Yuli knows who they are because his mother is abusive, and so he'd not sleep in his house and sleep with random wanderers and have them as friends in the night. They'd tell him stories about Ismera, Rako, and all the other Nichelings. Once he ran into Shad, after he had already met Ismera and Rako, and Shad told him all about those Nichelings.
