderer was there from the moment you get to the island as they would probably be dead by the time you reached them Another way it could work is you might be able to find nicheling fossils in the tar pits which would look like the skeleton left behind when a nicheling dies only it would clearly show one of the dinosaur genes. You would be able to collect the fossil (possibly using the gathering skill?) and you would unlock whichever gene shows on the fossil I personally prefer the second option, seeing as the first is basically the same as how you get the ice age genes. It also makes more sense seeing as ice age animals can be found preserved in ice (not alive, but still) while dinosaurs can only be found as fossils It should be very hard to get out of tar pits - even mammoths were unable to free themselves before dying of starvation. The volcano could also give out ash and gases and stuff when they errupt. This would make it dark (like when it rains only minus the rain). It would also get colder and cause food to grow back at a slower rate like in the savannah
  22. I mean they kind of have to eat something ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
