  10. A quarter-moon had passed and the three WildClan nichelings were still heavily cautious and always had one nicheling stay up while the other two slept to ensure their safety despite GoldenStar’s many promises that they wouldn’t be harmed. Mudpaw, the medicine nicheling apprentice as the clan had found out, had her ceremony to become a full medicine nicheling which the name Mudvine. Mudvine had been trying to become friends with Crowshade though it was debatable if that was making much of any progress due to Crowshade currently being fairly cold due to the whole situation WildClan was in at the moment. And Sparrowtuft’s sneering and mockery whenever his clanmates weren’t looking was not making her feel any more welcome. “Can’t you at least tell me your favorite type of prey?” Mudvine pleaded as Crowshade resisted the urge to hiss at the other nicheling giving yet another attempt at befriending her. “Rabill” She answered only because she hoped that Mudvine would leave her be. “Oh that’s cool! Mine is worms” Mudvine said causing Crowshade’s face twist into a grimace. She so badly wanted to express her disgust at the idea of eating worms but she also did not want to risk angering the clan that was sheltering her and her clanmates at the moment so she bite her tongue and said nothing. Mudvine deflated as she didn’t hear even a peep from the other nicheling. Was she really that unbearable to deal with that Crowshade wouldn’t even give her a small conversation? A tiny twinge of guilt twisted in Crowshade as she watched Mudvine’s posture droop before standing up and walking off. But she didn’t move from her spot as she continued to watch Mudvine until the other nicheling vanished from her sight before going back to idly staring at nothing. “I want to go home” Blossompaw’s ear flicked as she spoke those words and neither of the other WildClan nichelings could disagree with the statement. “I know but we’re not exactly ready to launch ourselves into another fight” TwigStar replied as he idly glanced around, most of the WhisperClan nichelings were out hunting or patrolling so he had gathered his clanmates to a secluded corner of the medicine den to talk. “And we’re stuck here” Crowshade grumbled as her paws dug into the ground below her to channel her frustration into something else. “Yeah, and the only idea I have is one I really don’t like” TwigStar sighed but Blossompaw perked up. “Well an idea is better than sitting around and doing nothing forever” She said as she looked over at TwigStar while Crowshade looked at him expectantly. “The only idea I currently have is asking GoldenStar if she and her clan would be willing to help us fight the bearyena” TwigStar admitted and he could see the moment that both of the two realized why he didn’t want to say anything about his idea. “Then we’d be in their debt” Crowshade said as she realized that they would have to pay them back somehow. “How? We don’t exactly have much to offer” Blossompaw piped up as she tried to figure out what they could even give in return. “That’s kind of the issue, even if I did ask we’d be in their debt until we found something to give up the only thing we have is…” TwigStar’s face soured as he had an idea. “Is?” Blossompaw prompted with a questioning stare. “Territory” TwigStar’s words caused Crowshade to bristle. “No” She hissed. “We might need it” She continued with a low rumble of irritation at the thought. “And there’s a bunch of stuff to explore, I doubt we’ve taken over the whole island” Blossompaw huffed completely agreeing with Crowshade especially on this matter. “But if we asked we’d need to pay them back with something, waiting would be worse because they could hold it over us” TwigStar said with mild annoyance, he didn’t like it but he didn’t want to be stuck in WhisperClan’s camp forever. “Once we’re healed we could fight them off ourselves!” Blossompaw declared but TwigStar just shook his head. “There’s more than two, I could smell them when I was leading that one away, there’s three at least” TwigStar said making the two look at him and he realized he forgot to mention that. “So we’d need more nichelings to help, believe me if I had a choice I wouldn’t even suggest it” He continued making Crowshade grimace while Blossompaw’s snout scrunched in irritation but neither of them protested. “Maybe we could just…I don’t know, hunt food for them and bring it to them as payment instead? Then we wouldn’t have to give up our territory and help them in return” Blossompaw said. “I mean you’re an amazing hunter TwigStar and if we all work together surely it’ll be enough for them” She rambled a bit out of nerves as she noticed both nichelings were silent. “That’s perfect!” TwigStar’s sudden exclamation startled Blossompaw into flinching making TwigStar wince before continuing. “Then we could repay our debt without having to worry about it being held over us” He said as he nodded to himself at the idea. “I’ll bring up the idea to GoldenStar later” TwigStar announced as he realized he may have a solution to their problem. “The sooner we get home the better” Crowshade said with relief. “I can’t wait to sleep in my own nest again” Blossompaw said with a happy sigh at the thought. Blossompaw couldn’t get a wink of sleep so she rose from her nest and carefully stepped outside the medicine den while ignoring the twinge of pain from her side, though thankfully it wasn’t as bad as when she and her clanmates first arrived. Her head turned this way and that before slowly making her way to the edge of the clearing. “Where are you going?” The sudden voice made Blossompaw’s ears flatten against her head as her gaze landed on a sandy-furred nicheling with thin white stripes running along her pelt sitting next to the camp entrance. “I just wanted to look at the stars” Blossompaw answered as she groomed the fur on her shoulder for a bit. “And why would you need to leave camp for that?” The nicheling asked questioning glance. “So I don’t wake anyone up” Blossompaw said with some confusion, wasn’t that obvious? “I’ll come with you than” The other nicheling said as the confused tone led her to believe that Blossompaw’s answer could be an excuse. “Okay?” Blossompaw wasn’t thrilled at the idea considering this was an attempt to relax that was now being invaded by a nicheling she didn’t know. She considered just going back but her legs were restless and the thought of laying down made her internally cringe. = She found a small clearing away from camp that showcased the sky like a prized possession. She slowly walked forward as her gaze was captured by the glittering lights that swam through the inky skies. Relaxing wasn’t something she could completely do as she was reminded by the sound of pawsteps taking a step closer to her. “I’m sure you’ve heard my name so what’s yours?” Blossompaw asked as she turned her head towards the nicheling who flinched at the unexpected conversation before answering. “Sandstripe” The nicheling answered as she looked over to stare at Blossompaw with a curious gaze. “Sorry if this is rude but you look like a fully grown warrior so why do you still have the paw in your name?” Sandstripe asked completely catching Blossompaw off guard. “Oh! Uh that, it’s uh- my warrior ceremony was pushed back due to me not being exactly blessed with hunting skills” Blossompaw stumbled a bit before landing on an answer that wasn’t entirely a lie. “That’s unfortunate, I’m sure you’ll get it soon” Sandstripe replied as she noticed it seemed like a bit of a sore spot for the other nicheling. “Yeah…I sure hope so, I want to be a capable warrior” Blossompaw said with a sigh as she returned her eyes to the stars. “I get that” Sandstripe said in complete agreement. “You do?” Blossompaw’s gaze was stolen from the stars once more as she turned towards the other nicheling with open curiosity. “Yeah, I want to prove to my clan that I’m worthy of getting the spot of deputy in the future, maybe even leader” Sandstripe said before shaking her head. “The only thing holding me back is my fighting skills” She grumbled. “I mean they’re fine, decent, but I want them to be the best they can be to prove I’m worthy” Sandstripe said with a deep breath that she soon let out while Blossompaw’s eyes shined with an idea. “We could train!” The sudden volume caused Sandstripe’s fur to bristle. “Er sorry” Blossompaw apologized before quickly moving along. “You said you’re not the best at fighting and I’m not the best at hunting but I’d say my fighting skills are my best ones, so maybe I could teach you better fighting moves and you could teach me how to hunt better! Maybe I’d learn better from someone new” She rambled in her explanation so it took Sandstripe a bit to catch everything but once she did her face lit up. “And we could both boost our weakest skills and prove we’re the best we can be!” Sandstripe’s voice raised a smidgen as her excitement increased at the idea of becoming a perfect warrior. “But you’re injured and I’m sure you’ll return to your clan’s territory once you do” Sandstripe’s excitement dampened at the realization. “We could meet in secret to train” Blossompaw suggested with a casualness that Sandstripe’s mind froze at. “What if our clans view us as unloyal because we’re meeting with a nicheling of a different clan?” Sandstripe’s ears lowered and she broke eye contact as she spoke. “GoldenStar and Speckleheart don’t seem like judgemental nichelings to me, and TwigStar would understand if I explained it to him” Blossompaw couldn’t see an issue with it and it made Sandstripe consider the idea. “I…guess you’re right, it’s for the good of our clans” Sandstripe relented as she realized it couldn’t hurt. “Exactly!” Blossompaw said with a grin. The two sat in content silence for a while before Sandstripe noticed the sun was just beginning to rise. “My post! I was supposed to guard the entrance: Sandstripe said with alarm as she shot to her paws. ”Oh right my clanmates might be a bit worried if I’m not there“ Blossompaw got to her paws at her own realization. ”Guess we should get back“ She said causing the two to turn around and go where they needed to. Thankfully everyone was still sleeping so there was no uproar due to their absences.

  14. Hey! Feels weird making this my first post, but I used to be one of the super early beta testers from the facebook days. I've still been playing from time-to-time so here are some suggestions partially based on the older demos: The first version I played was before you guys introduced the island idea. It was one giant land mass with hot edges and a temperate center. It would be neat if the next game took a que from dwarf fortress or rimworld and let us choose a "site" on a much larger continent to live on, with the ability to adjust how big the gameplay area is. The main difference between this idea and the islands is that it allows more biome diversity, since there wouldn't always be an ocean on the edge of the map, and those biomes can be significantly larger so if a player decides to move their tribe across the continent it wouldn't always be a (relatively) quick hop to the other side of a harsh environment. Depending on what you guys plan to do, settings options to choose between being on a continent vs island might work. Alternatively, you could improve how dwarf fortress' "site" system works and allow players to move the playable area similarly to how the islands work now, by moving all of the ones your plan to take to the edges of their "territory" before the players push to move in that direction. The "site" would then move a square over on the world map, and allow larger tribes to stick together instead of picking a handful who can move on. I think this system would also allow weather and seasons to provide some impact to gameplay. In the original, it didn't make too much sense to add difficult weather outside of certain islands to help differentiate them. With a global map and "site" system, players might be in a single biome for a rather long time, so adapting your species to the weather in that area as well as the climate would add to the gameplay. Along with the weather acting as a signal that you should adapt your species before you keep going forward. For example, if your temperate-aligned animals are moving north, the rains get colder. The area would normally be warm but the cold rains signal that your species needs to adapt before they hit an icy region. Cold rains can also be a signal that winters here get much colder than your animals can handle, even if they can live in the area during summer, and it would be a good idea to move back down south before it gets too cold. Next idea comes from one of the facebook beta builds: Age-related traits. At the time you guys had the nichelings' fur get darker with age, it was removed in later builds. I think that should be brought back if you plan to expand the genetics system, it would be neat to have different genes affect aging. Different white or black fur patterns that show for age-related reasons, and animals losing strength and speed after reaching their elder years, would be neat to see. Now here are ideas I've had over the years from playing the finished product: Let adults pick up babies. The main reason I've personally never had an entirely sneak and speed-based species is that if I build a nest and a carnivorous animal shows up the next turn, I can not move the mom. The baby will be eaten. Admittedly, feeding your babies to carnivorous animals is a strategy some animals use, but most of the ones that have children who can't immediately walk will try to pick one up as they're running away. In-Depth family trees. I'm not sure how viable this is for you guys so it's not a huge deal, but there is a little open-source project called Clangen with a neat family tree system. The main reason it works, I think, is because of the afterlife menu that allows you to keep cats around or let them fade. Fading allows their details to be deleted by the game and leave little ghost image in their place that lets you know "someone existed there", and how long it takes for them to fade can be customized. You can't, for instance, click on the little ghost image to see if they had descendants, you can only mouse over and see their name. For Niche 2, I probably wouldn't call it an afterlife, but having a similarly styled menu off to the side as an "archive" or "graveyard" would allow people to scroll through their family tree, should the player choose to make sure that specific animal's details don't fade. Fading would also prevent the Crusader Kings 2 problem where the family tree will lag horrifically after enough generations pass. Clangen also allows renaming the not-faded dead and adding biographies, which is neat for players who like to tell stories that involve current generations changing details from the past or mythologizing their ancestors. That last part really isn't necessary for this kind of game but it's something to consider. Auto-resource gathering. Clicking on every individual animal to get food and straw is a bigger population cap than the resources themselves and part of why I never return to old saves anymore. I like playing with big tribes but I can't remember what all 50+ of them were supposed to be doing when I get back. On paper, it's not a big deal to roll with it, but it also slows things down so much that it turns into death by 1000 cuts. Sex-linked genes. I'm specifically referring to the mane. Sometimes I just want the mane to not be sex-linked. At the same time, sometimes I want other traits to be sex-linked. Genetically, I have no idea how traits develop sex linkage or how it's possible for them to stop being sex-linked, but since the original game does allow us to mutate gills and webbed feet onto a baby whose parents were both bear hybrids with no family history of either of those traits, I'm not sure how hung up on accuracy we need to be for making traits sex-linked or removing the sex-linkage from other traits. Give birth without a nest. It should be dangerous, harmful to the mother, and potentially result in a stillbirth; but I'd vastly prefer the risk of losing the baby to the eternal pregnancy thing we have in the original. Especially when part of the challenge was supposed to come from having rogues around trying to sneak-breed your females. Why would I ever have the ones I want to breed move around before they're pregnant by the creatures in my tribe? Why would I let a creature I never planned to breed take up the limited space and resources on a nest just to have a baby I'll likely throw into the ocean? Admittedly they only go into the ocean if they're eternally sick, but the point stands. It's honestly something I've always been annoyed about but tolerated because it was the first type of game going into this kind of depth. I really, really don't want to see eternal pregnancies in the second game. Others have already brought up splitting the tribe so they have their own resources and allowing creatures who aren't part of your tribe(s) to reproduce on their own, so I won't rehash that, I'm just putting this here to let it be known I've also had that idea for a while and would like to see them as well.
